Abstract: Introduction: On unfamiliar territory -- Crossing borders in Southern Africa -- Doing research in postcolonial times -- Theoretical framework: Revising concepts of migration studies -- Finding ways to and in Cape Town: Challenges and mitigating factors -- Collective self-description: Actual, vague, and absent figures of identification -- The others: Comparisons to (other) collectives -- “It’s not easy if you are Zimbabwean”: Being Zimbabwean in South Africa -- Examining insider-outsider dynamics -- Nationality, citizenship, and belonging -- Conclusion: Paradoxes of nationality in theory and practice.
Abstract: In recounting their migration journey, references to nationality pervade the narratives of Zimbabweans in South Africa. Given the challenges many migrants confront based on their nationality, this presents a seeming paradox. This qualitative interview study, conducted with Zimbabwean migrants in two areas of Cape Town—Observatory and Dunoon—aims to elucidate the nuances of national self-descriptions in a demanding environment. Identifying as Zimbabwean serves as a sanctuary and a retreat, where alternative identifications often prove transient; embracing Zimbabweanness fosters an affirmative and positive self-perception, surpassing the limitations of other collective self-descriptions. Rather than pre-emptively characterizing a nationalist demeanour, the articulation of national self-description emerges as a strategic tool to navigate experiences of hostility and discrimination, while also asserting legitimate claims to equal opportunities. In this way, nationality takes a trajectory that diverges from conventional notions of nationality (and the ones of the nation-state or citizenship) as per Northern theory, contributing to alternative conceptualizations within the framework of the Global South. About the author Johannes Kögel studied philosophy and sociology in Munich and Cape Town. He currently works as a research associate at the University of Munich (LMU München). He has conducted social research on diverse topics such as brain-computer interfaces, xenotransplantation, and migration in South Africa. .

Abstract: The book focuses on volatile processes at the South African-Zimbabwean border that arise from practices of migration and income generating activities. The processes are influenced by neoliberal developments and controversial discourses on migration, commercial sexual services, and human trafficking. In this unstable environment, different actors continuously negotiate, trying to achieve stable positions. By addressing issues related to migration and income generating activities, they maneuver between legal rules and their own moral values and interests. In their attempt to classify incidents in the border context that are unclear to them, actors’ explanations are partly based on the concept of transnational human trafficking. Thereby, they transfer the impenetrability discursively associated with this concept to what they see as obscure cross-border migration, disconcerting sexual services, and other alienating economic activities. Alternatively, actors understand undocumented cross-border migration, commercial sexual services, and other illegalised income-generating activities as common everyday practices at the border and also assume that human trafficking does not play an important role there. About the author Anna S. Hüncke is a research associate at the Research Institute for Sustainability at Helmholtz Centre Potsdam. There she deals with questions of socio-ecological transformation and public sector innovation.

Abstract: Introduction -- Our town: the sociology of policing communities -- Setting the stage: setting, method, and perspective -- Framing police encounters: the dramaturgy of authority -- Violence and the police -- Community tales: storytelling, experience, and local knowledge -- The police and community maintenance -- Postscript: retrospective auto-ethnography.
Abstract: This Open-Access-book questions the relationship between institutionalized images and understandings of policing – the monolithic ideas common to most, if not all, Western law enforcement agencies – and contextual, situative, and local interactions where the human representatives of policing – street-level officers – come into contact with residents. The political and theoretical association of specific forms of “Western” policing with democratic society can be illustrated in the case of German integration: narratives of reform and essentially forging new democratic police agencies in the “new German states” stand at odds with much of the experience and statements of officers who continued to serve following (Re)Unification. Officers who present their works primarily in terms of their local responsibilities, expectations and more specifically to their unique and individual relationship and connection to their communities downplay the relevance of high-level policing policy. Based on a two-year ethnographic study of policing in a rural county in the German state of Brandenburg, this book explores the local nature of policing both in terms of how police officers imagine their communities to be and with reference to broader societal expectations and assumptions of what police, essentially, are, can effectively do, and should effectively do. About the author Aaron Bielejewski is a research associate at the Centre for Criminological Research Saxony. He studies cultural and interactionist aspects of police work and prison.

