Abstract: The need for fast data applications is growing rapidly, driven by the IoT, the surge in machine-to-machine (M2M) data, global mobile device proliferation, and the monetization of SaaS platforms. So how do you combine real-time, streaming analytics with real-time decisions in an architecture that's reliable, scalable, and simple? In this O'Reilly report, Ryan Betts and John Hugg from VoltDB examine ways to develop apps for fast data, using pre-defined patterns. These patterns are general enough to suit both the do-it-yourself, hybrid batch/streaming approach, as well as the simpler, proven in-memory approach available with certain fast database offerings. Their goal is to create a collection of fast data app development recipes. We welcome your contributions, which will be tested and included in future editions of this report.

Abstract: The open source revolution continues, but it's not just about lines of code hosted in public online repositories. Today's open source, managed by open governance and collaborative foundations, is fueling a developer revolution across worldwide communities working to conquer the next computing challenge-the cloud. Proprietary clouds and cloud ecosystems are being superseded by open source collaborations across the industry, such as Docker, OpenStack, and Cloud Foundry. In this report, authors Philip Estes and Doug Davis present case studies to illustrate the current direction of collaboration and growth in the open cloud, and then they envision the next phase of collaboration-one that includes standardized interfaces for orchestration, cluster management, and distribution and deployment across multiple cloud infrastructure types, such as VMs and containers. With potential for new revenue streams, new offerings, and new niche vendors, the future of the open cloud is full of promise. If you're looking to be part of this "open by design" revolution, or plan to start a new collaborative project in the future, you'll benefit from the authors' examples and guidance.

Abstract: The rise of big data in recent years coincides with the economic and political rise of Asia, especially among the five countries that make up the bulk of the East Asian Internet-using population: China, Japan, Korea, India, and Indonesia. If you're thinking of entering the Asian market, this O'Reilly report provides an overview of the current state of big data and open data in these countries, and helps you examine whether the benefits of doing business with them outweigh the costs. While Japan and South Korea are highly developed countries with lofty Internet penetration rates, China, India, and Indonesia have enormous populations, relatively low Internet penetration, and enormous growth potential. But access to open data from fields such as healthcare, education, agriculture, transportation, energy, and finance-data vital for building businesses and services-varies from country to country. Each of them has a distinctive character reflecting its national priorities. To help you assess risk vs opportunity in the Asian market, author Franklin Lu reviews these five countries individually to reveal the nature of data privacy laws, open data initiatives, and existing businesses.

Abstract: The need to understand people lies at the core of any product design, and currently there are two standard ways to measure that understanding: big datasets and small research studies-aka "thick data." Most organizations favor big over thick, but in doing so they miss the larger picture. In this report, author Pamela Pavliscak outlines a way to use data of all kinds to understand the relationship between people and technology. Big data shows traces of interactions that people leave behind, but it doesn't reveal the whole story. By adding user stories, you can go beyond the "what" to discover why people behave as they do. Up until now, there hasn't been much information on how to combine quantitative big data with qualitative thick data. That's where this report can help. You'll learn: What to consider when using data to understand people Key differences between big data and small research studies Why organizations should combine big and thick data to understand human behavior, emotion, and language Which data sources or research methods work best in combination How to categorize and combine data effectively in metrics Methods for infusing design documents with data How to work across teams to understand customers This report is ideal for product designers and developers, data scientists, design researchers, and business strategists.

Abstract: This is a softcover version of the title released in 2011; there is no new material. The modern human animal spends upwards of 11 hours out of every 24 in a state of constant consumption. Not eating, but gorging on information ceaselessly spewed from the screens and speakers we hold dear. Just as we have grown morbidly obese on sugar, fat, and flour-so, too, have we become gluttons for texts, instant messages, emails, RSS feeds, downloads, videos, status updates, and tweets. We're all battling a storm of distractions, buffeted with notifications and tempted by tasty tidbits of information. And just as too much junk food can lead to obesity, too much junk information can lead to cluelessness. The Information Diet shows you how to thrive in this information glut-what to look for, what to avoid, and how to be selective. In the process, author Clay Johnson explains the role information has played throughout history, and why following his prescribed diet is essential for everyone who strives to be smart, productive, and sane. In The Information Diet , you will: Discover why eminent scholars are worried about our state of attention and general intelligence Examine how today's media-Big Info-give us exactly what we want: content that confirms our beliefs Learn to take steps to develop data literacy, attention fitness, and a healthy sense of humor Become engaged in the economics of information by learning how to reward good information providers Just like a normal, healthy food diet, The Information Diet is not about consuming less-it's about finding a healthy balance that works for you

