    Abstract: "The rapid rise of emerging economies has produced deep-ranging changes in the global order during recent decades. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the bipolar confrontation of the Cold War seemed to be replaced by a universalized model of political liberalism and economic neo-liberalism. In recent years, however, rising nationalism and protectionism indicate the end of unfettered globalization, a looming crisis of liberal democracy, and a return to ideologies of "systemic competition", especially vis-a-vis China. Against this background, the proposed volume takes a fresh look at the evolution of governance models in Western and non-Western civilizations - Africa, India, China, and the Muslim world in particular. These models have been largely self-contained and without intensive interaction for a long time. In the wake of globalization, systems, ideologies, and political values have become part of global discourse, eventually turning into what Samuel Huntington called a "clash of civilizations." The chapters in this volume offer perspectives on the diversity of civilizations of governance as a base for a new multilateralism in the global context. The contributions explore relevant theoretical concepts of transnational governance, law, and multiple modernity. The empirical focus is on analyzing different governance systems in non-Western civilizations and Europe, including national states and transnational institutions, traditions, and networks. The volume assembles papers presented at the 2019 International Conference of the Institute of Public Policy at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China. The contributions and the introductory framework have been updated to reflect the unexpected and unprecedented challenges from the coronavirus pandemic and the related economic and social crises"--

    Abstract: This multi-disciplinary volume is one of the few collections about social change covering various cases of mass violence and genocide. In life under persecution, social relations and social structures were not absent and not simply replaced by an ethno-racial order. The studies in this book show the influence of social structures like gender, age and class on life under persecution. Exploring practices in family and labor relations and of collective action, they counter claims of an atomization of society or total uprootedness of victims. Despite being exposed to poverty and want and under the permanent threat of political violence, persecuted people tried to develop their own agency. Case studies are about the Jewish and Armenian persecutions, Rwanda, the war of decolonization in Mozambique and civilian refuges in Belarus during World War II. The authors are a mix of experienced scholars and young researchers

    Abstract: "Children of the Soil traces the relationships between indigenous Malagasy people, Comorian migrants, and French colonizers across several generations in the Indian Ocean port city of Mahajanga, Madagascar. Focusing on the built environment, Tasha Rijke-Epstein considers the complex dynamics between African groups and the spatial and formal ways that they asserted their presence and claimed space in the city before, during, and after colonization. Rijke-Epstein focuses on the articulation of Malagasy power through indigenous architectural forms; then shifts her focus to consider how Comorian migrants shaped the city's spatial and cultural terrain, marrying into existing Malagasy families, constructing mosques, and animating street life. Yet despite their longstanding ties to Madagascar and shared cultural lexicon, Comorian migrants were targeted in a series of violent uprisings in 1976 that resulted in the deaths of at least 1,000 people and the expulsion of more than 16,000 people from Mahajanga. Children of the Soil gives readers a new way to understand the role of material environments in shaping national and urban belonging, as well as to understand the wave of expulsions that happened across post-colonial societies"--

    Abstract: Working-class Britons played a crucial role in the pioneering settlement and integration of South Asians in imperial Britain. Using a host of new and neglected sources, Imperial Heartland revises the history of early South Asian immigration to Britain, focusing on the northern English city of Sheffield. Rather than viewing immigration through the lens of inevitable conflict, this study takes an alternative approach, situating mixed marriages and inter-racial social networks centrally within the South Asian settlement of modern Britain. Whilst acknowledging the episodic racial conflict of the early inter-war period, David Holland challenges assumptions that insurmountable barriers of race, religion and culture existed between the British working classes and non-white newcomers. Imperial Heartland closely examines the reactions of working-class natives to these young South Asian men and overturns our pre-conceptions that hostility to perceived racial or national difference was an overriding pre-occupation of working-class people during this period. Imperial Heartland therefore offers a fresh and inspiring new perspective on the social and cultural history of modern Britain.

