    Abstract: For decades, scholars have warned of an impending global environmental crisis. Yet, politicians, particularly in the United States, have consistently shown through their actions towards crucial "green" policies that they are not taking the threat seriously. Initiatives aimed at protecting the planet are commonly seen as belonging to a category unto themselves - the preserve of scientists and environmental enthusiasts. In this groundbreaking book, Robert L. Nadeau warns that we have moved menacingly close to a global environmental catastrophe and that the first step in evading large-scale ecological disaster is to stop drawing a distinction between issues that are "environmental" or "scientific" and those that reside in the sphere of "real life." Although scientists have attempted to bring ecological concerns to the forefront of the conversation on global issues, Nadeau argues that problems are rarely communicated in ways that can be readily understood by those outside the scientific community.; By bringing together perspectives from a variety of disciplines, including economics, politics, biology, and the history of science, "The Environmental Endgame" makes a bold and original effort to articulate the concerns of scientists, in such a way that they become the real-life, tangible concerns of billions of people around the world. Starting from the premise that people require stories to explain their world, how they fit in it, and their relationship and responsibility to different groups, Nadeau asserts that we have entered a new phase of human history and the story that accompanies it cannot be one of separation and division. Instead, it must be one of coherence and mutual goals. Nadeau demonstrates that our current governmental and financial institutions, based on neoclassical economics, lack the mechanisms for positing and implementing viable solutions to large-scale crises. In other words, we should not be thinking in terms of competing nation-states, but should reconfigure international government as a supranational federal system. The book concludes with a call to view the natural world as a part of, not separate from, humanity.; This unifying worldview would be a catalyst for implementing the new sorts of international government organizations necessary to resolving the current crisis.     Abstract: Abstract: 'In Großbritannien war die erste Frauenbewegung bekanntlich sehr stark, und der Kampf der Suffragetten um die Erlangung des Wahlrechts für Frauen hat über die Grenzen Großbritanniens hinaus Beachtung gefunden. Daher wäre eigentlich durchaus zu erwarten gewesen, dass Frauen auch eine hohe Repräsentanz im britischen Parlament erzielen. Großbritannien nimmt jedoch in Bezug auf die politische Partizipation von Frauen im europäischen Vergleich bis heute eine nachgeordnete Rolle ein. In der vorliegenden Studie erfolgt daher eine eingehende Analyse der Unterrepräsentation von Frauen in der britischen Politik. Die Autorin setzt sich eingehend mit gängigen Erklärungsansätzen auseinander und erweitert das Drei-Determinanten-Modell um einen vierten Faktor, nämlich Identität. Während Fragen der Identität bisher nur in qualitativen Untersuchungen Beachtung gefunden haben, wird dieser Faktor in dieser Studie integriert.     Abstract: Magic and Impotence in the Middle Ages investigates the common medieval belief that magic could cause impotence, focusing particularly on the period 1150-1450. The subject has never been studied in detail before, but there is a surprisingly large amount of information about it in four kinds of source: confessors' manuals; medical compendia that discussed many illnesses; commentaries on canon law; and theological commentaries on the Sentences of Peter Lombard.     Abstract: Die Rolle des Internationalen Währungsfonds (IWF) in der internationalen Finanzarchitektur ist seit seiner Gründung umstritten. Im Zuge der asiatischen Wirtschafts- und Finanzkrise in der zweiten Hälfte der 1990er Jahre erreichte die Auseinandersetzung eine neue Dimension. Globale Proteststürme und Kritik von Seiten prominenter Experten haben die Legitimität des IWF empfindlich gestört - seine Politik sei krisenverschärfend und einseitig auf Interessen großer Gläubiger ausgerichtet. Mit dem IWF rückte auch der Washington Consensus als neoliberale Entwicklungsprogrammatik verstärkt ins Sichtfeld der Kritiker. Die in Folge unternommenen Versuche, den Aufgabenbereich des IWF zu reformulieren, blieben jedoch relativ erfolglos. Diesen Reformdiskurs analysiert der Autor aus einer machttheoretischen Perspektive und durchleuchtet dabei die Organisation des Washington Consensus

Dies verändert die Diskussion über hybride Identitäten und kulturelle Zwischenräume und ermöglicht einen erweiterten Blick auf Migration, Kultur und Identität.

    Abstract: Linguistic Landscapes is the first comprehensive approach to a largely under-explored sociolinguistic phenomenon: language on signs. Based on an up-to-date review of previous research from various places around the world, the book develops an analytical framework for the systematic analysis of linguistic landscape data. This framework is applied to a sample of 2,444 signs collected in 28 survey areas in central Tokyo. Analytical categories include the languages contained and their combinations, differences between official and nonofficial signs, geographic distribution, availability of translation or transliteration, linguistic idiosyncrasies, and the comparison of older and newer signs, among others. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods, the analysis yields some unique insights about the writers of multilingual signs, their readers, and the languages and scripts in contact. Linguistic Landscapes thus demonstrates that the study of language on signs has much to contribute to research into urban multilingualism, as well as the study of language and society as a whole.

    Description / Table of Contents: Dieses Buch versucht, dem Begriff »Medien« einen systematischen Ort im Kanon des Fachs Philosophie zu geben. Zu diesem Zweck entwickelt die Autorin einen Begriff von Medien, der diese weniger unter dem Aspekt der Informationsvermittlung betrachtet als vielmehr deren transformativen Charakter betont. Exemplarisch wird er an einer zeitgenössischen Konzeption von Schrift vorgeführt, die sich nicht auf die Dimension von verschrifteter Sprache beschränkt, sondern auch logische Notationen oder Computersoftware mit umfasst. Detaillierte Analysen zentraler Arbeiten von Derrida, Wittgenstein und Goodman weisen auf, dass Medien als die nicht hintergehbare Bedingung der Möglichkeit von Sinn- und Bedeutungsgebung anzusehen sind. Die philosophische Behandlung von Medien leitet somit in eine allgemeine Theorie der Medialität über, die die Weisen unserer Erschließung von Wirklichkeit zum Gegenstand hat
