    Abstract: Seit 2000 gilt in der Europäischen Union das Antidiskriminierungsgesetz. Der Bedarf, Daten über die Ethnizität von Menschen zu erheben, ist seither deutlich gewachsen. Am Beispiel des britischen Zensus zeigt Linda Supik, dass die statistische Erfassung von Ethnizität zwar unvermeidlich rassifizierende Effekte hervorbringt. Sie macht Rassismus aber auch als strukturelles Problem europäischer Gesellschaften thematisierbar, sichtbar und gezielt bekämpfbar

    Abstract: Deutschland ist wie seine europäischen Nachbarländer zu einem Einwanderungsland geworden. In Deutschland leben heute Menschen aus 190 Nationen zusammen. Die hier gesammelten Beiträge der Tagung Einwanderungsland Deutschland. Wie kann Integration aus ethnologischer Sicht gelingen? greifen Fragen des Zusammenlebens von Menschen unterschiedlicher Ethnien, Kulturen, Religionen und Nationen auf und suchen in dieser gesellschaftspolitischen Debatte bei der Diskussion um die komplexen Fragestellungen von Migration und Integration stets den interdisziplinären Zugang.     Description / Table of Contents: "Aspirations, desires, opportunism and exploitation are fundamental elements of the ways in which donor-driven development intervenes in the lives of people in poor countries. Alongside structural and material interventions, emotional engagements are central to processes of social change and the making of selves for those caught up in development's slipstream. Intimate Economies of Development: Mobility, Sexuality and Health in Asia elaborates this proposition by showing that culture, sexuality and health are inevitably and inseparably linked within specific trajectories of modernization in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. As mobility and migration increase and opportunities proliferate throughout Asia, different cultural groups increasingly interact as a result of both targeted interventions and all-consuming trends of socio-economic change; but they do so with different capabilities and expectations. This book engages with issues of moral frameworks and sexual rights discourses but uniquely grounds its arguments in interlocking details of people's everyday lives and aspirations in developing Asia. Part and parcel of this widening landscape of mobility and contingent intimacy is the ever-present threats of infectious disease, most prominently HIV/AIDS, and people-trafficking. Thus, impact assessment and targeted interventions aiming to address negative consequences frequently accompany infrastructure development. This path-breaking book, drawn on more than 20 years of ethnographic research in the Mekon region, shows clearly how current models of mitigation are inadequate as subjective experiences and aspirations are profoundly enmeshed in strategies of livelihood improvement."--

With this in mind, OSSREA's invitation to conduct a study on international migration in Africa had the following objectives: To analyze the nature and type of South-South migration, focusing on issues, such as brain gain and/or brain drain, remittance flows, technical knowhow transfers, violations of the right of African migrants and gender dimensions of migration; To investigate the dynamics of migration from Eastern and Southern Africa to the Arab Gulf States as well as to developed countries, focusing on the skills of migrants, brain gain and/or drain, remittance flows, technical know-how transfers, violations of the rights of African migrants and gender dimension of migrants; and to assess the successes, impediments and challenges of African international migrants from Eastern and Southern Africa and to formulate policy recommendations to maximize the gains and minimize the costs associated with international migration in Africa

    Abstract: Politics and religion have been major forces throughout history, and they still are as anyone who pays attention to current events can see. Understandably, the relationship between religion and politics calls for careful and ongoing scholarly exploration. At the same time, global centers of economic and military power are shifting from being concentrated in the West (Europe and North America) to areas in Asia, the world’s largest landmass and home to the bulk of the world’s population. Indeed, the twenty-first century is already shaping up to be the «Asian century». Perhaps not surprisingly, just as in the West, so in Asia, societies have been – and are still being – shaped by religious and political forces. Sacred Matters, Stately Concerns: Faith and Politics in Asia, Past and Present examines the complex and intertwined nature of «politics» and «religion» in diverse cultures within Asia, ranging from China and Japan to Indonesia, Pakistan, and India. By their very nature, the essays included here defy easy generalizations about the nature of religion in various societies, forcing us to rethink, and, one hopes, pushing us beyond staid assumptions. Certainly, these essays challenge prevailing views of national/political boundaries in Asia (and by extension elsewhere), and highlight the fact that the «separation of Church and State», a hallmark of the American political system, has rarely been observed in other places and times.     Abstract: Durch Migration entstehen vielfältige Formen der Mobilität, die verschiedene Orte, Lebensweisen und Visionen miteinander verbinden. Menschen, die migrieren, schaffen Räume, die sich sowohl von denen unterscheiden, die sie verlassen haben, als auch von jenen, die neu bezogen wurden. So werden Strukturen, Kulturen und Kommunikationsformen erschaffen, die ohne Impulse durch Migration kaum denkbar wären. Die Lebenspraxis zeigt, dass Menschen mehrere Heimaten und Zugehörigkeiten haben, diverse kulturelle und soziale Netzwerke schaffen können und dass sie mit negativen Zuschreibungen von außen kreativ und subversiv umzugehen wissen. Auf diese Weise entwickeln sich postmigrantische, mehrheimische, hybride und transkulturelle Alltagspraktiken, die bisher kaum gewürdigt worden sind. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes verstehen sich daher als Plädoyer für eine andere Sicht der Dinge und als Absage an das vorauseilende Misstrauen, mit dem migrationsbedingten Phänomenen häufig begegnet wird. Zülfukar Cetin zeichnet die Geschichte und historische Entwicklung der Diskriminierung plausibel nach und zeigt, dass die Homophobie aus den Prämissen der Heteronormativität und den daraus folgenden Normalisierungsprozessen resultiert.Die Studie macht deutlich, dass die untersuchten Diskriminierungsbegriffe eng mit der Macht des Diskurses verbunden sind.

