Abstract: "Memories of Africa: Home and Abroad in the United States suggests a "new lens" for viewing African diaspora studies, in this case, through the experiences of African memoirists who live in the United States. The book shows how African diaspora memoirs beautifully and grippingly depict the experiences of African migrants over time through political, social, and cultural spheres. In reading African diaspora memoirs from the transatlantic slave trade period to the present, a reader can understand the complexity of the African migrant legacy and evolution. Author Toyin Falola argues that memoirs are significant not only in their interpretation of events conveyed by the memoirists but also in demonstrating how interpersonal and human the stories told can be. Memoirs are powerful because they are emotionally captivating and because important themes and events circulate around a particular person (in this case, the memoirist). Undoubtedly, a memoir is significant because it can teach anyone about a part of the human experience, even if the "facts" are not described without bias. Through this sort of narrative, the reader cannot help but enter into the memoirist's mind and, therefore, feel more empathy for them. In doing so, the reader can "feel" what the memoirist feels and "see" what the memoirist sees as clearly as is humanly possible. In this way, the historical events and life lessons become tangible and poignantly real to the reader"--

Abstract: "Focused on research within Africa and the African diaspora, contributors to this volume think through the painful iterations of trauma, systemic racism, and the vestiges of colonial oppression as well as the processes of healing and emancipation that emerge from wounded states. Their chapters explore an acoustemology of intimacy, woman-centered eroticism generated through musical performance, desire and longing in ethnographic knowledge production, and listening as intimacy. On the other end of the spectrum, authors engage with and question the fetishization of race in jazz; examine conceptions of vulgarity and profanity in movement and dance-ethnography; and address pain, trauma, and violation, whether physical, spiritual, intellectual, or political. Authors in this volume strive toward empathetic, ethical, and creative ethnographic engagements that summon vulnerability and healing. They propose pathways to aesthetic, discursive transformation by reorienting conceptions of knowledge as emergent, performative, and sonically enabled. The resulting book explores sensory knowledge that is frequently left unacknowledged in ethnographic work, advancing conversations about performed sonic and somatic modalities through which we navigate our entanglements as engaged scholars"--

Abstract: Today, African immigrants constitute a growing and increasingly visible component of the US population. African Immigrants in the United States: The Gendering Significance of Race? takes a closer look at the growth of African immigration to the United States in recent decades, as well as implications of this growth. Mamadi Corra highlights several resulting sociodemographic processes underway, including the changing composition of the foreign-born and US Black populations. Corra also takes a closer look at sociodemographic profiles of these "new African Americans" or "new Americans," highlighting the increasing diversity, yet also the racialized portrait of this group of immigrants. Key patterns discussed include the shifting racial and gender composition of immigrants, with a growing proportion of "Black" and female African immigrants on one hand and a decreasing proportion of "White" and male immigrants on the other hand. The book also compares socioeconomic profiles of African immigrants with other immigrant groups, as well as native-American subgroups. Taken together, Corra discovers that the salience of race that is mediated by gender

Abstract: This book explores the issues and challenges of gender and development in Africa. The current needs of women in Africa are connected with the possible future emancipation of women from institutions and processes that perpetuate poverty to overcome gendered development processes and patriarchal economic policies at work. The role of legal, political, cultural, religious, and economic institutions in development are examined to highlight marginalisation within uneven development processes embedded with capitalism. Broader development issues, such as property rights, food security, accessibility of resources, and environmental change, are also discussed. This book aims to reimagine African development from an issue-based perspective that moves beyond gender stereotypes and narrow silo of patriarchal development. The volume is relevant to students and researchers interested in the political economy, development and feminist economics. Bhabani Shankar Nayak is a political economist and works as Professor of Business Management and Programme Director of Strategic Business and Management at the University for the Creative Arts, UK.

