Dr. Uwe Hunger ist wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Institut für Politikwissenschaft der Universität Münster und Sprecher des Arbeitskreises 'Migrationspolitik' in der Deutschen Vereinigung für Politische Wissenschaft (DVPW). Dr. Kathrin Kissau ist Senior Researcher bei der Schweizer Stiftung für die Forschung in den Sozialwissenschaften (FORS) an der Universität Lausanne und arbeitet im Bereich Partizipations- und Onlineforschung.

    Abstract: In dieser Oldenburger Universitätsrede wird die erweiterte Fassung eines Vortrags veröffentlicht, den die Professoren Dr. Friedrich W. Busch und Dr. Wolf-Dieter Scholz, beide Oldenburger Erziehungs- und Familienwissenschaftler, gemeinsam im Rahmen der Veranstaltungen "Oldenburg Stadt der Wissenschaft 2009" gehalten haben. Bis zu ihrer Emeritierung waren sie Mitglieder der Carl von Ossietzky Unversität und Angehörige des Instituts für Pädagogik. In dem hier veröffentlichten Vortrag wird den Fragen nachgegangen, ob und wie sich die Einstellungen junger Menschen in Bezug auf Ehe, Familie, alternative Formen der Partnerschaft und im Hinblick auf die Bedeutung von Kindern für die Gesellschaft, für die eigene Lebensplanung geändert haben, welche Argumente für oder gegen eine Eheschließung und Familiengründung aus Sicht der Jugendlichen sprechen, welche Akzeptanz andere Lebensformen haben und wie sich junge Menschen das Verhältnis zwischen den Geschlechtern innerhalb von Partnerschaften mit und ohne Kinder vorstellen bzw. wünschen. 〈dt.〉

    Abstract: Forschung betreiben heißt heute vor allem: Projekte entwerfen, verwirklichen und abschließen. Die Erwartung, projektförmig zu handeln, ist quer zu allen Disziplinen zu einem Normalmodell in der Wissenschaft geworden, das selbst in der Wissenschaftsforschung kaum hinterfragt wird. Doch ist die Projektförmigkeit wirklich der inhärenten Logik des Forschungshandelns geschuldet? Oder gibt es andere Gründe für ihre große Verbreitung in der Forschung? Und welche Folgen hat es, wenn Forschung sich zunehmend projektförmig verfasst? Diesen Fragen geht der Autor mit einem historisch und theoretisch fundierten Konzept der Projektform als eigenständigem Typ sozialer Strukturbildung nach. In detaillierten Fallstudien aus dem Bereich der technischen, empirischen und theoretischen Forschung wird gezeigt, dass das Arbeiten in Projekten nicht die natürliche Erscheinungsform der Forschung ist und deshalb in der Forschungspraxis zu Irritationen führt. Ihre Allgegenwärtigkeit und Selbstverständlichkeit erhält die Projektform vielmehr dadurch, dass sie eine gesellschaftlich hoch anschlussfähige, institutionell abgestützte operative Struktur ist. Erst unter dieser Voraussetzung konnte sie sich zu einem eigenständigen Typus sozialer Strukturbildung entwickeln. Das Werk wurde mit dem von der Gesellschaft für Hochschulforschung verliehenen Ulrich-Teichler-Preis 2010 für herausragende Dissertationen in der Hochschulforschung ausgezeichnet

    Abstract: Wissenschaftler sehen sich zunehmend mit der Erwartung konfrontiert, außerhalb der Wissenschaft sichtbar zu sein. Am Fall der Humangenomforschung, deren Sequenzen und Stars in den vergangenen Jahren hohe Medienaufmerksamkeit zuteil wurde, zeigt die Studie, wie diese Sichtbarkeit Wissenschaft und Wissenschaftler verändert. Anhand von Interviews mit 55 Humangenomforschern in Deutschland, Großbritannien, Frankreich und den USA zeichnet die Autorin die Ambivalenz von Wissenschaftlern den Erwartungen gegenüber nach, identifiziert Regeln angemessener Sichtbarkeit und analysiert die Bedeutung symbolischer Forschung. Das Ergebnis der Sichtbarkeitsfolgenabschätzung: Auch wenn sich eine Öffentlichkeitsorientierung unter Wissenschaftlern findet, bestehen sie dennoch auf dem Primat epistemischer Kriterien für ihre Forschung. Als Geeks, Missionare, Anwälte des Wissens und öffentliche Wissenschaftler entwickeln sie typspezifische Strategien, außerwissenschaftliche Öffentlichkeiten als Publika der Wissenschaft einzubeziehen, ohne dass die Prominenz einzelner Wissenschaftler die Reputationsautonomie der Fachkollegen bedroht. Damit belegt der Fall Humangenomforschung die anhaltende normative Stabilität der Differenzierungsthese

