    Abstract: David A. McDonald rethinks the conventional history of the Palestinian crisis through an ethnographic analysis of music and musicians, protest songs, and popular culture. Charting a historical narrative that stretches from the late-Ottoman period through the end of the second Palestinian intifada, McDonald examines the shifting politics of music in its capacity to both reflect and shape fundamental aspects of national identity. Drawing case studies from Palestinian communities in Israel, in exile, and under occupation, McDonald grapples with the theoretical and methodological challenges of tracing "resistance" in the popular imagination, attempting to reveal the nuanced ways in which Palestinians have confronted and opposed the traumas of foreign occupation. The first of its kind, this book offers an in-depth ethnomusicological analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, contributing a performative perspective to the larger scholarly conversation about one of the world's most contested humanitarian issues.     Abstract: Deniza Popova gibt einen umfassenden Einblick in die bulgarische Volksmusik und die Vielfalt ihrer Existenzformen. Durch ihren kulturanthropologischen und soziologischen Ansatz geht diese Studie weit über die musikethnologische Beobachtung und Beschreibung von traditioneller Musik hinaus. Sie hinterfragt die Anbindung und Funktion von Musik sowohl im gesellschaftspolitischen und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Kontext als auch im Identitätskonzept des Einzelnen. So werden die im Titel aufgeführten Begriffe "Authentizität", "Medialität" und "Identität" mit zahlreichen möglichen Definitionen und Verständnissen konfrontiert. Eine aus der etischen Perspektive geschriebene Wissenschaftsgeschichte der bulgarischen Musikethnologie, eine Monographie des rhodopischen Dorfes Dobral#k und zahlreiche Beispiele für die Transformationsbewegungen von "authentischer Musik" in andere musikalische Genres und Funktionsbereiche (z.B.     Abstract: Noisy, confrontational, and controversial, industrial music first emerged in the mid-1970s around bands and performance groups who combined avant-garde electronic music with the provocative attitude and style of punk rock. In its early days, bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire produced a genuinely radical form of music bent on recontextualizing the signs and methods of cultural authority in an attempt to liberate listeners from the trappings of modernity. But, as industrial music took on more and more elements of popular music over the course of the 1980s it slowly abandoned its mission. By the mid-1990s, it was seen as simply another style of pop music, and had ironically fallen into the trappings it sought by its very existence to destroy. In "Assimilate", S. Alexander Reed provides the first ever critical history of this fascinating and enigmatic genre tracing industrial music's trajectory from Throbbing Gristle's founding of the record label Industrial Music in 1976, to its peak in popularity on the back of the band Nine Inch Nails in the mid-1990s, and through its decline to the present day. Through a series of revealing explorations of works spanning the entirety of industrial music's past, and drawing on extensive interviews with musicians, record label owners, DJs, and concert promoters, Reed paints a thorough historical picture that includes not only the bands, but the structures that supported them, and the scenes they created. In so doing, he reveals an engaging story of an ideological disintegration and its aftermath. The definitive text on the genre, "Assimilate" is essential reading for fans of industrial music, and scholars and students of popular music alike.

    Abstract: Rap - für die einen der Inbegriff des subversiven Widerstands einer marginalisierten Unterschicht, für die anderen klanglicher Ausdruck von Homophobie, Misogynie und Gewaltverherrlichung. Vergessen wird dabei oft, dass Rap in erster Linie Partymusik ist. Seit der Entstehung des Stils in den 1970er Jahren ist die HipHop-Kultur ein stark umkämpftes Terrain. Ayla Güler Saieds Studie legt den empirischen Fokus auf die Biographien von Rapperinnen und Rappern verschiedener Genres und bettet diese in die theoretische Analyse der Entstehungsgeschichten des HipHop in Deutschland und den USA ein. Auf diese Weise wird eine neue Perspektive auf das Phänomen Rap enthüllt, welche die Grenzen der hegemonialen Diskurse verschiebt.

Es verwundert daher nicht, dass sie seit den 1960er Jahren nicht nur den Habitus des zeitgenössischen Menschen bestimmt, sondern auch den Schreibstil einer Reihe von Gegenwartsautoren beeinflusst hat. In den literarischen Texten von Jack Kerouac, Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, Rainald Goetz und Thomas Meinecke fungiert populäre Musik beispielsweise ganz explizit als Medium der Textkonstitution. Markus Tillmann verfolgt die dabei aufscheinenden intermedialen Zusammenhänge zwischen musikalischer und literarischer Produktionsästhetik von den Beat Poets über die Punk- und Industrial-Szene bis hin zur DJ Culture.
