    Abstract: Filmmaker Dai Sil Kim-Gibson explores the aftermath of the 1992 LA Civil Unrest in her film WET SAND. Her groundbreaking 1993 documentary SA-I-GU stands as one of the crucial texts to offer a Korean American perspective on the events surrounding the Los Angeles riots – an invaluable discussion tool for promoting better understanding of the socio-political factors that played into one of the grimmest moments in United States race relations. With WET SAND, Kim-Gibson revisits Los Angeles to learn what changes have occurred since then, only to discover that living conditions have deteriorated and that few remedies have been administered to the communities most stricken. Through interviews with a multi-ethnic set of first-hand witnesses, this essential follow-up probes deeper into the racial and economic issues that not only shaped the climate of 1992 Los Angeles, but continue to affect all Americans today.

    Abstract: In Spring 2004, Mohd Shirvani decided to answer an old question in his mind - What should I do if I, as a film director, would become blind? I was wondering if I could keep making films. This film has been made by a number of blind women filmmakers to answer that question. I taught them how to narrate their own stories through film language with small digital cameras and they also taught me how to see the world with my third eye on my forehead. The result of this experience is a feature episodic documentary 7 Blind Female Filmmakers.

One such program, 'Special Registration,' required male non-citizens – as young as the age of 16 and from 25 countries – to register with the U.S. government and resulted in the discriminatory deportation of many. This film introduces Navila – an honors student who fought to release her father from detention; Sarfaraz – a popular basketball player who confronts pending deportation; and Hager – a young woman who faces prejudice and is spurred into activism as a result.

    Abstract: In 1998, the discovery of a gold mine in the village of V3 Dimouon in the province of Loba, Burkina Faso, initiated a veritable "gold rush". In the village, where Mossi and Dagara farmers co-reside, the arrival of thousands of gold-diggers led to the creation of a new settlement named "Sanmatenga", which in Mooré means "land of gold". The village people as well as the representative of the gold-diggers recount the discovery of the gold vein. The film follows the different steps of exploiting the gold and shows everyday life in Sanmatenga.

    Abstract: In February 1991 caravans of the Kel Gress and the Buzu travel to Fachi (Rep. Niger, Sahel zone). Only the Buzu-Caravan takes the exhausting way further on through the Ténéré desert to the oasis Bilma, in order to barter their sorghum for salt and dates. After a 5-days stop in Bilma, they return to their home village Galé near Keita.

Nach einem fünftägigen Aufenthalt in Bilma zieht die Karawane wieder zurück zu ihrem Heimatdorf Galé bei Keita.

    Abstract: The film describes the research of africanist Katrin Pfeiffer in Gambia, West Africa, where she records Mandinka fairy tales and other oral traditions and transcribes them with the help of local assistants. Some of the tales are narrated and a trip of the film team together with the researcher is described, where recordings are carried out.

    Abstract: Als in den 1970er Jahren der Seespiegel des Tschadsees sank, wurde am nigerianischen Ufer ein breiter Streifen fruchtbaren Landes vom Wasser freigegeben. Auf dem ehemaligen Seeboden entstanden zahlreiche Dörfer. Siedler unterschiedlicher Herkunft ließen sich hier nieder. In der trockenen Sahelzone verspricht das Wasser des Tschadsees Fischern, Bauern und Händlern ein ganzjähriges Einkommen. Während manche noch heute vom schnellen Geld träumen, haben sich andere am Tschadsee eine sichere Existenz aufgebaut. Der Film zeigt das Alltagsleben in zwei Tschadseedörfern. In Zentrum stehen vier Unternehmer - zwei Frauen und zwei Männer, die auf je unterschiedliche Weise erfolgreich wirtschaften.
    Abstract: When the level of Lake Chad sank during the 1970s, a wide strip of fertile land was exposed on the Nigerian shore. A considerable number of villages sprang up on the banks of the former lake and peoples of various origins settled there. In the dry Sahel zone the waters of Lake Chad offer fishermen, farmers and tradesmen the prospect of a good income the whole year round. While some still only dream of making easy money, others have laid the foundations of a secure livelihood. The film shows daily life in two villages on the shores of Lake Chad, focussing on four entrepreneurs - two women and two men - each one successfully conducting business in his or her own way.

    Abstract: The film focuses on peace-making efforts by seven different ethnic groups in Southern Ethiopia to end years of war between each other. Delegations of elders come together to jointly curse war, bless peace and never to fight with one another again. Curses are uttered as spears are blunted with stones and then carried to a termite mound to be broken and left there for the ants to devour. After the instruments of war are destroyed, tools of peace are given to all participants. Holding their tools of peace, the elders chant in union, calling forth the peace they desire.