Oder unterliegt sie der Gefahr, sich in ethnischen Zuschreibungen zu verstricken?Kathrin Hahn untersucht den Stellenwert von Ethnizität und Kultur im sozialpädagogischen Handeln. Sie geht der Frage nach, inwiefern ethnische Differenzierungen in Beratungen der Altenhilfe Geltung erlangen und wirksam werden.     Abstract: Germany is dependent on highly qualified migrant workers in order to maintain its economic competitive advantage. Foreign students at German universities in particular - which may be temporary or permanent migrants - represent a valuable resource in view of the foreseen lack of skilled workers. The volume discusses the question of how migrants can be won for the German third level education system and how they can be integrated into the German job market after graduation. The study describes the process from initial third level education enrolment right down to the job market integration and offers information about obstacles and migration law framework conditions. The data used in the study was collected within the scope of the sponsorship programme "Integration via Qualification" (Integration durch Qualifizierung - IQ) It was intended to close knowledge gaps and to provide action recommendations for federal ministries and institutions. Deutschland ist auf hochqualifizierte Migrantinnen und Migranten angewiesen, um seine wirtschaftliche Wettbewerbsfähigkeit weiterhin behaupten zu können. Besonders ausländische Studierende an deutschen Hochschulen sind - als temporäre oder als permanente Migrantinnen und Migranten - eine wertvolle Ressource mit Blick auf den prognostizierten Fachkräftemangel. Der Band beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie Migrantinnen und Migranten für das tertiäre Bildungssystem gewonnen und nach ihrem Abschluss in den Arbeitsmarkt integriert werden können. Die Studie beschreibt den Ablauf vom Hochschulzugang bis zur Arbeitsmarktintegration und informiert über Hindernisse sowie migrationsrechtliche Rahmenbedingungen. Die Daten für die Studie wurden im Rahmen des Förderprogramms "Integration durch Qualifizierung-IQ" erstellt und ausgewertet. Sie sollen Wissenslücken schließen und Handlungsempfehlungen für Ministerien und Institutionen geben.

