Abstract: "At the Crossroads of Knowledge" ist eine Masterarbeit, die in einem dialogischen und künstlerischen Ansatz für die Verleihung des akademischen Grades Master of Arts in Kulturwissenschaften an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin im Jahr 2023 erstellt wurde.
Abstract: “At the Crossroads of Knowledge” is a Master's Thesis created in a dialogical and artistic approach for the award of the academic degree Master of Arts in Cultural Studies by the Humboldt University of Berlin in 2023. Created from the conjoining of seemingly disparate fields of knowledge, such as Religion, Spirituality, (Western modern) Science, Occult Sciences, Art Theory and Aesthetics, and beyond, this publication is a feminist undertaking against the Patriarchy through the reenchantment of the world (building upon criticisms on 'die Entzauberung der Welt', Max Weber 1921). The importance of this volume lies in its decolonial proposal of an embodied 'spiritual mestizaje' (Gloria Anzaldúa, 1987; Theresa Delgadillo, 2011) through the spiritual-scientific process of undoing capitalist patriarchal disciplinary thinking, in the hopes of achieving a true “emancipation of the subaltern classes” (Antonio Gramsci, 1971), especially the emancipation of women and their ancestral knowledge of the Occult. More than a pop hors d’ouevre revisionism of the Witch Hunts, this work is a dawn song from the marginalised, in the wake of a new historical period marked by feminist revolutions.

Abstract: Englische Version: This doctoral dissertation explores to what extent local negotiations of far-right contestations contribute to the latter’s normalisation. The project is prompted by the crux that even though the central role of cities and local participatory planning processes in countering far-right contestations is widely acknowledged, far-right contestations have hardly been challenged. It seeks to address two scholarly blind spots: First, mainstream accounts engaging with the question of how municipalities deal with far-right contestations have largely externalised the far right from urban democracy. Consequently, the current literature is not able to grasp how far-right agendas and ideologies can indeed be normalised within local participatory processes. Second, the actors and processes involved in the local negotiation of far-right contestations remain understudied. To fill these gaps, the cumulative dissertation connects discussions on urban governance with recent debates on the rise of the far right. The methodological framework of this thesis consists of a qualitative, explorative single-case study in the city of Cottbus, Germany. The analysis reveals that the liberal narratives of externalisation create a false dichotomy between far-right contestations and local negotiations in liberal democracies in a threefold way. First, they ignore how far-right contestations can be strengthened within traditional deliberative processes, as their promise of equal participation for all citizens is juxtaposed with the inability of such processes to re-negotiate the power relations aggravating the social inequalities giving rise to the far right in the first place. Second, by externalising the divisiveness propagated by far-right contestations, they overlook the interconnectedness between racism and the institutions governing cities, which offers points of contact for far-right ideology. [...]
Abstract: Englische Version: This dissertation focuses on ethnic discrimination in contemporary recruitment. According to dual process theories, attitudes can guide recruitment behavior when recruiters do not have sufficient time and motivation to control their behavior. But it is unclear whether contemporary recruitment is affected by ethnic discrimination and what psychological mechanisms drive this discrimination. I conducted three empirical studies to fill this research gap: a qualitative interview study, a panel study, and two online experiments. I found evidence that contemporary recruitment may indeed be affected by discrimination. The content analysis revealed that active sourcing approach and outside recruitment are potentially affected by ethnic discrimination. There was no support for the assumption that selection and assessment in contemporary recruitment is implicitly driven. A data-driven analysis revealed three sources of ethnic discrimination in contemporary recruitment: the recruiters’ own prejudices, the hiring managers’ request to sort certain candidate groups out, and the recruiters’ assumptions about companies’ preferences. The panel analysis found quantitative support for the assumption that marginalized group members are actively sourced less often. In a mixed logistic model, I found evidence that women, older employees, and employees born in Southern/Eastern Europe were actively sourced less often and that women were offered jobs less often. In the experiments, I compared the impact of recruiters’ own prejudices and meta-stereotyping—that is, assumptions about companies’ preferences—on the assessment of minority candidates. It turned out that meta-stereotyping showed larger effects on the assessment of the hiring chances of ethnic minorities than recruiters’ own prejudices. [...]

