Abstract: Der Film portraitiert ein katholisches Dorf im Oldenburger Münsterland (Niedersachsen) aus Anlaß der Primizfeier des 28jährigen Hagstedters Hermann Backhaus. Zwei Wochen nach seiner Priesterweihe in Rom feiert ganz Hagstedt seine erste Messe, die sog. Primiz, in seinem Heimatdorf.
Abstract: Hagstedt - a little farming community situated in a catholic enclave in Lower Saxony/Germany is preparing for a feast: one of the village's sons, 28-year-old Hermann Backhaus, was ordained as a priest in Rome. Now he will come home to celebrate his first mass in his parish. Weeks before this event the villagers assemble in order to get greenery, make paper roses and wreaths and decorate their village. The film follows these preparations that are organized due to a complicated system of neighbourhoods and ends with the first mass, that - as a 'rite de passage' - changes Hermann from being the 'nice boy from next door' to a man who now represents a profession of prestige and dignity.

Abstract: Homeless men and women in downtown Hamburg were filmed over a six-month period of ethnographic fieldwork. While homeless are often represented as outcasts of society, this film shows the construction of intricate social networks, with alliances and sanctions, not unlike those of the working and consuming public that occupies Hamburg's central business district during daytime. The camera offers a view of daily routines and work, as well as leisure time which is spent socializing on a public square equipped with a container for luggage. Intimately, and with sometimes disenchanted frankness the protagonists reflect on the circumstances of their situation between romance and tragedy, past disappointments and future ambitions.

Abstract: A pioneering work in comparative history and social science that compares population behavior in response to adversity in Europe and Asia. This highly original book--the first in a series analyzing historical population behavior in Europe and Asia--pioneers a new approach to the comparative analysis of societies in the past. Using techniques of event history analysis, the authors examine 100,000 life histories in 100 rural communities in Western Europe and Asia to analyze the demographic response to social and economic pressures. In doing so they challenge the accepted Eurocentric Malthusian view of population processes and demonstrate that population behavior has not been as uniform as previously thought--that it has often been determined by human agency, particularly social structure and cultural practice. The authors examine the complex relationship between human behavior and social and economic environment, analyzing age, gender, family, kinship, social class and social organization, climate, food prices, and real wages to compare mortality responses to adversity. Their research at the individual, household, and community levels challenges the previously accepted characterizations of social and economic behavior in Europe and Asia in the past. The originality of the analysis as well as the geographic breadth and historical depth of the data make Life Under Pressure a significant advance in the field of historical demography. Its findings will be of interest to scholars in economics, environmental studies, demography, history, and sociology as well as the general reader interested in these subjects

Abstract: The nineteenth century, a time of far-reaching cultural, political, and socio-economic transformation in Europe, brought about fundamental changes in the role of women. Women achieved this by fighting for their rights in the legal, economic, and political spheres. In the various parts of Europe, this process went forward at different paces and followed different patterns. Most historical research up to now has ignored this diversity, preferring to focus on women's emancipation movements in major western European countries such as Britain and France. The present volume provides a broader context to the movement by including countries, both large and small, from all regions of Europe. Fourteen historians, all of them specialists in women's history, examine the origins and development of women's emancipation movements in their respective areas of expertise. By exploring the cultural and political diversity of nineteenth-century Europe and at the same time pointing out connections to questions explored by conventional scholarship, the essays shed new light on common developments and problems

Abstract: We are witnessing a dynamic reshaping of the European 'mediascape'. This has been underway for more than a decade since the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, the growing impact of globalisation, and the birth of new technologies and new media, or the convergence between old and new media. A new and more intense 'mediatisation' of society and everyday life is emerging. This is happening alongside the rapid reconstruction of the cultural and economic landscape of Europe itself. In this transformation the communicative and ideological dimensions, the digitalisation of technology, and changes in cu

Abstract: This series consists of books arising from the intellectual work of ECCR members. The globalisation of social, cultural and economic relations is facilitated, and at the same time conditioned by developments in the information and communications technologies (ICT) and infrastructure. Human knowledge brought mankind from an oral to a literate culture, thanks to the invention of the print media. The development of the electronic media in the last century paved the path for the information age, in which spatial and temporal constraints are lifted. ''In every society, the production, distribution

Abstract: The 15 original essays in Race and Racism in Continental Philosophy explore the resources that continental philosophy brings to debates about contemporary race theory and investigate the racism of some of Europe's most important thinkers. Attention is devoted to the influence of the work of W.E.B. Du Bois, Jean-Paul Sartre, Richard Wright, and Frantz Fanon. Questions about race in European philosophy -- especially in the work of Nietzsche, Heidegger, Lévi-Strauss, and Arendt -- are also considered