    Abstract: Deutschland ist wie seine europäischen Nachbarländer zu einem Einwanderungsland geworden. In Deutschland leben heute Menschen aus 190 Nationen zusammen. Es sind Fragen von Flucht, Migration und Integration, die die politische Bildungsarbeit maßgeblich beschäftigen. Integration geschieht nicht von selbst – sie ist vielmehr eine Aufgabe, die im Hinblick auf eine zukunftsfähige Gesellschaft gestaltet werden muss. Die hier gesammelten Beiträge der Tagung Einwanderungsland Deutschland. Wie kann Integration aus ethnologischer Sicht gelingen? greifen Fragen des Zusammenlebens von Menschen unterschiedlicher Ethnien, Kulturen, Religionen und Nationen auf und suchen in dieser gesellschaftspolitischen Debatte bei der Diskussion um die komplexen Fragestellungen von Migration und Integration stets den interdisziplinären Zugang. Ziel der Tagung war es, ein Forum für eine Diskussion zwischen Theorie und Praxis zu bieten, um so gemeinsam zu erörtern, wie Integration gelingen kann. Thematisiert werden Schlagwörter wie Inklusion, Migrationsforschung und Kultur, zudem werden Zusammenhänge zwischen Religion, Bildung sowie Medien und Integration untersucht. Des Weiteren werden Ergebnisse ethnologischer Forschungen präsentiert, um Impulse für eine erfolgreiche Integration zu geben. Abgerundet wird dieser Band mit der Vorstellung von ethnologischen Projekten, die bereits einen Beitrag zur Integration leisten.     Abstract: Das Konzept »transnationaler Räume« hat der Migrationssoziologie neue Impulse gegeben. Wenig Beachtung hingegen fand bisher die Pendelmigration deutsch-polnischer Doppelstaatler aus Oberschlesien - einer Region, die aus der ehemaligen Peripherie Deutschlands wie Polens inzwischen mitten in ein vereintes Europa gerückt ist.Dabei macht die wechselvolle Geschichte dieser historischen Grenzregion sie geradezu zu einem Paradebeispiel für das Phänomen »Transnationalismus«.     Abstract: Der deutsch- und englischsprachige Band enthält neun Essays von bekannten KanadistInnen aus Österreich, Deutschland und Kanada, die sich mit Immigration nach und Integration in Nordamerika beschäftigen: Wie wird dieses aktuelle Problem in Kanada bewältigt? Könnte das offiziell multikulturelle Kanada für Länder wie Österreich und Frankreich ein Muster sein? Neben der gelungenen Integration, die sich in Romanen von selbst nach Kanada eingewanderten ErzählerInnen spiegelt, belegen ethnische Autobiographien die früher auch in Kanada häufigen Probleme. Das Spannungsverhältnis beim transkulturellen Übergang erscheint als mögliche Inspirationsquelle, wobei Schriftsteller aus der Karibik ergiebige Untersuchungsobjekte sind. Die Einwanderung aus Österreich kommt ebenso zur Sprache wie die spezifische Auseinandersetzung mit der Immigration in Quebec, wo das Konzept des Interkulturalismus dominiert, sowie das Schicksal von Millionen illegaler Einwanderer in den USA. The volume comprises nine essays by prominent Canadianists from Austria, Germany and Canada who investigate in comparative fashion the problems of emigration / immigration to and integration in North America and some European countries, especially Austria and France. They inquire how this challenge has been met in Canada since the official adoption of multiculturalism and reflect on the possibility of Canada serving as a model for Europe. While contemporary novels by immigrants to Canada provide evidence of successful integration, ethnic autobiographies remind us of the existence of problems and prejudices in former times. The tensions experienced in the course of a transcultural transfer are shown to be a potential source of inspiration, with authors of Caribbean background providing fruitful examples. The waves of immigration from Austria are also described as is the specific approach to the challenge of immigration in the province of Quebec, through the adoption of the concept of interculturalism. Both the problems linked to immigration in France and the issue of the millions of undocumented immigrants from Latin America in the USA are considered.

    Abstract: In diesem Buch treten erstmalig männliche Individuen in den Fokus, die türkischer Herkunft und zugleich homosexuell sind - eine Identitätskultur zwischen ethnischer und sexueller Marginalisierung, die bisher vor allem von Stereotypen geprägt ist.Neben Interviews analysiert Wenzel Bilger auch die seit den 1990er-Jahren aufkommenden künstlerischen und politischen »Repräsentationen« dieser spezifischen Identitätskultur durch Filme, Theaterstücke und politische Diskurse, in denen sich ein normatives Integrationsmodell und eine Kritik an einer diskriminierenden Mehrheitskultur gegenüberstehen.Die Studie im Schnittpunkt von Postcolonial und Queer Studies zeigt, dass sich ein »schwuler Deutschtürke« in der liberalen Gesellschaft integrieren kann, wenn er sich in ambivalenten Performativen entethnisiert.

    Abstract: This book looks at sovereignty as a particular form of power and politics. It shows that the fate of bodies in the transition from life to death can provide a key to understanding fundamental ways in which sovereignty is claimed and performed. The contributions analyse (post-)conflict as well as non-conflict contexts, which too often are studied in isolation from one another. Focusing on contemporary issues rather than the equally important historical dimensions, they all grapple with the questions of who governs the dead bodies, how, why and with what effects. The book analyses how dead bodies are placed and dealt with in spaces between competing, overlapping and nested sovereign orders, under normal as well as exceptional conditions. It looks at contributions that draw on psychoanalysis, critical theory, the structuralist-functionalist anthropology of burial rituals and recent ideas of agency and materiality. The book first explains the efforts of states to contain and separate out dead bodies in particular sites. It explores the ways in which such efforts of containment are negotiated and contested in struggles between different entities that claim the dead bodies. The book then shows how entities that claim sovereignty produce effects of sovereignty by challenging and transgressing the laws regarding the legitimate use of violence and how dead bodies should be treated with dignity

