    Abstract: This interdisciplinary volume explores the relationship between history and a range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences: economics, political science, political theory, international relations, sociology, philosophy, law, literature and anthropology. The relevance of historical approaches within these disciplines has shifted over the centuries. Many of them, like law and economics, originally depended on self-consciously historical procedures. These included the marshalling of evidence from past experience, philological techniques and source criticism. Between the late nineteenth and the middle of the twentieth century, the influence of new methods of research, many indebted to models favoured by the natural sciences, such as statistical, analytical or empirical approaches, secured an expanding intellectual authority while the hegemony of historical methods declined in relative terms. In the aftermath of this change, the essays collected in History in the Humanities and Social Sciences reflect from a variety of angles on the relevance of historical concerns to representative disciplines as they are configured today

    Abstract: "There was a time, not so long ago, when marriage turned women into aliens in their own country. For the simple act of marrying a foreign man their citizenship was stripped from them. Often it was replaced with another, although sometimes with none at all. This history is little known, and the laws that performed its strange alchemy are even less understood. The story's end lies in the United Nations Convention on the Nationality of Married Women. The Convention, adopted in 1957 and entered into force in 1958, is, undeniably, one of the lesser known of the international rights-bearing treaties, overshadowed by the mighty UN Conventions that were ratified in the following decades, giving expression to the rights of disadvantaged groups and peoples, including women. Yet, in its day, the 1957 Convention was a great milestone in the protection of rights. It addressed a century-old (or older) practice that had caused hardship in the lives of countless individuals and at the heart of which lay what we recognize today as a profound denial of rights"--

But between the nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, virtually every country in the world adopted laws that stripped citizenship from women who married foreign men. Despite the resulting hardships and even statelessness experienced by married women, it took until 1957 for the international community to condemn the practice, with the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Nationality of Married Women. Citizenship, Alienage, and the Modern Constitutional State tells the important yet neglected story of marital denaturalization from a comparative perspective. Examining denaturalization laws and their impact on women around the world, with a focus on Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United States, it advances a concept of citizenship as profoundly personal and existential.     Abstract: "Attachment between an infant and his or her parents is a major topic within developmental psychology. An increasing number of psychologists, evolutionary biologists and anthropologists are articulating their doubts that attachment theory in its present form is applicable worldwide, without, however, denying that the development of attachment is a universal need.     Abstract: "Attachment theory developed amidst the talented group of psychologists and clinicians who surrounded John Bowlby in London between the publication of his memorable report on maternal deprivation for the World Health Organization (Maternal care and mental health) in 1951 (a more popular version was published by Pelican as Child care and the growth of love in 1953) and the publication of his article on "The nature of the child's tie to his mother" in 1958. As subsequently elaborated in the trilogy Bowlby published between 1969 and 1980, attachment theory represented a synthesis of the available clinical evidence, sensitive observations of young children experiencing stressful separations, and comparative experimental research by scientists such as Harry Harlow, a psychologist, and Robert Hinde, a behavioral biologist, all viewed in the context of the integrative control systems theory view then emerging.     Abstract: The path adolescents take from childhood to adulthood is a product of social, economic, political, and technological forces. These forces may facilitate youth's preparation to become healthy adults, or they may leave youth unprepared for adulthood. Knowledgeable projections are vital in shaping the agenda for research; for alerting educators, policy makers, and practitioners to new issues; and for formulating thoughtful responses to emerging dilemmas. This book focuses upon the future of adolescence in postindustrial societies. The authors identify some ominous societal changes that will affect youth: unstable job markets, competition for public resources due to an aging population, and widening income gaps between 'information workers' and low-skill workers. But they also observe opportunities created by information technology, innovations in health service delivery and criminal-justice rehabilitation, and the resourcefulness of a new generation. This volume examines these and other macro-structural changes that will impact adolescents' lives and their futures as adults.