    Abstract: The first work to systematically investigate the potential for a dialogue between postcolonial studies and the history of Zionism. There is an "unacknowledged kinship" between studies of Zionism and post-colonial studies, a kinship that deserves to be both discovered and acknowledged. Unacknowledged Kinships strives to facilitate a conversation between the historiography of Zionism and postcolonial studies by identifying and exploring possible linkages and affiliations between their subjects as well as the limits of such connections. The contributors to this volume discuss central theoretical concepts developed within the field of postcolonial studies, and they use these concepts to analyze crucial aspects of the history of Zionism while contextualizing Zionist thought, politics, and culture within colonial and postcolonial histories. This book also argues that postcolonial studies could gain from looking at the history of Zionism as an example of not only colonial domination but also the seemingly contradictory processes of national liberation and self-empowerment. Unacknowledged Kinships is the first work to systematically investigate the potential for a dialogue between postcolonial studies and Zionist historiography. It is also unique in suggesting that postcolonial concepts can be applied to the history of European Zionism just as comprehensively as to the history of Zionism in Palestine and Israel or Arab countries.     Abstract: "Without the State explores the 2013-14 Euromaidan protests--a wave of demonstrations and civil unrest in Ukraine--through in-depth ethnographic research with leftist, feminist, and student activists in Kyiv. The book is organized around the concept of "self-organization," the notion that if something needs to be done and a person has the competence to do it, then they should simply do it. Emily Channell-Justice reveals how self-organization in Ukraine came out of leftist practices but was adopted by actors from across the spectrum of political views over the course of Euromaidan, including far-right groups. The book shows how the widespread adoption of self-organization has encouraged Ukrainians to rethink their expectations of the relationship between citizens and their state. It explains how self-organized practices have changed people’s views on what they think they can contribute to their own communities, and in the wake of Russia’s renewed invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it has also motivated new networks of mutual aid within Ukraine and beyond.     Abstract: In 1898, just before she was hanged for rebelling against colonial rule, Charwe Nyakasikana, spirit medium of the legendary ancestor Ambuya Nehanda, famously prophesised that "my bones will rise again". A century later bones, bodies and human remains have come to occupy an increasingly complex place in Zimbabwe's postcolonial milieu. From ancestral "bones" rising again in the struggle for independence, and later land, to resurfacing bones of unsettled wardead; and from the troubling decaying remains of post-independence gukurahundi massacres to the leaky, tortured bodies of recent election violence, human materials are intertwined in postcolonial politics in ways that go far beyond, yet necessarily implicate, contests over memory, commemoration and the representation of the past. In this book Joost Fontein examines the complexities of human remains in Zimbabwe's 'politics of the dead'. Challenging and innovative, he takes us beyond current scholarship on memory, commemoration and the changing significance of 'traditional' death practices, to examine the political implications of human remains as material substances, as duplicitous rumours, and as returning spirits. Linking the indeterminacy of human substances to the productive but precarious uncertainties of rumours and spirits, the book points to how the incompleteness of death is politically productive and ultimately derives from the problematic, entangled excessivities of human material and immaterial existence, and is deeply intertwined with the stylistics of postcolonial power and politics.

    Abstract: In Show Time, Lee Ann Fujii asks why some perpetrators of political violence, from lynch mobs to genocidal killers, display their acts of violence so publicly and extravagantly. Closely examining three horrific and extreme episodes—the murder of a prominent Tutsi family amidst the genocide in Rwanda, the execution of Muslim men in a Serb-controlled village in Bosnia during the Balkan Wars, and the lynching of a twenty-two-year old Black farmhand on Maryland's Eastern Shore in 1933—Fujii shows how "violent displays" are staged to not merely to kill those perceived to be enemies or threats, but also to affect and influence observers, neighbors, and the larger society. Watching and participating in these violent displays profoundly transforms those involved, reinforcing political identities, social hierarchies, and power structures. Such public spectacles of violence also force members of the community to choose sides—openly show support for the goals of the violence, or risk becoming victims, themselves. Tracing the ways in which public displays of violence unfold, Show Time reveals how the perpetrators exploit the fluidity of social ties for their own ends.

