    Abstract: Einige Bewohner von Malingdam werden beim Haareschneiden beobachtet: Kleine Haarbüschel werden mit den Fingern gefaßt und mit einem scharfkantigen Bambusspan in der Nähe der Kopfhaut abgeschnitten bzw. mit freihändig geführter Rasierklinge in durchgehende Streifen geschnitten. Die Haartracht ist einheitlich: Außer einer kreisförmigen Fläche auf der Schädeldecke wird das Haupthaar abgeschnitten.
    Abstract: A few inhabitants of Malingdam are observed while they cut hair. Small bushels of hair are grasped with the fingers and cut close to the scalp with a sharp-edged bamboo chip. The hairstyle is uniform: Except for a circular area on the top of the head, all the hair is cut off.

    Abstract: Der 56jährige Reisbauer Umi Tupai sitzt auf der Plattform seines Hauses in Palangan und schnitzt aus einem weichen Holz (Palantan) eine kleine Hampatong-Figur. Die Figur weist die Zeichen einer Schwangerschaft auf. In den Händen hält sie ein Kästchen, in dem das Zubehör für das Betelkauen aufbewahrt wird. Der Schnitzer benötigt ca. 3 Stunden für die Arbeit. Er ist der einzige Mann im Dorf, der diese Kunst beherrscht.
    Abstract: Seated on the platform of his house at Palangan, the 56-year-old rice-grower Umi Tupai carves a small hampatong figure in soft pelantan wood. The female figure shows the signs of pregnancy. In the hands she holds a small box containing the utensils for betel-chewing. It takes the carver three hours to achieve the figure. He is the only man in the village skilled in this art.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Dorong starb eine 80jährige Frau, die als Priesterin andere Frauen ausgebildet hat. Nach der Aufbahrung treffen Trauergäste ein. Frauen aus der Verwandtschaft halten Trauerwache und singen Klagelieder. Zwei Priesterinnen führen die Totenzeremonien durch. Am zweiten Tag wird die Tote in einen Einbaumsarg gelegt, der fest verschlossen wird. Am dritten Tag wird sie auf dem Friedhof beerdigt.
    Abstract: In Dorong village, near Tamiang, an eighty-year-old woman has died. She was a priestess (wadian), responsible also for the training of other women. The film presents the exposure of the corpse, the arrival of the mourners, and the ceremonies connected with this event. The ceremonies are performed by two priestesses, one having the function of a teacher. The second day the corpse is laid in the coffin, the third day the burial takes place in the cemetery.

    Abstract: Vor dem Männerhaus in Malingdam/Imarin halten sich spielende Jungen und Männer auf. Salap verziert einen Ohrpflock, indem er mit dem Schneidezahn eines Nagetieres Verzierungen in den Bambus kratzt. Die Verzierungen bestreicht er mit Hautfett, um die Musterung hervortreten zu lassen. Er steckt den Ohrpflock in sein linkes Ohrläppchen. Während er arbeitet, spielt ein anderer Mann auf einer Maultrommel.
    Abstract: Several boys and men are playing in front of the men's house in Malingdam/Imarin. Salap is decorating an ear peg by scratching decorations in the bamboo with a rodent incisor. He smears dermal fat into the decorations so that the pattern will stand out. He sticks the ear peg into his left ear lobe. While he is working, another man is playing a Jew's harp.

    Abstract: Vor dem Männerhaus in Malingdam spielen Jungen verschiedenen Alters. Bei dem ersten Spiel bauen sie aus ihren Händen einen Turm, den sie dann zusammenstürzen lassen. Bei dem zweiten Spiel formen sie aus Daumen und Zeigefinger Ringe, die übereinandergelegt eine Röhre ergeben. In diese schlägt ein Mitspieler mit der flachen Hand einen Stein, der ein Tier symbolisiert. Ein anderer Mitspieler muß erraten, in wessen Hand sich der Stein befindet.
    Abstract: Boys of different ages are playing in front of the men's house in Malingdam. In the first game they make a tower with their hands, which they then allow to collapse. In the second game they form rings from their thumbs and index fingers, which form a tube when they are placed one upon the other. In this game one player strikes a stone with the flat of his hand, which symbolises an animal. Another player has to guess in whose hand the stone is located.

