    Abstract: "Van Dijk presents a new theory of context that explains how text and talk are adapted to their social environment. He argues that instead of the usual direct relationship being established between society and discourse, this influence is indirect and depends on how language users themselves 'define' the communicative situation. The new concept van Dijk introduces for such definitions is that of context models. These models control all language production and understanding and explain how discourse is made appropriate in each situation. They are the missing link between language and society so far ignored in pragmatics and sociolinguistics. In this interdisciplinary book, the new theory of context is developed by examining the analysis of the structure of social situations in social psychology and sociology and their cultural variation in anthropology. The theory is applied to the domain of politics, including the debate about the war in Iraq, where political leaders' speeches serve as a case study for detailed contextual analysis."--Jacket

    Abstract: The way in which people address one another is crucial to expressing social relationships and is closely linked with cultural values. In English we call some people by their first names, and others 'Mr' or 'Ms', followed by their surname. In some other languages there are different ways of saying 'you' depending on the degree of social distance. Exploring practices in the family, school, university, the workplace and in letters, this book reveals patterns in the varied ways people choose to address one another, from pronouns to first names, from honorifics to titles and last names. Examples are taken from contemporary English, French, German and Swedish, using rich data from focus group research, interviews, chat groups, and participant observation

    Abstract: Repräsentative empirische Studien über Ausländer sind selten. Vor diesem Hintergrund liefert die Untersuchung von Claudio Caballero auf Basis der Mainzer Ausländerstudie mit fast 1800 Befragten wertvolle Erkenntnisse über Integrationsformen und grundlegende politische Einstellungen von in Deutschland lebenden Ausländern. Die Befürwortung demokratischer Prinzipien sowie die Akzeptanz politischer Institutionen und Akteure konstituieren die Unterstützung des politischen Systems. Der Autor zeigt, dass ein zwar differenzierter, aber dennoch klar positiver Zusammenhang zwischen gesellschaftlicher Integration und politischer Unterstützung besteht. Hier aufgewachsene Ausländer können prinzipiell einen ähnlichen Sozialisationsprozess wie deutsche Staatsbürger durchlaufen, was die Herausbildung eines vergleichbaren, systemstabilisierenden Sets an Grundeinstellungen wahrscheinlich werden lässt. Hingegen können Ausländer als Folge von Integrationsdefiziten negative Einstellungen gegenüber dem politischen System aufweisen. Der Integrationsförderung kommt insofern eine entscheidende Bedeutung zu, als sie langfristig zur Entwicklung von politischer Unterstützung und somit zur Stabilisierung des politischen Systems beiträgt.

    Abstract: Society consists of numerous interconnected, interacting, and interdependent groups, which differ in power and status. The consequences of belonging to a more powerful, higher-status 'majority' versus a less powerful, lower-status 'minority' can be profound, and the tensions that arise between these groups are the root of society's most difficult problems. To understand the origins of these problems and develop solutions for them, it is necessary to understand the dynamics of majority-minority relations. This volume brings together leading scholars in the fields of stigma, prejudice and discrimination, minority influence, and intergroup relations to provide diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives on what it means to be a minority. The volume, which focuses on the strategies that minorities use in coping with majorities, is organized into three sections: 'Coping with Exclusion: Being Excluded for Who You Are'; 'Coping with Exclusion: Being Excluded for What You Think and Do'; and 'Coping with Inclusion'

    Abstract: Language policy is all about choices. If you are bilingual or plurilingual, you have to choose which language to use. Even if you speak only one language, you have choices of dialects and styles. Some of these choices are the result of management, reflecting conscious and explicit efforts by language managers to control the choices. This book presents a specific theory of language management. Bernard Spolsky reviews research on the family, religion, the workplace, the media, schools, legal and health institutions, the military and government. Also discussed are language activists, international organisations, and human rights relative to language, and the book concludes with a review of language managers and management agencies. A model is developed that recognises the complexity of language management, makes sense of the various forces involved, and clarifies why it is such a difficult enterprise

    Abstract: In the first full-length scholarly study of the increasingly important phenomenon of digital diasporas, Jennifer M. Brinkerhoff examines how immigrants who still feel a connection to their country of origin use the internet. She argues that digital diasporas can ease security concerns in both the homeland and the host society, improve diaspora members' quality of life in the host society, and contribute to socio-economic development in the homeland. Drawing on case studies of nine digital diaspora organizations, Brinkerhoff's research supplies new empirical material regarding digital diasporas and their potential security and development impacts. She also explores their impact on identity negotiation, arguing that digital diasporas create communities and organizations that represent hybrid identities and encourage solidarity, identity, and material benefits among their members. The book also explores these communities' implications for policy and practice

    Abstract: How do we construct national identities in discourse? Which topics, which discursive strategies and which linguistic devices are employed to construct national sameness and uniqueness on the one hand, and differences to other national collectives on the other hand? The Discursive Construction of National Identity analyses discourses of national identity in Europe with particular attention to Austria. In the tradition of critical discourse analysis, the authors analyse current and on-going transformations in the self-and other definition of national identities using an innovative interdisciplinary approach which combines discourse-historical theory and methodology and political science perspectives. Thus, the rhetorical promotion of national identification and the discursive construction and reproduction of national difference on public, semi-public and semi-private levels within a nation state are analysed in much detail and illustrated with a huge amount of examples taken from many genres (speeches, focus-groups, interviews, media, and so forth). In addition to the critical discourse analysis of multiple genres accompanying various commemorative and celebratory events in 1995, this extended and revised edition is able to draw comparisons with similar events in 2005. The impact of socio-political changes in Austria and in the European Union is also made transparent in the attempts of constructing hegemonic national identities.     Abstract: Die Straße, der wohl heterogenste und handlungsreichste Raum unserer Gesellschaft, ist im Unterschied zum Privatraum ein Raum der Öffentlichkeit, der von jedem Bürger betreten, beeinflusst und auf diese Weise mitgestaltet werden kann. Um diese räumliche Handlungs- und Wirkungsvielfalt textuell abbilden zu können, nehmen alle Beiträge in diesem Band die Straße aus einem anderen Fokus unter die Lupe. An der Schnittstelle von wissenschaftlicher Theorie und projektorientierter Praxis entsteht so aus der Verbindung ethnographischer, soziologischer, künstlerischer, medialer, wirtschaftlicher, politischer, architektonischer, geographischer, sport-, kultur- und kommunikationswissenschaftlicher Sichten ein bislang unikales Spektrum an Zugangsweisen zum städtischen Straßenraum, das zeigen kann, an welchen Stellen und über welche Wege die Straße 'gelesen' und 'beschrieben' werden kann.

If we assert that no person stands above the rest, can we encourage and acknowledge athletic, artistic, and intellectual achievements? Perhaps equality should merely mean equality of opportunity. But then how can society reconcile inherent differences between men and women, the strong and the weak, the able-bodied and the disabled? In The Playing Fields of Eton, Mika LaVaque-Manty addresses questions which have troubled philosophers, reformers, and thoughtful citizens for more than two centuries. Drawing examples from the 18th century debate over dueling as a gentleman's prerogative to recent controversies over athletes' use of performance enhancing drugs, LaVaque-Manty shows that societies have repeatedly redefined equality and excellence. One constant, however, remains: sports provide an arena for working out tensions between these two ideals. He concludes that, just as in sports where athletes are sorted by age, sex, and professional status, in modern democratic society excellence has meaning only in the context of comparison among individuals who are, theoretically, equals. LaVaque-Manty's argument will engage philosophers, yet his inviting prose style and use of familiar illustrations will welcome non-philosophers to join the conversation.
