Abstract: This exhibition and catalog includes works by First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and Native American photographers accompanied by research that analyzes their methodologies, principles, and impact upon the medium. With incisive contributions by individual curatorial council members, this volume presents Native photography in three thematic sections that underscore the following: Native people are present in all facets of American life; their role is transformative in the larger society; and their view of, and connections to, the land and all living things is holistic and fundamental. The publication features 130 photographic works by Native photographers from the late nineteenth century to the present, ranging from documentary photographs to family snapshots to conceptual works. Illustrated in full color, the photographs in this book offer diverse perspectives spanning geographic, chronological, and artistic experience, and shed new light on the extraordinary contributions of Native, First Nations, Metis, and Inuit artists to the art of the Americas. --Adapted from publisher's description

Abstract: Learning To Speak Bear is a book of photographs exploring the visual cues and relentless interruptions of motherhood while showing the grit that happens in caring for young children. It seeks to take the viewer through the reality that is everyday life and shed light on the challenges primary caregivers face. Having children is a biological process, becoming a mother is not. Becoming a mother means confronting buried trauma while straddling the first, second and third shifts, juggling physical and emotional needs with financial obligations and often lamenting careers due to high childcare costs and poor support. These photographs are an invitation to explore the physical work of the second shift so you can understand the mental load of the third shift. This is motherhood

Abstract: "Until recently, the Middle Helladic period was described as homogeneous and static. However, recent research has shown regional variability, early changes and more complexity. In Mortuary differentiation and social structure in the Middle Helladic Argolid, 2000-1500 B.C. the archaeological, anthropological and radiocarbon data from selected sites are integrated to determine if there was variation between individual burials, groupings and cemeteries and to reconstruct change through time. This work was done for selective Argive sites, namely Lerna, Asine and Aspis. The analysis has shown that in all cemeteries and through time kinship was the most important structuring principle, and age position in the kin network the most important component. Differentiation was not only observed within each burial place, but also between sites during the same period. Generally, a steady 'scaling up' can be observed, but it did not affect all sites in the same way. Changes were already underway at the beginning of the period but became intensified towards its end"--

Abstract: This stunning exhibition catalog visualizes what freedom looks like for Black Americans today and the legacy of the Civil War in 2023 and beyond. Emancipation: The Unfinished Project of Liberation sits at the intersection of history and contemporary life. Building upon in-depth conversations about representations of enslavement and emancipation at the close of the Civil War, this project originates from an analysis of sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward's The Freedman (1863), one of the first bronze representations of a Black person in the United States, and expands into an investigation of how living artists envision emancipation, freedom, and liberation today. Featuring interviews with artists Sadie Barnette, Alfred Conteh, Maya Freelon, Hugh Hayden, Letitia Huckaby, Jeffrey Meris, and Sable Elyse Smith, the exhibition catalog explores their practices along with cutting-edge scholarship by Kirsten Pai Buick and Kelvin Parnell, among others, as well as a haunting story of embodiment and exploitation by celebrated science-fiction author N. K. Jemisin. Burdened by failed promises but buoyed by hope, this project is mournful and melancholy yet also reflective and celebratory in its aspirations for a brighter future. Abstract: "After World War II a mood of despair and impotence pervaded the arts in West Germany. The culture and institutions of the Third Reich were abruptly dismissed, yet there was no immediate return to the Weimar period's progressive ideals. In this moment of cultural stasis, how could West Germany's artists free themselves from their experiences of Nazism? Moving from 1945 to reunification, Michael H. Kater explores West German culture as it emerged from the darkness of the Third Reich. Examining periods of denial and complacency as well as attempts to reckon with the past, he shows how all postwar culture was touched by the vestiges of National Socialism. From the literature of Günter Grass to the happenings of Joseph Beuys and Karlheinz Stockhausen's innovations in electronic music, Kater shows how it was only through the reinvigoration of the cultural scene that West Germany could contend with its past - and eventually allow democracy to reemerge"--