Abstract: Companies of all sizes are considering data lakes as a way to deal with terabytes of security data that can help them conduct forensic investigations and serve as an early indicator to identify bad or relevant behavior. Many think about replacing their existing SIEM (security information and event management) systems with Hadoop running on commodity hardware. Before your company jumps into the deep end, you first need to weigh several critical factors. This O'Reilly report takes you through technological and design options for implementing a data lake. Each option not only supports your data analytics use cases, but is also accessible by processes, workflows, third-party tools, and teams across your organization. Within this report, you'll explore: Five questions to ask before choosing architecture for your backend data store How data lakes can overcome scalability and data duplication issues Different options for storing context and unstructured log data Data access use cases covering both search and analytical queries via SQL Processes necessary for ingesting data into a data lake, including parsing, enrichment, and aggregation Four methods for embedding your SIEM into a data lake

Abstract: It's difficult to ignore the effects of the "great unbundling" today. The digital revolution has already changed the nature of media, personal health, finance, and other economic and industrial sectors in recent years. As this O'Reilly report reveals, the modern workforce-including the very notion of a "job" itself-is undergoing a similar transformation. Unbundling is the breaking up of traditional packages of goods and services into their component parts, eventually to be rebundled in new ways. In the same fashion, various job components-income, structure, social connections, meaning, and (in the US) access to healthcare-are being unbundled as well. Authors Nick Grossman and Elizabeth Woyke explore how changes in the workplace bundle are drawing more and more people into the part-time labor force, aka the "gig economy," including traditional freelancers, craftspeople, independent contractors, micro-entrepreneurs, and shift workers. Gig workers now have access to many jobs from many sources, but they also face significant challenges in obtaining security in today's economy. This report describes how the gig economy is shaping up.

Abstract: Industrial design and app UI are the most visible elements of connected product design. But while they are important, they're only part of the picture. You could create a beautiful app and a stunning piece of hardware, and users could still have a poor experience if the system components don't work together coherently. In this report, UX and product consultant Claire Rowland introduces a framework for understanding the UX of consumer IoT products. Even quite simple connected products are conceptually more complex than non-connected ones. User Experience for the IoT explains different aspects of experience design for connected products and shows you how they fit together. Understand the differences between UI and interaction design-for embedded devices as well as apps Learn the key activities involved in designing the form of physical devices Design a coherent experience across the whole system through appropriate distribution of functionality, consistency across different UIs, and fluent cross-device interactions Tackle the UX impact of putting the quirks of the network into physical devices, such as latency, reliability, and intermittent connectivity Learn how device and service experience are inseparable for IoT products Craft a compelling value proposition to move your product from early adopters to the mass market Explore the UX challenges of interoperability and designing platforms for common-sense coordination between multiple connected products