Abstract: Anthropogenic Climate Change is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century and receives more and more international awareness. The central instruments to counter climate change are emissions trading schemes (ETS) to cover GHG emissions. To increase efficiency and to ensure global reduction of emissions damaging to the climate, an international emissions trading scheme would be a rational choice. To establish such a global scheme, political decision makers could follow a bottom-up-approach by linking already existing ETS with each other. The book investigates such linkings of emissions trading schemes, which provide many benefits for the linking partners. As experience shows, although the number of schemes increased in the last decade, only a few linkings were established. Thus, the book answers the question, if and which conditions for states exist to link their emissions trading schemes. About the author Matthias Machinek is a spokesman of one of the four German transmission system operators, which have a central role in the German Energy Transformation. Before that he worked as a political analyst in European and American carbon markets and as an office manager in the Parliament of Northrhine-Westphalia. He wrote his dissertation about the topic of linkings of emissions trading schemes at Prof. Dr. Thomas Jäger’s chair of International Relations and Foreign Policy at the University of Cologne.

Abstract: For over 20 years, school interventions involving former right-wing extremists have been popular in Germany. In practice, they are advertised and conducted as both civic education and extremism prevention. This book uses an evidence-based and interdisciplinary approach to examine the potentials and challenges of this format. It provides a thematic embedding of German application, a comprehensive review of attributed impact assumptions and the state of related research. Furthermore, this research offers highly valuable, unique and comprehensive insights based on empirical evidence. It thus contributes to a better understanding of the format and its complexity. Overall, the findings give no clear indication that the involvement of former right-wing extremists in schools initiate civic education processes or prevent political extremism. Rather, the investigation found fundamental needs for additional research, modification, and sensitization. In this vein, this book makes a pioneer contribution to quality assurance and evaluation research in civic education and extremism prevention. About the author Dr. Antje Gansewig worked in the fields of political extremism, crime prevention and civic education for several institutions over the last 15 years (e.g., National Center for Crime Prevention, Federal Agency for Civic Education). Currently, she is a researcher at the University of Oldenburg, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Civic Education.

Abstract: Introduction: becoming EU citizens – consequences for Bulgarian migrants in Germany -- Background: history of Bulgarian migration to Germany -- Methodology: a time-location sampling survey among Bulgarians in Hamburg -- Migration patterns: empirical evidence beyond official statistics -- Labour market integration: analysing the impact of restricted freedom of work -- Political integration: exploring the electoral participation of recent EU citizens -- Naturalisation: explaining the exceptional willingness of Bulgarians to naturalise -- Conclusion: the unnoticed effects of EU accession.
Abstract: This study provides empirical evidence on the considerable but often unnoticed impact of EU accession on the mobility and integration of migrants from Bulgaria in Germany. Original data from a time-location sampling survey in Hamburg reveal that free movement not only induced a high level of mobility among EU citizens from Bulgaria after 2007 but also enabled their more permanent settlement in Germany. The study also provides statistical evidence that EU citizenship contributed to better legal integration of Bulgarian migrants in Germany, but national policies shaped to a greater extent their integration in terms of participation in the core areas of life. Restrictive policies such as transitional periods in the freedom of work hampered labour market integration and created more disadvantaged positions for workers. Inclusive policies such as the dual citizenship policy facilitated the naturalisation of settled migrants and led to exceptionally high naturalisation rates for Bulgarians that point to their successful integration in society. However, integration successes remain almost unnoticed in public discourse, which is dominated by the image of Bulgarian migration as a challenge. About the author Vesela Kovacheva is a researcher at the Centre for Migration Research and Integration Practice at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW).

Abstract: Dejan Petkov explores the tramway renaissance in Western Europe from a socio-technical standpoint and focuses on the development in Germany, France, and England. A multiple case analysis reveals the drivers, impact forces, actors and interest constellations behind the tramway renaissance in these countries and demonstrates the large variations in local systems and their style. A key finding is that there can be quite different paths to the success of tramway systems, but this success usually comes at a cost and can have a comprehensive character only if the systems are considered an integral part of the overarching strategies and concepts for urban and regional development. Contents A socio-technical framing of the tramway renaissance Characteristics of the international tramway renaissance The gradual and multifaceted development of tramway systems in Germany The emergence of the modern French tramway as a socio-technical novelty The uneven path of tramway development in England Appropriation of tramway and light rail technology Target Groups Researchers and students of transport studies, spatial planning, and geography Experts of local transport planning authorities, public transport companies The Author Dejan Petkov is a transport planning officer in Darmstadt and focuses on public transport planning and policy issues. Abstract: Nadja Bieletzki explores how university presidents lead universities. She provides insights into the upper echelons of higher education management and focuses especially on university presidents in Germany. Special attention is given to the career background of university presidents and the way they conduct reform projects. Based on the results from semi-structured expert interviews and their qualitative analysis, the author shows that university presidents do not use all their formal power although their position has been strengthened by law. This can be explained by the collegial characteristics of universities, which drive and restrict presidential actions. Contents Analyzing Higher Education Management Career Paths of University Presidents Understanding Reforms in Universities with Micro/Organizational Politics Target Groups Researchers and students in the fields of sociology and political sciences with a focus on higher education research and science studies Science managers at higher education and research institutions as well as ministries with an interest in scientific results of higher education research The Author Dr. Nadja Bieletzki is coordinator of the Leibniz Center for Science and Society (LCSS) at the Leibniz University of Hannover.

