    Abstract: Der Film befaßt sich mit der Volksgruppe der Miao (Meng) und ihren Kindern, die in den Vororten Kunmings leben. Während ihre Eltern als Schuhputzer in der Provinzhauptstadt Yunnans arbeiten, wächst die zweite Migrantengeneration aus der benachbarten Guizhou-Provinz in einer Umgebung auf, die noch Schutz in Ritualen und Bräuchen sucht.
    Abstract: The film focuses on a Miao (Meng, Mhong or Hmong) community and their children living in the suburbs of Kunming City. As their parents work as shoe polishers in the provincial capital of Yunnan, the second generation of migrants from neighbouring Guizhou Province grows up in an environment that requires some rituals and customs as protection.

    Abstract: Homeless men and women in downtown Hamburg were filmed over a six-month period of ethnographic fieldwork. While homeless are often represented as outcasts of society, this film shows the construction of intricate social networks, with alliances and sanctions, not unlike those of the working and consuming public that occupies Hamburg's central business district during daytime. The camera offers a view of daily routines and work, as well as leisure time which is spent socializing on a public square equipped with a container for luggage. Intimately, and with sometimes disenchanted frankness the protagonists reflect on the circumstances of their situation between romance and tragedy, past disappointments and future ambitions.

    Abstract: In der Han-Mythologie symbolisiert der Drache die Macht, da er über das Element des Wassers und damit über den Ausgang der Ernte, die Gesundheit und den Wohlstand regiert. Seine Ausbrüche können durch extreme Fluten oder Dürre alles vernichten. Der Daban-Brunnen am Rande Jianshuis stammt noch aus der Zeit der Ming-Dynastie. Obwohl es Leitungswasser gibt, bevorzugen die Menschen das Brunnenwasser und pflegen ihre Rituale zu Ehren des Drachenkönigs.
    Abstract: In Han myth the dragon symbolizes power as he rules over the element water, i.e. the outcome of the next harvest, peoples' health and wealth. His temper can ruin everything through extreme floods or draught. The Daban Well in the outskirts of Jianshui dates back to the Ming Dynasty, and although tap water is available, people prefer the well's water and perform rituals in honor of the Dragon King.

The Daisai have lived on the upper reaches of the Red River at the foot of Ailiao Mountain for generations. Here, teeth dying is still practiced by the women, while modernization and development bring about challenges threatening their traditions.

    Abstract: The income gap between rural and urban communities is extreme, and in Yunnan Province causes growing migration to its capital Kunming. With their home-made pushcarts street peddlers are considered a threat to the city's image building. Constantly on the run, the peddlers themselves would prefer clear regulations allowing a space for them to sell their food, and have an income.

Die Kinder, die im Alter ab 4 Jahren trainieren, sind nicht nur Han-Chinesen, sondern auch Bai, Yi, Naxi, Tibeter und Dai. Neben dem täglichen Training steht das nächtliche Studium.
    Abstract: The Yunnan Acrobatic Troupe of China based in Kunming, Yunnan Province, was set up by the government in 1956. It is now a state-run institute with 22 coaches, 38 students and professional actors. The students who start their training as early as at the age of 4 are not just Han Chinese , but also Bai, Yi, Naxi, Tibetan, Dai etc., they are enrolled full-time, i.e. physical training during the day and study at night.

    Abstract: Dao Yaodong alias "Mr. Cool" ist ein junger Huayao Dai aus dem Kreis Xinping in der Provinz Yunnan. Modernisierung und Medien, insbesondere Fernsehen und Video, aber auch die neue Infrastruktur für die Arbeiter in der nahe gelegenen Zuckerfabrik lassen neue Visionen entstehen. Während sich die Alten auf vergangene Tugenden berufen, ist "Mr. Cool" dabei, sein bäuerliches Leben aufzugeben, so wie es sein älterer Bruder getan hat.
    Abstract: Dao Yaodong alias Mr. Cool is a young Huayao Dai (Thai) living in Xinping County, Yunnan Province. Modernisation and the media, especially television and VCDs, as well as the infrastructure for the workers of the sugar cane factory nearby his village have resulted in new visions. While the elders are recalling past virtues, Mr. Cool is preparing to leave his life as a farmer, like his elder brother did.

