Abstract: Main description: Die mediale Kommunikation wird im "Optischen Zeitalter" bzw. im Zeichen der "Bilderflut" beherrscht von den Text-Bild-Medien (Zeitung, Zeitschrift, Buch, Plakat, Comics und anderen Heftchen) sowie den Bild-Text-Medien (Film, Fernsehen, Videoclip, Internet). Jahrhundert beleuchtet.
Abstract: Main description: Today, in a 'Visual Age' 'inundated' by images, media communication is dominated by the text-picture media (newspapers, magazines, books, posters, comics, etc.) and the picture-text media (films, TV, video clips, Internet). In these media, the attempt is made to establish a typical visual idiom alongside the text, a visual Esperanto or accumulation of 'visiotypes' designed as a guarantee of universal comprehensibility. Hence there is a need for an approach providing access to the images, texts and text-picture combinations, the theories about them in currency, and the central realizations of these theories in the praxis of the said media. The book sets out to provide such access, casting light in its later chapters on the relationship between language and art in the 20th century.

Abstract: "Mediated Associations builds on current debates over the relationship between society and the cinema, and extends the critical dialogue that has been emerging between cinematic concepts and methods of social analysis. Drawing from a broad range of philosophical, sociological, cultural, media, and cinema theorists, Daniel O'Connor develops a unique conception of the power of cinematic apparatuses. He expands our understanding of how cinema effectively resonates with its viewers and draws our attention to the constitution and control of aesthetic-cinematic communities." "Rather than focusing on the abstract and individualizing character of cinema, Mediated Associations elucidates the collective character of cinematic objects. O'Connor argues that social theory must come to terms with the new mobilities and speed of cinema, and the various ways in which the affect - as a virtual moment of collective experience - is inserted into the flow of movement and structures cinematic events. In considering the primacy of the affect to cinematic forms of power, he examines the way in which cinema controls our associations, reconstituting our manners and habits of sociality in subtle and complex ways."--Jacket

Abstract: Revealing Male Bodies is the first scholarly collection to directly confront male lived experience. There has been an explosion of work in men's studies, masculinity issues, and male sexuality, in addition to a growing literature exploring female embodiment. Missing from the current literature, however, is a sustained analysis of the phenomenology of male-gendered bodies. Revealing Male Bodies addresses this omission by examining how male bodies are physically and experientially constituted by the economi

Abstract: Reinventing the Male Homosexual: The Rhetoric and Power of the Gay Gene examines the assumption that embracing the biological research on homosexuality is a viable political strategy for the gay rights movement. The biological argument for gay rights is treated as a "bio-rhetoric," a means of incorporating scientific research into public debates. The book investigates the biological research on which this gay rights argument is based, and explores how male homosexuality is conceptualized in the fields of

Abstract: Having achieved its initial goals in the war on terrorism, the United States is now in a second, more complex phase of the campaign. This monograph reviews events since the attacks of September 11, 2001, and discusses the current state of the al Qaeda organization and the kinds of actions that can be expected of it in the foreseeable future. Because al Qaeda constitutes the most serious immediate threat to the security of the United States, it is imperative that the campaign against terrorism remain focused and pragmatic. This monograph outlines and describes the essential, central elements that must be emphasized in this campaign, the ultimate aim of which is the destruction of a terrorist enterprise that threatens American security and, by extension, the security of the world

Abstract: An analysis of the political use of the Internet by Chinese dissidents, both in the PRC and abroad, and the counterstrategies that Beijing has employed to prevent or minimize its impact. Although PRC officials have responded to the increased use of the Internet with predominantly traditional measures, they have been relatively successful. Abstract: Annotation
Abstract: This book is an ethnographic study of a comprehensive school in the south of England. It explores the views of teachers, Asian parents and their children concerning education and schooling. Young people between the ages of 13 and 18 were studied at home and at school and their experiences form the main focus of the study. The experiences of fifty Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Indian families - mostly of Muslim faith - are studied with a view to discovering what parents expect from their children's school and how the teachers perceive their own role with regard to their students. These young people are the first generation of Asians to be educated in Britain. Their location in terms of their social class positions, gender and ethnicity are inextricably bound together. They describe how they see their past and their future. This is the first study to take account of boys andgirls in order to capture the complexity of their lived experiences

