    Note: Main description: "Lebende Bilder", auch unter der französischen Bezeichnung "tableaux vivants" bekannt, sind ein verbreitetes Phänomen der italienischen Festkultur des 15. Jahrhunderts. Anders als die nach Kunstwerken gestellten "lebenden Bilde" des 18./19. Jahrhunderts waren sie meist für den Anlass erfundene Darstellungen, die künstlerische Bildformulare und Gestaltungsprinzipien aufgegriffen und elaborierten. In Italien wurden sie auf einem Wagen oder Traggerüst in Prozessionen und Festzügen mitgeführt, gelegentlich belebten sie auch anstelle von Statuen Triumpharchitekturen oder waren als "Paradiese" fest an einem hochgelegenen Ort eingerichtet. Die Inszenierung von "lebenden Bildern" findet sich in unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen und konnte sowohl religiöser und politischer Agitation wie der Repräsentation von Personen und kommunalen Vereinigungen dienen. In dem Buch werden die "lebenden Bilder" auf ihre Erscheinungsformen, Funktionen, die zeitgenössische Rezeption und ihr Verhältnis zu den Bildenden Künsten untersucht. Da nur sehr wenige bildliche Dokumente überliefert sind, stützt sich die Analyse im wesentlichen auf die Auswertung bisher unbeachteter schriftlicher Quellen. Die Besonderheit des "lebenden Bildes" in der visuellen Kultur des Quattrocento liegt darin, dass es, zwar von kurzer Dauer, jeweils an ein spezifisches, historisch bedeutungsvolles oder den jährlichen Zyklus prägendes Ereignis gebunden auftrat. Und sich so in das kollektive Gedächtnis einschrieb. Als ein Massenmedium trug es zur Tradierung, Popularisierung und Etablierung bestimmter Bildthemen oder Inhalte bei. Damit ist es, wie die Verbreitung von Buchdruck und Holzschnitt, ein Faktor des medialen Umbruchs im 15. Jahrhundert

    Abstract: The Good-Natured Feminist inaugurates a sustained conversation between ecofeminism and recent writings in feminist postmodernism and radical democracy.     Abstract: Spanning six centuries of political thought in European history, this book puts the ideas of thinkers from Christine de Pizan to Simone de Beauvoir in the broader contexts of their time. Conventional histories of political thought have sometimes relegated feminist thinking to the footnotes. This text considers how feminism is central to key notions of modern political discourse such as autonomy, liberty and equality, and feminist discussions of morality have been linked to major currents in political thought such as republicanism, civic humanism and romanticism. This collection of essays aims to show that feminism is not a variant of modern radical discourse but is a mode of analyzing the issues of authority, power and virtue that have been at the heart of European political thought from the Middle Ages.

    Abstract: Die Töpferei Niehenke in Hasbergen bei Osnabrück ist der letzte Betrieb im westlichen Niedersachsen, in dem traditionelles Geschirr hergestellt wird. Ausgehend von der Hundertjahrfeier der Werkstatt im Jahre 1995 wird ihre wechselvolle Geschichte von den Familienmitgliedern selbst geschildert. Exkurse in zwei Museen in Osnabrück und Hagen a. T. W. erlauben eine Einordnung des Betriebes in die Geschichte der Töpferei im Osnabrücker Land. Die verschiedenen Phasen des Herstellungsprozesses einer Teekanne gliedern den zweiten Teil des Films, der die aktuelle Situation der Töpferei beleuchtet, unterstützt von Off-Kommentaren des jetzigen Werkstattleiters, Bernd Niehenke.
    Abstract: The Niehenke potter's workshop in Hasbergen near Osnabrück is the last business operation in western Lower Saxony in which traditional crockery is manufactured. Starting with the workshop's centennial celebration in 1995, its chequered history is told by members of the family themselves. Excursions in two museums in Osnabrück and Hagen a. T. W. allow classification of this business operation in the history of pottery in the Osnabrück region. The different phases of the manufacturing process of a teapot structure the second part of the film, which illustrates the current circumstances of the pottery workshop. This is supplemented by off-camera commentary of the present head of the workshop, Bernd Niehenke.