These features may not work on all ebook readers. We organize things. We organize information, information about things, and information about information. Organizing is a fundamental issue in many professional fields, but these fields have only limited agreement in how they approach problems of organizing and in what they seek as their solutions. The Discipline of Organizing synthesizes insights from library science, information science, computer science, cognitive science, systems analysis, business, and other disciplines to create an Organizing System for understanding organizing. This framework is robust and forward-looking, enabling effective sharing of insights and design patterns between disciplines that weren't possible before. The Discipline of Organizing (Professional Edition) is enhanced by nearly 100 pictures and illustrations, with scores of sidebars that extend the discussion from the main text. The book is highly interactive, with links to cross-references, glossary definitions, and external citations. It contains 700 tagged endnotes that connect to one or more of the contributing disciplines, adding depth without distraction. The Discipline of Organizing was named an "Information Science Book of the Year" by the Association of Information Science and Technology in 2014, and as of mid-2015 was being used in nearly 60 schools--three times as many as the year before. The Professional Edition is ideal for practitioners and as a primary or supplemental text for graduate courses on information organization, content and knowledge management, information architecture, and digital collections. The third edition adds thousands of words of new content: Introducing values and ethics into discussions of why we organize Expanding treatment of information architecture, accessibility, and behavioral economics in interaction design Expanding treatment of "where we organize" to consider city planning, built environments, and wayfinding Addressing the unique challenges of organizing people, both in organizational contexts such as businesses, and as individuals via predictive analytics and other computational techniques Incorporating five new reader-contributed case studies that apply the Organizing System framework to earth-orbiting satelli...

Abstract: To discover the shape and structure of the big data market, the San Francisco-based startup Relato took a unique approach to market research and created the first fully data-driven market report. Company CEO Russell Jurney and his team collected and analyzed raw data from a variety of sources to reveal a boatload of business insights about the big data space. This exceptional report is now available for free download. Using data analytic techniques such as social network analysis (SNA), Relato exposed the vast and complex partnership network that exists among tens of thousands of unique big data vendors. The dataset Relato collected is centered around Cloudera, Hortonworks, and MapR, the major platform vendors of Hadoop, the primary force behind this market. From this snowball sample, a 2-hop network, the Relato team was able to answer several questions, including: Who are the major players in the big data market? Which is the leading Hadoop vendor? What sectors are included in this market and how do they relate? Which among the thousands of partnerships are most important? Who's doing business with whom? Metrics used in this report are also visible in Relato's interactive web application, via a link in the report, which walks you through the insights step-by-step.

Abstract: As remarkable as Docker containers are, they still need to be heavily scheduled and orchestrated to run efficiently, and seamlessly replaced and re-balanced when they fail. It's a big job, well beyond the abilities of Chef, Puppet, and similar tools. This O'Reilly report introduces you to Kubernetes, a cluster management system from Google that's capable of scheduling and launching roughly 7,000 containers a second . Dave Rensin, who directs Global Cloud Support and Services at Google, explains piece-by-piece how this system works. If you've created at least one simple container with Docker, you'll understand how to get started with Kubernetes by using one of several options. Examine pods, a collection of containers bundled and scheduled together Run through volumes, the filesystems your container can see and use Create and organize pods with labels and annotations Use replication controllers to manage replicas: multiple copies of a pod Set up services, long-lived endpoints that identify a set of pods in your cluster Get started using your own servers, VMs from the public cloud, or a managed offering from a major cloud provider Find examples on GitHub of Kubernetes in use, including WordPress and Guestbook

Abstract: While systems programming languages have greatly evolved since the introduction of C more than 40 years ago, our capacity for dumb mistakes with enormous consequences has remained unchanged, with vivid examples regularly in the news. This O'Reilly report examines Rust, a new systems programming language that combines safety and security with performance on a par with C and C++. Author Jim Blandy from Mozilla explains how Rust achieves this combination via a sophisticated and flexible type system, working together with a novel "borrow checker." Rust promises: No null pointer dereferences. Programs won't crash because you forgot to check whether a pointer was null. No dangling pointers, no leaks. Every value will live as long as it must, and no longer. No buffer overruns. Your program will never access elements beyond the end or before the start of an array. The first two come at no run-time cost: they're checked entirely at compile time. These memory safety guarantees also eliminate data races from multi-threaded programming, making concurrency much easier to use. With this report, you'll learn how to put Rust's safety, performance, and trustworthy concurrency to use, and you'll understand how the type system and borrow checker affect the way you write your code.