Abstract: Test-based accountability systems that attach high stakes to standardized test results in the form of rewards and sanctions have raised a number of issues for those responsible for educational assessment and accountability. Do these high-stakes tests measure student achievement accurately? How can policymakers and educators attach the right consequences to the results of these tests? What kinds of educational tradeoffs do these testing policies introduce? This book was written in response to school policymaking's growing emphasis on high-stakes testing. It addresses several key areas, including how the tests are used within these systems, how to evaluate the technical quality and trustworthiness of the tests, how test-based accountability affects the practices of teachers and schools, and what effect political considerations have on the policy debate. The authors also provide some recommendations for developing more-effective test-based accountability systems

Abstract: Main description: The study shows that, contrary to received thinking on the point, intercultural communication is not necessarily problematic. Micro-analyses of authentic dissent sequences show that, despite their national, cultural, and linguistic differences, participants in German-Danish negotiations are capable of mastering even potentially problematic sequences. This points the necessity for a more differentiated approach to the field of intercultural communication if justice is to be done to the complexity of the subject.

Abstract: Main description: Als preisgünstige Studienausgabe liegt - in 3. Auflage (1.
Abstract: Main description: This third edition of Köhler's book (1st edition 1956, 2nd expanded edition 1970 as Vol. 97 of the series »Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie«) in an inexpensive study format restores the availability of a standard work of medieval studies of essential interest for scholars and students in Romance studies, German studies, English studies, and cultural studies. Combining stylistic brilliance with unsparing criticism of one-sided interpretations, Köhler situates Chrestien de Troyes' courtly romances in the social and literary context of the 12th and 13th centuries. With their emphasis on the sociology of literature, Köhler's analyses have lost nothing of their immediate relevance for the constitution of an approach to literature that increasingly defines literary criticism in terms of cultural studies.

Abstract: "Baracchi has identified pivotal points around which the Republic operates; this allows a reading of the entire text to unfold.... a very beautifully written book." -- Walter Brogan "... a work that opens new and timely vistas within the Republic.... Her approach... is thorough and rigorous." -- John Sallis Although Plato's Republic is perhaps the most influential text in the history of Western philosophy, Claudia Baracchi finds that the work remains obscure and enigmatic. To fully understand and appreciate its meaning, she argues, we must attend to what its original language discloses. Through a close reading of the Greek text, attentive to the pervasiveness of story and myth, Baracchi investigates the dialogue's major themes. The first part of the book addresses issues of generation, reproduction, and decay as they apply to the founding of Socrates' just city. The second part takes up the connection between war and the cycle of life, employing a thorough analysis of Plato's rendition of the myth of Er. Baracchi shows that the Republic is concerned throughout with the complex but intertwined issues of life and war, locating the site of this tangled web of growth and destruction in the mythical dimension of the Platonic city

Abstract: Despite the realization that an urban environment can intensify the effects of deception in military operations, many important research questions remain unanswered, and even unasked. The authors use the well-developed literature on deception in animal biology to begin asking and answering those questions. This was done with the aim of improving the ability of U.S. forces to both conduct friendly deception and counter adversary deception in urban operations of all sorts. Using animal biology and military science as the source materials, the authors undertook to elaborate on existing deception theory and to propose new paths for technological, doctrinal, educational, and experimental development. The study concludes that in urban settings, there is great room for improvement in how U.S. forces do deception, and that it is imperative for them to better counter adversary deception. The study notes that deception methods are a preeminent form of adaptation in both biology and military operations, with the concluding chapter exploring this cross-disciplinary relationship (with a particular focus on counteradaptation as counterdeception)

Abstract: Increasing use of the Internet and other information and communications technologies (ICTs) marks a U.S. transition toward a "digital society" that may profoundly affect electricity supply, demand and delivery. RAND developed four 20-year scenarios of ICT evolution (2001?2021) for the U.S. Department of Energy and assessed their implications for future U.S. electricity requirements. Increased power consumption by ICT equipment is the most direct and visible effect, but not necessarily the most important. Over time, the effects that ICTs have on energy management, e-commerce, telework, and related trends will likely be much more consequential. Even large growth in the deployment and use of digital technologies will only modestly increase U.S. electricity use over the next two decades. The more pressing concern for an emerging digital society will be how to provide the higher-quality and more-reliable power that ICTs demand

Abstract: There is widespread agreement that in order to bring about sustainable travel in urban areas, flexible, integrated policy packages are needed that send the right signals to urban land use and transport markets. The project on Implementing Sustainable Urban Travel Policies conducted by the ECMT has shown that actually implementing integrated policy packages for sustainable urban travel is easier said than done for a great number of cities in ECMT and OECD countries. While in most countries, urban land use and travel policies are defined and implemented at the local or regional levels, there is