Abstract: "TautukKonik / Looking Back is a project to collaboratively create a portrait using repatriated photographs and Inuit narratives in Inuktitut and English interpreting life during a transitional time in northern Labrador. The Nunatsiavut Creative Group was formed in 2017 to weave together Inuit stories and recollections with photographs taken by Candace Cochrane of Inuit life on the north coast of Labrador between 1969 and 1986. Community researcher Andrea Procter connected Cochrane with the group of Inuit leaders and storytellers, all of whom are passionate about sharing and teaching Inuit history and culture to their children and grandchildren. Over the next five years, Candace Cochrane, Andrea Procter, and the Creative Group reclaimed and resituated the photographs with Inuit stories in a truly collaborative way. Together, they have created an inspired portrait of time and place in northern Labrador."--

Abstract: Propaganda is thousands of years old. But it came of age in the 20th century, when the development of mass media (and later multimedia communications) offered a fertile ground for its dissemination, and the century's global conflicts provided the impetus needed for its growth. Put simply, propaganda is the dissemination of ideas intended to convince people to think and act in a particular way and for a particular persuasive purpose. But it takes many forms, is fluid and indeed is constantly developing, most fervently in our own digital era. Terms such as 'fake news', 'post-truth', 'gate-keepers' and 'asymmetrical warfare' were unknown a decade ago yet today are now commonplace, and often cynically derided, in daily media communications. In this timely and fully international book, David Welch has selected fifty images to highlight the continuities and dis-continuities of mass-communication throughout history, be they via images, events, films or by 'propaganda by deed'. Such an approach demonstrates how changing technological innovations (such as television and the internet) have continued to shape the propaganda narrative but also demonstrate how tried and trusted forms of propaganda - such as the humble leaflet - can still prove highly effective. The fifty images included are not all necessarily the most striking - rather they have been chosen because they illustrate recurring themes and devices (such as humour) and different mediums employed by propagandists - from early Egyptian coins eulogizing Alexander the Great to the psychological warfare used in the war against terrorism following the destruction of the Twin Towers in New York, and the use of social media employed so widely in the current Covid pandemic

Abstract: This book is a comprehensive introduction to the relationship between communism (understood as an ideological, political, and social project) and culture, broadly defined as the field of aesthetic production. Communism was a global phenomenon, and the global civil war of the 20th century was, in more than one respect, a cultural war, which involved some of the most influential figures of the last century. The book highlights and explains the impact of political mythologies in the effiorts to transcend the “bourgeois” legacies and engage in a social, cultural, and anthropological revolution. The authors examine the interplay between utopian goals and cultural practices in fields such as literature, visual arts, film, and humanities in general.

Abstract: 'Victorian fashions for women' explores the British styles and clothing throughout the long reign of Queen Victoria, from the late 1830s to the first years of the 20th century. Within are a superb overview of the dresses, hats, hair styles, corsetry, undergarments shoes and boots that combined to present the prevailing styles for each decade. From those who had enough money to have day and evening wear and clothes for sports and outdoor activities, to those with limited income and wardrobes or labouring folk with little more than the clothes they stood up in. All decades are illustrated with original photographs, adverts and contemporary magazine features from the authors' own remarkable collections, accompanied by a knowledgeable and informative text that describes the fashions, their social history context and influences reflected in the clothes of the time. Laid out in a clear and easy-to-follow chronological order, the key features of styles, decoration and accoutrements will help family historians to date family photographs and will provide a useful resource for students and costume historians or for anyone with a love of fashion and style to enjoy

Abstract: McKinley draws on her extensive collection of historical and contemporary photos to present a visual history of African women across centuries. These images tell how deeply cosmopolitan and modern they are in their style; how they were able to reclaim the tools of the colonial oppression that threatened their selfhood and livelihoods. She shows that, while African studios captured the dignity, austerity, and grandeur of African women, photos by Europeans are mostly nudes, revealing the relationships of white men and Black females: at best, a grave power imbalance. -- adapted from jacket

