    Abstract: Spanish Fashion in the Age of Velázquez is the first archival study of dress at the court of Philip IV, as told through the life and work of royal tailor Mateo Aguado. Tailor to the queens of Spain from 1630 to 1672, Aguado designed the striking dresses that gave the Spanish court its distinctive look in the Baroque era. The most influential dress designer in the seventeenth-century Spanish world, Aguado was responsible for creating the iconic dresses that appear in some of Diego Velázquez’s most famous court portraits. Based on new research, this book brings to life the world of Aguado and his colleagues at court. The long-lost garments and accessories that the court artisans made for their royal employers are reconstructed here for the first time. Aguado’s creations played a crucial role in domestic and international politics by shaping the royal image, and his dresses took center-stage in major political events during Philip IV’s reign. Richly illustrated with well-known masterpieces along with surviving textiles and garments, the book explores how Aguado’s dress designs shaped a new vision of Spanish style, and Spanishness, that defined Golden-Age Spain

    Abstract: This book examines the involvement of African American artists in the New Deal art programs of the 1930s. Emphasizing broader issues informed by the uniqueness of Black experience rather than individual artists' works, Mary Ann Calo makes the case that the revolutionary vision of these federal art projects is best understood in the context of access to opportunity, mediated by the reality of racial segregation.Focusing primarily on the Federal Art Project (FAP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Calo documents African American artists' participation in community art centers in Harlem, in St. Louis, and throughout the South. She examines the internal workings of the Harlem Artists' Guild, the Guild's activities during the 1930s, and its alliances with other groups, such as the Artists' Union and the National Negro Congress. Calo also explores African American artists' representation in the exhibitions sponsored by WPA administrators and the critical reception of their work. In doing so, she elucidates the evolving meanings of the terms race, culture, and community in the interwar era. The book concludes with an essay by Jacqueline Francis on Black artists in the early 1940s, after the end of the FAP program.Presenting essential new archival information and important insights into the experiences of Black New Deal artists, this study expands the factual record and positions the cumulative evidence within the landscape of critical race studies. It will be welcomed by art historians and American studies scholars specializing in early twentieth-century race relations

Bis heute gehört „das Kassa“ zu den größten kleinen Clubs des Landes. Das Buch besteht aus Gesprächen mit Menschen, die das Kassa prägten — und selbst von diesem Club fürs Leben geprägt wurden. Zum Beispiel Carsten Müller, einst Türsteher, heute Kulturamtsleiter in Jena. Oder Ingrid Sebastian. Die Kinderkrankenschwester wurde von der Stasi überwacht. Nach der Wende wurde sie Hausbesetzerin und Barkeeperin im Kassa. Dort schrieb sie Konzepte, die bis heute die Jugendsozialarbeit der Stadt Jena prägen. Oder der Musiker Oliver Jahn. Erst wurde sein Vater aus der DDR abgeschoben, dann seine Freundin, dann er selbst. In Berlin kämpfte er mit der deutsch-türkischen Antifa auf der Straße gegen Nazis. Als Sozialarbeiter ging er später mit ihnen bergsteigen. Heute organisiert er das Stadtfest in Jena.

