    Abstract: Die Hoch-Zeit des studentischen Korporationswesens und das Bestehen des deutschen Kolonialreichs von 1884 bis 1919 fielen zeitlich zusammen. Trotzdem hat sich bis heute weder die Kolonialgeschichtsschreibung noch die Studentenforschung eingehender mit dem Verhältnis von Burschenschaften als bekanntester Korporationsform und Kolonialismus beschäftigt. Andreas Bohne ändert das und definiert burschenschaftliche Verbände als imperiale pressure groups ohne expliziten kolonialen Auftrag. Er stellt fest: Burschenschafter agierten aktiv in kolonialen Arenen - gleichzeitig stehen sie exemplarisch für die bürgerlichen Rezipienten der kolonialen Agitation und Popularisierung, die bis heute nachwirkt

    Abstract: Auf einer indonesischen Insel fällt eine Öllampe zu Boden, kurz danach begehen niederländische Soldaten ein Massaker an den Inselbewohnern.Wie hängen diese beiden Geschehnisse zusammen und was geschah danach? Mit dieser Frage beginnt Amitav Ghosh seine Recherche auf den Spuren der Muskatnuss. Heute alltägliches Gewürz, galt sie im 17. Jahrhundert als Luxusgut - allein eine Handvoll davon reichte aus, um einen Palast zu erbauen -, denn die seltene Frucht wuchs nur auf jener Insel, die niederländische Truppen vornehmlich deshalb in Besitz nahmen, um das Handelsmonopol für die Niederländische Ostindien-Kompanie zu sichern. Während Amitav Ghosh die Reise der Muskatnuss nachzeichnet, veranschaulicht er eindrucksvoll die Mechanismen von Kolonialismus und Ausbeutung der Einheimischen sowie der Natur durch westliche Länder. Mitreißend stellt er dabei die Verbindung geschichtlicher Entwicklungen mit aktuellen Realitäten her, verkettet niederländische Stillleben und die Nomenklatur nach Linné mit der Black-Lives-Matter-Bewegung, der Covid-Pandemie und der Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, um zu zeigen, dass der heutige Klimawandel in einer jahrhundertealten geopolitischen Ordnung verwurzelt ist, die vom westlichen Kolonialismus und seiner mechanistischen Weltsicht - die Erde als bloßem Ressourcenlieferant für die Menschheit - geschaffen wurde

    Abstract: Das Verhältnis von Christentum und Kolonialismus ist vielschichtig und häufig undurchsichtig. Ohiniko M. Toffa entwickelt eine neue epistemische Lesart der deutschen Missions- und Kolonialgeschichte in Togo. Anhand der Missionskonzeption des Missionsinspektors Franz Michael Zahn wirft er einen diskursanalytischen Blick auf die unterschiedlichen Ordnungen, Entscheidungen und persönlichen Überlegungen. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf den daraus abzuleitenden Werten und Normen. Diese Herangehensweise bringt eine neue Kolonialmoral hervor und liefert somit wichtige Anstöße für eine Dekolonialisierung des Wissens

    Abstract: The late nineteenth century saw a rapid increase in colonial conflicts throughout the French and British empires. It was also the period in which the camera began to be widely available. Colonial authorities were quick to recognise the power of this new technology, which they used to humiliate defeated opponents and to project an image of supremacy across the world.Drawing on a wealth of visual materials, from soldiers' personal albums to the collections of press agencies and government archives, this book offers a new account of how conflict photography developed in the decades leading up to the First World War. It explores the various ways in which the camera was used to impose order on subject populations in Africa and Asia and to generate propaganda for the public in Europe, where a visual economy of violence was rapidly taking shape. At the same time, it reveals how photographs could escape the intentions of their creators, offering a means for colonial subjects to push back against oppression. --

    Abstract: Im Zuge des Denkmalsturzes ehemaliger Sklavenhalter werden auch westliche Konzepte auf ihren Beitrag zu Rassismus und Unterdrückung hin untersucht. Ein solches Konzept ist der fest im europäischen Denken verankerte Begriff "Barbarei". "Barbarei" ist der zentrale Begriff für die Beschreibung anderer Völker, die seit der Antike die Abwertung anderer Kulturen markiert und immer wieder neu bestimmt wird. In der europäischen Geschichte ist "Barbarei" auf das Engste mit dem Kolonialismus verbunden und muss somit als dessen Komplize und Erbe verstanden werden. "Barbarei" steht für das "Andere" westlicher Ordnung und zivilisierter Werte. Man beklagt damit furchtbare Verbrechen und verurteilt sie als moralisch besonders verwerflich. Zurückgreifen können diese politischen Verwendungsweisen auf eine lange Geschichte theoretischer Konzepte der "Barbarei"