Abstract: There is an intimate relationship between clothes and identity. Clothes express our ideas, values and social norms to others. Therefore, dresses can be utilized to explore and explain the identity transformation from an older to a newer socio-cultural context. This dissertation reads the shifts in Egyptian Muslim women's attitude towards modern dress and clothing style and their entanglement with gender, nationalism, faith, and socio-economic contexts starting from the 19th century from a post-colonial perspective. I rely on fashion and post-colonial theories to address three sets of questions: (i) to what extent do the shifts in socio-economic and political discourses construct gender norms and redefine the feminist quest concerning clothing choice in modern / post-colonial Egypt? (ii) Can we read fashion as a resistance strategy to Egyptian patriarchal forces and hegemonic Western secular modernity in contemporary post-colonial Egypt? (iii) How does fashion disrupt the claimed monolithic Muslim women's identity? Finally, I discuss how Leila Aboulela's literary texts deconstruct the claimed fixed relationship between modernity and its assumed emancipating values and Western dress in her texts Lyrics Alley (2010) and Bird Summons (2019). The term "clothes" is used mainly to refer to the process of veiling and unveiling as an expression of a feminist quest of Egyptian women in the public sphere.

Abstract: Englische Version: The present work is an ethnographic study of young Uyghur minkaohan women living in Urumchi, the capital city of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) in China’s far northwest. The focus of this study lies on a third generation of minkaohan who were educated at Han Chinese schools (with Mandarin as the medium of instruction) around the turn of the new millennium. Participant observation and interviews were conducted over a nine-month period of fieldwork in Urumchi. The main themes that emerged from the analysis of the fieldwork data include: managing language competence; choosing a marriage partner; learning about normative female gender roles; defining a personal understanding of religious belief and practice, as well as consuming global popular culture in order to perform the ideal of an independent and self-determined woman. Inner-Uyghur notions of a fixed minkaohan/minkaomin binary, which equates being minkaomin with normative, authentic Uyghurness and being minkaohan with abnormal, exceptional Uyghurness, plays a crucial role here. The terms minkaohan and minkaomin need to be understood as discursive categories embedded in the broader socio-economic and political context of Uyghur people’s position as an ethnic minority group in the PR China. This study investigates how the women perceive, question, and utilize the idea of a minkaohan/minkaomin binary and frame it within the state’s majority/minority discourse in order to renegotiate, position, and redefine Self and Other. The broader purpose of this study is to highlight the diversity of Uyghur communities in China and focus on relations between different Uyghur communities in Urumchi – a topic, which is neglected not only by the Chinese state discourse on Uyghurs but often also by Western academic literature centered on Han-Uyghur relations.

Abstract: Diese Dissertation betrachtet verschiedene Schritte einer sozialwissenschaftlichen Erhebung zur Integration Geflüchteter in Deutschland.
Abstract: This dissertation looks at the different steps in the process of conducting a survey on refugees living in Germany and discusses key focal points of integration research. In four different articles, I discuss the novel sampling strategy used in a survey of refugees, analyze the effects of missing questionnaire languages, test latent constructs for measurement invariance, and discuss the analysis of economic integration in a changing migration regime. In the first article, I propose a sequential sampling strategy to sample refugees in times of high immigration. In the second article, I show that the lack of questionnaires in a respondent’s mother tongue increases item nonresponse. Providing additional audio recordings of the questions does not diminish this effect. In the third article, I use conceptions of democracy as a case study to show that latent constructs in multi-cultural and multi-linguistic surveys face specific challenges and limitations in their comparability. By employing tests for measurement invariance, my results show that conceptions of democracy are likely not comparable across countries of origin or across languages. The fourth and last article looks at the economic integration of refugees. In it, I propose that integration trajectories have to be observed within the specific institutional settings in which they take place. Fixed-effects regression analyses combined with a coarsened exact matching lead to the conclusion that a secure residence permit and participation in integration classes lead to increasing investments in future labor market access of refugees in Germany.

Abstract: Englische Version: This thesis follows "German cemeteries" that still exist in Southeast Banat in Serbia, once part of the Habsburg Military Frontier, today a borderland between Serbia, Romania and Hungary. I am interested in how abandoned, demolished, forgotten, and reconstructed cemeteries with German-inscribed gravestones mirror rhythms of the past and present. These very inscriptions convey entangled stories about Germans and Jews. Nowadays, they are primarily absent neighbors. For this reason, I adopt a narratological perspective in which cemeteries, monuments and memorials, archives and oral interviews act as narrative instances bearing worldness. In attempting to reconstruct the worlds behind, the study asks how remaining people narratively create distinct, often conflictual and yet close storyworlds about absent Jews and Germans and their past in the region, the Holocaust and forced displacement after the Second World War (Vertreibung). With whose memories are the new realities filled? Who inhabits these? Whose history counts? Combining empirical work with concepts bridging history/ memory, the anthropology of death and violence, narratology, and literary fictional texts and images, the thesis explores stories retold and memories silenced, repressed, and haunting.