    Abstract: Convergence Media History explores the ways that digital convergence has radically changed the field of media history. Writing media history is no longer a matter of charting the historical development of an individual medium such as film or television. Instead, now that various media from blockbuster films to everyday computer use intersect regularly via convergence, scholars must find new ways to write media history across multiple media formats. This collection of eighteen new essays by leading media historians and scholars examines the issues today in writing media history and histories. Each essay addresses a single medium-including film, television, advertising, sound recording, new media, and more-and connects that specific medium's history to larger issues for the field in writing multi-media or convergent histories.     Abstract: Publisher description: "Societies around the world have experienced a flood of information from diverse channels originating beyond local communities and even national borders, transmitted through the rapid expansion of cosmopolitan communications. For more than half a century conventional interpretations, [the authors] argue, have commonly exaggerated the potential threats arising from this process. A series of firewalls protects national cultures. This book develops a new theoretical framework for understanding cosmopolitan communications and uses it to identify the conditions under which global communications are most likely to endanger cultural diversity. The authors examine empirical evidence at both the societal level and the individual level, examining the outlook and beliefs of people in a wide range of societies.     Abstract: This study makes an original contribution to scholarship by tracking and evaluating the significance of the various individuals and (particularly) institutions responsible for the traffic of ideas both between Spain and the outside world, and also within Madrid and the interior. This has not been attempted before, and it is a necessary supplement to the usual focus on individual authors and texts, allowing us to appreciate the importance of setting the latter in the context of the circuits of knowledge functioning in Spain in their time. It looks in breadth and in detail at the nature of Spain's cultural and intellectual exchanges with Europe in the early decades of the twentieth century. Three features make it original in its approach. It focuses on a broad range of institutions, including publishing houses and journals, as 'centres of exchange', and looks at how they promoted and facilitated Spain's contact with Europe. The second feature is that it foregrounds the idea of 'cultural imaginaries' as the driving force behind Spain's exchanges with Europe. Thirdly, in terms of territory, it departs from a Franco/German-centred concept of Europe, paying particular attention to a Europe of the margins, in the form of England and Russia, as two countries that held particular attractions for the Spanish mind.     Abstract: This book explores a virtually untapped, yet fascinating research area: television dialogue. It reports on a study comparing the language of the American situation comedy Friends to natural conversation. Transcripts of the television show and the American English conversation portion of the Longman Grammar Corpus provide the data for this corpus-based investigation, which combines Douglas Biber's multidimensional methodology with a frequency-based analysis of close to 100 linguistic features. As a natural offshoot of the research design, this study offers a comprehensive description of the most common linguistic features characterizing natural conversation. Illustrated with numerous dialogue extracts from Friends and conversation, topics such as vague, emotional, and informal language are discussed. This book will be an important resource not only for researchers and students specializing in discourse analysis, register variation, and corpus linguistics, but also anyone interested in conversational language and television dialogue.

    Abstract: This is an innovative interdisciplinary book about objects and people within museums and galleries. It addresses fundamental issues of human sensory, emotional and aesthetic experience of objects. The chapters explore ways and contexts in which things and people mutually interact, and raise questions about how objects carry meaning and feeling, the distinctions between objects and persons, particular qualities of the museum as context for person-object engagements, and the active and embodied role of the museum visitor. Museum Materialities is divided into three sections - Objects, Engagements and Interpretations - and includes a foreword by Susan Pearce and an afterword by Howard Morphy. It examines materiality and other perceptual and ontological qualities of objects themselves; embodied sensory and cognitive engagements - both personal and across a wider audience spread - with particular objects or object types in a museum or gallery setting; notions of aesthetics, affect and wellbeing in museum contexts; and creative and innovative artistic and museum practices that seek to illuminate or critique museum objects and interpretations. Phenomenological and other approaches to embodied experience in an emphatically material world are current in a number of academic areas, most particularly strands of material culture studies within anthropology and cognate disciplines. Thus far, however, there has been no concerted application of this kind of approach to museum collections and interactions with them by museum visitors, curators, artists and researchers. Bringing together essays by scholars and practitioners from a wide disciplinary and international base, Museum Materialities seeks to make just such a contribution. In so doing it makes a valuable and original addition to the literature of both material culture studies and museum studies.