    Abstract: Bündel salzhaltiger Blätter, von den Eipo 'Uwa' genannt (Psychotria; Rubiaceae), werden zum Glimmen gebracht und in eine aus Bananenblättern gedrehte Röhre gesteckt. Das Mundstück der Röhre wird in einen durch Kauen von Pfefferblättern, Ingwer und salzhaltiger Asche hergestellten, dünnen Brei getaucht. Der Dampf der glimmenden Blätter wird inhaliert.
    Abstract: Bundles of leaves containing salt, called 'Uwa' by the Eipo, (Psychotria; Rubiaceae) are made to smoulder and inserted into a tube made by rolling banana leaves. The tube's mouthpiece is immersed in a thin mush made by chewing pepper leaves, ginger and salty ashes. The steam from the smouldering leaves is inhaled.

Anschließend ziehen die Mädchen einige Wasserpflanzen hoch und sammeln auch die darunter befindlichen Kleintiere ein.

In this manner the insect larvae in the water get caught in the thick plant growth and can be collected in dip nets. Then the girls lift a number of water plants and also collect the small animals under them.

He puts an andesite blade as well as leaf and fibrous material to serve as a lining on the shorter arm of the branch-fork which is to serve as the shaft and wraps it tightly with the strips of rattan.     Abstract: Salap, ein Mann aus Malingdam/Imarin, spannt Kettfäden über ein Holzgerät und beginnt zu weben, indem er jedes zweite Fach von Hand öffnet. Die jeweils darauffolgenden Fächer werden durch Einschieben eines Trennstabes in die Kette automatisch vorgebildet. Auf den Arbeitsfaden werden weiße Glasperlen aufgezogen. Dieser wird durch das geöffnete Fach geschoben und zwischen den Kettfäden geordnet. Nach Fertigstellung bindet sich Salap die Stirnbinde um.
    Abstract: Salap, a man from Malingdam/Imarin village, demonstrates the making of a head-band in plait weaving technique. He stretches the warp over a wooden frame and starts weaving, opening every alternate shed by hand. The counter sheds are formed automatically by insertion of a separating stick. The result is a woven band with a design of glass beads. Salap works in company with other men engaged in other things. Head-bands of this kind are worn by men as festive ornament.

    Abstract: Auf einem senkrecht stehenden Webrahmen wird Yakhaargarn in zweiebiger Kette gespannt. Nach Einsetzen der Trennstäbe wird der Litzenstab angeschlungen und fixiert. Durch wechselnden Gebrauch verschiedener naturfarbener Schüsse entsteht ein Doppelteppich in Streifenmuster.
    Abstract: On a vertical loom the threads of yak hair are stretched in a double-rowed warp, the dividing staffs are inserted, the heddle staff is twisted in and fixed. By an alternating use of various self-coloured weft threads a triped pattern is woven. Later the warp shiner is inserted, the warp is pulled and stretched again. When the weaving is finished, the loops of the warp are untied from the frame. The textile is cut up in the middle, resulting in two rugs.

Attaching the warp threads to the heddles and fixing the heddles by means of drawcords to both arms of a lever-like longitudinal rod. By alternate raising and lowering the shed is formed. Light-coloured, red and black woollen threads are inserted. The result is a weft-faced rib weave with horizontal stripes. The finished carpet is cut from the loom and the loom is removed.

Then follow winnowing and sifting, the timeconsuming, complicated cleaning process, removal of the straw, the filling of the wheat into sacks (which follows a pattern of rites and customs), and transport.

    Abstract: Männer des Dorfes Iskatul arbeiten in Gemeinschaftsarbeit an einer vom Hochwasser bedrohten Brücke: Errichten der Uferpfeiler, Bau eines Balkengerüstes (Auflage für die Balken). Die Konstruktionsteile beider Uferseiten werden durch vier Balken miteinander verbunden und mit Bohlen abgedeckt.
    Abstract: The flood threatened bridge is partly torn down and built up again by mutual assistance of the men of the village. On one of the river banks the pole has to be newly assembled. Beams are used to build up the scaffolding. Stones and twigs are used to fill the frame-work. Owing to this the beams, overlapping each other with the tips, are able to over-bridge the river. The construction can then be connected by four beams to the corresponding ones on the other bank. After the beams have been secured by planks the bridge is ready for use.