    Abstract: Duka, verheiratet und Mutter von 5 Kindern, lebt in Hamar in Süd-Äthiopien. Seit ihr Ehemann eine junge und hübsche zweite Ehefrau geheiratet hat, ist Duka verunsichert. Zwar ist es in Hamar erlaubt, mehr als eine Ehefrau zu haben, aber nur selten heiraten Männer tatsächlich mehr als eine Frau. Duka fragt sich, ob ihr Mann sie zu alt findet oder er von ihrer chronischen Malaria abgestoßen ist. Mit der neuen Frau kann Duka wenig anfangen: sie ist still und drückt selten ihre Gefühle aus, außer wenn sie in Wut gerät. Und zu alledem kommt hinzu, daß Dukas Schwiegermutter Ärger macht. Auf intime Weise schildert der Film das Familiendrama um Duka, das in der Geburt des ersten Kindes der zweiten Frau und in einem Streit seine Höhepunkte hat, bei dem neun Monate später Dukas Schwiegermutter mit ihrem Sohn in Konflikt gerät, was schließlich zum Bau eines zweiten Hauses führt.     Abstract: Duka, a married woman and mother of five young children, lives in Hamar, Southern Ethiopia. Ever since her husband married a beautiful and young second wife, Duka has been in a state of emotional turmoil. Among the Hamar, men are allowed to marry more than one wife, but only a few men ever do so. Duka wonders why her husband married again; did he find her too old, or was he repelled by her chronic malaria? Also, she doesn't know what to make of the new wife who is silent and never expresses her feelings except in rage? And on top of this, her mother-in-law keeps making trouble. Personal and intimate, the film follows the drama of this family in crisis, the high points of which are the birth of the new wife's first child, and nine months later, a heated dispute between the mother-in-law and her son, which leads to the building of a new house. Duka, her husband, her mother-in-law and the second wife voice their different points of view as events proceed and the crisis finally gets resolved.

    Abstract: When Ruo Ma Was Seventeen illustrates the perspectives and fantasies of young people towards love. Ruo Ma, a girl from the Xiani tribe, lives with her grandmother since childhood. Fantasising about the world outside, Ruo Ma wants to visit the city but has no money. She meets Ming, a photographer, who helps her earn money by getting her to pose in her tribal costume with the tourists. But soon Ming has to leave.     Abstract: The last orthodox synagogue in Makó was renewed and inaugurated in 2002. The little temple, as they call it, is more than a hundred years old and represents the link between the Jews who emigrated from this town in the south-eastern part of Hungary. The various members of the community have built new lives elsewhere whilst holding on to the values of their cultural past. Scenes were shot on location in Israel, United Kingdom and the United States portraying the lives of the Jewish members of the ex community. The mood ranges from a poignant visit to the grave of the last Makó rabbi to a spirited traditional Chasidic wedding in Jerusalem; Hanukah in London, New York and Mako.

    Abstract: The film, being part of the continued effort of IWF to contribute video productions to the history of anthropology like the preceding film on Sir Raymond Firth, is a portrait of the Norwegian anthropologist Fredrik Barth, one of the most important contemporary representatives of his discipline whose reputation both as a fieldworker and a theoretician has been renowned for more than four decades. Barth carried out fieldwork in the Sudan, in Iran, Oman, Pakistan, New Guinea, Bali and Bhutan. In the film, he talks, at times together with his wife Unni Wikan, to Peter Loizos and also to Lone Abenth-Sperschneider on his personal life and academic career, the importance of his fieldwork for his theoretical findings, the development of Norwegian anthropology, his cooperation with Unni Wikan and many other topics of interest for anthropologists. Impressions from teaching students in Bergen and lecturing at the Museum of Ethnography in Oslo, as well as glimpses of his personal environment in Oslo round off the film to a vivid portrait of a remarkable anthropologist.

    Abstract: This eye-opening documentary follows four Chinese families as they step into the 21st century. Working without official permits, the filmmakers used compact digital video gear to record intimate portraits of ordinary people living in tumultuous times, capturing candid and sometimes emotional interviews. Families are small – one child in the city, two in the country – so children hold center stage. Veterans of the Cultural Revolution are saving up to send their son to business school. Another couple, whose son is a prize law student, glows with satisfaction. To insure his children's future, a peasant leaves his remote village to work in the quasi-legal urban job market. A farm family near Shanghai feels manhandled by the privatizing economy; they sacrifice to send their daughter to high school. CHINA 21 introduces otherwise anonymous people whose spark and initiative are changing their country.

    Abstract: During her summer vacation, Dawa returned to Lhasa to see her grandparents. Unfortunately her grandfather was ill and dying. During this time, her grandmother, Yixi Zhuoma, told Dawa her love stories with three men. The first man in Yixi's life was Jiacuo, a strong mule boy from Kangba. At the same time Gongsa, the young master of Luoga Garden, had fallen in love with Yixi. Jiacuo was not persuaded and eloped with Yixi and married her. Their marriage and Jiacuo's great energy brought Yixi a very happy and romantic time in her life. However, as a mule boy, Jiacuo was used to an unstable lifestyle, which drove Yixi back to Gongsa. During the 1950s, Gongsa fled with the Dalai Lama and took Yixi's youngest son with him, asserting that the son was his. In the meantime, Jiacuo could not tolerate Yixi's betrayal and decided to return to his hometown, Kongba, with his oldest daughter. Several years later, when Yixi got the news that Jiacuo was seriously ill, she immediately decided to begin her difficult and dangerous journey searching for her husband. During that difficult time, she met her old friend Songqiu Lama, who was her third man as well as her forever lover in her life. In their youth, they used to spend a lot of time together, and Songqiu taught Yixi how to write and sing. Unfortunately, they were separated after Songqiu became a monk. With the coming of the Cultural Revolution, Songqiu was forced to leave his temple and lived as an ordinary man again. This enabled him to accompany Yixi to continue her difficult journey. He also encouraged Yixi to return to her husband and he would like to go back to being a Lama again. Dawa sets out to find these men. Awards/Festivals: Won Golden Rooster for Best Music, Special Jury Prize for Acting and Directing, Nominated for Golden Rooster for Best Actress, Best Film, Best Screenplay 2000; Won Film of Merit and Best Director, Shanghai Film Critics Award 2000; Interfaith Award, St. Louis International Film Festival 2001.
