    Kurzfassung: The Croatian-born Matthias Flacius Illyricus (1520–1575) was a Lutheran theologian and reformer who spent most of his adult life in the German-speaking territories of the Holy Roman Empire, playing an important role within the Evangelical churches and in the confessionalization of his day. Luka Ili? establishes that Flacius’ theology became increasingly radicalized with time and examines aspects of this process through following two parallel tracks. One trajectory focuses on the development of Flacius’ theological thought, while the other one discusses the pivotal influences and major turning points in his life, such as being exiled from different cities. Although Flacius did enjoy some measure of success and even attracted a considerable number of followers for shorter periods of time, his radicalized theology ultimately led to his public downfall and marred his legacy. Flacius’ relationships with the most important Wittenberg figures, Luther and Melanchthon, are also explored, along with the vast personal and professional networks Flacius built up in imperial cities, all of which shaped his theological development. One of the dominant claims is that Flacius’ understanding of original sin and of grace were the lynchpin for much of his opus. At the same time, the findings demonstrate that Flacius was a multifaceted individual with interest and competences in a number of different academic fields.

    Kurzfassung: "Over the past few years, secularism has become an intrinsic component of discussions on religious freedom and religious governance. The question of whether states should restrict the wearing of headscarves and other religious symbols has been particularly critical in guiding this thought process. Refashioning Secularisms in France and Turkey documents how, in both countries, devout women have contested bans on headscarves, pointing to how these are inconsistent with the 'real' spirit of secularism. These activists argue that it is possible to be simultaneously secular and religious; to believe in the values conveyed by secularism, while still remaining devoted to their faith. Through this examination, the book highlights how activists locate their claims within the frame of secularism, while at the same time revisiting it to craft a space for their religiosity.     Kurzfassung: Tulips and coffee are defining cultural products of the Ottoman eighteenth century, along with their related institutions of palace and coffeehouse. These cultural products hold multiple meanings in the history and historiography of the period. They are associated with the daily life of common people and their sociabilities, on the one hand, and with the Ottoman court and imperial legitimacy, on the other. 'Ottoman Tulips, Ottoman Coffee' offers a critical exploration of definitive cultural phenomena of the Ottoman eighteenth century, such as, the coffee house, the printing press, imperial architecture and royal pageantry and festivals. Chapters explore subjects ranging from the changing forms of imperial ritual in Ottoman circumcision celebrations, to the history of the construction of the famed palace of Saadabad, to the reputedly failed project of the first Ottoman printing press. In doing so, the book reassesses the history and unravels the historiography of the so-called 'Tulip Period'. Further, the book also reconsiders the coffeehouse to see it as a multifunctional space, which was used variously for such diverse means and ends as a rebel headquarters, a Sufi lodge, police station and racketeering office. Most importantly this book attempts to transcend current debates about the purported Ottoman eighteenth century cultural and political decline and the twin teleologies of Westernization and modernization. It views the Ottoman Empire in its natural geography of Eurasia and sees its interactions as significantly with the East as much as with the West

Interrogating the work of contemporary theorists of Islamic modernity such as Mohammed Arkoun, Abdul an-Na'im, Fatima Mernissi, Talal Asad, Saba Mahmood, and Aziz Al-Azmeh, this book explores the debate on Islam, democracy, and modernity, contextualized within contemporary Muslim lifeworlds. These include contemporary Turkey (following the 9/11 attacks and the onset of war in Afghanistan), multicultural France (2009-10 French burqa debate), Egypt (the 2011 Tahrir Square mass mobilizations), and India. Ali Mirsepassi and Tadd Fernee; critique particular counterproductive ideological conceptualizations, voicing an emerging global ethic of reconciliation. Rejecting the polarized conceptual ideals of the universal or the authentic, the authors critically reassess notions of the secular, the cosmopolitan, and democracy. Raising questions that cut across the disciplines of history, anthropology, sociology, and law, this study articulates a democratic politics of everyday life in modern Islamic societies"--