Abstract: Lara Jüssen takes the case of Latin American household and construction workers in Madrid to show how ir/regular labour migrants make citizenship available for themselves through emplacements, embodiments and enactments of citizenship. After describing the sociopolitical context of crisis and resistance in Spain, citizenship is anthropologized in order to approach it through the workplace: the private household and the construction site. Based on empirical results from interviews, it is analyzed how citizenship is emplaced through ego-centered networks and assemblages that situate the migrants’ social belonging; how it is embodied through carving out of identities of the migrant workers, intersectionality of gender, ethnicity, and class, affects that imprint workers’ bodies, and experiences of violence at the workplace; then citizenships’ enactment is scrutinized through workers’ empowerment for rights, individually at the workplace and collectively through demonstrations and political theater performance in urban public space. Contents Latin American labour migration to Madrid Citizenship theory Actor-centered approach based on emplacement, embodiment, and enactment of citizenship Social relations at the workplace Target Groups  Scholars of migration sociology, anthropology, and social sciences Practicioners interested in political economy, gender, labour, and migration studies The Author Lara Jüssen is a cultural and social anthropologist with specialization in migration sociology

Abstract: Stefanie Walter examines the visibility of European Union citizens in the mass mediated European public sphere and argues that it can help facilitate an exchange between decision-makers and ordinary citizens. The results show that in comparison to other actor groups, such as political parties or civil society organisations, the visibility of European Union citizens is not marginal. Yet, the image of the European Union citizenry that becomes visible via the news media remains nationally entrenched and references to a truly European citizenry are rare. The study also uses multilevel regressions to explain the visibility of European Union citizens in the news coverage. The empirical analyses are based on a large-scale content analysis of TV news and newspaper articles of the 2009 European Parliament election. Abstract: This interdisciplinary endeavour portrays the central features of militant movements which hold totality as an important part of their doctrinal core. Revisiting the importance of modernity, utopianism, eschatology, charisma, psychology and the history of ideas, Mihai Murariu pursues a reconstruction of the historical requirements for the emergence of such movements. Making a central use of the concept of totalism, the work establishes a conceptual bridge from antiquity to the contemporary period, whilst also arguing for the suitability of the term in comparison to totalitarianism or political religion. The author also proposes a distinct taxonomy for structural elements, variants, and development phases which may be encountered in totalist movements. Contents • Totality and Totalism: Theory and Concepts • Evolving Perspectives: Eschatology and Utopia • The Totalist Types: Between Renovative and Utopian Strands • Totalism Transformed: Power, Purity, and Truth from Heterodoxy to Ideocracy • The Legion of the Archangel Michael and the “Hybrid” Totalist Type Target Groups • Lecturers and students of political science, security studies, history, sociology, philosophy • Academics, policymakers About the Author Mihai Murariu is an independent researcher, as well as a writer and essayist. His research interests focus on the roots of radicalism, modernity, terrorism, and the interplay between ideology, security and militant movements, and the challenges these bring about in contemporary pluralist societies