Abstract: Feeling Exclusion: Religious Conflict, Exile and Emotions in Early Modern Europe investigates the emotional experience of exclusion at the heart of the religious life of persecuted and exiled individuals and communities in early modern Europe. Between the late fifteenth and early eighteenth centuries an unprecedented number of people in Europe were forced to flee their native lands and live in a state of physical or internal exile as a result of religious conflict and upheaval. Drawing on new insights from history of emotions methodologies, Feeling Exclusion explores the complex relationships between communities in exile, the homelands from which they fled or were exiled, and those from whom they sought physical or psychological assistance. It examines the various coping strategies religious refugees developed to deal with their marginalization and exclusion, and investigates the strategies deployed in various media to generate feelings of exclusion through models of social difference, that questioned the loyalty, values, and trust of "others". Accessibly written, divided into three thematic parts, and enhanced by a variety of illustrations, Feeling Exclusion is perfect for students and researchers of early modern emotions and religion.

The West African Sahel is predicted to be heavily affected by climate change in the future. Slow-onset environmental changes, such as increasing rainfall variability and rising temperature, are presumed to worsen the livelihood conditions and to increase the out-migration from the affected regions. Based on qualitative and Quantitative data from study areas in Mali and Senegal, this book examines the relationship between population dynamics, livelihoods and environment in the Sahel region, focussing specifically on motives for migration. Critiquing the assumption that environmental stress is the dominating migration driver, the author demonstrates the important role of individual aspirations and social processes, such as educational opportunities and the pull of urban lifestyles. In doing so, the book provides a more nuanced picture of the environment-migration nexus, arguing that slow-onset environmental changes may actually be less important as drivers of migration in the Sahel than they are often depicted in the media and climate change literature. This is a valuable resource for academics and students of environmental sociology, migration and development studies. -- Conclusion and outlook: Rethinking migration and environmental change in the West African Sahel.

Abstract: The thesis analyses the spanish 15M movement in the context of crisis protests. It focusses on the strategies, effects and overall processes of transnationalization. With qualitative methods such as interviews and participant observation it develops an ethnographic and multi-local research approach with which practises and self-perceptions of the actors in Madrid and Berlin is shown. At this juncture the author strengthens the interrelations of social movements and transnational (innereuropean) migration in a constellation of crisis, which produce an own mode of europeanization. It becomes apparent that the political practise continues and takes effect at different sites through the reorganisation under the same labels. The work shows how the actors create a space of possibilities during the erosion of their living conditions and gain self empowerment through two forms of movements: first with the active participation in a social movement, second with the mobile movement in the migration. The analytical combination of approaches dealing with theories on crisis, social movements and migration is very productive. It relates the work in the new field of ethnographic reflexive research on europeanization.

Abstract: The present dissertation analyzes the integration behavior of Chinese immigrants in Germany through a case study in a new perspective: The Chinese in Germany reconstruct the Chinese identity for their children and themselves by learning the Chinese so that they can be better recognized and integrated in Germany. In short: Parents let their children learn to become Chinese so they can live better in Germany. Their carefully organized and reconstructed ethnic identity, as the product of the integration strategy, acts as the lever be-tween their two living worlds so that they can improve their chances, especially in Germany.

Abstract: A look at the innovation divisions of internationally active corporations such as Intel, Google, Nokia, IBM or Deutsche Telekom reveals that large companies rely on ethnographic research for their innovation development. Under names such as Business Anthropology, Corporate Ethnography, Commercial Ethnography, and others, a branch of ethnology and cultural anthropology has emerged, dealing with the use of ethnography in the private sector. This dissertation is situated in the discourse on ethnography in the service of the private economy. It is about ethnography that is used to identify latent needs and desires as well as everyday problems of users and to develop ideas for innovative products and services that fit into the life experiences of the users. With the help of the case study of an ethnographic user research for the project FLEX 2.0 at the team User Driven Innovation (UDI) in the Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-Labs), an example is presented of how ethnography is understood in the private sector and how it can be carried out. One of the central aspects of this dissertation is to discuss whether the use in this context has an impact on ethnography. The dissertation covers three major points: 1. The text aims to make the ethnographic user research carried out at UDI as transparent and comprehensible as possible and to show step by step how ethnographic research can look in the private economy. 2. The text can also be read as a how to guide for carrying out ethnographic user research. Practical advices, contextual information, and some document templates will help to simplify the conduction of ethnographic user research. 3. At the methodological level, the text discusses what the use of ethnography in the private economy means for the methodology and what implications this has.