    Abstract: "Through staging dialogues between scholars, activists and artists from a variety of disciplinary, geographical and historical specializations, Postcolonial and Postsocialist Dialogues explores the possible resonances and dissonances between the postcolonial and the postsocialist in feminist theorizing and practice. While postcolonial and postsocialist perspectives have been explored in feminist studies, the two analytics tend to be viewed separately. This volume brings together attempts to understand if and how postcolonial and postsocialist dimensions of the human condition - historical, existential, political, and ideological - intersect and correlate in feminist experiences, identities, and struggles. In the three sections that probe the intersections, opacities and challenges between the two discourses, the authors put under pressure what postcolonialism and postsocialism mean for feminist scholarship and activism. The contributions address the emergence of new political and cultural formations as well as circuits of bodies and capital in post-Cold War and postcolonial era in currently re-emerging neo-colonial and imperial conflicts. They engage with issues of gender, sexuality, race, migration, diasporas, indigeneity, and disability, while also developing new analytical tools such as postsocialist precarity, queer postsocialist coloniality, uneventful feminism, feminist opacity, feminist queer crip epistemologies. The collection will be of interest for postcolonial and postsocialist researchers, students of gender studies, feminist activists and scholars"--

    Abstract: The exploration of what May Sarton calls the »foreign country of old age« usually does not go far beyond the familiar: the focus of Aging Studies has thus far clearly rested upon North America and Western Europe. This multi-disciplinary essay collection critically examines conditions and representations of old age and aging in Eastern and Southeastern Europe from various perspectives of the humanities and social sciences. By shedding light on these culturally specific contexts, the contributions widen our understanding of the aging process in all its diversity and demonstrate that a shift in perspectives might in fact challenge a number of taken-for-granted positions and presumptions of Aging Studies

    Abstract: "Turkey has gone through significant transformations over the last century-from the Ottoman Empire and Young Turk era to the Republic of today-but throughout it has demonstrated troubling continuities in its encouragement and deployment of mass violence. In particular, the construction of a Muslim-Turkish identity has been achieved in part by designating "internal enemies" at whom public hatred can be directed. This volume provides a wide range of case studies and historiographical reflections on the alarming recurrence of such violence in Turkish history, as atrocities against varied ethnic-religious groups from the nineteenth century to today have propelled the nation's very sense of itself"

    Abstract: "In the middle decades of the twentieth century, in the wake of economic depression, war, and in the midst of the Cold War, an array of technical experts and government officials developed a substantial body of expertise to contain and manage the disruptions to American society caused by unprecedented threats. Today the tools invented by these mid-twentieth century administrative reformers are largely taken for granted, assimilated into the everyday workings of government. As Stephen Collier and Andrew Lakoff argue in this book, the American government's current practices of disaster management can be traced back to this era. Collier and Lakoff argue that an understanding of the history of this initial formation of the "emergency state" is essential to an appreciation of the distinctive ways that the U.S. government deals with crises and emergencies-or fails to deal with them-today. This book focuses on historical episodes in emergency or disaster planning and management. Some of these episodes are well-known and have often been studied, while others are little-remembered today. The significance of these planners and managers is not that they were responsible for momentous technical innovations or that all their schemes were realized successfully.     Abstract: How do religious, ethnic, and national identities interact in religiously homogenous ethnic conflicts? Is it possible for religion to act as a resolution tool in such conflicts? Why? Why not? In search for answers to these questions, 'Under the Banner of Islam' focuses on the ambivalent role Sunni Islam has played in Turkey's Kurdish conflict - both as a conflict-resolution tool and as a tool of resistance - in the last two decades. Relying mainly on participant observation in Civil Friday Prayers and 62 interviews conducted in three different cities in Turkey (Istanbul and the majority - Kurdish Diyarbakir and Batman) between June 2012 and June 2013, it demonstrates that Sunni Islam has had a very limited impact as a conflict-resolution tool in Turkey.

Der Sammelband besteht aus einem einleitenden Teil und drei inhaltlich gegliederten Teilen: Die beiden einführenden Beiträge fächern die Themengebiete und Fragestellungen auf, die aus der Verknüpfung von Sicherheitsstudien und Geschlechterstudien hervorgehen.     Abstract: Migrant protest has proliferated worldwide in the last two decades, explicitly posing questions of identity, rights, and equality in a globalized world. Nonetheless, such mobilizations are considered anomalies in social movement studies, and political sociology more broadly, due to 'weak interests' and a particularly disadvantageous position of 'outsiders' to claim rights connected to citizenship. In an attempt to address this seeming paradox, this book explores the interactions and spaces shaping the emergence, trajectory, and fragmentation of migrant protest in unfavourable contexts of marginalization. Such a perspective unveils both the odds of precarious mobilizations, and the ways they can be temporarily overcome. While adopting the encompassing terminology of 'migrant', the book focusses on precarious migrants, including both asylum seekers and 'illegalized' migrants