Abstract: "An extended new Preface and a new Epilogue written after the fall of the Taliban in 2001 place The Kirghiz and Wakhi of Afghanistan, originally published in 1979, in the context of a vastly changed world. The original book describes the cultural and ecological adaptation of the nomadic Kirghiz and their agriculturalist neighbors, the Wakhi, to high altitudes and a frigid climate in the Wakhan Corridor, a panhandle of Afghanistan that borders Pakistan, the former Soviet Union, and the People's Republic of China." "The new Preface challenges the assumption that the root cause of terrorism is religious. Shahrani asserts that the problem of terrorism is fundamentally political and is historically linked to the inappropriate model of the centralized nation-state introduced to Afghanistan by colonial regimes." "The differing responses of the Kirghiz and Wakhi to the Marxist coup are discussed in the new Epilogue. Shahrani has closely followed the flight of the Kirghiz to Pakistan in 1978 and their eventual resettlement among resentful Kurdish villagers in eastern Turkey in 1982. The ethnographic documentation and analysis of the transformation of Kirghiz society, politics, economics, and demography since their exodus from the Pamirs offer valuable lessons to our understanding of the dynamics and true resilience of small pastoral nomadic communities."--Jacket

Abstract: Sixteen essays, written by specialists from many fields, grapple with the problem of a popular culture that is not very popular - but is seen by most as vital to the body politic, whether endangered by globalization or capable of politically progressive messages for its audiences. Slippery Pastimes covers a variety of topics: Canadian popular music from rock 'n' roll to country, hip-hop to pop-Celtic; television; advertising; tourism; sport and even postage stamps! As co-editors, Nicks and Sloniowski have taken an open view of the Canadian Popular, and contributors have approached their topics from a variety of perspectives, including cultural studies, women's studies, film studies, sociology and communication studies. The essays are accessibly written for undergraduate students and interested general readers.

Abstract: Over the last decade, economists have increasingly recognized the role of meta-analysis and value transfer in synthesizing knowledge and efficiently exploiting the existing pool of knowledge. Comparative Environmental Economic Assessment explores the potential significance of using these techniques, particularly in environmental economics. Both meta-analysis and value transfer constitute major research tools which efficiently use knowledge previously acquired from other studies. The book focuses on the potential role and usefulness of these tools in environmental economic research, and goes on to address their validity, relevance and applicability

Abstract: Circe Sturm takes a bold and original approach to one of the most highly charged and important issues in the United States today: race and national identity. Focusing on the Oklahoma Cherokee, she examines how Cherokee identity is socially and politically constructed, and how that process is embedded in ideas of blood, color, and race. Not quite a century ago, blood degree varied among Cherokee citizens from full blood to 1/256, but today the range is far greater--from full blood to 1/2048. This trend raises questions about the symbolic significance of blood and the degree to which blood conne

Abstract: Pollution, alternative fuels, congestion, intelligent transportation systems, and the shift from construction to maintenance all call for a reconsideration of the existing highway revenue mechanisms, especially the gas tax. David Levinson explores the fundamental theoretical basis of highway finance, in particular the use of tolls, and supports that theory with empirical evidence. The author examines highway finance from the perspective of individual jurisdictions and travellers, and considers their interactions rather than specifying a single optimal solution. Congestion pricing has long been a goal of transportation economists, who believe it will result in a more efficient use of resources. Levinson argues that if the governance were to become more decentralized, and collection costs continue to drop, tolls could return to prominence as the preferred means of financing roads for both local and intercity travel. An approach that creates the local winners necessary to implement road pricing is required before it can be expected to become widespread

Abstract: The contributions collected in this volume mirror the plurality of approaches we find in the theoretical writings of academics in different European countries. The additional business cases from six different nations show how leaders actually have adopted and integrated working with values in their own organizations, i.e. how they put moral leadership into action. While the selected papers are not meant to be representative of each country, particular economic and cultural traditions are apparent in both thinking and managing moral leadership. The contributors, by presenting this emerging multicultural pattern of Europe, contribute to a better and more knowledgeable understanding of how European business leaders pursue their goals