    Abstract: In der vorliegenden Studie, die linguistische und sozialpsychologische Forschungsergebnisse zusammenführt, werden zunächst Einblicke in die theoretischen Zusammenhänge der Funktionalität von Sprache in Dialogen Jugendlicher mit Erwachsenen gegeben. Die durch die Ergebnisse der sozialpsychologischen Marker-Forschung, der Sprechstil-Forschung sowie durch die Kontextualisierungstheorie von J.J. Gumperz beeinflußte theoretische und methodische Konzeption versucht, neue Wege in der Jugendsprachenforschung zu gehen und Jugendsprache in den Substandardbereich des Deutschen einzuordnen. In breitangelegten empirischen Analysen wird der vielfältige Gebrauch von Jugendsprache durch Jugendliche im Gespräch mit Erwachsenen systematisiert. Dabei werden die Ergebnisse der Jugendsprachenforschung kritisch durchleuchtet. Außerdem wird nach der interaktiven Bedeutung der jugendsprachlichen Imitationsversuche Erwachsener gefragt, die in der Forschung bislang noch nicht erfaßt worden sind. Die Ergebnisse der Studie machen deutlich, daß die verbeitete These von der Abgrenzungsfunktion von Jugendsprache nur mit Einschränkung gilt, da Jugendsprache eine Vielfalt von Funktionen übernimmt. Dadurch kann die, häufig als defizitär eingestufte, kommunikative Kompetenz Jugendlicher neu bewertet werden. Zudem zeigt sich die Bedeutung von Jugendsprache für die Sprachpraxis Erwachsener im Gespräch mit Jugendlichen. Die Studie wendet sich, über den Kreis der Linguisten hinaus, an interessierte Sozialpädagogen und Lehrer sowie an in der Jugendarbeit Tätige und Eltern, die die Sprachpraxis Jugendlicher und Erwachsener im intergenerationellen Dialog vor einem theoretischen Hintergrund reflektieren möchten.

    Abstract: African American Views of the Japanese reveals a page of history long ignored. In black America, Japanese were not always known for racist remarks, Sambo images, and discriminatory hiring practices. Once, thousands of African Americans thought of the Japanese as “champions of the darker races.” Ordinary urban ghetto dwellers, share-croppers, and tenant farmers looked to the Land of the Rising Sun for salvation. Some of the greatest leaders in the fight for equal rights and greater freedoms—such as W. E. B. Du Bois, Monroe Trotter, Mary Church Terrell, Ida Wells Barnett, George Schuyler, A. Philip Randolph, and James Weldon Johnson—saw allies in the struggle for equality. The Afro-centric Marcus Garvey shared his stage with the Japanese. In his teachings, Elijah Muhammad taught that the original black man was Asian and acknowledged Japan’s role as leader. Here Reginald Kearney examines the role played by Japan and its people in the dreams of prosperity for many African Americans. He also uncovers the shock many blacks felt upon learning that this high regard for the Japanese had been betrayed by discriminatory remarks and actions. But overall Kearney remains optimistic that the African American-Japanese rift can be mended. -- Provided by publisher