    Abstract: "Americans today are often skeptical of scientific authority. Many conservatives dismiss climate change and Darwinism as liberal fictions, arguing that "tenured radicals" have coopted the sciences and other disciplines. Some progressives, especially in the universities, worry that science's celebration of objectivity and neutrality masks its attachment to Eurocentric and patriarchal values. As we grapple with the implications of climate change and revolutions in fields from biotechnology to robotics to computing, it is crucial to understand how scientific authority functions-and where it has run up against political and cultural barriers. Science under Fire reconstructs a century of battles over the cultural implications of science in the United States. Andrew Jewett reveals a persistent current of criticism which maintains that scientists have injected faulty social philosophies into the nation's bloodstream under the cover of neutrality. This charge of corruption has taken many forms and appeared among critics with a wide range of social, political, and theological views, but common to all is the argument that an ideologically compromised science has produced an array of social ills. Jewett shows that this suspicion of science has been a major force in American politics and culture by tracking its development, varied expressions, and potent consequences since the 1920s. Looking at today's battles over science, Jewett argues that citizens and leaders must steer a course between, on the one hand, the naïve image of science as a pristine, value-neutral form of knowledge, and, on the other, the assumption that scientists' claims are merely ideologies masquerading as truths"--

    Abstract: "The massacre on October 6, 1976, in Bangkok was brutal and violent, its savagery unprecedented in modern Thai history. Four decades later there has been no investigation into the atrocity; information remains limited, the truth unknown. There has been no collective coming to terms with what happened or who is responsible. Thai society still refuses to confront this dark page in its history. Moments of Silence focuses on the silence that surrounds the October 6 massacre. Silence, the book argues, is not forgetting. Rather it signals an inability to forget or remember-or to articulate a socially meaningful memory. It is the "unforgetting," the liminal domain between remembering and forgetting. Historian Thongchai Winichakul, a participant in the events of that day, gives the silence both a voice and a history by highlighting the factors that contributed to the unforgetting amidst changing memories of the massacre over the decades that followed.
    Abstract: They include shifting political conditions and context, the influence of Buddhism, the royal-nationalist narrative of history, the role played by the monarchy as moral authority and arbiter of justice, and a widespread perception that the truth might have devastating ramifications for Thai society. The unforgetting impacted both victims and perpetrators in different ways. It produced a collective false memory of an incident that never took place, but it also produced silence that is filled with hope and counter-history. Moments of Silence tells the story of a tragedy in Thailand-its victims and survivors-and how Thai people coped when closure was unavailable in the wake of atrocity. But it also illuminates the unforgetting as a phenomenon common to other times and places where authoritarian governments flourish, where atrocities go unexamined, and where censorship (imposed or self-directed) limits public discourse.

    Abstract: "This book identifies and examine the changing roles of Nigerian women: in the family, educational attainment and society as experienced and expressed by a sample of educated, Nigerian women. Five of the participants were children caught in Biafran (Nigerian) war and their education was interrupted during the war. All struggle to gain education as girls and women growing up in Nigeria in families with sometimes limited resources. The book is based on the assumption that changes are taking place at all levels of Nigerian society, and that these changes are reflected in the way Nigerian women think and express views about themselves and their extended families. Nine Nigerian women resident in Egypt, were interviewed in depth using the 'topical life history' method to reveal their attitudes and perceptions concerning the woman's role in the family. In lengthy, free form, non-directive interviews, the participants recount their life histories from small children to the present day, and in this process comment and reveal their feelings about personal, family and social issues. Based on a literature review some eight hypotheses are identified and examined concerning these issues and the participants' views about them. The response data are grouped under the hypotheses and analyzed. Conclusions suggest changing role patterns of women as expressed by these women from lower- and middle-class families, concerning education male and female children, bearing progeny, polygamy, earning income to provide for the family, marriage, male domination and influences and pressures from the extended family"--