Abstract: "Occupied is a collection of urinals used and photographed by artist Brian Fouhy. Often unnoticed, Fouhy hopes to draw attention to the beautiful, odd, and sometimes humorous forms urinals can take. By including information surrounding the use of each urinal, such as the meal eaten in a restaurant, the weather conditions at the time, or the distance from relevant points of interest; Fouhy adds another layer to the experience beyond just a standard visit to the loo. With a nod to Duchamp and the ready-made movement, and full of frivolous whimsy, this book takes a look behind the closed doors of bathrooms and showcases these unusual objects that perform a very necessary task. The second book from Fouhy, this collection of photography maintains his distinct observational style" -- publisher's website

Abstract: Djalkiri are footprints, ancestral imprints on the landscape that provide the Yolnu people of eastern Arnhem Land with their spiritual foundations. This book explores Yolnu art and material culture through the voices of those who have been involved with Yolnu collections over time. With contributions from Yolnu elders and artists, art historian and museum curators, it describes how communities and museums have worked together in the past, how the relationship has changed, and how Yolnu philosophies can guide how we engage with Yolnu art. Some of the collections featured here were created almost 100 years ago and have rarely been on public display. In Djalkiri, members of the Milingimbi/Yurrwi Island, Ramingining and Yirrkala communities offer insight into their historical, contemporary, and deeper time meanings

Abstract: "This catalog accompanies the 2021 exhibition at the Alaska State Museum in Juneau and traces the history of the sacred textiles known today as raven's tail and Chilkat robes. Masterfully woven by Native women from the plush white fur of mountain goats, this art was born long before the arrival of Euro-American visitors to the shores of the northern Gulf of Alaska and carries forward to the present. Robes are used in sacred ceremonies, where leaders and dancers wear them to display their clan crests, and where the spirits of the ancestors gather." --

Abstract: "Theatrum Mundi ("the theatre of the world”) describes the diversity of masks and performances that originated from the violent struggles between European, Arabic and “New World” civilizations. This authoritative study celebrates over 500 years of Mexican and South American Indigenous dance dramas and explains how mask makers, religious practitioners, masqueraders and entrepreneurs have helped to continuously reinvent, revitalize and express the changing world around them. The culmination of four decades of research by Dr. Anthony Shelton, professor of art history and director of the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) at the University of British Columbia, the text is illustrated by field photographs and images from MOA and other notable mask collections."--

Abstract: "The Dene have lived in the vast Mackenzie River Valley since time immemorial, by their account. To the Dene, the land owns them, not the other way around, and it is central to their livelihood and very way of being. But the subarctic Canadian Northwest Territories are home to valuable resources, including oil, gas, and diamonds. With mining came jobs and investment, but also road-building, pipelines, and toxic waste, which scarred the landscape, and alcohol, drugs, and debt, which deformed a way of life. In Paying the Land, Joe Sacco travels the frozen North to reveal a people in conflict over the costs and benefits of development. The mining boom is only the latest assault on indigenous culture: Sacco recounts the shattering impact of a residential school system that aimed to "remove the Indian from the child"; the destructive process that drove the Dene from the bush into settlements and turned them into wage laborers; the government land claims stacked against the Dene Nation; and their uphill efforts to revive a wounded culture. Against a vast and gorgeous landscape that dwarfs all human scale, Paying the Land lends an ear to trappers and chiefs, activists and priests, to tell a sweeping story about money, dependency, loss, and culture-recounted in stunning visual detail by one of the greatest cartoonists alive"--

Abstract: This groundbreaking volume examines the extraordinary artistic and cultural traditions of the African region known as the Sahel ("shore" in Arabic), a vast area on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert that includes present-day Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad. This is the first book to present a comprehensive overview of the diverse cultural achievements and traditions of the region, spanning more than 1,300 years from the pre-Islamic period through the 19th century. It features some of the earliest extant art from Africa as well as such iconic works as sculptures by the Dogon and Bamana peoples of Mali. Essays by leading international scholars discuss the art, architecture, archaeology, literature, philosophy, religion, and history of the Sahel, exploring the unique cultural landscape in which these ancient communities flourished. Richly illustrated and brilliantly argued, Sahel brings to life the enduring creativity of the different peoples who lived, traded, and traveled through this crossroads of the world.