Abstract: In this book, the first of two volumes, the authors provide detailed case studies of valuation techniques that have been used in developing countries. They demonstrate that valuation works and that it can yield significant insights into policy-relevant issues regarding conservation and economic development. The authors address a whole range of environmental issues under the broad themes of water and air quality, biological diversity and forest functions. The economic approaches covered include contingent valuation, hedonic property prices, travel cost methodologies and benefits transfer
Abstract: pt. 1. Air quality, water supply and water quality -- pt. 2. Valuing biological diversity -- pt. 3. Valuing forest functions

Abstract: The Economics of Demand-Led Growth is a collection of specially written essays that develop and apply the theory of demand-led growth. Long-run growth is usually portrayed as a supply-determined process. The contributions to this volume, however, are rooted in the theory of demand-led growth. In addition to general discussions of the role of demand in the long-run, the volume contains essays in the Kaldorian and Kaleckian traditions, and a section on the relationship between demand-led growth and structural change. The conclusion reached is that current neglect of the role of demand in analyses of long-run growth is unwarranted

Abstract: In this exhaustive study, the authors break new ground by integrating cutting edge insights on global warming from three different perspectives: game theory, cost-effectiveness analysis and public choice. For each perspective the authors provide an overview of important results, discuss the theoretical consistency of the models and assumptions, highlight the practical problems which are not yet captured by theory and explore the different applications to the various problems encountered in global warming. They demonstrate how each perspective has its own merits and weaknesses, and advocate an integrated approach as the best way forward. They also propose a research agenda for the future which encompasses the three methods to create a powerful tool for the analysis and resolution of global pollution problems.

Abstract: Julia Adeney Thomas turns the concept of nature into a powerful analytical lens through which to view Japanese modernity, bringing the study of both Japanese history and political modernity to a new level of clarity. She shows that nature necessarily functions as a political concept and that changing ideas of nature's political authority were central during Japan's transformation from a semifeudal world to an industrializing colonial empire. In political documents from the nineteenth to the early twentieth century, nature was redefined, moving from the universal, spatial concept of the Tokugaw

Abstract: As the world entered the twenty-first century, global skill shortages in many occupations were evident throughout the world. While these were mitigated by a global recession, there is no generally agreed upon method for measuring these shortages. This book discusses various theories for measurement. Using data collected from 19 developed countries in North and Latin America, Europe, and the Pacific region, the authors explore various aspects of skilled labor shortages, develop a methodology of measuring shortages by occupation, and provide estimates of the likelihood of the occurrence of such shortages. They develop labor market indicators which measure the degree of shortage or surplus in different occupations

Abstract: Recent years have seen the development of new theories of market failure based on asymmetric information and network effects. According to the new paradigm, we can expect substantial failure in the markets for labor, credit, insurance, software, new technologies and even used cars, to give but a few examples. This volume brings together the key papers on the subject, including classic papers by Joseph Stiglitz, George Akerlof and Paul David. The book provides powerful theoretical and empirical rebuttals challenging the assumptions of these new models and questioning the usual policy conclusions. It goes on to demonstrate how an examination of real markets and careful experimental studies are unable to verify the new theories. New frontiers for research are also suggested

Abstract: Nature and agriculture both shape the European countryside and one of the main challenges for the years to come will be to strengthen their interaction for the future development of rural areas. In this valuable and highly topical book, the authors demonstrate how economics and ecology can play a critical role in maintaining and sustaining this relationship. The book identifies the dilemmas facing European agriculture and explores their economic and ecological consequences. The authors believe a better understanding of these problems will be crucial in recognising the potential options for the future role of agriculture and nature policy and will guide the identification of suitable policy instruments

Abstract: Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations provides an innovative, interdisciplinary perspective on theory, research, and methodology of dynamic processes in parent-child relations. Edited by distinguished scholar Leon Kuczynski, this accessible volume is divided into six parts. Part I concerns dyadic processes in parent-child relationships and provides the conceptual grounding for the volume as a whole. Parts II and III examine the agency of the child and the agency of the parent, respectively. Part IV considers dynamics in the parent-child dyad as they are mediated by or impact on vario

Abstract: Anthony Ellison cuts through conventional neo-classical interpretations to expose the indispensable contribution of entrepreneurs in driving the market process and, in particular, in accomplishing the deregulation of the transportation, trade, telecommunications and financial regimes both in North America and across the globe. Entrepreneurs have an important role in any economy, but in this seminal study, the author argues that they have played a crucial part in shaping the contemporary global market. Entrepreneurs and the Transformation of the Global Economy situates the emergence of the contemporary global market economy within an historical context
