    Abstract: In einer 1908 erschienenen "Kampfschrift gegen die Geräusche unseres Lebens" ereiferte sich der Kulturphilosoph Theodor Lessing über das "Getobe unermesslich anschwellender Riesenstädte, in denen "einer auf des anderen Nervenklaviatur" spiele. Als große Lärmbelästigung empfand er vor allem die Musik: So mokierte Lessing sich über die "grauenhafte Unsitte" der Biermusiken und Promenadenkonzerte oder die "Tyrannei" des Klavierspiels bei geöffnetem Fenster. Derlei Beschwerden sind indes nur die Gegenseite einer sich seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert umfassend ausbreitenden urbanen populären Musikkultur, die dieser Band aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick nimmt.

    Abstract: Recorded music is as different to live music as film is to theatre. In this book, Simon Zagorski-Thomas employs current theories from psychology and sociology to examine how recorded music is made and how we listen to it. Setting out a framework for the study of recorded music and record production, he explains how recorded music is fundamentally different to live performance, how record production influences our interpretation of musical meaning and how the various participants in the process interact with technology to produce recorded music. He combines ideas from the ecological approach to perception, embodied cognition and the social construction of technological systems to provide a summary of theoretical approaches that are applied to the sound of the music and the creative activity of production. A wide range of examples from Zagorski-Thomas's professional experience reveal these ideas in action

    Abstract: New media laws and technologies are currently changing radio in West Africa. Tilo Grätz analyzes this change using the example of the appropriation of radio technologies in Benin. He shows that the processes take place in the interplay of producers, listeners, and technical capabilities under the influence of institutions of media politics. Local radio cultures develop which manifest themselves in typical subjects, program formats, and everyday radio use practices. The most successful programs are interactive and facilitate discussion on social and political as well as personal problems. Technological dramas (Pfaffenberger) accompany the varied development of Beninese radio cultures

    Abstract: This volume demonstrates that a richer notion of spatiotemporal organization in the arts and beyond can allow contouring, especially in the interaction of different disciplines. Central to this is the concept of rhythm, which is meaningful for various artistic disciplines as well as history and cultural studies. The contributions follow up on the related concepts of balance and of meter, whereupon they formulate further theoretical perspectives which are a desideratum even in musicology.

The analyzed novels feature different kinds of music, from Indian classical to non-classical traditions, and from Western classical music to pop music and rock 'n' roll. Music is depicted as a cultural artifact and as a purely aestheticized art form at the same time. As a cultural artifact, music derives meaning from its socio-cultural context of production and serves as a frame of reference to explore postcolonial identities on their own terms. As purely aesthetic art, music escapes its contextual meaning. The transgressive qualities of music render it capable of expressing identities irrespective of origin and politics of location. Thereby, music in the novels marks a very productive space to imagine the postcolonial nation and to rewrite imperial history, to express the cultural hybridity of characters in-between nations, to analyze the state of the nation and life in the multicultural diaspora of contemporary Great Britain, and to explore the ramifications of cultural globalization versus cultural imperialism. It will be a useful research and teaching tool for those interested in postcolonial literature, music studies, cultural studies, contemporary literature and South-Asian literature"--

    Abstract: French concert music and jazz often enjoyed a special creative exchange across the period 1900–65. French modernist composers were particularly receptive to early African-American jazz during the interwar years, and American jazz musicians, especially those concerned with modal jazz in the 1950s and early 1960s, exhibited a distinct affinity with French musical impressionism. But despite a general, if contested, interest in the cultural interplay of classical music and jazz, few writers have probed the specific French music-jazz relationship in depth. In this book, Deborah Mawer sets such musical interplay within its historical-cultural and critical-analytical contexts, offering a detailed yet accessible account of both French and American perspectives. Blending intertextuality with more precise borrowing techniques, Mawer presents case studies on the musical interactions of a wide range of composers and performers, including Debussy, Satie, Milhaud, Ravel, Jack Hylton, George Russell, Bill Evans and Dave Brubeck73

