It analyses the role of 'vanity', defined as social status and self-esteem, in social and economic behaviours. In Veblen's theory of conspicuous consumption, vanity is associated with the consumption of luxuries such as expensive handbags and cars. In this book, C. Simon Fan provocatively argues that vanity is obtained by having a spouse and children with perceived 'high-quality' values, for example, a beautiful wife, a tall husband or intelligent offspring. He demonstrates from various perspectives that vanity plays a crucial role in male-female relationships and intergenerational relationships. In doing so, he challenges the conventional frontier of economics and contributes to other social sciences. This unique book will appeal to the educated general reader and interested academic alike.

    Abstract: This anthology examines the practical role of well-being in contemporary society. It discusses developments such as globalization, consumerism and the rapid innovation and use of new and emerging technologies and focuses on the significant impact of these developments on the well-being of people living today. The anthology brings together researchers from various disciplines, including psychology, economics, sociology, philosophy and development studies. It provides concrete insight on the role and importance of well-being in contemporary society, using a mix of empirical grounding, philosophical rigour and an emphasis on real-world applications. It is unique in that it seeks to understand the relation between well-being research and its application towards real problems. Dr. Johnny Hartz Søraker is Assistant Professor of Philosophy of technology at the Department of Philosophy, University of Twente. He defended his PhD cum laude at the same department, supervised by Prof. Dr. Philip Brey. The dissertation mainly dealt with the epistemology, ontology and ethics of virtual worlds, with a particular focus on their potential impact on personal well-being. Søraker's main research interests and publications lie in the intersections between Information Technology, on the one hand and both theoretical and practical philosophy, on the other. He often grounds his work in psychological research, especially work in the field of Positive Psychology and is developing this toward a comprehensive methodology entitled 'Prudential-Empirical Ethics of Technology (PEET)?.Jan-Willem van der Rijt is Lecturer in Political Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Bayreuth. His work addresses issues related to the topics of freedom, happiness and dignity, and has appeared in journals such as Economics and Philosophy, Law and Philosophy, Ethical Theory and Moral Practice, and Theory and Decision. Van der Rijt is author of The Importance of Assent: A Theory of Coercion and Dignity (Springer 2012).Jelle de Boer is a lecturer in philosophy at Delft University of Technology. His interests are in philosophy of social science, ethics and social theory. His recent topics of research concerned game theory and well-being. He has recently published in Philosopical Psychology, Biology and Philosophy, and Economics and Philosophy.Pak-Hang Wong is a Research Fellow on Climate Geoengineering Governance at the Institute for Science, Innovation and Society (InSIS) and Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, University of Oxford. He works primarily on philosophy and ethics of technology, but he is also interested in climate ethics, social theory, digital media studies, and science and technology studies.Philip Brey is professor of philosophy within the department of philosophy of the University of Twente.     Abstract: Auch die mit humanitären Zielen begründeten Interventionen der jüngsten Vergangenheit haben die Vorbehalte nicht beseitigen können, die in der Friedensforschung gegen gewaltsame Interventionen in Drittstaaten bestehen.     Abstract: Sex Scene suggests that what we have come to understand as the sexual revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s was actually a media revolution. In lively essays, the contributors examine a range of mass media-film and television, recorded sound, and publishing-that provide evidence of the circulation of sex in the public sphere, from the mainstream to the fringe. They discuss art films such as I am Curious (Yellow), mainstream movies including Midnight Cowboy, sexploitation films such as Mantis in Lace, the emergence of erotic film festivals and of gay pornography, the use of multimedia in sex education, and the sexual innuendo of The Love Boat. Scholars of cultural studies, history, and media studies, the contributors bring shared concerns to their diverse topics. They highlight the increasingly fluid divide between public and private, the rise of consumer and therapeutic cultures, and the relationship between identity politics and individual rights. The provocative surveys and case studies in this nuanced cultural history reframe the "sexual revolution" as the mass sexualization of our mediated world.Contributors.     Abstract: Georges Adéagbo zählt zu den bekanntesten Gegenwartskünstlern Afrikas. Seine ästhetische Praxis zwischen Kulturtransfer und Ortsspezifik setzt eine Auflösung kolonialkultureller Hierarchien zwischen Afrika und Europa in Gang, ohne Differenz zu nivellieren.     Abstract: Der Dominanzverlust weißer Männer, so begrüßenswert er ist, birgt Sprengstoff. Dazu gehört die Versuchung, Dezentrierung mit Marginalisierung und Privilegienabbau mit Diskriminierung zu verwechseln und sich am Ende als »Opfer der Opfer« zu bemitleiden. Die Attentate von Anders Breivik haben Gefahren einer sich bedroht fühlenden Männlichkeit sichtbar gemacht. Die Selbstreflexion weißer Männer ist seither überfällig. Sie ist aber auch heikel. Als Privilegierte können sie sich nicht in gleicher Weise thematisieren wie jene, die sich an die Ränder einer von ihnen beherrschten Welt verwiesen sehen. Die Freilegung des Dilemmas, in dem sich weiße Männer heute befinden, eröffnet einen Ausweg jenseits von Selbstmitleid und Selbstüberhebung.