Abstract: "This book argues that if African philosophy hopes to truly represent the thoughts of Africans across the continent, women's perspectives and gender issues need to be mainstreamed across the discipline. African philosophy emerged as an academic discipline as a direct challenge to Western and Eurocentric hegemonies, seeking to actualise the project of decolonization and to contribute African perspectives to world discourses. However, the field has been dominated by male perspectives. This book argues that, until the androcentric nature of African philosophy is addressed, African philosophy cannot claim to have liberated people of African origin from marginalization. Key concepts such as Ujamaa, Negritude, Ubuntu, and African Socialism are examined in terms of how they impact African women's lives or as theories of inclusion or exclusion from politics. The book also introduces topics which have been overlooked in African philosophy, such as sex, sexuality, rape, motherhood, prostitution, low participation of women in politics, and polygamy. Highlighting the work of notable African feminist scholars such as Sophie Oluwole, Oyeronke Oyewumi, Nkiru Nzegwu, and Louise du Toit, the book will be an important resource for students and researchers of African philosophy and gender studies"--

Abstract: "Hidden information, double meanings, double-crossing, and the constant processes of encoding and decoding messages have always been important techniques in negotiating social and political power dynamics. Yet these tools, "cryptopolitics," are transformed when used within digital media. Focusing on African societies, Cryptopolitics brings together empirically grounded studies of digital media to consider public culture, sociality, and power in all its forms, illustrating the analytical potential of cryptopolitics to elucidate intimate relationships, political protest, and economic strategies in the digital age"--

Abstract: Scream for Me Africa! examines the hard rock and metal scenes in five African countries: Botswana, Togo, South Africa, Kenya and Ghana. Banchs spent significant time in each country interviewing musicians, producers and fans to create vivid pictures of each of these rarely discussed scenes. This book considers how the subculture of heavy metal is viewed in post-colonial Africa, and how musicians in the continent have stepped forward to make this genre their own. It looks at the continent's blossoming scenes through various themes including hybridity, othering and political tensions.--back cover

Abstract: "The role of indigenous knowledge in development has not been examined enough. Indigenous knowledge systems tend to mean different things to different people, so is culture. Culture is undoubtedly critical for development but often underplayed or misunderstood. Development in Africa remains elusive. Those who are supposed to benefit from interventions aimed at improving wellbeing are often not involved in decision making regarding those interventions. Indigenous knowledge culture and indigenous languages are usually ignored when conceiving policies aimed at advancing development. This book – a collection of chapters on these issues – demonstrate the importance of indigenous systems in development. Indigenous knowledge plays a role in development practice because of its capacity to generate transferable local skills and set energies in motion to reduce the prevailing inequalities on the continent. In an effort to resolve the enduring puzzle of development in Africa, the role of Indigenous knowledge is thus affirmed as important. The book advocates for paradigm shift in development thinking and practice that reinforces the use of indigenous knowledge as a first line of action in the process of development Africa." --

Abstract: "A dazzling history of Africans in Europe, revealing their unacknowledged role in shaping the continent. Conventional wisdom holds that Africans are only a recent presence in Europe. But in African Europeans, renowned historian Olivette Otele debunks this and uncovers a long history of Europeans of African descent. From the third century, when the Egyptian Saint Maurice became the leader of a Roman legion, all the way up to the present, Otele explores encounters between those defined as "Africans" and those called "Europeans." She gives equal attention to the most prominent figures--like Alessandro de Medici, the first duke of Florence thought to have been born to a free African woman in a Roman village--and the untold stories--like the lives of dual-heritage families in Europe's coastal trading towns. African Europeans is a landmark celebration of this integral, vibrantly complex slice of European history, and will redefine the field for years to come."--Amazon

Abstract: Sociological foundations of education in Africa: Perspectives, contexts and contemporary issues is a comprehensive and relevant text that looks at the sociology of education from a local South African and a regional African perspective.|bSociological foundations of education in Africa: Perspectives, contexts and contemporary issues is a comprehensive and relevant text that looks at the sociology of education from a local South African and a regional African perspective. It is appropriate for undergraduate modules in sociology of education in the Bachelor of Education, and for PGCE and B. Ed (Honours) courses. The book contributes to the Africanisation of the education curriculum by contextualising international theorists such as Durkheim, Weber, Marx, Mills, and Comte while infusing Afrocentric scholars such as Asante, Rodney, Chukwuokolo, Nyerere, Carnoy, Ngugi wa Thiong'o, and Chiwane, throughout the text. As such, Eurocentric and Afrocentric sociological perspectives are placed in dialogue, complementing and contesting each other in the study of education in Africa

