    Abstract: Das westlich-moderne Konzept der (männlichen) »Homosexualität« umfasst neben der Vorstellung von der Gleichgeschlechtlichkeit der Partner auch die Annahme ihrer sozialen Gleichwertigkeit. Kulturhistorisch betrachtet ist dies allerdings eine entschiedene Ausnahme. In vielen Kulturen bildet(e) gerade die Ungleichheit - etwa hinsichtlich Alter, Stand oder Sexualverhalten - eine Bedingung, um gleichgeschlechtliche Beziehungen kulturell verhandelbar und teils sogar sozial akzeptabel zu machen. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes widmen sich diesen verschiedenen Manifestationen mann-männlichen Begehrens und verdeutlichen dabei die Eigenheiten der jeweiligen Konzepte, Praktiken und sozialen Bewertungen gleichgeschlechtlicher Beziehungen im Kulturvergleich

    Abstract: Ageing and memory - two aspects of life everybody has to face eventually. The contributions to this volume explore the cultural mediations of these categories. Through a series of approaches focused on practices and acts of memory, narratives, reminiscence, representation and collective memory, they seek to better understand and critically reflect on how ageing is experienced in variegated ways across the lifespan. By covering a variety of phenomena, from biopics, music by the elderly, and artefacts, among other, they all contribute to further the understanding of memory as a cultural process always in the making - situated in particular contexts, and shaped by its material conditions of existence

    Abstract: Sind Künstler und Kultureinrichtungen kulturelle Übersetzer? Welche Rolle spielen Konzepte wie jenes der Transkulturalität? Die Beiträge des Bandes stellen das Thema der (trans-)kulturellen Übersetzung in den Mittelpunkt und schlagen eine Brücke zwischen Kunst und Kulturbetrieb. Dafür ist der sogenannte Cultural Turn ebenso relevant wie neueste Erkenntnisse aus Kulturbetrieb und -management. Neben transkulturellen Phänomenen in bildender Kunst, Musik, Literatur und Theater widmen sich die Beiträge der Kulturvermittlung auf Festivals, in Museen, Theatern, Bibliotheken, Konzert- und Opernsälen. Ebenso werden Prozesse des (inter-)nationalen Kulturmanagements fokussiert, die von ihren Akteuren gleichfalls modifizierte Denkstrukturen verlangen
    Abstract: Um den deutschen Kulturbetrieb und dessen Selbstverständnis geht es in diesem Sammelband. Dabei spielt das Konzept der Transkulturalität eine entscheidende Rolle, das gerade in Deutschland als Einwanderungsland im Kunst- und Kulturbereich relevant ist. Je nach sozialem und kulturellem Kontext unterscheidet sich die Deutung kultureller Praktiken sowie die Auffassung und Interpretation von Kunst- und Kulturerzeugnissen. Haben Kunstschaffende und Kultureinrichtungen somit die Aufgabe, als kulturelle Übersetzer zu fungieren? Wie können Inhalte einem "fremden" Publikum nahe gebracht werden? Können Kunst und Kultur zwischen verschiedenen Lebensrealitäten vermitteln? Welchen Einfluss haben nationale Transformationsprozesse durch Einwanderung auf den Kulturbetrieb? Wie prägen Kulturschaffende das Kulturverständnis eines Landes beziehungsweise einer Gesellschaft? Die Antworten auf diese Fragen fallen dabei sehr unterschiedlich aus. Während durch die Beiträge zu Begriffen wie Transkulturalität, "Glokalisierung", Kultur und kulturelle Übersetzter einerseits ein theoretischer Rahmen gesetzt wird, zeigen andere Autoren anhand konkreter Beispiele die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der (transkulturellen) Kulturvermittlung auf. Auch der Einfluss des eigenen sozialen und kulturellen Standpunkts kultureller Übersetzer wird in dem Band einer kritischen Reflexion unterzogen. (ifa)

Die Beiträge beinhalten Fallstudien zu Sozialen Medien, Werbung und Bewertung, aber auch zu mobilen Sicherheitsinfrastrukturen wie z.B. Drohnen.