    Abstract: This stunning exhibition catalog visualizes what freedom looks like for Black Americans today and the legacy of the Civil War in 2023 and beyond. Emancipation: The Unfinished Project of Liberation sits at the intersection of history and contemporary life. Building upon in-depth conversations about representations of enslavement and emancipation at the close of the Civil War, this project originates from an analysis of sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward's The Freedman (1863), one of the first bronze representations of a Black person in the United States, and expands into an investigation of how living artists envision emancipation, freedom, and liberation today. Featuring interviews with artists Sadie Barnette, Alfred Conteh, Maya Freelon, Hugh Hayden, Letitia Huckaby, Jeffrey Meris, and Sable Elyse Smith, the exhibition catalog explores their practices along with cutting-edge scholarship by Kirsten Pai Buick and Kelvin Parnell, among others, as well as a haunting story of embodiment and exploitation by celebrated science-fiction author N.     Abstract: In 2012 kocht Tammo Schuringa op het Waterlooplein in Amsterdam een opmerkelijke ansichtkaart waarop een vliegende vis staat afgebeeld die een baby in de bek vasthoudt. De kaart bleek het startpunt van een wonderlijke zoektocht. In 'Verrukkelijke babys' ontrafelt Schuringa aan de hand van oude volksverhalen de herkomst van babys. Wie rond 1900 goed oplette kon overal zuigelingen zien, zo dacht men vroeger: ze verscholen zich in eieren, kolen, bomen, bloemen en waterputten. En op 1 april zouden Franse vissen babys aan huis bezorgen. Gedurende de eerste twintig jaar van de vorige eeuw was de ansichtkaart een buitengewoon populair communicatiemiddel. Miljarden kaarten gingen de wereld over. De in dit boek getoonde surrealistische babykaarten waren kortstondig een zeer populair subgenre. 'Verrukkelijke babys' verbeeldt zowel de ontstaansgeschiedenis van de baby als die van de ansichtkaart en vertelt het verhaal van hun succesvolle buitenissige huwelijk

    Abstract: This book explores power in international relations, in a world characterized by the growing competition of major powers for smaller nations. Focusing on the major powers and smaller countries of Eurasia, it argues that power in international relations is different from coercion and is rather a social contract between a leader state and follower states where reciprocity is key and where leadership relationships cannot be adequately explained by focusing solely on the leader. It challenges the perception that genuine regional leadership is quite common, contending instead that it is rare; that much more often major powers make claims for leadership; and that regional leadership does not indicate the status of a particular state, but rather the social role of the leader, which is recognized by its followers, a role which is always relative and based on communication and constant interaction with followers. The book highlights the important role followers play in recognizing regional power, the importance for a state's regional leadership strategy in creating and holding a valuable position attractive for followers and delivering greater value to followers compared to other potential leaders.

    Abstract: "Black Artists in America: From Civil Rights to the Bicentennial explores African American art during the turbulence of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The catalogue considers the various ways in which African American artists responded to growing civil unrest, challenging the cultural, environmental, political, racial, and social issues of the era. In the 1960s, Black artists who came of age during World War II and the increasing civil rights activity of the 1950s continued to challenge inequities in the art world. They created works that celebrated their racial identity, communicated with Black audiences, and participated in the struggle for political, economic, and social equality. The establishment of artist collectives such as Spiral and museums devoted to Black art, including the Studio Museum in Harlem, alongside the emergence of art historians and critics like David Driskell and Linda Goode Bryant, marked early steps to bring Black art into broader artistic discourse. In addition to 140 full-color images of approximately seventy paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from public and private collections across the country, the catalogue features in-depth essays, including original research on artists James Porter and Merton Simpson"--

    Abstract: In 1954-55, two Swiss women-Elsy Leuzinger, later director of the Museum Rietberg in Zurich, and aviation pioneer Jolantha Tschudi-undertook anthropological field research in the hills of northern Nigeria among an ethnic group still practicing a traditional way of life. These remote Afo, now called Eloyi, had never seen white women before. The women from Zurich lived in four different villages, investigating the traditional customs, subsistence economy, and ritual festivals through participant observation and interviews and recording their findings in photographs and films. Their research results were published in German in 1956 and 1966 as well as in two newspaper articles, which also included a small portion of the photographic material. By chance, a large volume of visual material was found in the estate of Jolantha Tschudi in 2019. It is published here for the first time, together with recovered color slides by Elsy Leuzinger. The aim is to make these historical visual documents and research results available in English to the Eloyi people as well as to the general public, along with historical evidence of the first explorations of this region of the Benue and documents from the British colonial occupation