Abstract: McKinley draws on her extensive collection of historical and contemporary photos to present a visual history of African women across centuries. These images tell how deeply cosmopolitan and modern they are in their style; how they were able to reclaim the tools of the colonial oppression that threatened their selfhood and livelihoods. She shows that, while African studios captured the dignity, austerity, and grandeur of African women, photos by Europeans are mostly nudes, revealing the relationships of white men and Black females: at best, a grave power imbalance. -- adapted from jacket

Abstract: The persecution of people in Africa for their assumed homosexual orientation has received considerable media coverage in recent years. However, much of the analysis has criticized African leadership and culture without considering local nuances, historical factors and external influences. Based on pioneering historical research and engagement with lgbti and HIV/AIDS activism, this book provides a sympathetic overview of the issues and a hope outlook on the potential of sexual rights for all
Abstract: "The persecution of people in Africa on the basis of their assumed or perceived homosexual orientation has received considerable coverage in the popular media in recent years. Gay-bashing by political and religious figures in Zimbabwe and Gambia; draconian new laws against lesbians and gays and their supporters in Malawi, Nigeria and Uganda; and the imprisonment and extortion of gay men in Senegal and Cameroon have all rightly sparked international condemnation. However, much of the analysis thus far has been highly critical of African leadership and culture without considering local nuances, historical factors and external influences that are contributing to the problem. Such commentary also overlooks grounds for optimism in the struggle for sexual rights and justice in Africa, not just for sexual minorities but for the majority population as well. Based on pioneering research on the history of homosexualities and engagement with current lgbti and HIV/AIDS activism, Marc Epprecht provides a sympathetic overview of the issues at play and a hopeful outlook on the potential of sexual rights for all."--Page 4 of cover

Abstract: Der Autor, Professor für Aussereuropäische Geschichte an der Universität Duisburg-Essen und Verfasser zahlreicher Veröffentlichungen zur Geschichte Afrikas (vgl. u.a. Vertiefende Ergänzung zu Heinrich Barths eigenen Reisebeschreibungen (vgl. u.a. Abstract: "The term 'African Potentials' refers to the knowledge, systems, practices, ideas and values created and implemented in African societies that are expected to contribute to overcoming various challenges and promoting people's wellbeing. This collection of articles, focused on African societies, is based on the idea that 'Africa is People'. In this book, African people are placed at the centre of the discussion. The book's contributors, all of whom believe in African people and their potentials, consider women, minors and young people, people with disabilities, entrepreneurs, herders, farmers, mine workers, refugees, migrants, traditional rulers, militiamen and members of the political elite, and examine their predicaments and potentials in detail. Africa is people, and African potentials can be found only in African people themselves."--Publisher

Abstract: "This volume addresses two primary research concerns: first, considering extraversion (or extroversion) as a term for characterizing a region that is "mobilizing resources from their (possibly unequal) relationship with the external environment", a dynamic that constitutes a possible African potential; and, second, a survey of competing systems and strategies with a focus on relationships between formal and informal institutions in terms of their collaborations and conflicts. In addition, this volume contains three chapters examining very recent African responses to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic from a variety of perspectives. The final part of this volume contains an important contribution to the conceptualization of 'African Potentials'. This has proven to be a significant conceptual innovation, that allows intellectual access to alternative ways of thinking about latent ideas of universality."-Back cover