Abstract: "A call to action--inspiring citizens to stand up and fight for social justice in our nation. In the last few years we have seen a wave of activism wash across our nation and inspire unprecedented protest and civic engagement. People came together in record-breaking numbers, outspoken and persistent. With the winds of resistance at their backs, people linked arms and set out to defend our freedoms and each other. Photojournalist Tish Lampert captures the spirit of the heroes and ordinary citizens on their activist journey to defend their American values during the most conflicted era in our recent history. The book charts the chronology of social-change movements that have dominated the headlines over the past several years: the fight for women's rights and gender equality, immigration rights, civil liberties, gun violence, and the environment. Lampert takes us to the front lines of activism, where she has documented each protest and their respective leaders, as well as the legions of ordinary Americans standing together to protect the values of our great nation."--provided by publisher

Abstract: The brightly colored, playful prints of Lilly Pulitzer's clothing were a staple of American fashion in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s--worn by members of society from Palm Beach to Nantucket, actresses, models, and stylish housewives. One could always spot a Lilly with its undeniable characteristics: clean, comfortable lines; bright and vivid colors; and the fantastical design of its fabrics. Whether at the beach or a cocktail party, these simple shifts for women and girls and jackets and trousers for the gents were a preppy rite of passage. The majority of Pulitzer's fabric designs from 1962 through 1985 were based on artwork by Key West-based artist Suzie Zuzek. These designs--monkeys sipping martinis, dancing flowers, colorful seashells, op-art geometrics--were all the rage and attracted the eye of such ladies as Jackie Kennedy, Happy Rockefeller, and Dina Merrill. This book--which is a treasure trove of the iconic prints and contextualizes the purely American label--is a must-have for the libraries of those who love fashion and social history. Abstract: In the region that was to become Moldavia and Wallachia, there are almost no traces of the use of writing for the millennium after the Roman Empire withdrew from Dacia. Written culture surfaces only by the second half of the fourteenth century, after the foundation of state institutions. This book surveys the earliest extant documents, their issuers, and the motives that triggered the development of documentary culture in Moldavia and Wallachia. By the fifteenth century, Moldavians were already accustomed to the use of charters. In Wallachia, noblemen also appealed to written records, but at that stage mainly in extraordinary circumstances. Women could not inherit land, and noblemen requested princely charters confirming a legal fiction that turned their daughters into sons. After the mid-sixteenth century, Wallachia experiences a steep growth in the number of charters issued. In this period of economic and social upheaval, charters proved an extraordinary means for the protection of landed property. Yet neither principality held secular archives - the storage of documents for later use in private hands suggests an early stage in the development of documentary culture. By covering the ?birth? and spread of pragmatic literacy in medieval Moldavia and Wallachia, this book thus fills an important lacuna in what is known about the development of literacy in the later Middle Ages.