    Abstract: Die Debatte um die »Krise der Repräsentation« hat in der Sozialforschung deutliche Spuren hinterlassen. In der Reflexion der Begleitforschung des kunstpädagogischen Projekts »sense&cyber« zum Einsatz Neuer Medien an vier Kunstschulen in Niedersachsen nimmt Claudia Lemke diese Spuren wieder auf. Seine Publikationen und Diskussionsbeiträge, seien es Studien zu bestimmten architektonischen Details oder den Rahmenbedingungen historischen Bauens, seien es Haus- und Ortsmonographien oder grundsätzliche Analysen baulicher Phänomene, haben eine Vielzahl von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern zum Weiterdenken und zur Diskussion angeregt.Dieser, anlässlich seines 65. Geburtstags von 20 Kolleginnen und Kollegen, beruflichen Weggefährten, Schülerinnen und Schülern verfasste Band würdigt die außergewöhnliche Leistung von Thomas Spohn mit einer Reise durch die Bau- und Architekturgeschichte Nord- und Westdeutschlands. Räumlich geht diese von der Insel Rügen über die Nordfriesischen Inseln und die Elbmarschen durch Niedersachsen bis nach Westfalen und ins Rheinland, mit einem Abstecher in die angrenzenden Niederlande.     Abstract: In einer 1908 erschienenen "Kampfschrift gegen die Geräusche unseres Lebens" ereiferte sich der Kulturphilosoph Theodor Lessing über das "Getobe unermesslich anschwellender Riesenstädte, in denen "einer auf des anderen Nervenklaviatur" spiele. Als große Lärmbelästigung empfand er vor allem die Musik: So mokierte Lessing sich über die "grauenhafte Unsitte" der Biermusiken und Promenadenkonzerte oder die "Tyrannei" des Klavierspiels bei geöffnetem Fenster. Derlei Beschwerden sind indes nur die Gegenseite einer sich seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert umfassend ausbreitenden urbanen populären Musikkultur, die dieser Band aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick nimmt.

    Abstract: Wie werden Ungeborene per Ultraschall 'ins Bild gesetzt'? Wie gestalten die Teilnehmer der klinischen Veranstaltung die soziale Beziehung, in die sie aufgrund des diagnostischen Tuns eingebunden sind? Birgit Heimerls Ethnografie zur Praxis vorgeburtlicher Sonografie und der sie begleitenden Beratungsgespräche fokussiert auf die klinische Situation und die situierten Praktiken, die auf Basis teilnehmender Beobachtung rekonstruiert werden. Die Analyse stützt sich auf die Mikrosoziologie Erving Goffmans und auf praxeologische Vorstellungen von Sozialität. Sie zeigt u.a., wie Ungeborene als epistemische Wissensobjekte der Pränataldiagnostik sonografisch artikuliert und 'verkörpert' werden und wie dies kommunikativ und interaktiv gerahmt wird. How do the unborn figure into the picture by ultrasound? How do the participants in a clinical session organize the social relationship in which they are involved for diagnostic purposes? Birgit Heimerl's ethnography on the practice of prenatal ultrasonography and accompanying consultation focuses on the clinical situation and situated practices, which are reconstructed on the basis of participant observation. The analysis draws on the micro-sociology of Erving Goffman and praxeological notions of sociality. It shows, among other things, how the unborn are sonographically expressed and »embodied« as epistemic objects of knowledge of prenatal diagnosis and how this is communicatively and interactively framed.