Abstract: With the speed of web development today, it's little wonder that so many frameworks are available, since they come with a promise of saving development and design time. But using the wrong framework, or wrongly using the right framework, can be costly. This concise book shares higher-level ideas around web development frameworks that govern HTML and CSS code, whether you're looking at an external option or planning to build your own. Author Jens Oliver Meiert outlines various principles, methods, and practices that you can use to make sure your framework has the functionality you need without bloated code to slow you down. Choose a framework that can be tailored and extended Stick to framework ground rules: follow the documentation and don't overwrite framework code Build a framework by means of a prototype: a static internal website that includes all the page types and elements you need Focus on quality assurance during the development process, and quality control to find and fix framework issues Diligently maintain and update your framework, whether it's for internal or external use Anchor your documentation right where development happens

Abstract: It's tough enough to meet performance goals with a complex system of web servers, application servers, and multiple middleware, but it's much harder when you also have to meet regulatory requirements. In this O'Reilly report, Mark Lustig breaks down the IT issues facing finance, healthcare, and other heavily regulated industries, and then outlines a disciplined process to achieve performance goals in the face of compliance issues. Lustig discusses common performance challenges, including the difficulty of setting appropriate service level agreements (SLA), and includes real-world case studies of four companies that followed the process outlined in the report. With Lustig's process, you'll learn strategies to help you: Define performance goals based on non-functional requirements Identify both business and regulatory constraints Design and develop systems in line with performance goals Define a plan for measuring and monitoring end-to-end performance Implement controls and measures that target potential performance problems Minimize and resolve risks through specific solutions and recommendations

Abstract: The Golden Age of JavaScript began when web developers traded in their fat-server, thin-client approach for desktop-like web apps running in the browser. Unfortunately, that approach led to a succession of problems, so now the pendulum is swinging back in the other direction. Companies such as Walmart, Airbnb, Facebook, and Netflix have already adopted a new solution, using JavaScript code on both the client and server. With this excerpt from O'Reilly's upcoming book Building Isomorphic JavaScript Apps, you'll learn how this method fixes nagging issues such as page-load speeds and SEO compatibility. Authors Jason Strimpel and Maxime Najim from WalmartLabs explain that isomorphic JavaScript is the latest in a series of engineering fixes that brings a harmonious equilibrium between the fat-server, fat-client pendulum. Is isomorphic JavaScript the holy grail of web application development? Decide for yourself. Pick up this free excerpt and discover why this new code-sharing solution is such an important evolutionary step.

This cyber-physical coupling is like trying to engineer a complex new life form, using pre-existing parts that weren't designed to work together. But there is progress. Author Mike Barlow explores how groups such as the Industrial Internet Consortium and the Global City Teams Challenge are working to create a firm structure for the Industrial Internet that includes rules and principles, rather than repeating the serendipitous nature of the Internet. The Industrial Internet isn't just another tech fad. It's the beginning of a new chapter in human history. Will it advance the dream of universal prosperity, or quickly mutate into a chaotic and dangerous "Internet of unsafe things?" Pick up this free report and learn how industrial groups are working to make this dream come true.

Abstract: Big data and the data science revolution have spawned new technologies and analytical approaches that have changed the course of many businesses-and could change the course of the banking industry. In this O'Reilly report, Cornelia Lévy-Bencheton examines the effects of three landmark laws enacted since 2002, and how regulation has led banking away from the type of data-driven changes other industries are making. Lévy-Bencheton explains that the financial services industry is a jerry-rigged patchwork of inelegant, kludged systems and incompatible, outdated technologies seriously needing overhaul. But the new regulations have made the industry risk-averse, leaving big data investments and other innovations low on the list priorities. With this report, you'll explore: Why banks need to create a data-driven culture and technologies matching the customer experience delivered elsewhere How staying competitive is a challenge that needs to be addressed through innovation within the industry, as well as with financial technology (FinTech) startups and accelerators Why spending that emphasizes compliance rather than technology is chronic in the banking industry and, ultimately, regressive