Rezension: Vorauflage 2005. Der Verfasser, geboren 1958, ist inzwischen Präsident der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und Professor für Kulturgeschichte. Seine "Kleine Geschichte Afrikas" (2007 und 2009) hat Roland Schmitt sehr empfohlen. Allerdings nimmt das Thema jedoch in den letzten Jahren in der öffentlichen Diskussion einen wesentlich breiteren Raum ein, wofür auch zahlreiche ÖB-relevante Titel (z.B. G. Graichen/H. Gründer: "Deutsche Kolonien, Traum und Trauma", 2005 und H. Gründer: "Geschichte der deutschen Kolonien", 1991 sowie "Die Deutschen und ihre Kolonien", 2017), stehen; daher sei der Titel als preiswerte, wenn auch anspruchsvolle Überblicksdarstellung - nach Sebastian Conrads gleichnamigen Titel (2008; zuletzt 4. Auflage 2019) - zur fachlichen Ergänzung bei entsprechender Nachfrage durchaus sehr empfohlen. (3)

    Abstract: Raubkunst, Kunstraub, koloniale Sammlungen von Kulturgütern – nicht erst seit der Kontroverse um die nigerianischen Benin-Bronzen des Humboldt-Forums in Berlin ist ein Streit darüber ausgebrochen, wie mit Sammlungsobjekten aus kolonialen Kontexten umgegangen werden sollte. Die unter Fachleuten schon länger andauernde Debatte hat 2018 neue politische Brisanz gewonnen, als der französische Staatspräsident Macron erstmals die Rückgabe an die Herkunftsgesellschaften ankündigte und konkrete Schritte prüfen ließ. Mit der Forderung nach Restitution von Kunstschätzen kolonialer Provenienz werden grundlegende und äußerst komplexe Fragen nach der Gegenwart der Vergangenheit aufgeworfen und das in ethischer, wissenschaftlicher, politischer, juristischer und ästhetischer Hinsicht. Sie betreffen nicht nur Kunsthistoriker*innen und Museumsfachleute , sondern auch Kultur-, Wissenschaftshistoriker*innen, Jurist*innen und Geschichtsdidaktiker*innen, aber auch alle diejenigen, die Museen besuchen, die sich koloniale Sammlungen anschauen und sich bisher wenig mit der Provenienz von Objekten beschäftigt haben. Im vorliegenden Band wird erstmals der Versuch unternommen, die geschichtskulturellen Dimensionen der Debatte auszuleuchten und einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit nahezubringen. Rund dreißig deutsche und internationale Autor*innen melden sich zu Wort. Die Aufsätze verdeutlichen, wie wichtig es ist, ein Kernstück der gegenwärtigen gesellschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung um das Erbe des Kolonialismus von verschiedenen Blickwinkeln aus zu betrachten: Einfache Antworten gibt es nicht, und gerade in dieser Schwierigkeit liegt die besondere Aufgabe.