    Abstract: Countries rarely disappear off the map. In the 20th century, only a few countries shared this fate with Yugoslavia. The dissolution of Yugoslavia led to the largest war in Europe since 1945, massive human rights violations and over 100,000 victims. Debating the End of Yugoslavia is less an attempt to re-write the dissolution of Yugoslavia, or to provide a different narrative, than to take stock and reflect on the scholarship to date. New sources and data offer fresh avenues of research avoiding the passion of the moment that often characterized research published during the wars and provide contemporary perspectives on the dissolution. The book outlines the state of the debate rather than focusing on controversies alone and maps how different scholarly communities have reflected on the dissolution of the country, what arguments remain open in scholarly discourse and highlights new, innovative paths to study the period.

    Abstract: Cairo Pop is the first book to examine the dominant popular music of Egypt, shababiyya. Scorned or ignored by scholars and older Egyptians alike, shababiyya plays incessantly in Cairo, even while Egyptian youth joined in mass protests against their government, which eventually helped oust longtime Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in early 2011. Living in Cairo at the time of the revolution, Daniel Gilman saw, and more importantly heard, the impact that popular music can have on culture and politics. Here he contributes a richly ethnographic analysis of the relationship between mass-mediated popular music, modernity, and nationalism in the Arab world.Before Cairo Pop, most scholarship on the popular music of Egypt focused on musiqa al-ṭarab. Immensely popular in the 1950s and '60s and even into the '70s, musiqa al-ṭarab adheres to Arabic musical theory, with non-Western scales based on tunings of the strings of the 'ud-the lute that features prominently, nearly ubiquitously, in Arabic music. However, today one in five Egyptians is between the ages of 15 and 24; half the population is under the age of 25. And shababiyya is their music of choice. By speaking informally with dozens of everyday young people in Cairo, Gilman comes to understand shababiyya as more than just a musical genre: sometimes it is for dancing or seduction, other times it propels social activism, at others it is simply sonic junk food.In addition to providing a clear Egyptian musical history as well as a succinct modern political history of the nation, Cairo Pop elevates the aural and visual aesthetic of shababiyya-and its role in the lives of a nation's youth

Im Frühjahr 2010 fand an der Universität Potsdam die erste internationale und interdisziplinäre Tagung zum Thema „Russische Küche und kulturelle Identität“ statt. Der vorliegende Sammelband enthält viele der dort vorgestellten Beiträge in Aufsatzform. Es sind kultur- und literaturwissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zu Essen und Trinken in Russland. Untersucht werden nicht nur die Bedeutung einzelner Speisen und Zubereitungsarten und die Mahlzeit als soziales Geschehen, sondern auch der Verzicht auf Nahrung, sei es freiwillig als Fasten, sei es erzwungen als Hunger. Eine andere Gruppe von Beiträgen geht der Rolle des Essens als literarischem Motiv nach, eine weitere bildlichen Darstellungen. Auch das Trinken wird bedacht. In der Kultur durchweg klar kodiert, eignen sich Essen und Trinken ganz besonders als literarische Zeichen, die in den Werken unterschiedlichste Funktionen übernehmen können. Als Ganzes eröffnen die Beiträge erste Durchblicke in ein großes und bislang oft vernachlässigtes Forschungsgebiet.

    Abstract: In Russian Idea--Jewish Presence, Professor Brian Horowitz follows the career paths of Jewish intellectuals, who, having fallen in love with Russian culture, were unceremoniously repulsed by outsiders. Horowitz relays the paradoxes of a synthetic Jewish and Russian self-consciousness in order to correct critics who have always considered Russians and Jews to be polar opposites and even enemies. In fact, the best Russian Jewish intellectuals--Semyon Dubnov, Maxim Vinaver, Mikhail Gershenzon, and a number of Zionist writers and thinkers--were actually inspired by Russian culture and attempted to develop a sui generis Jewish creativity in three languages on Russian soil.