    Abstract: In the last twenty years, immigration has become one of the most contested issues in Western Europe. The arrival of Africans, Asians, Eastern Europeans and others in Italy has reversed earlier trends of emigration. Debate, political activity and violence have raised questions of rejection and integration, of anti-racism and the new racism. Studies of these issues commonly focus on political activity and the plight of minorities, but this book breaks new ground in its emphasis on the everyday reactions of Italians to immigration and related issues. Drawing on research carried out in Palermo, Jeffrey Cole considers the role of class, culture, local history and political economy in the ambivalent responses of Sicilians to immigrants.     Abstract: This was the first modern ethnography of the Murik, a relatively large and important community settled on the Sepik River estuary in Papua New Guinea, and the only book of a non-Western culture drawing on the conceptual framework of the Russian literary theorist, Mikhail Bakhtin. Murik men, who exercise political power, conceptualize women as the source of nurture, generosity and love. This conceptualization creates for men a kind of existential problem, and their claim to sustain and reproduce society requires them to appropriate the nurturant qualities of women. So they must, in some sense, model certain aspects of themselves after women. A 'maternal schema' or poetics of the female body', therefore underlines the sociocultural patterns of these societies. This schema expresses itself in a range of societal domains: in kinship relations, life-cycle rituals, the men's cults, and in disputes and processes of conflict resolution. The issues discussed tie in with some of the major contemporary debates in the social sciences: the relationship between ideas of male and female power

    Abstract: Using models from social anthropology as its basis, this book looks at the role of personal relationships in classical Greece and their bearing on interstate politics. It begins with a discussion of what friendship meant in the Greek world of the classical period, and then shows how the models for friendship in the private sphere were mirrored in the public sphere at both domestic and interstate level. As well as relations between Greeks (in particular those in Athens and Sparta), Dr Mitchell looks at Greek relations with those on the margins of the Greek world, particularly the state of Macedon, and with neighbouring non-Greeks such as the Thracians and the Persians. She finds that these other cultures did not always have the same understanding of what friendship was, and that this led to misunderstandings and difficulties in the relations between non-Greeks and Greeks

    Abstract: Main description: Anhand einer umfangreichen Sammlung englisch- und deutschsprachiger Beispiele werden Mißverständnisse empirisch untersucht. Überlegungen anhand benachbarter interaktiver Phänomene wie unbemerktem Mißverstehen und Nichtverstehen führen darüber hinaus zu dem Ergebnis, daß vollständiges Verstehen eher ein soziales Konstrukt als eine interaktive Realität darstellt.
    Abstract: Main description: In this book misunderstandings are analyzed using a pragmatically-oriented modell of communication. The empirical basis is a large corpus of examples from English and German. The theoretical approach makes it possible in many instances to identify the reason why a misunderstanding occurs. A three-level concept of communicative functions, making use of some fundamental concepts of speech act theory, leads to a classification of three major types of misunderstandings. An investigation into the relationship between misunderstandings and phenomena such as nonunderstanding and unnoticed misunderstandings leads to the conclusion that 'total' understanding must be regarded as a social construct rather than as interactive reality.

Die Frage, wodurch eine sozialaktive Lebensbewältigung von Mädchen und jungen Frauen blockiert oder unterstützt wird, steht im Zentrum der Untersuchung. Dabei wird die spezifische Lebensbewältigung von Mädchen und jungen Frauen in ländlichen Regionen in den Vordergrund gerückt. Qualitative Interviews von 33 Mädchen und jungen Frauen zwischen 18 und 28 Jahren, in einer peripher ländlichen Region, bilden die empirische Basis der Untersuchung. Daraus ergeben sich sozialpolitische und pädagogische Ansatzpunkte und Perspektiven für eine Mädche

    Abstract: What happens to social movements in rural settings when they do not face the divisive issues of race and class? Marilyn Watkins examines the stable political climate built by successive waves of Populism, socialism, the farmer-labor movement, and the Grange, in turn-of-the-century western Washington. She shows how all of these movements drew upon the same community base, empowered farmers, and encouraged them in the belief that democracy, independence, and prosperity were realizable goals. Indeed they were-in a setting where agriculture was diversified, farmers were debt-free, and, critically,women enjoyed equal status as activists in social movements.Rural Democracy illuminates the problems that undermined Populism and other forms of rural radicalism in the South and the Midwest by demonstrating the political success of those movements where such problems were notably absent: in Lewis County, Washington. By so doing, Watkins convincingly demonstrates the continuing value of local community studies in understanding the large-scale transformations that continue to sweep over rural America.