    Abstract: Die Sowjetunion bildete Hunderttausende junge AfrikanerInnen aus. Heute lebt in Moskau und St. Petersburg eine zahlenmäßig kleine, aber aktive afrikanische Community, deren Kern aus ehemaligen Bildungsmigranten besteht. Diese interdisziplinäre Studie erweitert das Untersuchungsgebiet der internationalen Black Studies auf Russland. Sie beschäftigt sich mit der Geschichte der Bildungsmigration aus dem subsaharischen Afrika und fokussiert vor allem die postsowjetische Zeit, in der eine wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftspolitische Transformation in Russland sowie in afrikanischen Staaten stattfand. Um wirtschaftliche, rechtliche, soziale und kulturelle Aspekte der afrikanischen Bildungsmigration besser zu verstehen, werden sowjetische bzw. russische Afrika-Diskurse untersucht sowie empirische Daten aus den zwischen 2006 und 2010 durchgeführten Interviews mit Experten, Aktivisten afrikanischer Organisationen und Bildungsmigranten ausgewertet. Welche Faktoren bestimmen die Zuwanderung und Lebenssituation afrikanischer Bildungsmigranten und ihre Interaktion mit der Bevölkerung Russlands? Welche Afrika-Diskurse existierten in der Sowjetunion? Wie verwandelten sie sich in der Populärkultur und in der öffentlichen Meinung nach 1991? Wie weit werden sie von alltäglichen Vorurteilen, Stereotypen und Wertungen geprägt? Wie sehen afrikanische Bildungsmigranten Russland? Wie begegnen sie dem russischen Afrika-Bild und welche Auswirkungen hat dies auf ihre Lebenssituation, Identitätsbildung, Selbstdarstellung und Überlebensstrategien?     Abstract: In den bisherigen Forschungen zu »muslimischen« Denkerinnen und Denkern sind die dichotomisch verwendeten Begriffe »Moderne« und »Islam« zentral. Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

    Abstract: This volume explores the normative foundations of fair(er) relations in the immigration society. The focus is on the concept of solidarity. Beyond a »solidarity among intimates«, immigration society solidarity designates an active practice, which while not necessarily commonality-based, entails both a concrete opponent as well as a political concept of society. This idea is questioned and further developed in the contributions in terms of its theoretical, moral, educational, philosophical, and sociological dimensions.

    Abstract: Kann es eine Islamfeindlichkeit ohne die Religion des Islam geben? Naime Cakir zeigt, dass nicht allein die Terroranschläge des 11. September 2001 für die zunehmenden antiislamischen Vorurteile und Feindbilder in Deutschland verantwortlich sind, sondern auch die Erkenntnis, dass die ehemaligen Gastarbeiter ihren Lebensmittelpunkt auf Dauer in die Bundesrepublik verlegt haben und nun für sich beanspruchen, Objekt von Verantwortung zu sein. Damit waren für die Residenzgesellschaft und für die Einwanderer die etablierten Rollen des Gastgebers und des Gastes irritiert. Die Studie zeichnet nach, wie der Islam zum Gegenstand öffentlicher Anerkennungskonflikte gemacht worden ist, da es einer Neujustierung der Rollen innerhalb des Gesellschaftsgefüges bedurfte, die die Marginalisierung der mittlerweile etablierten Einwanderer weiterhin zu gewährleisten hatte

    Abstract: In today’s Europe, migrant domestic workers are indispensable in supporting many households which, without their employment, would lack sufficient domestic and care labour. Black Girls collects and explores the stories of some of the first among these workers. They are the Afro-Surinamese and the Eritrean women who in the 1960s and 70s migrated to the former colonising country, the Netherlands and Italy respectively, and there became domestic and care workers. Sabrina Marchetti analyses the narratives of some of these women in order to powerfully demonstrate how the legacies of the colonial past have been, at the same time, both their tool of resistance and the reason for their subordination

    Abstract: The papers collected in this volume congeal around a debate about the ways and extent of the dominance of linear time and progressive history and the concomitant delineation of the nation in Chinese and Japanese historiography. As China and Japan entered the global capitalist system of nation states, the Chinese and Japanese regimes implemented a number of reforms, which resulted in transformations that affected everyday experience. In the face of imperialism and the perceived threat of being split up, the Meiji and late Qing governments radically reoriented policies in order to become wealthy and powerful in the global arena. People not only began to experience time and space in new ways, but elites also were increasingly exposed to Western theories of history and concepts of nationhood, which became dominant. These changes contributed to the production of new types of historical consciousness and collective identity. The essays in this volume each provide a perspective on the complex ways in which imagining national and regional identity in East Asia were and continue to be enmeshed with visions of time and history. This book should be of interest to all those who are interested in nationalism, modernity in China and Japan, global capitalism and the politics of time