Chapters address generational differences, literary polemics and experimentation, the heritage of pre-October Russian modernism, and the fate of individual writers and critics, offering a sweeping view of how exiles created a literary diaspora. The discussion moves beyond Russian studies to contribute to today's broad, cross-cultural study of the creative side of political and cultural displacement

    Abstract: Deniza Popova gibt einen umfassenden Einblick in die bulgarische Volksmusik und die Vielfalt ihrer Existenzformen. Es verwundert daher nicht, dass sie seit den 1960er Jahren nicht nur den Habitus des zeitgenössischen Menschen bestimmt, sondern auch den Schreibstil einer Reihe von Gegenwartsautoren beeinflusst hat. In den literarischen Texten von Jack Kerouac, Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, Rainald Goetz und Thomas Meinecke fungiert populäre Musik beispielsweise ganz explizit als Medium der Textkonstitution. Markus Tillmann verfolgt die dabei aufscheinenden intermedialen Zusammenhänge zwischen musikalischer und literarischer Produktionsästhetik von den Beat Poets über die Punk- und Industrial-Szene bis hin zur DJ Culture.

    Abstract: Main description: Rap - für die einen der Inbegriff des subversiven Widerstands einer marginalisierten Unterschicht, für die anderen klanglicher Ausdruck von Homophobie, Misogynie und Gewaltverherrlichung. Vergessen wird dabei oft, dass Rap in erster Linie Partymusik ist. Seit der Entstehung des Stils in den 1970er Jahren ist die HipHop-Kultur ein stark umkämpftes Terrain. Ayla Güler Saieds Studie legt den empirischen Fokus auf die Biographien von Rapperinnen und Rappern verschiedener Genres und bettet diese in die theoretische Analyse der Entstehungsgeschichten des HipHop in Deutschland und den USA ein. Auf diese Weise wird eine neue Perspektive auf das Phänomen Rap enthüllt, welche die Grenzen der hegemonialen Diskurse verschiebt.

    Abstract: Die für Russland seit jeher charakteristische symbolische Aufladung von nationalen Identitätskonflikten mit Geschlechtermetaphern zeigt sich auch in der postsowjetischen Zeit in ausgeprägter Form. Die Öffnung nach Westen geht einher mit der Konjunktur eines Geschlechtermodells, das den Mann als starken Macho und die Frau als schönes Sexobjekt preist. Daneben führt die Rückbesinnung auf eigene vorsowjetische Traditionen zur Propagierung patriarchalisch-orthodoxer Rollenbilder. Schließlich hinterlassen die gescheiterten Unisex-Experimente der Sowjetzeit, die zu einer massiven Verschiebung und Verunsicherung von Geschlechtsidentitäten geführt haben, bis heute unübersehbare Spuren in der russischen Gesellschaft. Auf diese Weise ergibt sich ein faszinierender Einblick in die Eigenart nationaler Identitätsdiskurse in Russland und in die Werkstatt kultureller Konstruktions- und Projektionsmechanismen überhaupt. Im vorliegenden Band werden die gegenwärtige Situation und die sowjetische Zeit am Beispiel von Literatur, Film und Neuen Medien untersucht.

