Abstract: Master BDD to deliver higher-value software more quickly To develop high-value products quickly, software development teams need better ways to collaborate. Agile methods like Scrum and Kanban are helpful, but they're not enough. Teams need better ways to work inside each sprint or work item. Behavior-driven development (BDD) adds just enough structure for product experts, testers, and developers to collaborate more effectively. Drawing on extensive experience helping teams adopt BDD, Richard Lawrence and Paul Rayner show how to explore changes in system behavior with examples through conversations, how to capture your examples in expressive language, and how to flow the results into effective automated testing with Cucumber. Where most BDD resources focus on test automation, this guide goes deep into how BDD changes team collaboration and what that collaboration looks like day to day. Concrete examples and practical advice will prepare you to succeed with BDD, whatever your context or role. · Learn how to collaborate better by using concrete examples of system behavior · Identify your project's meaningful increment of value so you're always working on something important · Begin experimenting with BDD slowly and at low risk · Move smoothly from informal examples to automated tests in Cucumber · Use BDD to deliver more frequently with greater visibility · Make Cucumber scenarios more expressive to ensure you're building the right thing · Grow a Cucumber suite that acts as high-value living documentation · Sustainably work with complex scenario data · Get beyond the "mini-waterfalls" that often arise on Scrum teams

Abstract: Learn the basics of reactive programming and how it makes apps more responsive. This book shows you how to incorporate reactive programming into existing development products and cycles using RXSwift and RXCocoa on iOS and Mac. As we move away from the traditional paradigm of typing or touching one step at a time to interact with programs, users expect apps to adapt and not need constant hand-holding. People today expect their devices to do much more than just follow commands. They expect devices to react and adapt. Reactive programming, a new term for asynchronous processing, requires new app architectures, and you'll learn how these are already built into iOS and macOS in many places. Abstract: Provide evidence-based answers that can be measured and relied upon by your business. Database administrators will be able to make sound architectural decisions in a fast-changing landscape of virtualized servers and container-based solutions based on the empirical method presented in this book for answering "what if" questions about database performance. Today's database administrators face numerous questions such as: What if we consolidate databases using multitenant features? What if we virtualize database servers as Docker containers? What if we deploy the latest in NVMe flash disks to speed up IO access? Do features such as compression, partitioning, and in-memory OLTP earn back their price? What if we move our databases to the cloud? As an administrator, do you know the answers or even how to test the assumptions? Database Benchmarking and Stress Testing introduces you to database benchmarking using industry-standard test suites such as the TCP series of benchmarks, which are the same benchmarks that vendors rely upon. You'll learn to run these industry-standard benchmarks and collect results to use in answering questions about the performance impact of architectural changes, technology changes, and even down to the brand of database software. You'll learn to measure performance and predict the specific impact of changes to your environment. You'll know the limitations of the benchmarks and the crucial difference between benchmarking and workload capture/reply. This book teaches you how to create empirical evidence in support of business and technology decisions. It's about not guessing when you should be measuring. Empirical testing is scientific testing that delivers measurable results. Begin with a hypothesis about the impact of a possible architecture or technology change. Then run the appropriate benchmarks to gather data and predict whether the change you're exploring will be beneficial, and by what order of magnitude. Stop guessing. Start measuring. Let Database Benchmarking and Stress Testing show the way. What You'll Learn Understand the industry-standard database benchmarks, and when each is best used Prepare for a database benchmarking effort so reliable results can be achieved Perform database benchmarking for consolidation, virtualization, and cloud projects Recognize and avoid common mistakes in benchmarking database performance Measure and interpret results in a rational, concise manner for reliable comparisons Choose and ...

Abstract: Troubleshoot the most widespread and pernicious Java performance problems using a set of open-source and freely-available tools that will make you dramatically more productive in finding the root causes of slow performance. This is a brief book that focuses on a small number of performance anti-patterns, and you'll find that most problems you encounter fit into one of these anti-patterns. The book provides a specific method in a series of steps referred to as the "P.A.t.h. Checklist" that encompasses persistence, alien systems, threads, and heap management. These steps guide you through a troubleshooting process that is repeatable, that you can apply to any performance problem in a Java application. This technique is especially helpful in 'dark' environments with little monitoring. Performance problems are not always localized to Java, but often fall into the realms of database access and server load. This book gives attention to both of these issues through examples showing how to identify repetitive SQL, and identify architecture-wide performance problems ahead of production rollout. Learn how to apply load like an expert, and determine how much load to apply to determine whether your system scales. Included are walk-throughs of a dozen server-side performance puzzles that are ready to run on your own machine. Following these examples helps you learn to: Assess the performance health of four main problems areas in a Java system: The P.A.t.h. Checklist presents each area with its own set of plug-it-in-now tools Pinpoint the code at fault for CPU and other bottlenecks without a Java profiler Find memory leaks in just minutes using heapSpank, the author's open-source leak detector utility that is freely available from heapSpank.org The repeatable method provided in this book is an antidote to lackluster average response times that are multi-second throughout the industry. This book pro vides a long absent, easy-to-follow, performance training regimen that will benefit anyone programming in Java. What You'll Learn Avoid the 6 most common ways to mess up a load test Determine the exact number of threads to dial into the load generator to test your system's scalability Detect the three most common SQL performance anti-patterns Measure network response times of calls to back-end systems ('alien systems') Identify whether garbage collection performance is healthy or unhealthy and whether delays are caused by problems in the old or new generation, s...