Abstract: Matthias Müller makes a case for the particular role of the demand side in research on innovation. Based on a complex agent-based simulation model, he analyzes the versatile mutual relationships between consumers and producers within the innovation process. Instead of oversimplifying the demand side, the book aims to apply important aspects which too often are only applied to the supply side, e.g., the heterogeneity and bounded rationality of economic actors embedded in networks. The results offer a new perspective on the innovation process, proving that the demand side and consumers are important drivers of innovation, which must be included in future research for a full picture. Abstract: Lisa Dühring reconstructs the relationship between public relations and marketing research on a metatheoretical level. She presents a concise systematization of the theoretical discourse in both disciplines since the beginning of the twentieth century by differentiating key phases of development and evaluating current research approaches. This study argues for a stronger connection of both disciplines and a better profiling within the mother disciplines of communication and business studies by fostering critical and interpretative approaches. This book is strongly recommended to everybody interested in the history and epistemology of marketing and public relations theory and the relationship between both fields. Abstract: From an ethnological standpoint, this study contends that the construction and implementation of a gender-based literacy program that empowers adult education learners in rural or semi-rural (hybrid) areas in Algeria must consider the context of the Arabic-Islamic tradition. In her research Anne Laaredj-Campbell examines the educational situation of women in the Haut Plateau by using methods derived from the field of ethnology. The author endeavors to take a look at the literacy practices and their theoretical implications for empowering women in Algeria. To date, there are no empirical studies on adult female literacy in Algeria that focus on the cultural construction of gender and empowerment. A gender approach to education is committed to establishing reasons for the deficiencies of literacy among women. Contents Theoretical and conceptual overview of literacy Women’s status in literacy and education Understanding the process of empowerment for rural women Empirical case studies of the Iqraa functional literacy program and Ibn Khaldun University survey in Tiaret, Algeria Target Groups Lecturers and students of philosophy and cultural anthropology specializing in gender and women’s studies Readers who are interested in literacy and empowerment, gender and women studies, cultural anthropology The Author Anne Laaredj-Campbell received her doctorate degree in cultural anthropology from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Freiburg i. Abstract: Annette Ranko analyses the Muslim Brotherhood’s challenging of the Mubarak regime and the ensuing struggle between the two from 1981 to 2011. She furthermore traces how the group evolved throughout the process of that struggle. She studies how the Brotherhood’s portrayal of itself as an attractive alternative to the regime provoked the Mubarak regime to level anti-Brotherhood propaganda in the state-run media in order to contain the group’s appeal amongst the public. The author shows how the regime’s portrayal of the Brotherhood and the Brotherhood’s engagement with it have evolved over time, and how this ideational interplay has combined with structural institutional aspects in shaping the group’s behaviour and ideology. Abstract: Anitta M. Hipper examines to what extent and under what conditions the EU's transformative power met with resistance in Romania. The book touches upon a raw nerve for most post-communist societies: justice and anti-corruption reform. Through the use of a context-sensitive approach, it assesses how domestic factors influenced the implementation of EU conditionality towards Romania from 1990 to 2012. Empirical investigations reveal a struggle between various interested parties in complying with EU conditionality. As a result, a complex layer of (non-) compliance emerged and it became a Herculean task to ensure the sustainability of reform by reformist forces within Romania and the EU. Abstract: Astrid Bothmann examines historical, political and socioeconomic factors that explain the absence of transitional justice in Nicaragua from 1990 to 2012. The author provides the first systematic analysis of the reasons for the lack of transitional justice in Nicaragua after the end of the Sandinista regime and the civil war (1990). Contrary to other Latin American states of the third wave of democratization, which put the perpetrators of past crimes on trial, established truth commissions, purged political and military officials, and made reparations to the victims, Nicaragua’s first post-war government opted for a policy of national reconciliation that was based on amnesty and oblivion. Subsequent governments followed this course so that the past has not been dealt with until today. Abstract: Philipp M. Lersch shows that residential relocations may change individuals' lives for the better but also for the worse depending on their resources, restrictions and contextual conditions. A comparative analysis of English and German panel data reveals that relocations improve the quality of dwellings on average in both countries but improvements strongly depend on life course stages and economic resources of individuals. Only few individuals improve their neighbourhoods when relocating. Conditions in the housing market are important determinants of these changes. Gender inequality persists

Abstract: How can the salience of ethnicity in Rwandan and Burundian politics be overcome? How can this salience be approached analytically? And why, exactly, is it that it is potentially conflict-prone? This book gives answers to these questions on the basis of what Rwandan and Burundian interviewees expressed as taken for granted and real. In particular, it focuses on different political institutional models, and how they help to overcome an ethnic interpretation of political and social exclusion. Despite the diverging institutional approaches to dealing with ethnic cleavages, the qualitative analysis shows that political and social exclusion, in particular the distribution of power, are interpreted in ethnic terms in both countries. Focusing on notions taken for granted by Rwandan and Burundian interviewees, the book demonstrates, how deeply intertwined ethnicity and politics are in Rwanda and Burundi today.