Abstract: The Apsáalooke people, often referred to as the Crow, are known for their bravery and artistry, and their rich culture has developed over centuries in the Northern Plains. The Apsáalooke Women and Warriors project is a multi-format undertaking that presents a rich narrative of the Apsáalooke cultural past, figures the present-day Apsáalooke identity, and presents a vision for the future. Through writing, images, and sound, contemporary Apsáalooke artists and intellectuals convey the worldview of the Apsáalooke people, with each contributor offering a unique perspective. This book accompanies a multi-site exhibition at the Field Museum and the Neubauer Collegium. It combines images of contemporary and historic Apsáalooke cultural items and includes essays by Apsáalooke writers. While it works in concert with the exhibition, it also stands alone as a significant exploration of the iconography, lifeways, and cosmologies of the Apsáalooke people. All proceeds from this book will benefit Little Big Horn College in Crow Agency, Montana

Abstract: From couture fashion to opulent perfumes and decadent food, the luxury goods and services industry has grown at an unprecedented rate even in the context of a global recession. But in contemporary digital culture does luxury still reside in material things, or rather the look of things? In this first study of luxury through the lens of visual culture, Armitage argues that luxury is undergoing a shift from material culture to the immaterial culture of the visual, offering new forms of luxury engagement and unparalleled levels of pleasure never before offered to the senses. Calling for a new understanding of luxury in the changing visual landscape of contemporary society, Luxury and Visual Culture embraces an extraordinary range of cultural forms, including fashion, photography, social media, television, and art. From the masterpieces of Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons, to Richard Avedon's photography and Louis Vuitton's Flagship stores, the book explores key issues of globalization, digitization, consumer identity, "mass" luxury, and the role of art. This text is ideal for all students of contemporary luxury studies, as well as scholars and researchers in the field of visual culture

Abstract: In 1932, the budding twenty-three-year-old photographer Nachum Gidalewitsch (who would later become the celebrated Israeli photographer Tim Gidal) set out from his hometown of Munich, Germany, to visit relatives and photograph what were to him the exotic locals in Jewish Poland. The extraordinary photographic record of that visit is here presented for the first time in book form, in a poignant testimony and remembrance of a community that had no way to know it was in its last years. Gidal, who emigrated to British Mandate Palestine in 1936, was one of a select group of photographers who took advantage of new technology pecifically the lightweight and portable nature of the Leica camera to found the pioneering field of photojournalism. He would go on to document World War II as a photo reporter and later to become a noted objective photographer. In these photographs taken early in his remarkable career, Gidal captures the poignant ordinariness of a thriving community just before its annihilation. These straightforward, honest, and intimate portraits embody the mission the photographer himself once described as capturing variations on the everlasting tragicomedy of human life.

Abstract: "Explore the changing world of late nineteenth-century Iran through the gaze of one of its most renowned photographers, Antoin Sevruguin. This volume, which will be accompanied by a forthcoming exhibition, publishes for the first time the Oriental Institute Museum's complete collection of nineteenth-century Iranian photographs, most of which were created by Sevruguin. Sevruguin's artfully staged photographs still resonate with us today. Accompanying the print catalog is a series of essays that investigate Sevruguin's life and photographic career, including the lasting impact of his unique vision, as demonstrated by the work of contemporary artist Yassaman Ameri" -- Publisher's description
Note: Literaturverzeichnis Seite 347-367 , "A hitherto little-known treasure of the Oriental Institute Museum is its collection of 152 Qajar-era photographs, which date to the nineteenth century and were captured primarily by the acclaimed Iranian-Armenian photographer Antoin Sevruguin. Recently revealed by a growing body of scholarship to be a major figure in early photography, Sevruguin documented changing life in Iran through a wide range of subjects as the country stood on the cusp of modernity at the turn of the twentieth century. As emphasized by special exhibit curator Tasha Vorderstrasse, Sevruguin stood in contrast to his Western contemporaries who, immersed in the Orientalist tradition, focused specifically on the antiquity of the country, romanticizing the ruins of a glorious past. Rather, Sevruguin's photography promotes the newly arrived conveniences of the modern age while simultaneously capturing traditional ways of Iranian life - often drawing a stark contrast between the two in their juxtaposition. Understanding the new technology to be more than a mere medium of documentation for posterity, Sevruguin was an early proponent of photography as art, frequently backstamping his work with the label "photographie artistique". Sevruguin's distinctive approach to composition, choice of subject matter, and use of light and shadows are hallmarks of his photographic vision. Expertly curated by Vorderstrasse - and timely for the recent scholarly and artistic appreciation of Sevruguin's work - Antoin Sevruguin : Past and Present exhibits for the first time the Oriental Institute's unstudied and largely forgotten collection of Qajar-era photographs that were acquired at the beginning of the twentieth century. As one might expect of an OI exhibition, Antoin Sevruguin : Past and Present and its accompanying catalog rigorously explore Sevruguin's work in the fullest of its historical, cultural, and ethnographic contexts."--taken from Foreword, page vii