    Abstract: "China's transformation from a poor and underdeveloped country into a global market power has profoundly altered its socioeconomic power relations with the other countries in the Greater China region, namely, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Indeed, this economic shift has resulted in the massive flow of capital and people from Taiwan as well as Hong Kong to China, to seek business opportunities and new lifestyles. These flows have in turn completely transformed longstanding borderlines in the region. This book examines the transformation of Taiwan and Hong Kong's socioeconomic relationships with China as their economies have become more deeply integrated into Greater China. Across three key sections, it explores the impact of increasing social interaction and the shrinking of existing borderlines to ask whether these changes will bring about a convergence of identity among the people involved. 'Production', examines how investments from Taiwan and Hong Kong to China have transformed production networks; 'community and daily life' explores the impact of cross boundary mobility and the integration of migrants into Chinese communities; and finally, 'identity formation' engages with what is one of the most important issues in contemporary Taiwanese society. Border Crossing in Greater China contributes not only to theoretical debates on border crossing issues, but also provides valuable insights on the practical concerns regarding social and political integration and tensions in the region. As such, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Taiwan studies, Chinese studies, Chinese society and Chinese economics."

    Abstract: What role do nationalism and popular protest play in China's foreign relations? Chinese authorities permitted anti-American demonstrations in 1999 but repressed them in 2001 during two crises in U.S.-China relations. Anti-Japanese protests were tolerated in 1985, 2005, and 2012 but banned in 1990 and 1996. Protests over Taiwan, the issue of greatest concern to Chinese nationalists, have never been allowed. To explain this variation, Powerful Patriots identifies the diplomatic as well as domestic factors that drive protest management in authoritarian states. Because nationalist protests are costly to repress and may turn against the government, allowing protests demonstrates resolve and makes compromise more costly in diplomatic relations. Repressing protests, by contrast, sends a credible signal of reassurance, facilitating diplomatic flexibility. Powerful Patriots traces China's management of dozens of nationalist protests and their consequences between 1985 and 2012. -- Provided by publisher

    Abstract: "The Uyghur Lobby is the first systematic and contemporary examination of the global operations of the World Uyghur Congress (WUC). The Uyghur lobby is not a unified movement; wide divisions exist regarding how activists should promote national self-determination. The localization of the movement leads its affiliate organizations to find their own paths for survival. Framing of the Uyghur issue plays a vital role in allowing local Uyghur affiliate to create independent alliances and bases of support. In general, people who tend to involve themselves with WUC member organizations share a belief that the cause of Uyghur self-determination can only be achieved through peaceful means, and in that context, the protection of human rights in China is a prime concern. In discussing the Uyghur lobby in the US, Germany and Japan, it becomes clear that most of the coalitions cobbled together in the domestic political arena are a reflection of the political games within these countries. The Uyghur lobby is thus highly constrained by the broader domestic politics of its host countries to have actual policy impacts to realize its political ambition.This unique and timely study reveals how an issue concerning a Chinese minority has been catapulted onto the wider global political stage, and how Uyghur groups have been successful in raising their visibility. As such, it will be of great interest to students and scholars working on Chinese politics, the Uyghur issue, and minority and ethnic politics, social movements, human rights, and international politics more broadly.     Abstract: "In recent decades, Chinese cities have experienced profound social, economic and spatial transformations. In particular, Chinese cities have witnessed the largest housing boom in history and unprecedented housing privatization. China now is a country of homeowners, with more than 70% of urban residents owning homes, higher than many developed countries. This book shows how China's spectacular housing success is not shared by all social groups, with rapidly rising housing inequality, and residential segregation increasingly prevalent in previously homogeneous Chinese cities. It focuses on the two extremes of the residential landscape, and reveals the stark contrast between low-income households who live in shacks in so-called "urban villages" and the nouveaux riches who live in exclusive gated villa communities. Over four parts, the contributors look at the degree to which inequality affects Chinese cities, and the extent of residential differentiation; the urban poor, and in particular, housing for migrants from rural China; the rapidly expanding Chinese middle class and the newly rich; and finally, governance in residential neighbourhoods. Housing Inequality in Chinese Cities presents theoretically informed and empirically grounded research into the polarized residential landscape in Chinese cities, and as such will be of great interest to students and scholars of Chinese studies, urban geography and urban studies.     Abstract: Sind antimuslimische Diskurse Ausdruck einer aktuellen Form des Rassismus? Anhand von Fallbeispielen - darunter auflagenstarke Buchpublikationen, Zeitungsartikel, Webseiten und Zuschriften an muslimische Verbände - geht Yasemin Shooman den antimuslimischen Narrativen und ihren Funktionen nach. Sie untersucht die artikulierten Selbst- und Fremdbilder ebenso wie die Rolle historischer Bezüge und arbeitet das Repertoire dominanter antimuslimischer Stereotype und Topoi heraus. Die empirische Analyse trägt auch zur Theoriebildung in dem relativ jungen Forschungsfeld bei und zeigt, dass eine Rassifizierung religiöser Zugehörigkeit zu beobachten ist, die auf dem Ineinandergreifen der Kategorien Kultur, Religion, Ethnizität, Geschlecht und Klasse basiert.