Abstract: Learn Docker "infrastructure as code" technology to define a system for performing standard but non-trivial data tasks on medium- to large-scale data sets, using Jupyter as the master controller. It is not uncommon for a real-world data set to fail to be easily managed. The set may not fit well into access memory or may require prohibitively long processing. These are significant challenges to skilled software engineers and they can render the standard Jupyter system unusable. As a solution to this problem, Docker for Data Science proposes using Docker. You will learn how to use existing pre-compiled public images created by the major open-source technologies-Python, Jupyter, Postgres-as well as using the Dockerfile to extend these images to suit your specific purposes. The Docker-Compose technology is examined and you will learn how it can be used to build a linked system with Python churning data behind the scenes and Jupyter managing these background tasks. Best practices in using existing images are explored as well as developing your own images to deploy state-of-the-art machine learning and optimization algorithms. Abstract: Learn to build hybrid mobile apps using Ionic and Firebase. You'll build a Hacker News client app, which can view top stories in Hacker News, view comments of a story, add stories to favorites, etc. This introductory guide covers the whole cycle of hybrid mobile apps development. It's organized around implementing different user stories. For each story, this book not only talks about how to implement it but also explains related Ionic and Firebase concepts in detail. Using Apache Cordova, developers can create a new type of mobile app-a hybrid mobile app. Hybrid mobile apps actually run in an internal browser inside a wrapper created by Apache Cordova. With hybrid mobile apps, developers can have one single code base for different platforms. Developers also can use their existing web development skills. The Ionic framework builds on top of Apache Cordova and provides out-of-box components which make developing hybrid mobile apps much easier. Ionic uses Angular as the JavaScript framework and has a nice default UI style with a similar look and feel to native apps. Firebase is a realtime database which can be accessed in web apps using JavaScript. Abstract: Learn how to build web applications from three Microsoft MVPs. After building the data application layer using Entity Framework Core and a RESTful service using ASP.NET Core, you will then build the client side web application three ways: first, using ASP.NET Core, then using Angular 2, and, finally, using React. You will be able to compare and contrast these UI frameworks and select the best one for your needs. .NET Core is a complete rewrite of the popular .NET and its related frameworks. While many concepts are similar between .NET Core and the .NET 4.6 framework, there are revolutionary changes as well, including updates to Entity Framework Core and ASP.NET Core. The first section of this book covers the three main parts of building applications with C#: Entity Framework, ASP.NET Core Services, and ASP.NET Core Web Applications. There is also an explosion in popularity of JavaScript frameworks for client side development, and the authors cover two of the most popular UI frameworks. Start with TypeScript for developing clean JavaScript, along with a client side build tool such as Gulp, Grunt, and WebPack. Abstract: Learn the many design decisions that must be made before starting to build a large Oracle Application Express (APEX) application for the cloud or enterprise. One of APEX's key strengths is the fact that it is a Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool. This is also a major weakness when it tempts developers to start coding too soon. Small applications that consist of tens of pages can be coded without a lot of design work because they can be re-factored quickly when design flaws are discovered. Design flaws in large cloud and enterprise applications that consist of hundreds or thousands of pages are not so easy to re-factor due to the time needed to redevelop and retest the application, not to mention the risk of breaking functionality in subtle ways. Designing a large application before coding starts is a profitable exercise because a thoughtful design goes a long way in mitigating cost overruns and schedule slippage while simultaneously enhancing quality. This book takes into account perspectives from other non-developer stakeholders such as maintenance developers, business analysts, testers, technical writers, end users, and business owners. Overlooking these perspectives is one of the chief causes of expensive rework late in the development cycle. Oracle Application Express by Design illustrates APEX design principles by using architecture diagrams, screen shots, and explicit code snippets to guide developers through the many design choices and complex interrelationship issues that must be evaluated before embarking on large APEX projects. This book: Guides you through important, up-front APEX design decisions Helps you to optimize your design by keeping all stakeholders in mind Explicit code examples show how design impacts cost, schedule, and quality What You Will Learn Pick and choose from the list of designs before coding begins Bake optimal quality into the underlying fabric of an APEX application Think and design from outside the developer's narrow perspective Optimize APEX application designs to satisfy multiple stakeholder groups Evaluate design options through hands-on, explicit code examples Define and measure success for large cloud and enterprise APEX applications Who This Book Is For APEX developers and development teams

