    Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Canadian Cinema offers an overview of the current state of thinking around Canadian cinema. The volume was conceived to register the variety of voices expressing themselves within Canadian cinema with special attention paid to Indigenous, Quebecois, and diasporic identities. Canadian cinema increasingly finds its place within a broad conception of "screen cultures", which extend into the divergent realms of small-scale artistic experimentation and large-scale public spectacle. Insofar as these realms have played a vital role in establishing Canada's presence within international screen culture, they are given special emphasis here. Rather than a straight historical account of cinema in Canada, this Oxford Handbook looks at the technological complexes, geographical spaces, and identity formations in which that cinema has emerged and developed.

Von diesen Beispielen können wir für unsere eigenen Herausforderungen auf unterschiedlichste Weise profitieren: zum einen in methodischer Hinsicht, stellen sie doch höchste Anforderungen an die Mobilisierung von Selbsthilfekräften und die Beteiligung von Bewohnerinnen und Bewohnern, wenn sie überhaupt ernsthaft an einer schrittweisen Aufwertung interessiert sind; zum anderen hinsichtlich des Umgangs mit den Einflüssen des globalen und lokalen Immobilienkapitals, das auf eine maximale Verwertung insbesondere von günstig gelegenen Lagen mit Quartieren geringer Dichte und immobilienwirtschaftliche Erträge abzielt und dabei nicht selten die Lebensbedingungen der ärmsten Städter fundamental in Frage stellt.     Abstract: Deutschland und Frankreich benötigen stetige Metallimporte, um ihr Wirtschaftsmodell aufrechtzuerhalten. Internationale Kooperation ist unerlässlich, damit diese Importe zuverlässig und nachhaltig verlaufen. Doch welche Potenziale bieten sich in diesem Bereich, welche Grenzen sind dabei zu erkennen? Dieser Frage geht Yann Wernert durch einen Fallstudienvergleich mit prozessanalytischen Methoden und auf der theoretischen Grundlage des neoliberalen Institutionalismus nach. Er zeigt, dass beide Länder ihre Bemühungen als reaktive Mittelmächte gestalten. Sie wollen durch staatliche Rohstoffstrategien wirtschaftliche, strategische und Nachhaltigkeitsziele erreichen. Während die Analyse durchaus Kooperationspotenziale ausmacht, fallen diese je nach Ländergruppe und Politikbereich sehr unterschiedlich aus.     Abstract: Das MARKK (ehemals Hamburger Völkerkundemuseum) zeigt seit dem 12. September 2018 eine Auswahl der ersten Dinge, die vor 150 Jahren in den Verzeichnissen des Museums erfasst wurden. Die Exponate lassen auch Rückschlüsse auf Hamburgs Stadtgeschichte zu. Immerhin 150 Jahre ist es her, dass das Museum für Völkerkunde die ersten Objekte in einem Verzeichnis erfasste. Seitdem sind viele Exponate hinzugekommen. In der Ausstellung "Erste Dinge" widmet sich das Museum nun wieder jenen Dingen, die zu allerst in die Sammlung aufgenommen wurden. Die Ausstellung ist somit eine Rückbesinnung auf die Anfänge der Museumsgeschichte und lässt gleichzeitig Rückschlüsse auf die Hamburger Stadtgeschichte zu. Viele der frühen Objekte wurden dem Museum geschenkt. Die Gegenstände kamen über den Seeweg nach Hamburg und sollten einen Eindruck von anderen Kulturen und deren Lebensweisen und Traditionen vermitteln. Unter den Objekten sind beispielsweise handgeschnitzte Figuren aus Afrika, Buddha Statuen aus Myanmar oder ein chinesisches Schiffsmodell. Hamburgs Entwicklung hin zu einer einflussreichen Handelsstadt spielte beim ethnografischen Sammeln eine wichtige Rolle. Die Frage nach der Verantwortung der Hansestadt im kolonialen Welthandel wird durch die Ausstellung der Objekte auch kritisch hinterfragt.

