    Abstract: The book is a critical examination of affirmative action, a form of preferential development often used to address the situation of disadvantaged groups. It uses a trans-global approach, as opposed to the comparative approach, to examine the relationship between affirmative action, ethnic conflict and the role of the state in Fiji, Malaysia and South Africa. While affirmative action has noble goals, there are often intervening political and ideological factors in the form of ethno-nationalism and elite interests, amongst others, which potentially undermine fair distribution of affirmative action resources. The book examines the affirmative action philosophies and programs of the three countries and raises pertinent questions about whether affirmative action has led to equality, social justice, harmony and political stability and explores future possibilities

    Abstract: This volume is a unique contribution to the exploration of a new perspective in the study of well-being, which tries to overcome the quantification bias by creating an account of 'the good life' in a specific place. Rather than numbers, this research focuses on local narratives, emphasising the urgent need to include a wider range of methodological approaches when engaging with well-being. The volume demonstrates through the Bolivian case study the value of qualitative research for well-being studies. It shows the potential to integrate predominant quantitative data with qualitative outcomes, such as those emerging through ethnography. It is aimed at academics, researchers and students in well-being/quality of life studies, as well as audiences in the non-profit, governmental and policy in the non-profit, governmental and policy sectors. The book provides new perspectives in achieving better indicators of well-being and quality-of-life.

    Abstract: The advent of industrial regulation by tribunal came close to the turn of the century. Wages boards began in Victoria in 1896 and courts of arbitration in 1900. The first day of the new century was also the first day of the Commonwealth of Australia, endowed with a Parliament that was empowered to institute its chosen models of conciliation and arbitration for the prevention and settlement of interstate industrial disputes. This book is a study of the operation of conciliation and arbitration, especially by the Commonwealth Court of Conciliation and Arbitration, from the inception of the system until World War II. It is not, however, a general history of conciliation and arbitration. It does not, for example, deal with the successes and failures of the tribunals in preventing strikes and lockouts; or with the manifold legal issues to which the system gave rise, unless they affected significantly the tribunals' exercise of their power to fix wages and conditions. Rather, it is about fixing the terms of employment; and it attempts to set the tribunals' performance in an economic context. It is about 'wage policy', if the term is interpreted broadly enough to include both prescribed wages and other factors that affect the cost of labour, including working hours and leave

    Abstract: Most members of the Stolen Generations had white fathers or grandfathers. Who were these white men? This book analyses the stories of white fathers, men who were positioned as key players in the plans to assimilate Aboriginal people by 'breeding out the colour'. The policy was an cruel failure. It conflated skin colour with culture and assumed that Aboriginal women and their children would acquiesce to produce 'future whites'. It also assumed that white men would comply as ready appendages, administering 'whiteness' through marriage or white sperm. This book attempts to put textual flesh on the bodies of these white fathers, and in doing so, builds on and complicates the view of white fathers in this history, and the histories of whiteness to which they are biopolitically related