Abstract: Learn how to use the Processing programming language and environment to create Android applications with ease. This book covers the basics of the Processing language, allowing users to effectively program interactive graphics in 2D and 3D. It also details the application of these techniques to different types of Android devices (smartphones, tablets, wearables and smartwatches). Processing for Android walks you through the steps of taking an initial idea to a final app. With this book, you will be able to write engaging apps with interactive visuals driven by motion and location information obtained from the device's sensors; including health data from the wearer, like step count and heart rate. An advantage of Processing for Android over more complex programming environments is the ability for users to focus on the interactions and visual output of their code rather than in the implementation details of the Android platform. This book goes through a comprehensive series of hand-on projects, ranging from simple sketches to more complex projects involving sensors and integration with larger apps. It also covers important aspects such as exporting your Processing projects as signed apps are ready to upload to the Google Play store and be share with the world! Abstract: Learn to build custom SSIS tasks using Visual Studio Community Edition and Visual Basic. Bring all the power of Microsoft .NET to bear on your data integration and ETL processes, and for no added cost over what you've already spent on licensing SQL Server. If you already have a license for SQL Server, then you do not need to spend more money to extend SSIS with custom tasks and components. Why are custom components necessary? Because even though the SSIS catalog of built-in tasks and components is a marvel of engineering, there do remain gaps in the functionality that is provided. These gaps are especially relevant to enterprises practicing Data Integration Lifecycle Management (DILMS) and/or DevOps. One of the gaps is a limitation of the SSIS Execute Package task. Developers using the stock version of that task are unable to select SSIS packages from other projects. Yet it's useful to be able to select and execute tasks across projects, and the example used throughout this book will help you to create an Execute Catalog Package task that does in fact allow you to execute a task from another project. Building on the example's pattern, you can create any task that you like, custom tailored to your specific, data integration and ETL needs. What You Will Learn Configure and execute Visual Studio in the way that best supports SSIS task development Create a class library as the basis for an SSIS task, and reference the needed SSIS assemblies Properly sign assemblies that you create in order to invoke them from your task Implement source code control via Visual Studio Team Services, or your own favorite tool set Code not only your tasks themselves, but also the associated task editors Troubleshoot and then execute your custom tasks as part of your own project Who This Book Is For Database administrators and developers who are involved in ETL projects built around SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). Readers should have a background in programming along with a desire to optimize their ETL efforts by creating custom-tailored tasks for execution from SSIS packages.

Abstract: Assemble the complete stack required to build a modern web app using React: MongoDB (a NoSQL database) and Express (a framework for web application servers), which runs on Node (JavaScript on the server side), complement React very nicely. This book will also cover many other tools that go into building a complete web application: React Router, React-Bootstrap, Redux, Babel, and webpack. Though the primary focus of Pro MERN Stack is to equip you with all that is required to build a full-fledged web application, a large portion of the book will be devoted to React. The popular MEAN (MongoDB, Express, AngularJS, Node) stack introduced Single Page Apps (SPAs) and front-end Model-View-Controller (MVC) as new and efficient paradigms. But it has its shortcomings such as lack of support for SEO friendly server-side rendering and being too prescriptive by being a framework. Facebook's React is a technology that competes indirectly with AngularJS. It is not a full-fledged MVC framework. It is a JavaScript library for building user interfaces (in some sense the View part). Yet, it is possible to build a web app by replacing AngularJS with React - hence the term MERN stack. What You Will Learn Discover the details of React, the React Way, and how to get the maximum out of this library See the basics of MongoDB, Express, and Node, enough to build a web app Work with other tools complementary to React, including React-Bootstrap and React Router Use the tools required to build JavaScript based SPAs Tie all the components together to build a complete web app. Who This Book Is For Developers and architects who have prior experience in any web app stack other than the MERN stack will find the book useful to learn about this modern stack. Prior knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS is required.