Vom Goldbroiler über den Luftkissenrasenmäher bis hin zu Geschirr und Besteck im DDR-Design – alle diese verschwundenen Gegenstände sind aus einem Land, das nicht mehr existiert. Der Sammelband soll Eindruck und Überblick vermitteln, wie sich das Leben in 40 Jahren DDR abgespielt und entwickelt hat. Es zeigt auch, welchen Einfluss die Partei und deren Ideologie auf das Alltagsleben der Menschen hatte.     Abstract: "The first major catalogue of contemporary Black American collage, Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Art brings together over sixty-five works of art by fifty artists that reflect the breadth and complexity of Black identity. Rather than casting their work solely in terms of a racial discourse that often portrays African Americans as a monolith, these artists employ collage to convey the intersecting facets of their lived experiences that combine to make whole individuals. Building on a technique that has roots in European and American traditions-used by canonical figures from Picasso and Hannah Höch to Robert Rauschenberg and Romare Bearden-the artists have assembled pieces of paper, photographs, fabrics, and other often salvaged materials to create unified compositions that express the endless possibilities of Black-constructed narratives despite the fragmentation of our times. As artist Deborah Roberts asserts, "With collage, I can create a more expansive and inclusive view of the Black cultural experience."     Abstract: From 1998 till 2013, a former railwaycanteen on d'Herbouvillekaai in Antwerp that was transformed into a cultural hub by youthful idealists, hoodlums and enthousiasts who called themselves Scheld'apen, was home to an eclectic stream of artists, with over 1300 events occurring in those 15 years, before inevitably being demolished by city expansion plans. All those events produced a flux of visual communication, an enormous flow of printed media that fascinated artists and Scheld?apen aficionados Benny Van den Meulengracht-Vrancx and Bent Vande Sompele. Collecting items and building upon an already existing physical archive, they decided to pour a selection of works into a book: Graphic Design of Scheld?apen.00?Graphic Design of Scheld?apen? is the result of two years of collecting, three archival residencies at Het Bos (the new home of the still existing Scheld?apen organisation) and a short scanning residency at Frans Masereel Centrum.     Abstract: La coiffure et les poils humains, au même titre que les vêtements, les bijoux et les accessoires, participent depuis des siècles à la construction des apparences. À la frontière entre la mode et la représentation du corps, le sujet ne laisse personne indifférent. Dans la culture occidentale, le cheveu hirsute autant que l'excès de poils ont souvent été associés au diable, à l'animal et à l'homme sauvage. Si bien que pendant des siècles la femme et l'homme civilisés ont dû peigner, dompter et parfois même dissimuler leur toison. Parce que le poil est un matériau corporel qui peut être transformé de mille et une manières - étiré, coupé, complété, coloré, orné, caché ou exhibé -, il est un élément essentiel de la mise en scène de soi qui permet d'afficher l'adhésion à une mode, une conviction, une contestation et est porteur de nombreuses significations, telles la féminité, la virilité, la négligence, etc. Quelques noms de coiffures célèbres - à la Fontanges, à la Titus, à la garçonne, à l'iroquoise, etc. - révèlent que les cheveux sont eux aussi l'objet de véritables phénomènes de mode, porteurs de codes sociaux et culturels que les contemporains de chaque époque savent décrypter. De la fin du Moyen Âge à nos jours, ce livre aborde plusieurs thèmes inhérents à l'histoire de la coiffure (cheveux peignés, coupés, ornés ; perruques, postiches, calvitie ; coloration), sans oublier les questions liées à la pilosité faciale (visages imberbes, barbes, moustaches, sourcils) et à la pilosité corporelle (torse, jambes, pubis, aisselles, épilation). L'utilisation de cheveux pour réaliser des bijoux, la gloire des coiffeurs superstars ou encore l'emploi des cheveux dans la haute couture sont d'autres thèmes qui offriront au lecteur de nombreuses surprises

    Abstract: En 2004, à New York, 340 photographies datant du début des années 1960 sont retrouvées aux puces. Ces clichés d'amateurs révèlent un vaste réseau clandestin de travestis entre les Etats-Unis et le Canada. Susanna accueillait fréquemment des amis travestis dans sa propriété des Catskill. La photographie leur permet alors de conserver une trace de leur fille intérieure