    Abstract: "The empirical case study research literature on Chinese management is meagre. This rapidly changing market environment requires more research to provide an understanding of empirical processes of management practice and the business landscape in which they operate. This book adopts a holistic view to assess the impact of market socialism upon evolving economic enterprises and their ownership forms, which laid an emphasis on the effects of market socialist policies in shaping contrasting management patterns and behaviours in China between 2005-2010. The book provides a comparative perspective on organizational development and management systems by focusing on three key emerging issues associated with the development of economic enterprise and market socialism in China: the emergence of different types of business venture; their contrasting management processes and patterns; and the impact of the political and institutional environment. Based on longitudinal case study research between 2005 and 2010, the book explores the distinctive characteristics of emerging forms of economic enterprise under market socialism in China and identifies how rapid environmental and institutional changes in economic reforms are impacting upon their practice; particularly the role of government policy in shaping their ownership and management processes. General patterns in the development of business ventures are identified to outline the dynamics of industrial and organizational change under the transitional phases of a market socialist economy"--

    Abstract: "Over the past three decades, China's economic structure, direction and international presence have undergone a dramatic transformation. This rapid rise and China's enormous success in economic terms has created new challenges, and this book examines how the Chinese economy can continue to flourish' whilst at the same time protecting the environment and giving people more equal access to the benefits of the country's economic development. Examining the key issues surrounding China's continued sustainable development' in economic, political, social and more traditional environmental terms, this book assesses the costs of China's rapid development to date and in turn asks whether this can be maintained. The contributors show that the idea of sustainable development must take into account more than just the classic idea of the physical environment, and that there are additional problems relating to the sustainability of China's economic growth that are much more complicated. Divided into two broad sections, the book looks first at the broader issues of sustainability in China, before turning to the more classic idea of sustainability, that of the environment. In doing so, the contributors show that sustainability is a far more complex phenomenon than is often assumed, and that economic and social sustainability are inherently linked to linked to environmental sustainability.Dealing with what are arguably the greatest set of challenges facing China today, this book will be will be of great interests to students and scholars of Chinese studies, Chinese economics and Chinese politics, as well as those interested in development studies and sustainable development more broadly"--

Instead, the choice that they face is not whether or not to incorporate culture into their analysis but whether to employ culture implicitly or explicitly.     Abstract: "Ever since China and Vietnam resumed diplomatic contacts and reopened the border in 1991, the borderland region has come been part of the vibrant growing economies of both countries and drawn many from the interior provinces to the borderland for new economic adventures. This book examines Chinese-Vietnamese relationships at the borderland through every day cross-border interactions in trade and tourism activities. It looks into the historical underlining of bilateral relations of the two countries which often shape people's perceptions of the 'other' and interpretation of intentions of acts in their daily interactions. Albeit Chinese and Vietnamese have lived side by side for centuries, their interactions in the space of trade and modern tourism activities in post-war and post-reform China and Vietnam are something novel to both people. The book provides a 'bottom-up' approach to examine localized experiences of inter-state relations. It illustrates the changes the vibrant economic process has brought to the borderland communities, and how the newly revived contacts and interactions have provided a contested space for testing Vietnamese-Chinese interactions and demonstrating trans-border cultural politics.     Abstract: "Freedom of Information (FOI) in China is often perceived as a recent and intriguing phenomenon. This book presents a more complex and detailed understanding of the evolution of FOI in China, using information flow analysis to explore the gradual development of government receptivity to FOI in an information environment through time. The book argues that it is necessary to reassess the widely divergent origins of FOI reform in China, and asserts that social, political and legal factors should have central roles in understanding the development of FOI in China. The book uses information flow analysis to find that FOI reform in China formed part of a much longer process of increased transparency in the Chinese information environment, which gradually shifted from the acceptance of proactive disclosure to that of reactive disclosure.