    Abstract: Mussolini believed that numbers were the key to strength. Between 1922 and 1945 the Fascists attempted to translate that belief into policy by introducing a structured programme to increase the population in Italy. This included campaigns to increase the birth rate, the establishment of demographic colonies, and a battle against urbanisation. This book is a detailed examination of the demographic policy of Mussolini's Fascist regime. Based on archival research, it shows how the Fascists used statistics to mould public opinion, as well as to form policy, and demonstrates the ways in which population theory at the time both reflected and informed policy. Carl Ipsen argues that Mussolini's demographic policy can tell us a great deal about the contradictory nature of Fascism itself, and describes the Fascist efforts to mould the Italian population as one of the most telling examples of the failed attempt to create a totalitarian Fascist utopia

    Abstract: This 1996 book takes a look at the relationship between socialism and feminism in the years before the First World War through a detailed examination of the Social Democratic Federation (SDF), Britain's first Marxist party. It reassesses the history of the SDF, exploring for the first time SDF ideas and practice on issues such as marriage and 'free love', women and work, and the suffrage, as well as the attitudes taken to women and their potential as socialists. Dr Hunt shows how the SDF came to officially equivocate on the woman question and how this shaped what it meant to be a socialist woman in the following years. Through this fascinating examination of the links and antagonisms between the feminist and socialist movements, Dr Hunt not only reclaims the history of a forgotten group of socialist women, but also sheds light on the perennial debate about the comparative significance of sex and class in defining political identity

    Abstract: Marc Bloch has been very influential in the development of both history and social science. Comparative historians, historical geographers, and historical sociologists have all pointed to his work as a model. This book is the first detailed examination of the relationship of his work to both Durkheimian sociology and Vidalian geography. Through a careful examination of the debates in which he was involved and the institutional circumstances in which he worked, it places Bloch's work within its intellectual context, and assesses the nature of his contribution. Professor Friedman argues that, despite the frequent claims of scholars in history, sociology and geography, Bloch did not adopt either the Durkheimian or Vidalian approach. Both disciplines were central to his intellectual development, but Bloch's relationships to the two disciplines were interdependent, and the result was his own highly acclaimed and unique approach

    Abstract: The men of Renaissance Florence were so renowned for sodomy that "Florenzer" in German meant "sodomite." Indeed, in the late fifteenth century, as many as one in two Florentine men had come to the attention of the authorities for sodomy by the time they were thirty. In the seventy years from 1432 to 1502, some 17,000 men - in a city of only 40,000 - were investigated for sodomy; 3,000 were convicted and thousands more confessed to gain amnesty. Michael Rocke vividly depicts this vibrant sexual culture in a world where these same-sex acts were not the deviant transgressions of a small minority, but an integral part of a normal masculine identity. Rocke uncovers a culture in which sexual roles were strictly defined by age, with boys under eighteen the "passive" participants in sodomy, youths in their twenties and older men the "active" participants, and most men at the age of thirty marrying women, their days of sexual frivolity with boys largely over. Such same sex activities were viewed as a normal phase in the transition to adulthood, and only a few pursued them much further. Rather than precluding heterosexual experiences, they were considered an extension of youthful and masculine lust and desire. As Niccolo Machiavelli quipped about a handsome man, "When young he lured husbands away from their wives, and now he lures wives away from their husbands." Florentines generally accepted sodomy as a common misdemeanor, to be punished with a fine, rather than as a deadly sin and a transgression against nature. There is no word, in the otherwise rich Florentine sexual lexicon, for "homosexual," nor is there a distinctive and well-developed homosexual "subculture." Rather, sexual acts between men and boys were an integral feature of the dominant culture. Rocke roots this sexual activity in the broader context of Renaissance Florence, with its social networks of families, juvenile gangs, neighbors, patronage, guilds, and confraternities, and its busy political life from the early years of the Republic through the period of Lorenzo de' Medici, Savonarola, and the beginning of Medici princely rule