    Abstract: Noisy, confrontational, and controversial, industrial music first emerged in the mid-1970s around bands and performance groups who combined avant-garde electronic music with the provocative attitude and style of punk rock. In its early days, bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire produced a genuinely radical form of music bent on recontextualizing the signs and methods of cultural authority in an attempt to liberate listeners from the trappings of modernity. But, as industrial music took on more and more elements of popular music over the course of the 1980s it slowly abandoned its mission. By the mid-1990s, it was seen as simply another style of pop music, and had ironically fallen into the trappings it sought by its very existence to destroy. In "Assimilate", S. Alexander Reed provides the first ever critical history of this fascinating and enigmatic genre tracing industrial music's trajectory from Throbbing Gristle's founding of the record label Industrial Music in 1976, to its peak in popularity on the back of the band Nine Inch Nails in the mid-1990s, and through its decline to the present day. Through a series of revealing explorations of works spanning the entirety of industrial music's past, and drawing on extensive interviews with musicians, record label owners, DJs, and concert promoters, Reed paints a thorough historical picture that includes not only the bands, but the structures that supported them, and the scenes they created. In so doing, he reveals an engaging story of an ideological disintegration and its aftermath. Mit seiner Internetplattform und einem gesonderten Verteiler informiert das forumNET.Ukraine aktuell und gezielt über Themen der deutsch-ukrainischen Beziehungen. Es führt außerdem und vorwiegend in Kooperation mit anderen Veranstaltungen durch, berät, begleitet und initiiert neue Vorhaben.     Abstract: Der Medienhype um Aggro Berlin, Sidos Beteiligung an der Casting-Show »Popstars« oder der Kinofilm »Zeiten ändern dich« des Bambi-Preisträgers Bushido zeigen: Gangsta-Rap ist auch in Deutschland zu einem zentralen Genre der Popkultur avanciert. Die Bildwelten der Gangsta-Rap-Kultur sind dabei nicht nur das Resultat von medienbasierten Glokalisierungsprozessen, sondern auch Bezugspunkte in einem Krisendiskurs um ethnisierte Jugendkriminalität oder deviante Männlichkeitsentwürfe. An der Schnittstelle von Soziologie und Kulturwissenschaft bieten die Beiträge in diesem Band einen Überblick über Bedeutung und Funktionsweise der Gangsta-Rap-Kultur.
    Abstract: Review text: »[Man] wünscht sich, das Buch wäre einige Jahre früher erschienen, als Gangsta-Rap noch zu den heißen Themen des Feuilletons zählte; noch bevor sich die Talkshowdauergäste Sido und Bushido zur kleinbürgerlichen Existenz bekannten. Andererseits erlaubt die zeitliche Distanz den Autoren, eben jene stereotypisierten Bilder äußerst kritisch unter die Lupe zu nehmen.     Abstract: Rap - für die einen der Inbegriff des subversiven Widerstands einer marginalisierten Unterschicht, für die anderen klanglicher Ausdruck von Homophobie, Misogynie und Gewaltverherrlichung. Vergessen wird dabei oft, dass Rap in erster Linie Partymusik ist. Seit der Entstehung des Stils in den 1970er Jahren ist die HipHop-Kultur ein stark umkämpftes Terrain. Ayla Güler Saieds Studie legt den empirischen Fokus auf die Biographien von Rapperinnen und Rappern verschiedener Genres und bettet diese in die theoretische Analyse der Entstehungsgeschichten des HipHop in Deutschland und den USA ein. Auf diese Weise wird eine neue Perspektive auf das Phänomen Rap enthüllt, welche die Grenzen der hegemonialen Diskurse verschiebt.

    Abstract: Mit ihrer Arbeit über die vermeintliche Mystifikation "Veda Slovena" schreibt sich die Verfasserin in ein Forschungsfeld ein, das seit fast 150 Jahren äußerst kontrovers diskutiert wird. Die Arbeit befasst sich zunächst mit der Frage, wie "Veda Slovena" durch Forscher und Interpreten als eine kulturpolitische und nationale Identitätsfolie instrumentalisiert bzw. mystifiziert wurde: Dies geschah sowohl am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts als auch in postsozialistischer Zeit, zugleich in Bulgarien, Mazedonien und Russland. Die kulturanthropologische und ethnologische Textanalyse erfasst darüber hinaus den Code der Liminalität im Textkorpus, wobei Übergangsmotive, Rituale und Topoi des Übergangs im Hinblick auf das Verhältnis von Mythos und Geschichte, Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit, christlich und muslimisch geprägte Formen der Volkskultur auf dem Balkan kommentiert werden.