    Kurzfassung: 1850 brachen im osmanischen Aleppo Unruhen aus, in deren Verlauf muslimische Einwohner aus den östlichen Vororten von Christen bewohnte Stadtteile überfielen. Erst das militärische Eingreifen der osmanischen Autoritäten führte zur Beendigung des Aufstands.
    Kurzfassung: Die vorliegende Studie zeichnet auf der Basis bislang nur in Manuskriptform zugänglicher Quellen aus Kirchenarchiven in Aleppo und Damaskus einen Konflikt zwischen gesellschaftlichen Gruppen mit komplexen Profilen nach. Dafür werden miteinander verflochtene politische, wirtschaftliche und administrative Ursachen der Ereignisse analysiert, die mit in der Frühzeit der Tanzimat-Reformen initiierten Prozessen des Wandels verbunden waren.
    Kurzfassung: Die Untersuchung richtet den Fokus insbesondere auf den städtischen Raum, der bedeutende historische Entwicklungen reflektiert, die wiederum auf ihn zurückwirken. Diese Perspektive ermöglicht es, eine Geschichte der Aleppiner Bevölkerung zu entwerfen, über die verfügbare Quellen meist schweigen.

    Kurzfassung: In 'Intangible Spirits and Graven Images', Michael Shenkar investigates the perception of ancient Iranian deities and their representation in the Iranian cults. This ground-breaking study traces the evolution of the images of these deities, analyses the origin of their iconography, and evaluates their significance. Shenkar also explores the perception of anthropomorphism and aniconism in ancient Iranian religious imagery, with reference to the material evidence and the written sources, and reassesses the value of the Avestan and Middle Persian texts that are traditionally employed to illuminate Iranian religious imagery. In doing so, this book provides important new insights into the religion and culture of ancient Iran prior to the Islamic conquest

    Kurzfassung: Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die Sozial- und Religionsgeschichte der maurischen Tiğānīya anhand der Analyse ihrer religiösen Theorie und Praxis sowie ihrer sozialen Organisation.
    Kurzfassung: Mithilfe der Neuerschließung arabischer Manuskripte, Print-, Video-, Audiomedien und Zeitzeugeninterviews wird das Leben des mauretanischen Sufi-Scheichs Šaihānī (1907-1986) rekonstruiert. Šaihānī repräsentierte den Zweig der maurischen Tiğānīya, der sich maßgeblich für die Etablierung einer im Senegal entstandenen Erneuerungsbewegung in Mauretanien einsetzte.
    Kurzfassung: Diese von Ibrāhīm Niasse (1900-1975) Ende der 1920er Jahre inspirierte Erneuerung zeichnete sich insbesondere durch die Popularisierung von Transzendenzerfahrungen aus.

    Kurzfassung: Die Trümmerfrau gehört zum festen Repertoire nahezu jeder historischen Darstellung der Nachkriegszeit, ganz gleich, ob in TV- und Printmedien, in Schulbüchern oder in Ausstellungen der historischen Museen. Seit Anfang der 1950er Jahre bis in unsere unmittelbare Gegenwart kam es darüber hinaus in den unterschiedlichsten Städten immer wieder zur Errichtung von Trümmerfrauen -Denkmälern. Leonie Treber hat erstmals die überlieferten Fakten geprüft und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Trümmerfrauen ein Mythos sind; es gibt nur ganz wenige Belege dafür, dass tatsächlich Frauen im Krieg und in der Nachkriegszeit Bombentrümmer beseitigt haben. Meist waren professionelle Firmen mit technischem Großgerät und Fachkräften die Hauptakteure bei der Trümmerräumung. Und sie zeigt, wie der Mythos Trümmerfrau mit all seinen Facetten entstanden ist. „Treber zeigt, wie nach der Wiedervereinigung die beiden doch sehr unterschiedlichen west- und ostdeutschen Trümmerfrauen-Traditionen auffallend schnell zu einem gesamtdeutschen Erinnerungsort verschmolzen. Der von Politikern immer dann gerne heraufbeschworen wird, wenn an die Leistungs- und Opferbereitschaft der Deutschen appelliert werden soll. Zunehmend wird die Trümmerfrau aber auch vom rechtsradikalen Milieu instrumentalisiert, um Deutschland als Opfer des Zweiten Weltkrieges darzustellen. Es ist Leonie Trebers Verdienst, dass sie die Trümmerfrau als Mythos entlarvt. Und sie belegt dies am Schluss ihres Buches auch mit Bildern, die sie in den Archiven wieder entdeckt hat: Bilder von Männern, die Trümmer räumen, von schwerem Gerät und von politisch belasteten Frauen, die die Alliierten zwangen, Schutt zu schaufeln“ (deutschlandfunk.de)
