    Description / Table of Contents: Am Kreuzungspunkt der Diskurse um Nation und Raum entstanden Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts Konzepte von Grenzen, die keine Linien mehr waren, sondern Räume. Dies war die Grundlage eines Raumbildes, das Deutschland nicht nur über seine Staats-, sondern auch über die deutsche Sprachgrenze hinaus vergrößerte. Der Band untersucht diese Transformation der Grenzen am Beispiel der deutschen Westgrenze. Anknüpfend an den antifranzösischen Nationsentwurf der Politischen Romantik und die wissenschaftliche Bestimmung der westlichen Sprachgrenze werden die Konzepte »Westmark«, »Westland« und »Westraum« rekonstruiert. Von den alldeutschen, jungkonservativen und nationalsozialistischen Diskursgemeinschaften geprägt, bezeichneten diese einen deutschen Grenzraum, der von der Kanal- und Nordseeküste bis zu den französischen Alpen und zur Rhône reichte, zugleich jedoch in hohem Maße symbolisch und ideologisch aufgeladen war. Als Gegenstück zum »Ostland« wurde dieses Raumkonstrukt zum Leitbild deutscher Kriegsziel- und Germanisierungspolitik und zu einem Symbolraum des »Neuen Europa« der SS.

Lieba Faier investigates how Filipina women who emigrated to rural Japan to work in hostess bars--where initially they were widely disparaged as prostitutes and foreigners--came to be identified by the local residents as "ideal, traditional Japanese brides." Intimate Encounters, an ethnography of cultural encounters, unravels this paradox by examining the everyday relational dynamics that drive these interactions. Faier remaps Japan, the Philippines, and the United States into what she terms a "zone of encounters," showing how the meanings of Filipino and Japanese culture and identity are transformed and how these changes are accomplished through ordinary interpersonal exchanges. Intimate Encounters provides an insightful new perspective from which to reconsider national subjectivities amid the increasing pressures of globalization, thereby broadening and deepening our understanding of the larger issues of migration and disapora. --From publisher's description

    Abstract: Auf einen Begriff scheint 'Heimat' nicht zu bringen zu sein. Vielmehr stellt sich Unschärfe oder Mehrdeutigkeit ein. Womöglich liegt in der Offenheit und begrifflichen Widerständigkeit gerade der Reiz, das Potenzial, aber auch die Brisanz dieses streitbaren wie umstrittenen Konzepts.Eine Öffnung der 'Heimat' hin zu den Anforderungen von Moderne und Globalisierungen lässt sich ebenso konstatieren wie die zum Teil fatalen Folgen von Ausschließung und Abgrenzung, für die der Begriff auch steht.Heimaten gewinnen ihre Plausibilität aus je spezifischen historischen Umständen. Brüche, Transformationen, Aufmerksamkeitsverschiebungen und Neuakzentuierungen, die das Konzept seit etwa 1800 in zunehmendem Maße geprägt haben, lassen Konjunkturen erkennen. Diese sind meist - in den Koordinaten von Raum, Zeit und Identität - Protokolle der Verunsicherung oder des Verlusts. Heimat fungiert dann gleichermaßen als Sehnsuchtsraum und Ordnungsentwurf.Der Band versteht sich nicht als ein weiterer Versuch, Heimat zu definieren, sondern versammelt Studien aus Literatur-, Film- und Geschichtswissenschaft, die vor allem der Frage nachgehen, wo, wann und wie Heimat thematisiert und konzeptualisiert wurde und wird. Es wird also an einzelnen Lektüren und Überlegungen erprobt, was als eine historische Perspektive notwendiger Impuls für eine Beschäftigung mit Heimat sein könnte

    Abstract: Berlin besitzt die größte und facettenreichste jüdische Gemeinschaft Deutschlands. Erstmals seit 1945 haben sich hier lebende Juden in den letzten Jahren wieder auf eine dauerhafte Existenz eingerichtet. Vor diesem Hintergrund steht die Zunahme kultureller Vielfalt insbesondere außerhalb der Berliner Gemeinde und die innerjüdische Bewertung dieser Entwicklung im Zentrum der kultursoziologisch verorteten Grundlagenarbeit. Außerdem werden - als ein neu gewonnener Forschungsblick - Fragen nach jüdischen Umgangsweisen mit Antisemitismus und philosemitischen Hypes behandelt sowie unterschiedlichste neuere jüdische Gruppenaktivitäten eingehend beleuchtet. Ausführliche Interviews mit engagierten Jüdinnen und Juden bilden die empirische Basis der Untersuchung. Zentrale Befunde der Studie bestehen in innerjüdischen Pluralisierungstendenzen sowie in wachsendem jüdischen Selbstbewusstsein nach außen