Abstract: The recent movements in the United States in favour of African-American rights have highlighted many issues, including a tragic aspect of the slave trade: that millions were robbed not only of their freedom in being transported to another continent but also of their heritage, including their language, their memories and their cultural traditions. Among West African countries involved in the transatlantic slave trade, Ghana was one of the most important and the Ghana Tourism Authority has recognized that a return to the continent of their roots may offer some consolation. In 2019, to mark the 400 years since enslaved black people first arrived in America, the GTA launched the 'Year of Return' campaign, honouring the resilience of black people around the world and encouraging them to return to Ghana to explore their roots and ancestry. The campaign was promoted and supported by many influencers and celebrities from both sides of the Atlantic. African Americans were invited to Ghana not only to honour their ancestors' memory, visit heritage sites, and enjoy the attractions such as the music, beaches and nightlife, but also to network and build connections longer term. A 'Beyond the Return' campaign has positioned Ghana as a land of opportunity for the global African family - whether in agriculture, real estate, creative arts or other fields - and it invites black people from around the world to invest socially and financially in the country. The authorities are committed to foster those international connections with simplified visa application process and offering the chance to obtain citizenship through special programmes.

Abstract: The powerful story of two young men who changed the national debate about slavery In the 1820s, few Americans could imagine a viable future for black children. Even abolitionists saw just two options for African American youth: permanent subjection or exile. Educated for Freedom tells the story of James McCune Smith and Henry Highland Garnet, two black children who came of age and into freedom as their country struggled to grow from a slave nation into a free country. Smith and Garnet met as schoolboys at the Mulberry Street New York African Free School, an educational experiment created by founding fathers who believed in freedom's power to transform the country. Smith and Garnet's achievements were near-miraculous in a nation that refused to acknowledge black talent or potential. The sons of enslaved mothers, these schoolboy friends would go on to travel the world, meet Revolutionary War heroes, publish in medical journals, address Congress, and speak before cheering crowds of thousands. The lessons they took from their days at the New York African Free School #2 shed light on how antebellum Americans viewed black children as symbols of America's possible future. The story of their lives, their work, and their friendship testifies to the imagination and activism of the free black community that shaped the national journey toward freedom

Abstract: Images and stories about African sexuality abound in today's globalized media. Frequently old stereotypes and popular opinion inform these stories, and sex in the media is predominately approached as a problem in need of solutions and intervention. The authors gathered here refuse an easy characterization of African sexuality and instead seek to understand the various erotic realities, sexual practices, and gendered changes taking place across the continent. They present a nuanced and comprehensive overview of the field of sex and sexuality in Africa to serve as a guide though the quickly expanding literature. This collection offers a set of texts that use sexuality as a prism for studying how communities coalesce against the canvas of larger political and economic contexts and how personal lives evolve therein. Scholars working in Africa, the U.S., and Europe reflect on issues of representation, health and bio-politics, same-sex relationships and identity, transactional economies of sex, religion and tradition, and the importance of pleasure and agency. This multidimensional reader provides a comprehensive view of sexuality from an African perspective

Abstract: An unapologetically African-centered monograph that reveals physical and spiritual forms and systems of female power and leadership in African cultures. Nwando Achebe’s unparalleled study documents elite females, female principles, and female spiritual entities across the African continent, from the ancient past to the present. Achebe breaks from Western perspectives, research methods, and their consequently incomplete, skewed accounts, to demonstrate the critical importance of distinctly African source materials and world views to any comprehensible African history. This means accounting for the two realities of African cosmology: the physical world of humans and the invisible realm of spiritual gods and forces. That interconnected universe allows biological men and women to become female-gendered males and male-gendered females. This phenomenon empowers the existence of particular African beings, such as female husbands, male priestesses, female kings, and female pharaohs. Achebe portrays their combined power, influence, and authority in a sweeping, African-centric narrative that leads to an analogous consideration of contemporary African women as heads of state, government officials, religious leaders, and prominent entrepreneurs

Abstract: "The playwright, poet, essayist, activist, and Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka is also a longtime art collector. In this book of essays, he offers a glimpse into the motivations of the collector, as well as a highly personal look at the politics of aesthetics and collecting. Detailing moments of first encounter with objects that drew him in and continue to affect him, Soyinka describes a world of mortals, muses, and deities that imbue the artworks with history and meaning. Beyond Aesthetics is a passionate discussion of the role of identity, tradition, and originality in making, collecting, and exhibiting African art today. Soyinka considers objects that have stirred controversy, and he decries dogmatic efforts-whether colonial or religious-to suppress Africa's artistic traditions. By turns poetic, provocative, and humorous, Soyinka affirms the power of collecting to reclaim tradition. He urges African artists, filmmakers, collectors, and curators to engage with their aesthetic and cultural histories"--