    Abstract: Brazil constitutes a globally vital but troubled economy. It accounts for the largest GDP in Latin America and ranks among the world's largest exporters of critical commodities including iron ore, soya, coffee, and beef. In recent years Brazil's global economic importance has been magnified by a surge in both outward and inward foreign direct investment. This has served to further internationalize what has been historically a relatively closed economy. The purpose of this Handbook is to offer real insight into the Brazil's economic development in contemporary context, understanding its most salient characteristics and analyzing its structural features across various dimensions.

    Abstract: "The 2013 collapse of Rana Plaza, an eight-story garment factory in Savar, Bangladesh, killed over a thousand workers and injured hundreds more. This disaster exposed the brutal labor conditions of the global garment industry and revealed its failures as a competitive and self-regulating industry. Over the past thirty years, corporations have widely adopted labor codes on health and safety, yet too often in their working lives, garment workers across the globe encounter death, work-related injuries, and unhealthy factory environments. Disasters such as Rana Plaza notwithstanding, garment workers routinely work under conditions that not only escape public notice but also undermine workers' long-term physical health, mental well-being, and the very sustainability of their employment.
    Abstract: Unmaking the Global Sweatshop gathers the work of leading anthropologists and ethnographers studying the global garment industry to examine the relationship between the politics of labor and initiatives to protect workers' health and safety. Contributors analyze both the labor processes required of garment workers as well as the global dynamics of outsourcing and subcontracting that produce such demands on workers' health. The accounts contained in Unmaking the Global Sweatshop trace the histories of labor standards for garment workers in the global South; explore recent partnerships between corporate, state, and civil society actors in pursuit of accountable corporate governance; analyze a breadth of initiatives that seek to improve workers' health standards, from ethical trade projects to human rights movements; and focus on the ways in which risk, health, and safety might be differently conceptualized and regulated.

    Abstract: This book explores the history of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and its place within capitalist development. Since 1948, the OECD and its forerunner, the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) worked on almost every subject of interest to national governments ranging from economic growth to education (PISA rankings), statistics, to the environment. With varying success the OEEC/OECD thus played a key role as a warden of the West and of capitalist development. However, it has remained one of the least understood international organizations. Bringing together a number of case studies by scholars from around the world, this first source-based volume on the history of the OEEC/OECD in global governance offers not only a new understanding of the Organization’s key areas of activities, but also its multiple relations to member states, other international organizations, and private networks. The volume thus critically re-examines postwar international history, most importantly decolonization and the Cold War, through the prism of one international organization in its various contexts.

    Abstract: An account of all the new and surprising evidence now available for the beginnings of the earliest civilizations that contradict the standard narrative. Why did humans abandon hunting and gathering for sedentary communities dependent on livestock and cereal grains, and governed by precursors of today's states? Most people believe that plant and animal domestication allowed humans, finally, to settle down and form agricultural villages, towns, and states, which made possible civilization, law, public order, and a presumably secure way of living. But archaeological and historical evidence challenges this narrative. The first agrarian states, says James C. Scott, were born of accumulations of domestications: first fire, then plants, livestock, subjects of the state, captives, and finally women in the patriarchal family-all of which can be viewed as a way of gaining control over reproduction. Scott explores why we avoided sedentism and plow agriculture, the advantages of mobile subsistence, the unforeseeable disease epidemics arising from crowding plants, animals, and grain, and why all early states are based on millets and cereal grains and unfree labor. He also discusses the "barbarians" who long evaded state control, as a way of understanding continuing tension between states and nonsubject peoples

    Abstract: The financial crisis of 2008 aroused widespread interest in banking and financial history. In an attempt to better understand the magnitude of the shock, there was a demand for historical parallels. This volume provides the material for such a reflection by presenting the state of the art in banking and financial history. Contributions to this volume analyse banking and financial history in a long-term comparative perspective. Lessons drawn from these analyses may well help future generations of policy makers avoid a repeat of the financial turbulence that erupted in 2008.