    Abstract: In this pathbreaking study, Amal Jamal analyzes the consumption of media by Arab citizens of Israel as a type of communicative behavior and a form of political action. Drawing on extensive public opinion survey data, he describes perceptions and use of media ranging from Arabic Israeli newspapers to satellite television broadcasts from throughout the Middle East. By participating in this semi-autonomous Arab public sphere, the average Arab citizen can connect with a wider Arab world beyond the boundaries of the Israeli state. Jamal shows how media aid the community's ability to resist the state's domination, protect its Palestinian national identity, and promote its civic status.

    Abstract: Scholars in the field of communication research have extensively studied television viewing in general and watching television news in particular. The book looks at the subject from an integrative theoretical perspective. Based on Schutzean sociology and action theoretical approaches to media use, the author argues that immediate social influences and other everyday life situations largely determine television use, and that the influence of short-term situational characteristics are often overlooked in person-centered explanatory models. In three empirical studies, the role of short-term situations and the influence of immediate social surroundings is analyzed. The use of Discrete Time Event History Analysis is an innovative way to look at household diary data. Findings reveal how family members influence each other in many ways. Watching television turns out to be an integral part of everyday life in the family, but also a force that may reduce family interaction. It is shown that television may serve as a surrogate for those family members that are not present, and that family members while present at home follow each others example. Partners are shown to mimic each other, children to mimic their parents, and parents follow the example set by their children. Television news viewing, in contrast to general television viewing is less determined by the immediate influence of others. Also, the individual motivations for news viewing vary throughout the day. First exposure to television news appears to be motivated by other factors than subsequent exposure. A need for 'surveillance' dominates first exposure, but subsequent exposure appears to be governed by other, more 'ritualistic' motivations. The book is important to scholars, graduate-level students and practitioners who are concerned with theoretical and methodological insights in the phenomenon of television viewing in everyday life.

But are they morally different from other people? The Scientific Life is historian Steven Shapin's story about who scientists are, who we think they are, and why our sensibilities about such things matter. Conventional wisdom has long held that scientists are neither better nor worse than anyone else, that personal virtue does not necessarily accompany technical expertise, and that scientific practice is profoundly impersonal. Shapin, however, here shows how the uncertainties attending scientific research make the virtues of individual researchers intrinsic to scientific work.     Abstract: Vom 19. Jahrhundert als einer Mediengesellschaft zu sprechen, erscheint als ein Anachronismus. Der Begriff sucht den Bedeutungsgewinn und die Diversifizierung der Medien in der Gegenwart zu erfassen und damit nicht zuletzt heutige von früheren Gesellschaften abzugrenzen. Die Annahme, dass Medien in früheren Gesellschaften nicht ebenfalls eine zentrale und spezifische Rolle zukam, wäre jedoch irrig. So war das 19. Jahrhundert nicht nur vom Aufstieg einer Vielzahl einstmals neuer Medien geprägt, sondern auch dadurch, dass sich die Gesellschaft über öffentliche und mediale Kommunikation erst konstituierte und ausdifferenzierte. Der Band macht es sich zur Aufgabe, ineinander greifende zentrale mediale und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen für Deutschland und für Frankreich in einer übergreifenden wie vergleichenden Perspektive vorzustellen..

    Abstract: Populäre Bilder von Wissenschaft werden von Druck- und elektronischen Medien verbreitet. Sie gehören zum Alltagswissen. Wo kommen sie her und wie werden sie gemacht? Die Beiträge setzen infolge an einer Fragestellung an, die für Musikwissenschaft und Medien-/Kulturwissenschaft gleichermaßen von besonderem Interesse ist: Welches sind die Bedeutungspotentiale, die ein populäres Musikstück innerhalb seiner audiovisuellen Rahmung entfaltet? Der erste Teil des Buches widmet sich der Einbettung des Konzeptes in die europäische Bildungspolitik sowie den entwickelten Verfahren.     Abstract: Aus dem Beruf ins Studium - ein Weg, dessen Gestaltung erfordert, studiengangsrelevante Kompetenzen aus der beruflichen Bildung und dem Erwerbsleben auf Hochschulstudiengänge anzurechnen.     Abstract: Everyone knows the thrill of being transported by a film, but what is it that makes movie watching such a compelling emotional experience? In Moving Viewers, Carl Plantinga explores this question and the implications of its answer for aesthetics, the psychology of spectatorship, and the place of movies in culture. Through an in-depth discussion of mainstream Hollywood films, Plantinga investigates what he terms "the paradox of negative emotion" and the function of mainstream narratives as ritualistic fantasies. He describes the sensual nature of the movies and shows how film emotions are often elicited for rhetorical purposes. He uses cognitive science and philosophical aesthetics to demonstrate why cinema may deliver a similar emotional charge for diverse audiences.