Abstract: Argues that the slave narrative is a new world literary genre. In Runaway Genres, Yogita Goyal tracks the emergence of slavery as the defining template through which current forms of human rights abuses are understood. The post-black satire of Paul Beatty and Mat Johnson, modern slave narratives from Sudan to Sierra Leone, and the new Afropolitan diaspora of writers like Teju Cole and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie all are woven into Goyal's argument for the slave narrative as a new world literary genre, exploring the full complexity of this new ethical globalism. From the humanitarian spectacles of Kony 2012 and #BringBackOurGirls through gothic literature, Runaway Genres unravels, for instance, how and why the African child soldier has now appeared as the afterlife of the Atlantic slave.Goyal argues that in order to fathom forms of freedom and bondage today-from unlawful detention to sex trafficking to the refugee crisis to genocide we must turn to contemporary literature, which reveals how the literary forms used to tell these stories derive from the antebellum genre of the slave narrative. Exploring the ethics and aesthetics of globalism, the book presents alternative conceptions of human rights, showing that the revival and proliferation of slave narratives offers not just an occasion to revisit the Atlantic past, but also for re-narrating the global present. In reassessing these legacies and their ongoing relation to race and the human, Runaway Genres creates a new map with which to navigate contemporary black diaspora literature.

Abstract: Kristina Bekenova presents a collection of interviews with fifteen African emerging leaders, young scholars and researchers, musicians, poets, artists, doctors, philanthropists, environmentalists, defenders of animal rights, tour operators, and treasurers of traditional culture, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Nigeria, Malawi, Rwanda, Somaliland, South Africa, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe. These interviews are an important, effective, and efficient way to make Africa's authentic voices heard. The interviewees explain what Africa needs most, what they are doing about it, what vision for Africa they have, and how they think their ideas can be implemented. They share genuine African bottom-up perspectives, voice their understanding of African natural and cultural issues, identify Africa's true needs, and formulate recommendations from an original African perspective. This book presents a unique opportunity to hear their message and to think more carefully about how we can help Africa along its developmental path

Abstract: "Going beyond photography as an isolated medium to engage larger questions and interlocking forms of expression and historical analysis, Ambivalent gathers a new generation of scholars based on the continent to offer an expansive frame for thinking about questions of photography and visibility in Africa. The volume presents African relationships with photography-and with visibility more generally-in ways that engage and disrupt the easy categories and genres that have characterized the field to date. Authors pose new questions concerning the instability of the identity photograph in South Africa; ethnographic photographs as potential history; humanitarian discourse from the perspective of photographic survivors of atrocity photojournalism; the nuanced passage from studio to screen in postcolonial digital portraiture; and the burgeoning visual activism in West Africa. As the contributors show, photography is itself a historical subject: it involves arrangement, financing, posture, positioning, and other kinds of work that are otherwise invisible. By moving us outside the frame of the photograph itself, by refusing to accept the photograph as the last word, this book makes photography into an engaging and important subject of historical investigation. Ambivalent's contributors bring photography into conversation with orality, travel writing, ritual, psychoanalysis, and politics, with new approaches to questions of race, time, and postcolonial and decolonial histories"--

Abstract: "Peacekeeping training centres play a crucial role in preparing peacekeepers for their deployment. However, despite their popularity within the international community as a tool for achieving international security, development and statebuilding objectives, they have not received a great deal of analysis or academic attention. This book provides an in-depth analysis of peacekeeping training in Africa, tracing how centres have adapted to the operational and normative changes of peace operations over time, and raising questions about the expectations attached to these training efforts and their impact. The book examines training content and methods in detail, exploring the potential of peacekeeping training centres as sites for socialisation and diffusing international norms in an effort to change and shape peacekeepers' behaviour. The analysis is based on two contrasting case studies, selected to show the spectrum of training centres operating in Africa, namely the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre in Accra, Ghana and the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes in Durban, South Africa. At a time when impact is being determined by the number of course attendees, this book provides an important critical assesment of training efforts and what they are supposed to achieve. It will be of interest to scholars and practitioners within the fields of international security, peacekeeping, and African development"--