Many regarded the term as too broad, holistic and vague or too value-loaded, ideological and polemic. This volume brings together leading scholars to explore why the term has recently experienced a comeback and assess how useful the term can be in application to social and economic history. The contributors discuss whether and how the history of capitalism enables us to ask new questions, further explore unexhausted sources and discover new connections between previously unrelated phenomena.     Abstract: Die moderne Philologie war lange eine 'Leitwissenschaft', die gesellschaftlich relevante Aussagen über den Menschen traf. Früher als naturgeschichtliche Ansätze konnte sie den menschlichen 'Geist' aus den Sprachen, Zeichensystemen und Textarchiven der Welt aufschlüsseln. Als Europa zur Weltmacht aufstieg, lag der erkenntnistheoretische Beitrag der Philologie zur Rassenanthropologie in der Vermengung von Sprach- und Schriftstrukturen, Formprinzipien und Gattungsfragen mit vermeintlichen kognitiven Potentialen von Sprechern und Schreibern. Zugleich haben Philologen so gewonnene Annahmen einer Kritik unterzogen, die sie aus der philologischen Hermeneutik und Methodik selbst entfalteten. Anhand philologischer Konzeptionen von Denkern wie Friedrich Schlegel, G. W. F. Hegel, Michele Amari, Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat oder Ernest Renan arbeitet die Studie die Reflexion dieser umkämpften Wissensbestände systematisch auf. Hieraus lassen sich Anhaltspunkte für eine zukunftsfähige Philologie gewinnen, die sich heute mit naturalistischen Diskursen über den Menschen ebenso auseinandersetzen muss wie mit dem Erbe des europäischen Universalismus und der politischen Überhöhung kultureller Differenz.

    Abstract: The evolution of modern capitalist society is increasingly being marked by an undeniable and consistent tension between pure economic and ethical ways of valuing and acting. This book is a collaborative and cross-disciplinary contribution that challenges the assumptions of capitalist business and society. It ultimately reflects on how to restore benevolence, collaboration, wisdom and various forms of virtuous deliberation amongst all those who take part in the common good, drawing inspiration from European history and continental philosophical traditions on virtue. Editors Kleio Akrivou and Alejo José G. Sison unite well-known academics who examine new ways of understanding the relations between social classes, organizations, groups and the role of actors-persons. They propose ways to restore virtue in our economy-society-person relations with the purpose of overcoming the current challenges of capitalism which more often than not sacrifice happiness and broader, sustained prosperity for the achievement of short-term efficiency. This book also explores a moral psychology that underpins normative virtue ethics theory, and seeks a deeper understanding on how the concept of prudence and the distinct forms of rational excellence have evolved since Aristotle and the co-evolution of Western-Aristotelian and Eastern virtue ethics traditions.     Abstract: This book considers the relationship between public spending and public deficit and the varying successes and difficulties governments have had in recent years to balance the two. As the fiscal crash of 2007/8 turned into the Great Recession and tax revenues tumbled, public finances across the UK, the USA and Europe plunged into deficit. Controversial attempts by governments to balance their budgets, commonly described as austerity by critics, had mixed success, politically and economically. Michael Burton outlines how politicians tackled the worst economic downturn in over half a century, drawing on previous examples of deficit-reduction to see how governments managed public finances in recessions and where austerity worked and where it failed. This two-part book, which for the first time provides an historical context to austerity, analyses firstly deficit-reduction in the UK in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2010-2016, and then looks at case studies in Europe, the USA, Canada and Asia Pacific. The author concludes that with the ageing population placing greater pressure through health and pensions on the public finances of the developed world, politicians and their electorates will have to learn to live long-term with austerity