    Abstract: "One in two white youth born into the upper-middle-class will fall from it. Drawing upon ten years of longitudinal interviews with over 100 American youth, this book shows which upper-middle-class youth are most likely to fall, how they fall, and why they do not see it coming. The book shows that upper-middle-class youth inherit different amounts of academic knowledge, institutional insights, and money from their parents. Those raised with more resources enter class reproduction pathways, while those raised with fewer resources enter downwardly mobile paths. Of course, upper-middle-class youth whose families give them few resources could switch courses by drawing upon the resources in their community. They rarely do. Instead, they internalize identities that reflect their resource weaknesses and encourage them to maintain them. Those who fall are then youth raised with resource weaknesses and they fall by internalizing identities that encourage them to maintain them. They are often surprised by their downward mobility as they observed other time periods in which their resources and identities kept them or their parents in their class"--

    Abstract: "Americans have long considered themselves a people set apart. Yet American exceptionalism is built on a set of tacit beliefs about other cultures. From the founding exclusion of indigenous peoples and enslaved Africans to the uneasy welcome of waves of immigrants, from republican disavowals of colonialism to Cold War proclamations of freedom, Americans' ideas of their differences from others have shaped the modern world--and how Americans have viewed foreigners is deeply revealing of their assumptions about themselves. Just Like Us is a pathbreaking exploration of what foreignness has meant across American history. Thomas Borstelmann traces American ambivalence about non-Americans, identifying a paradoxical perception of foreigners as suspiciously different yet fundamentally sharing American values at heart beneath the layers of culture. Considering race and religion, notions of the American way of life, attitudes toward immigrants, competition with communism, Americans abroad, and the subversive power of American culture, he offers a surprisingly optimistic account of the acceptance of difference. Borstelmann contends that increasing contact with peoples around the globe during the Cold War encouraged mainstream society to grow steadily more inclusive in terms of who could be considered fully American.     Abstract: Im Zuge der Flüchtlingskrise sind über 1,4 Mio. Flüchtlinge nach Deutschland gekommen. Dies bringt für die Verwaltungen erhebliche neue Anforderungen mit sich und hat zu nicht unerheblichen Vollzugsproblemen geführt. Es existiert ein ebenenübergreifendes Vollzugssystem mit einer beachtlichen institutionellen und prozeduralen Komplexität. Nachdem die Probleme des Verwaltungshandelns zunächst wenig thematisiert worden waren, hat sich die Diskussion hierzu mittlerweile deutlich intensiviert. Zudem haben das Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge, die Bundesagentur für Arbeit sowie die Bundesländer begonnen, das bestehende Verwaltungsvollzugssystem zu reformieren, und auf kommunaler Ebene gibt es innovative Ansätze im Bereich der Integration. Der vorliegende Band zieht eine Zwischenbilanz zum Verwaltungshandeln in der Flüchtlingskrise und zeigt institutionelle Strategien zu deren Bewältigung für verschiedene föderale Ebenen auf.     Abstract: In the course of the refugee crisis, over 1.4 million refugees have arrived in Germany. This entails many new demands on administrative bodies and has led to considerable implementation problems. There is a cross-level implementation system of a substantial institutional and procedural complexity. The problems of administrative action were initially barely discussed. In the meantime, however, the discussion has intensified. In addition, the Federal Agency of Migration and Refugees, the Federal Labour Office and the federal states have begun to reform the existing administrative implementation system, and there are innovative approaches in the area of integration on a municipal level. The present volume draws up an interim balance on administrative action in the context of the refugee crisis and offers institutional strategies for addressing it for various federal levels. Before and After the State takes a multidisciplinary approach to examining the imposition of a border across a region that already held a vibrant, highly complex society and dynamic trading networks. It details the evolution of local, trading, and immigrant populations as they moved into the Pacific Northwest and imposed control over public power. Allan McDougall, Lisa Philips, and Daniel Boxberger use case studies to document the malleable character of identity - the discrepancy between individual lives and externally imposed assessments of those lives - and review the strength of national narratives north and south of the border. The authors explore fundamental questions of state formation, social transformation, and the (re)construction of identity to expose the devices and myths of nation building. In revealing the mechanics of this transformation, they demonstrate how the creation of nation states and borders affected the people who lived in the region before and through the transition - with repercussions that still reverberate."--