Abstract: "The collection of scholarly essays 'Striking Iron: The Art of African Blacksmiths' accompanies an international traveling exhibition of the same title organized by the Fowler Museum at UCLA. For more than two millennia, ironworking has shaped African cultures in the most fundamental ways. 'Striking Iron' reveals the history of invention and technical sophistication that led African blacksmiths to transform one of Earth's most basic natural resources into objects of life-changing utility, empowerment, prestige, spiritual potency, and astonishing artistry. The contributions of diverse scholars examine how blacksmiths' virtuosic works can harness the powers of the natural and spiritual worlds, effect change and ensure protection, prestige, and status, assist with life's challenges and transitions, and enhance the efficacies of sacred acts such as ancestor veneration, healing, fertility, and prophecy. The publication features full-color photographic reproductions of over 225 artworks from across the African continent, focusing on the region south of the Sahara and covering a time period spanning early archaeological evidence to the present day. These works include blades, currencies, diverse musical instruments, body adornments, ritual accoutrements, tools, weapons, and other important iron objects. Following its presentation at the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles the exhibition 'Striking Iron' travels to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art, Washington D.C., and the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, Paris"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: Dieser Band beleuchtet verschiedene Aspekte der Rückkehr hochgebildeter Migranten aus Ghana.
Abstract: Focusing on the issue of belonging as a substantial human social need, this book studies how skilled Ghanaian returnees cope with their return to their country of origin, depending on their previous experiences in Ghana and the foreign country they lived in for a while. Using the empirical basis of qualitative interview data, the book identifies the relationship between reintegration and sense of belonging, and argues that sense of belonging is a dimension of social reintegration for returning migrants. The key findings of this study show that returnees’ definitions of belonging fall into two categories: individual belonging (belonging to a place) and social/collective belonging (politics of belonging). Within these categories, belonging is defined in relation to being accepted, feeling at home, not being treated differently, having responsibilities and ownership. Individual belonging is thus expressed via feelings of attachment to Ghana as a place, resulting from factors such as memories of cultural and family heritage

Abstract: People are living longer, not only in wealthy countries but in developing nations. Western experts have long conceived of aging as a universal predicament--one that supposedly provokes the same welfare concerns in every context. In the twenty-first century, we must embrace a new approach that prioritizes local agendas and values. In this history of how gerontologists, doctors, social scientists, and activists came to define the issue of global aging, Sivaramakrishnan shows that the United Nations, private NGOs, and transnational philanthropic foundations embraced programs that reflected prevailing Western ideas about modernization. The dominant paradigm often assumed that, because large-scale growth of an aging population happened first in the West, developing societies will experience the issues of aging in the same ways and on the same terms as their Western counterparts. Focusing on South Asia and Africa, As the World Ages shows how regional voices have begun to question this one-size-fits-all model and have argued instead for an approach that responds to local needs and concerns.--

In the summer of 1813, near what is now Liberia, a compound of pens full to bursting with sick and anguished captives was guarded by other African slaves. As a British patrol swooped down on the illicit barracoon, the slavers burned the premises to the ground, hoping to destroy evidence. This story can be told because of an exceptional trove of court documents that provides unparalleled insight into one small link in the great, horrific chain of slavery. Emma Christopher follows a trail of evidence across four continents to examine the lives of this barracoon's owners, their workers, and their tragic human merchandise. She reveals how an American, Charles Mason, escaped justice; while Robert Bostock and John McQueen were taken prisoner and exiled to Australia. Later, when they appealed their arrest in court, British agents collected the testimony of five African men--Tamba, Tom Ball, Yarra, Noah, and Sessay--whose words bear witness on behalf of 233 nameless Africans liberated in the 1813 raid. These men, women, and children, who were relocated to Freetown, Sierra Leone, endured lives of "freedom" much harsher than we would like to imagine. From the fragmented facts of these lives, Christopher also sheds fascinating light on the early development of the nations of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Australia and the role of former slaves in combatting the illegal trade