Anhänger und Verehrer, die er ausgebildet, promoviert, habilitiert hatte, hielten an ihrem Ideal fest. 2013 schaffte die Deutsche Vereinigung für Politische Wissenschaft den nach ihm benannten Lebenswerk-Preis trotzdem ab. Dieser Band enthält Faksimiles der archivalischen Belege. Er dokumentiert und kommentiert die Kontroverse und ordnet sie ein in die aktuellen Debatten um Zeithistoriker und spätere Politologen im „Dritten Reich“. Gleichzeitig treibt der Kommentar Rainer Eisfelds die Forschung über Eschenburg weiter voran durch Auswertung bislang nicht oder nur teilweise genutzter Archivbestände.     Abstract: Das gedruckte Buch galt lange Zeit unangefochten als das wichtigste Organ geisteswissenschaftlicher Forschung. Doch in den letzten Jahren ist ein ganzes Gefüge von Medien, Werten und Praktiken in Bewegung geraten. Mit den Möglichkeiten digitaler Forschung und Kommunikation sowie Forderungen nach einer Standardisierung von Publikationen wirkt das Schreiben und Drucken von Büchern bisweilen fast wie ein Anachronismus mit begrenzter Lebensdauer. Die Kritik am gedruckten Buch offenbart ein Stück Kulturkritik, die ihr Unbehagen an der Gegenwart mit einer übertriebenen Erwartung an die technischen Möglichkeiten des Digitalen verbindet. Anstatt die unterschiedlichen Stärken von Papier und Digitalisat hervorzuheben und zu fragen, wo mögliche Synergien liegen könnten, wird ein rivalisierender Gegensatz zwischen beiden postuliert, der eine Entscheidung verlangt. „So ist zuletzt die Einheit aller Gefahrenquellen für das Buch bei Hagner die Ungeduld, das Bedürfnis im Zweifel lieber gleich als durchdacht unterrichtet zu werden, Antworten nur auf gestellte Fragen zu bekommen, sich leicht umentscheiden zu können, lieber kurz, oft, vorläufig und direkt als ausführlich, selten, witterungsfest und umwegreich zu kommunizieren. Jeder dieser Gefahren entspricht ein nachvollziehbarer Wunsch. Seine Erfüllung findet er in anderen Formaten. Aber jeder strikten Verfolgung dieser Wünsche entgeht auch etwas. Bücher, resümiert Hagner, sind im besten Fall etwas Ganzes, das sich entwickelt. Das unterscheidet sie von Informationen“ (FAZ)

    Abstract: Eurozone Dystopia traces the origin of the Eurozone and shows how the historical Franco-German rivalry combined with the growing dominance of neo-liberal economic thinking to create a monetary system that was deeply flawed and destined to fail. William Mitchell argues that the political class in Europe is trapped in a destructive groupthink. Based on a flawed understanding of macroeconomic fundamentals, groupthink extols the virtues of the erroneous concept of the self-regulating free market and prevents Europe from seeing its own policy failures. As a result, millions are unemployed, with imperilled member states caught in a cycle of persistent stagnation and rising social instability. Providing a detailed historical analysis of the evolution of the Eurozone and its failings from the 1940s to the present day, the book argues that the Eurozone lacks the necessary monetary architecture, particularly the existence of a federal fiscal function which could have resolved the economic crisis quickly. The author examines the options available to Europe and concludes that an orderly abandonment of the euro and a return to national currencies is the superior option available. The justification for this conclusion is exhaustively argued within a Modern Monetary Theory framework. This thoughtful and accessible account of Europe's economic woes will appeal to all those who are seeking an explanation for the crisis and are receptive to sensible and credible alternatives to the current scenario.

    Abstract: The book presents the outcomes of an innovative research programme in the history of science and implements a Text Act Theory which extends Speech Act Theory, in order to illustrate a new approach to texts and textual communicative acts. It examines assertives (absolute or conditional statements, forecasts, insurance, etc.), directives, declarations, and enumerations, as well as different types of textual units allowing authors to perform these acts: algorithms, recipes, prescriptions, lexical templates for terminological studies, and enumerative structures. The book relies on the study of a broad range of documents of the past dealing with various domains: mathematics, zoology, medicine, lexicography. The documents examined come from scholarly sources from different parts of the world, such as China, Europe, India, Mesopotamia, and are written in a variety of European languages as well as Chinese, Cuneiform, and Sanskrit. This approach proves fruitful in both history of science and Text Act Theory