Abstract: Python is not a functional programming language, but it is a multi-paradigm language that makes functional programming easy to perform, and easy to mix with other programming styles. In this paper, David Mertz, a director of Python Software Foundation, examines the functional aspects of the language and points out which options work well and which ones you should generally decline. Mertz describes ways to avoid Python's imperative-style flow control, the nuances of callable functions, how to work lazily with iterators, and the use of higher-order functions. He also lists several third-party Python libraries useful for functional programming. Topics include: Using encapsulation and other means to describe "what" a data collection consists of, rather than "how" to construct a data collection Creating callables with named functions, lambdas, closures, methods of classes, and multiple dispatch Using Python's iterator protocol to accomplish the same effect as a lazy data structure Creating higher-order functions that take functions as arguments and/or produce a function as a result

Abstract: The smart city movement is on a roll. Companies such as GE, Cisco, IBM, and Siemens are looking to transform major cities through advanced computer technologies, sensors, high-speed data networks, predictive analytics, big data, and the IoT. But, as Mike Barlow explains in this O'Reilly report, the story goes beyond technology. Citizens, too, will need to play a large role in turning cities into smart, livable environments. According to a United Nations report, by 2050 two-thirds of humanity will live in more than 40 mega-cities of 10 million people each. All of them will need to determine how to deliver more services with fewer resources. Cities will have to improve efficiency and reduce expenditures wherever possible, through new technologies and other means. To create a thriving environment where innovation can blossom, citizens will not only be called upon to generate much of the data, but they'll also need to be at the center of decision-making, based on what that data reveals. Download this report today, and learn about the progress that various groups and organizations have already made in major cities around the world, and what lies ahead for all of us.

Abstract: Even the best programmers make mistakes, and experienced programmer Mike Pirnat has made his share during 15+ years with Python. Some have been simple and silly; others were embarrassing and downright costly. In this O'Reilly report, he dissects some of his most memorable blunders, peeling them back layer-by-layer to reveal just what went wrong. For example, you could install every third-party package that looks interesting and end up with a tangled mess where nothing works right. Or you could write a test that manages to break the build. Mike's done both and so much more. By avoiding these missteps, you'll be free to make truly significant mistakes-the ones that advance the art of programming. Setup: the ills of an incautiously prepared environment Silly things: trivial mistakes that waste a disproportionate amount of energy Style: poor stylistic decisions that impede readability Structure: assembling code in ways that make change more difficult Surprises: those shocking mysteries that only time can turn from OMG to LOL Code examples are in Python 2, but still relevant for Python 3.

Abstract: Predictive maintenance isn't a new idea. For decades, people in heavy industry have dreamt of eliminating costly machine breakdowns and unplanned system downtime. Now that the data revolution has finally made predictive maintenance feasible, the possibilities seem endless. This O'Reilly report examines how the combination of advanced analytics, low-cost sensors, and the IoT promises to elevate maintenance from a cost center to a profit center. Through interviews with several industry experts, award-winning journalist Mike Barlow reveals that predictive maintenance is more than merely a tool or solution- it's an integrated business strategy. Plant managers can run equipment longer at less cost, VPs can optimize operations in general, and C-suite executives can turn those efficiencies into market advantages and real profits. Many IT, manufacturing, healthcare, and energy firms already practice predictive maintenance, but companies in other industries need time and expertise to pursue the large-scale data collection, advanced analysis, machine learning, and automation required to make it work. This report explores the possible rewards and caveats of this innovative model. Mike Barlow is an award-winning journalist, author, communications strategy consultant, and cofounder of Cumulus Partners.