The book presents a succession of brilliant and provocative pieces--from both emerging and renowned creators of all kinds--that generates an entrancing rhythm: Readers will go from conversations with hackers and street artists to memes and Instagram posts, from powerful prose to dazzling paintings and insightful infographics. A generational document that captures this fast-moving generation in its own dynamic and exspansive language. While shaped in the tradition of other generational statements, from The New Negro to Black Fire to Toni Morrison's landmark The Black Book, Black Futures does not have a retrospective air. It showcases the present, but points to the future. We live at a time when black culture--whether it's created by Ava DuVernay or Donald Glover, Kendrick Lamar or Cardi B, meme-makers or YouTubers--is opening our imaginations and offering new paths forward, a multi-voiced, utopian alternative to a world of walls and white nationalism. Black Futures captures this expansive vision and energy and makes it available to any reader, of any color, who wants to explore this exciting cultural moment and see the next one coming"--

Abstract: "INFORMATION ACTIVISM surveys the media produced by lesbian feminist archivists, librarians, historians, and hotline workers over the past 50 years, showing how volunteer-driven activist information projects formed the basis for queer digital media practices today. Recognizing a gap in the resources available to queer women and in how institutional libraries and archives represented lesbian history, these women decided to generate and index the information themselves. Cait McKinney considers how these information activists prioritized feminist theory and politics in their work, seeking to create media that were accessible, collaborative, and grassroots.
Abstract: McKinney also looks at the evolution of lesbian feminist information projects from the 1970s to the present, charting media formats and distribution methods as they moved from paper-based methods to computerized and other new digital technologies, while the language used to categorize and tag information also changed to become more trans-inclusive. The book first looks at lesbian newsletters and periodicals that proliferated from the early 1970s to the mid-1990s to produce networks of lesbian feminist information infrastructure. These newsletters-such as Matrices, Network News, Grapevine, and Telewoman-included grassroots materials like hotline numbers, calendars of events, overviews of new primary source materials for researchers, book announcements and reviews, as well as fundraising appeals.
Abstract: Next, McKinney considers the call logs and archived records of New York's Lesbian Switchboard and Toronto's Lesbian Phone Line, which attest to the intense emotional tone and economies of care involved in the hotlines. The third chapter turns to paper card indexes created in the 1980s, including "The Lesbian Periodicals Index" and "Black Lesbians: An Annotated Bibliography," as a form of media that allowed lesbian feminists to deliberately construct and narrate lesbian history in their own language, while making lesbian information coherent and intelligible for both insiders and outsiders. Finally, McKinney examines how the often-improvised digitization practices employed at the Lesbian Herstory Archives challenge and enrich understandings of technological values like access, usability, engagement, and preservation.

Abstract: This book explores the ways in which religion is observed, performed, and organised in skateboard culture. Drawing on scholarship from the sociology of religion and the cultural politics of lifestyle sports, this work combines ethnographic research with media analysis to argue that the rituals of skateboarding provide participants with a rich cultural canvas for emotional and spiritual engagement. Paul O'Connor contends that religious identification in skateboarding is set to increase as participants pursue ways to both control and engage meaningfully with an activity that has become an increasingly mainstream and institutionalized sport. Religion is explored through the themes of myth, celebrity, iconography, pilgrimage, evangelism, cults, and self-help--back cover