Während Obdachlose zumeist als gesellschaftliche Randgruppe gelten, verweist der Film auf ihr kompliziertes soziales Netzwerk, ähnlich denen der arbeitenden und konsumierenden Öffentlichkeit. Die Kamera erlaubt einen Blick auf den Alltag der Obdachlosen, ihre Geselligkeit, das Trinken und wechselseitige Frotzeln. Sie trösten und unterstützen sich gegenseitig. Mit teilweise ernüchternder Ehrlichkeit reflektieren die Protagonisten ihre Situation zwischen Romantik und Tragödie, vergangenen Enttäuschungen und Zukunftsplänen.

    Abstract: Nach 85jährigem Guerillakrieg gegen die britische Sklavenhaltergesellschaft schlossen die 'Maroons' genannten schwarzen Freiheitskämpfer Jamaikas 1739 einen Friedensvertrag mit der Kolonialmacht. Seit damals leben sie als weitgehend unabhängige Gesellschaften in ihren Enklaven. Der Film dokumentiert diese Maroon-Kultur, die in ihren Grundzügen auf afrikanischen Traditionen aufbaut.
    Abstract: In 1739 the devastating war between the first black freedom fighters in the "New World" against the British slaveholders came to an end with the signing of a peace treaty, which guaranteed autonony and independence to the the Maroons of Jamaica. They fought hard to defend their status of independent societies since then. The film introduces the culture of the Maroons which is rooted in African traditions.

    Abstract: Der Film portraitiert ein katholisches Dorf im Oldenburger Münsterland (Niedersachsen) aus Anlaß der Primizfeier des 28jährigen Hagstedters Hermann Backhaus. Zwei Wochen nach seiner Priesterweihe in Rom feiert ganz Hagstedt seine erste Messe, die sog. Primiz, in seinem Heimatdorf. Der Film interpretiert dies als ein "rite de passage", der Hermanns Stellung im Dorf und seine Beziehung zu den Bewohnern verändert. Neben den Feierlichkeiten werden auch die umfangreichen Vorbereitungen und die Arbeitsteilung in der dörflichen Nachbarschaft dokumentiert. Da die Menschen in Hagstedt Plattdeutsch sprechen, ist der Film mit deutschen Untertiteln versehen.
    Abstract: Hagstedt - a little farming community situated in a catholic enclave in Lower Saxony/Germany is preparing for a feast: one of the village's sons, 28-year-old Hermann Backhaus, was ordained as a priest in Rome. Now he will come home to celebrate his first mass in his parish. Weeks before this event the villagers assemble in order to get greenery, make paper roses and wreaths and decorate their village. The film follows these preparations that are organized due to a complicated system of neighbourhoods and ends with the first mass, that - as a 'rite de passage' - changes Hermann from being the 'nice boy from next door' to a man who now represents a profession of prestige and dignity.

    Abstract: Über Generationen ist das volksmedizinische Wissen in einer Sanifamilie weitergegeben worden, die nahe des Steinwaldes von Yunnan lebt. Als lokale Spezialisten für Knochenerkrankungen nutzt diese Familie vor allem einheimische Heilkräuter, aber auch etwas "westliche Medizin".
    Abstract: The transmission of indigenous medical knowledge in a Sani family living close to the Stone Forest in Yunnan has been passed on through six generations. As specialists for bone diseases in the area, this family mainly uses indigenous herbs, but also some "Western medicine".

    Abstract: Das Dorf Xinren mausert sich zu einer touristischen Attraktion. Die Sani sehen sich dabei verschiedensten Interessen ausgesetzt: die Dorfführer wollen ihren Ort in ein möglichst gutes Licht stellen, Journalisten sehen den Zwiespalt zwischen Objekt und Subjekt, und Wissenschaftler möchten die traditionelle Kultur der Sani erhalten. Allein die Touristen kommen und haben ihren Spaß an Folklore und Exotik.
    Abstract: Xinren Village undergoes a period of transition to become a model tourist village. The Sani people experience an interest of various stakeholders: the village leaders want to produce the best image possible, journalists find it hard to treat the object as subject, researchers would like to conserve the Sani culture, while tourists come for fun and in admiration of the exotic.