Lange vergessen, kehrt die Kolonialperiode in Ländern wie Namibia, Kamerun oder Ruanda in den letzten Jahren in die Erinnerung zurück. Was bedeutet dieses Wiederauftauchen für die Bundesrepublik? Müsste in der "postkolonialen" Sichtweise nicht auch das deutsche Eroberungsstreben in Richtung Osten eine Rolle spielen? Die neue Erinnerungskultur hat gravierende Auswirkungen für das Selbstverständnis eines Landes, dessen Bevölkerung immer diverser wird.     Abstract: In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jhs. baute Deutschland ein weites Kolonialreich auf. Dass dieser Teil der deutschen Geschichte heute oft vergessen ist, hängt mit dem frühen Verlust der Kolonien nach der Niederlage im Westen Weltkrieg zusammen. Kolonialgeschichte aber ist ein zentraler Teil einer gemeinsamen Geschichte von Europa und dem 'Rest der Welt'. Die Ausstellung in Berlin thematisiert Herrschaftspraxis und wirtschaftliche Ausbeutung sowie den Umgang mit der einheimischen Bevölkerung bis hin zum Völkermord.     Abstract: 1900 soll der Kolonialbeamte Geo Schmidt eine junge Afrikanerin vergewaltigt haben. Doch solche Übergriffe waren in den Kolonien nahezu alltäglich, warum also die Aufregung? Hier erfahren wir, worum es wirklich ging: Der Kolonialbeamte, eigentlich der mächtigste Mann vor Ort, rang nicht nur mit der afrikanischen Bevölkerung. In Togo waren auch christliche Missionare tätig, die vor allem Gottes Wort verbreiten wollten und ihre Bemühungen durch Geo Schmidt gefährdet sahen. Ihre unzähligen Briefe nach Berlin, in denen sie Schmidts Treiben schildern, sind beredte Zeugnisse eines grundlegenden Konflikts im kolonialen Raum. Und sie führten dazu, dass im Berliner Reichstag Abgeordnete wetterten, die Mission der Zivilisierung in Afrika werde durch brutale Kolonialbeamte gefährdet. Lebendig schildert Rebekka Habermas die Beziehungen, Interessen und Motive der Beteiligten, den Rassismus und Alltag vor Ort und die kolonialen Echos, die der Skandal in der Gesellschaft des deutschen Kaiserreichs hervorrief. Damit bietet sie neue, erstaunliche Einblicke - eine glänzend erzählte Mikrogeschichte des Kolonialismus und ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Kolonialgeschichte. „Mit "Skandal in Togo" legt Rebekka Habermas eine fundierte Fallstudie über ein weithin unbekanntes Kapitel deutscher Kolonialgeschichte vor. Ihre Arbeit geht weit über eine rein deskriptive Abhandlung hinaus. Auch wenn an manchen Stellen eine anschaulichere Darstellung wünschenswert gewesen wäre, so widersteht sie doch der Versuchung, die Gewaltexzesse ausführlich zu beschreiben und damit voyeuristische Gelüste zu bedienen. Habermas‘ Analyse liefert erhellende Erkenntnisse über die Strukturen kolonialer Herrschaft zu Zeiten des Kaiserreichs. Sie macht aber auch deutlich, dass die Spuren des kolonialen Erbes bis in die Gegenwart reichen.     Abstract: Die verdrängte und auch weitgehend vergessene deutsche Kolonialgeschichte ist erfreulicherweise in den letzten Jahren in den Fokus der Forschung geraten. Eine beachtliche Anzahl an Fach- und Sachliteratur hat sich mit der lange Zeit verharmlosten wilhelminischen Kolonialpolitik zurecht sehr kritisch beschäftigt. Oft sind es aber gerade Einzelschicksale, die das Interesse an verdrängten Themen wecken können. Der Autor, Publizist und Jurist (zuletzt "Das Grundgesetz", ID-A 11/09), zeichnet eine (exemplarische!) Episode im ehemaligen "Schutzgebiet" Kamerun nach, die zu Beginn des 1. Weltkriegs mit dem Justizmord an Prinz Manga Bell ihr skandalöses Ende fand. Der Sohn des Häuptlings des Duala-Volkes war den Deutschen wohlgesonnen, hatte als junger Mann in Ulm gelebt, das deutsche Rechtssystem kennengelernt. Er protestierte nunmehr aber gegen Landraub und Segregation, wandte sich an den Reichstag und die Öffentlichkeit. Um ihn loszuwerden, klagte die Kolonialregierung ihn des Hochverrats an und liess den in seiner Heimat bis heute als "Tet'ekombo" ("Vater der Nation") Verehrten hinrichten. (2 S)

    Abstract: "A turn towards the 'colonial margins' can be observed lately within colonial and postcolonial studies. It has been argued that states without former colonies and their inhabitants shared colonial discourses and were intensely involved in colonial practices. This anthology looks at Switzerland, which constitutes a perfect case in point for a host of reasons: its strong economic involvement with imperial projects of other European countries, its transnationally entangled scientific community, its doctrine of neutrality, which, among other things, made the country attractive as operational base for anti-colonial activists, the significance of Swiss Christian missions as well of the secular development aid sector thereafter, and, last but not least, a palpable, though often denied racist discourse in contemporary public debates. This collection brings together the most exciting and challenging products of recent scholarship on colonial and postcolonial Switzerland and makes them available in English for the first time"--

    Abstract: "Assimilating Seoul, the first English-language book-length study of colonial Seoul during the years 1910-1945, challenges conventional nationalist paradigms to reveal the intersection of Korean and Japanese history in this important capital. Henry offers a transnational account that treats the city's public spaces as "contact zones." Through micro-histories of Shinto festivals, industrial expositions, and sanitation campaigns, he shows how residents negotiated pressures to become loyal, industrious, and hygienic subjects of the Japanese empire. Unlike previous, top-down analyses, this ethnographic history investigates modalities of Japanese rule as experienced from below. Although the colonial state set ambitious goals for the integration of Koreans, Japanese settler elites and lower-class expatriates reshaped the speed and direction of assimilation by bending government initiatives to their own interests and identities. Meanwhile, Korean men and women of different classes and generations re-articulated the terms and degree of their incorporation into a multi-ethnic polity. Assimilating Seoul captures these fascinating responses to an empire that used the lure of empowerment to disguise the reality of alienation"--