    Abstract: Nationale Identitat ist ein schillernder Begriff. Mit ihm werden sowohl individuelle und kollektive Selbst- und Fremdbilder als auch vermeintliche und tatsachliche Gemeinsamkeiten beschrieben. Er durchdringt auf vielerlei Weise das Denken und Handeln im sozialen Kontext und ist zugleich doch wissenschaftlich schwer zu fassen. Michael Klein verfolgt das Ziel, die nationale Identitat der Deutschen am Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts aus einer soziologischen Perspektive zu skizzieren. Um die vielfaltigen Facetten des Konzepts nationaler Identitat abzubilden, fuhrt er hierfur drei unterschiedliche theoretische Zugange zusammen. Neben dem nationalen Commitment der Deutschen stehen die sozialen Grenzkonstruktionen und die vorherrschenden Wertorientierungen im Fokus des Forschungsprogramms.     Abstract: " Anthropologists need history to understand how the past has shaped the present. Historians need anthropology to help them interpret the past. Where anthropologists' and historians' needs intersect is ethnohistory. The contributors to this volume have been inspired in large part by the teaching and writing of distinguished ethnohistorian Raymond J. DeMallie, whose exemplary combination of ethnographic and archival research demonstrates the ways anthropology and history can work together to create an understanding of the past and the present. Transforming Ethnohistories comprises ten new avenues of ethnohistorical research ranging in topic from fiddling performances to environmental disturbance and spanning places from North Carolina to the Yukon. The authors seek to understand communities by finding and interpreting their stories in a variety of different texts, some of which lie outside academic understanding and research methodology. It is exactly those stories, conventionally labeled "myths" or "oral tradition," that ethnohistorians demand we pay attention to. Although historians cannot see or talk to their informants as anthropologists do, both anthropologists and historians can listen to oral histories and written documents for the essential stories they contain. The essays assembled here use DeMallie's approach to contribute to the history and anthropology of Native North America and address issues of literary criticism and contexts, sociolinguistics, performance theory, identity and historical change, historical and anthropological methods and theory, and the interpretation of histories, cultures, and stories. Debates over the legitimacy of ethnohistory as a specialization have led some scholars to declare its decline.     Abstract: Kärnten wird in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Literatur als „Sonderfall" der österreichischen Zeitgeschichte beschrieben; der Volksgruppenkonflikt zwischen der slowenischsprachigen Minderheit und der deutschsprachigen Mehrheit, der politische Erfolg des „Dritten Lagers" und eine politische Kultur, die mit Korruptionsskandalen, Ausgrenzung von Fremden und Diffamierung in Zusammenhang gebracht wird, ist kennzeichnend. Christian Dorner-Hörig untersucht, auf welche Weise diese Besonderheiten mit der Soziogenese und Psychogenese Kärntens zusammenhängen. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass die Etablierung eines ständischen Patrimonialismus zum Beginn der Neuzeit den Zugriff der Zentralgewalt auf die regionale Integrationsebene Kärnten behinderte. Die damit verbundene Fragmentierung des Landes in kleinere Herrschafts- und Verwaltungseinheiten begünstigte den Erhalt segmentär gefasster Figurationen ebenso wie die Herausbildung zweier in sich geschlossener Wir-Gruppen, die sich zunehmend in einer emotional aufgeladenen Konfliktspirale gegenüberstanden.

    Abstract: ​Die Eurokrise ist eine der schwersten Krisen der EU seit ihrer Gründung. Bei ihrer Lösung geht es nicht allein um den Erfolg von konkreten wirtschaftspolitischen Maßnahmen, sondern um den Zusammenhalt zwischen den Bürgern der verschiedenen Mitgliedsländer. Jürgen Gerhards und Holger Lengfeld entwickeln ein Konzept einer sozial integrierten europäischen Gesellschaft, das auf der Annahme beruht, dass sich die EU-Bürger unabhängig von ihrer jeweils konkreten nationalen Herkunft als Gleiche anerkennen. Anhand von Daten einer Umfrage aus vier Ländern prüfen sie, in welchem Maße die Europäer diese Idee einer europäisierten Chancengleichheit unterstützen oder ob sie weiterhin einem nationalstaatlich geschlossenen Gleichheitskonzept anhängen. Die empirischen Befunde der Studie stimmen optimistisch: Die kulturellen Grundlagen für ein sozial integriertes Europa scheinen gegeben zu sein, da sich die Bürger der Europäischen Union in hohem Maße als Gleiche anerkennen, sich kaum gesellschaftliche Konfliktlinien um die Zubilligung gleicher Rechte für Bürger aus anderen EU-Ländern zeigen und die Menschen sich auch in der Alltagspraxis weitgehend an diesen Werten orientieren.

    Abstract: This work examines mortality among young children in the period from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. It does so using several types and sources of information from the census unit England and Wales, and from Ireland. The sources of information used in this study include memoirs, diaries, poems, church records and numerical accounts. They offer descriptions of the quality of life and child mortality over the three centuries under study. Additional sources for the nineteenth century are two census-derived numerical indexes of the quality of life. They are the VICQUAL index for England and Wales, and the QUALEIRE index for Ireland. Statistical procedures have been applied to the numbers provided by the sources with the aim to identify effects of and associations between such variables as gender, age, and social background. The book examines the results to consider the impact of children's deaths upon parents and families, and concludes that there are differences and continuities across the centuries.

    Abstract: We quantify the extent to which public-sector employment crowds out private-sector employment using specially assembled datasets for a large cross-section of developing and advanced countries, and discuss the implications for countries in the Middle East, North Africa, Caucasus and Central Asia. These countries simultaneously display high unemployment rates, low private-sector employment rates and high proportions of government-sector employment. Regressions of either private-sector employment rates or unemployment rates on two measures of public-sector employment point to full crowding out. This means that high rates of public employment, which incur substantial fiscal costs, have a large negative impact on private employment rates and do not reduce overall unemployment rates.