Abstract: What explains the rapid growth of state power in early modern Europe? While most scholars have pointed to the impact of military or capitalist revolutions, Philip S. Gorski argues instead for the importance of a disciplinary revolution unleashed by the Reformation. By refining and diffusing a variety of disciplinary techniques and strategies, such as communal surveillance, control through incarceration, and bureaucratic office-holding, Calvin and his followers created an infrastructure of religious governance and social control that served as a model for the rest of Europe--and the world

Abstract: This volume gives an up-to-date account of various situations of language contact and multilingualism in Europe especially from a historical point of view. Its ten contributions present newly collected data from different parts of the continent seen through diverse theoretical perspectives. They show a richness of topics and data that not only reveal numerous historical and sociological facts but also afford considerable insight into possible effects multilingualism and language contact might have on language change. The collection begins its journey through Europe in the British Isles. Then i

Abstract: This collection of essays offers a novel approach to the cultural and social history of Europe after the Second World War. In a shift of perspective, it does not conceive of the impressive economic and political stability of the postwar era as a quasi-natural return to previous patterns of societal development but approaches it as an attempt to establish 'normality' upon the lingering memories of experiencing violence on a hitherto unprecedented scale. It views the relationship of the violence of the 1940s to the apparent 'normality' and stability of the 1950s as a key to understanding the history of post-war Europe. While the history of post-war Germany naturally looms large in this collection, the essays deal with countries across Western and Central Europe, offer comparative perspectives on their subjects, and draw upon a wide range of primary and secondary source material

Abstract: Publisher description: Sparta, which existed from 800 B.C. until A.D. 200, was renowned in the ancient world as a stoic and martial city-state, and most of what we know about Sparta concerns its military history and male-dominated social structure. Yet Spartan women were in many ways among the most liberated of the ancient world, receiving formal instruction in poetry, music, dance, and physical education. And the most famous of mythic Greek women, Helen of Troy, was originally a Spartan. Written by one of the leading authorities on women in antiquity, Spartan Women seeks to reconstruct the lives and the world of Sparta's women, including how their legal status changed over time and how they held on to their surprising autonomy. In this book, Sarah Pomeroy covers over a thousand years in the lives of Sparta's women from both the elite and lower classes. This is the first book-length examination of Spartan women, and Pomeroy comprehensively analyzes ancient texts and archaeological evidence to construct the history of these elusive though much noticed women

Abstract: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "Despite the large-scale development of electronic communications in all scientific fields, experiences show that face-to-face communication remains essential, particularly in developing co-operation and networks. Therefore the GESIS Branch Office Berlin organized a workshop, that should serve as a forum both to exchange experiences of how to establish a data archive and to evaluate the potential for the establishment of data archives in Eastern European countries without a developed data infrastructure. The reports on data archiving in 13 Eastern European countries (Bulgaria, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Slovakia, Romania, Slovenia and Hungary) are presented in this volume and the creation of the East European Data Archive Network is described."

Abstract: "Sport and nationalism are arguably two of the most emotional issues in the modern world. Both inspire intense devotion and frequently lead to violence. In this book, Alan Bairner discusses the relationship between sport and national identities in Europe and North America - specifically Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, the United States, and Canada - within the context of a broader theoretical debate about the impact of globalization in the modern era. Through a unique comparative perspective, the author sheds new light on the ways sport impacts the construction and reproduction of national identities. Ultimately, the work considers the role of sport in allowing nations and nationalists to resist, or at least come to terms with, powerful globalizing pressures."--Jacket

Abstract: "Millions of immigrants were drawn to American shores, not by the mythic streets paved with gold, but rather by its tables heaped with food. How they experienced the realities of America's abundant food - its meat and white bread, its butter and cheese, fruits and vegetables, coffee and beer - reflected their earlier deprivations and shaped their ethnic practices in the new land."
Abstract: "Hungering for America tells the stories of three distinctive groups and their unique culinary dramas. Italian immigrants transformed the food of their upper classes and of sacred days into a generic "Italian" food that inspired community pride and cohesion. Irish immigrants, in contrast, loath to mimic the foodways of the Protestant British elite, diminished food as a marker of ethnicity. And East European Jews, who venerated food as the vital center of family and religious practice, found that dietary restrictions jarred with America's boundless choices."--Jacket

Abstract: Seit der 1.

Film C 12739, W 12992).
Abstract: Three cattlemen from Mali and Burkina Faso travel across Switzerland and meet three dairy farmers and cheesemakers living in Seeland and Berner Oberland. Back in their own countries, they relate their experiences of this "rich" Alpine region to friends and neighbours. Discussions arise over cows and milk, the economy and progress, and the relationship between man and nature (see also film C 12739, W 12992).