Abstract: The schism between the functional and object-oriented programmers is really a false binary. Yes, the first group argues that FP is superior for a multicore world, while the second insists that OOP is better at matching technical solutions to business problems. However, as this O'Reilly report explains, this is not an either-or proposition. Technologist Richard Warburton, author of Java 8 Lambas, discusses similarities between these programming paradigms and points out that both FP and OOP are actually moving closer toward one another. One prominent example is the use of lambda expressions in Java and other OOP languages such as C#, C++, and Swift. By following examples written in Java, you will: Learn how lambdas (aka anonymous functions) make OOP languages better suited for dealing with parallelism and concurrency Understand how SOLID-OOP's five basic principles of programming-map to functional languages and paradigms Explore some of the most common OOP design patterns-and how they exist in the functional world

Abstract: Monitoring, the practice of observing systems and determining if they're healthy, is hard--and getting harder. In a perfect world, your anomaly detection system would warn you about new behaviors and data patterns in time to fix problems before they happened, and would be completely foolproof, never ringing the alarm bell when it shouldn't. Such a system doesn't exist (yet), but that shouldn't make you lose sight of the fact that better anomaly detection is possible and can provide tremendous operational benefits. This report demystifies the topic and clarifies some of the fundamental choices that you have to make when constructing anomaly detection mechanisms. You'll learn why some approaches to anomaly detection work better than others in certain situations, and why a better solution for some challenges may be within reach after all. Authors Preetam Jinka and Baron Schwartz introduce the various types of monitoring systems, explain the logic behind them, and help you to navigate the labyrinth of current anomaly detection by outlining the tradeoffs associated with different approaches so you can make judgments as you reach each fork in the road.

Abstract: The future of manufacturing will be self-assembling products. It is said that life is nanotechnology that works-matter assemblers that are not theoretical. Long before industrial revolution, the assembly line, and mass-manufacturing, there were living systems. They successfully populated every energetic niche on the planet with products so technologically advanced and complex that to this day many attribute their design and manufacture to deities. In practical terms, these biological machines are made from non-toxic, commonly available precursors, do not require extreme temperatures or pressures, and are infinitely renewable-characteristics that we will need to apply to the manufacturing of more and more products if humanity is ever to achieve true sustainability. Science has been systematically deciphering the mechanisms of life for centuries, a process of reverse engineering that has been accelerating alongside our ability to manipulate at the micro- and nano-scale. Now, with many of the fundamental systems understood, and the conserved programming language of DNA deciphered, the ability to directly and reliably engineer biological systems and products is coming online. While it is still early days, biocoding and biomanufacturing looks to be one of the most powerful and compelling tools we've ever had to address global needs and challenges, one that will touch virtually every facet of human activity and enterprise. The Autodesk Bio/Nano Programmable Matter group is developing design tools for this space and integrating them with other domains and scales of computer-aided design and manufacturing.

Abstract: Design and production considerations change throughout any product's lifecycle-from prototype to market introduction, through growth and maturity, and finally into decline-with each stage introducing its own set of challenges. But emerging technologies such as 3D printing, robotics, and the IoT are disrupting every stage of this lifecycle as they reinvigorate existing categories and create entirely new ones. In this report, Jonathan Follett from Involution Studios examines from a designer's perspective the ways emerging technologies are affecting the product lifecycle, and explores various options for companies looking at new ways of approaching product design and development. Today, not only must companies contend with the difficulties of introducing emerging tech into their product portfolio, they must also negotiate a labyrinth of complex factors, as the product design and development cycle itself is remade by these new technologies as well. This report will help you to understand and navigate this new world of product design.

Abstract: Whether you know them as "rapid prototyping," "additive manufacturing," or some other buzzword, the processes, technologies, and tools of 3D printing are developing at such a rapid pace that it's easy to be overwhelmed or confused by the ever-increasing range of options. This report helps demystify the field of 3D printing, by outlining the strengths and liabilities of the different types of processes that are currently available, along with an indication of advancements to be on the lookout for in the near future. Because there are many ways to "3D print" an object, this report focuses on distinctions between the various methods (including lithography-based methods, robot-controlled extrusion methods, powder-bed methods, and a few more exotic processes), providing examples of each process in the commercial, consumer, and DIY/open source markets. Rather than promote or endorse a particular make or model of 3D printer (or type of printer), the purpose of this survey is to help identify the right type of printer for particular uses, narrowing the field to a more manageable number of candidates. You'll also learn about concerns and limitations that apply to all methods, which will help inform your selection process when searching for the perfect 3D printer for your needs.
