Abstract: This open access book explores the deep connections between environment, language, and cultural integrity, with a focus on Indigenous peoples from early modern times to the present. This volume fills a unique space by bringing together the issues of environment, language and cultural integrity in Latin American historical and cultural spheres. Abstract: This open access textbook introduces and defines digital humanism from a diverse range of disciplines. Following the 2019 Vienna Manifesto, the book calls for a digital humanism that describes, analyzes, and, most importantly, influences the complex interplay of technology and humankind, for a better society and life, fully respecting universal human rights. The book is organized in three parts: Part I “Background” provides the multidisciplinary background needed to understand digital humanism in its philosophical, cultural, technological, historical, social, and economic dimensions. The goal is to present the necessary knowledge upon which an effective interdisciplinary discourse on digital humanism can be founded. Part II “Digital Humanism – a System’s View” focuses on an in-depth presentation and discussion of the main digital humanism concerns arising in current digital systems. The goal of this part is to make readers aware and sensitive to these issues, including e.g. the control and autonomy of AI systems, privacy and security, and the role of governance. Part III “Critical and Societal Issues of Digital Systems” delves into critical societal issues raised by advances of digital technologies. While the public debate in the past has often focused on them separately, especially when they became visible through sensational events the aim here is to shed light on the entire landscape and show their interconnected relationships. This includes issues such as AI and ethics, fairness and bias, privacy and surveillance, platform power and democracy. This textbook is intended for students, teachers, and policy makers interested in digital humanism. It is designed for stand-alone and for complementary courses in computer science, or curricula in science, engineering, humanities and social sciences. Each chapter includes questions for students and an annotated reading list to dive deeper into the associated chapter material. The book aims to provide readers with as wide an exposure as possible to digital advances and their consequences for humanity. Abstract: Explores cities of exile from different perspectives and presents different methods and sources for exile and urban studies. The essays are written by internationally recognized scholars, and contain a wide range of themes including mapping, oral history, queerness, photography. This book will make a significant contribution to the theory and methodology of research on historical exile, cities and modernities, as well as present multidisciplinary exile research from an urban perspective.With a blend of case studies, and theoretical approaches, it interweaves histories of modernism and exile in different urban environments and focuses on historical dislocations in the first half of the twentieth century, when artistic and urban movements constituted themselves in global exchange. Abstract: Seit dem Mord an George Floyd durch den Polizeieingriff in den Vereinigten Staaten im Mai 2020 und der daraus erwachsenen (Social Media-)Bewegung #blacklivesmatter hat auch die Beschäftigung mit den verschiedenen Formen von Rassismus in Deutschland zugenommen. Konnte der Begriff vor wenigen Jahren in wissenschaftlichen wie öffentlichen Diskursen weitgehend nur schwierig oder selten genutzt werden, hat er sich inzwischen hierzulande auch als Gegenbegriff zur globalen Wirkmächtigkeit rechter Ideologien, die besonders Identitätskategorien zur Legitimation mörderischer Gewalt heranziehen, sowie im Kontext globaler Diversifizierungsmaßnahmen im Diskursmainstream durchgesetzt. Dieser Erfolg des Begriffs lässt auch die filmischen Produktionen zu Themen von Menschenfeindlichkeit, die auf Repräsentationskategorien basieren, in einem neuen Licht erscheinen. Filme zu Themen des Rassismus versuchen, Aufklärungsarbeit im Sinne anti-rassistischer Praxis zu leisten, während beispielsweise propagandistische Videos rechter und dschihadistischer Kreise zur (re-)produktiven Verhandlung von Rassismus beitragen. Andererseits lassen sich Filme, die scheinbar nichts mit Rassismus zu tun haben, bei einem genaueren analytischen Blick sehr wohl als Verstärkungs-, Reproduktions- oder Verschleierungsakteure von Rassismen verstehen. So sind Filme immer schon im Sinne von (Un-)Sichtbarkeitsmaschinen dazu geeignet, soziale Verhältnisse zu veräußerlichen und so ungedachte Zusammenhänge zu denken. In dieser argumentativen Bi-Perspektivität – Sichtbarwerden der Rassismusdiskurse und Filme als Sichtbarkeitsmedien sozialer Verhältnisse – geht der vorliegende Sammelband Diskursformen des Rassismus, seiner Filmkulturen und Möglichkeiten des (anti-rassistischen) Widerstands besonders/aber nicht nur im deutschsprachigen Kontext nach. Daran schließen sich folgende Fragen an: Wie sieht der Zusammenhang von (fiktionalen) Filmen und Formen des Rassismus in Film-kulturen aus? Wie gehen fiktionale Formate mit Antisemitismus, Rechtsradikalismus, antimuslimischem Rassismus, Antiziganismus und whiteness um? Und wie versuchen aktuelle (auch experimentelle) filmische Formate, Rassismus entgegenzutreten? Im Zentrum des Sammelbandes stehen die Filme und ihre Geschichten selbst. Ziel ist es, das Erkenntnispotential von Filmen in der Auseinandersetzung mit Rassismus zu befragen: Was genau am Rassismus machen die Filme sichtbar? Wie lassen sich mögliche historische Entwicklungen narrativer audiovisueller Diskursformen (für den deutschsprachigen Kontext) darstellen? Wie verändern sich in diesen Entwicklungen die Auseinandersetzungen mit jenen rassistischen Formen? Und grundsätzlich: Wie stehen Film und Rassismus zueinander? Abstract: 30 Jahre nach dem ersten Aufkommen des Begriffes Postsozialismus widmet sich dieser Band den vielfältigen (Re)Konfigurationen, die das Konzept seither durchlaufen hat und fragt nach seinem gegenwärtigen analytischen Gehalt. Anhand unterschiedlicher Kontexte untersuchen die Autor*innen die multiplen Verwendungen von und Perspektiven auf das Konzept. Sie wenden sich verschiedenen Formen von (materiellem) Erbe, künstlerisch-aktivistischen Projekten des Erinnerns oder Ost/West-Machtdynamiken zu und diskutieren das spannungsvolle Verhältnis zu post- und dekolonialen Theorien. Den Rahmen bildet dabei ein Fokus auf Praktiken des Erinnerns, der Vergegenwärtigung von Vergangenem und seinem Wirken in die Zukunft.

Abstract: Thirty years after the emergence of the term postsocialism, this volume is dedicated to the multiple (re)configurations the concept has undergone since then and inquires its current analytical value. Looking at different contexts, the authors examine the multiple uses of and perspectives on the concept. They turn to various forms of (material) heritage, artistic-activist projects of remembering, or East-West power dynamics and discuss the ambivalent relationship to post- and decolonial theories. The articles are framed by a focus on practices of remembering, the presencing of the past and its impact on the future.

Soziologie, Geschichtswissenschaften und Kunstgeschichte ist diese Tatsache nicht neu: Diese Disziplinen verfügen über ein passendes, tradiertes theoretisches Fundament. Dagegen spielen Netzwerke und Netzwerkforschung in den Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften kaum eine systematische Rolle. Der vorliegende Band liefert einen Beitrag dazu, diese Lücke zu schließen. Netzwerke und Werknetze (Bruno Latour) verorten sich jenseits eines auch in postkolonialen Perspektiven noch sehr lebendigen ,starken' Subjekts, das sich durch seine individuelle Bildungs- und Emanzipationsgeschichte auszeichnet. Auch lassen sie mit ihren dispersen "affinités déspatialisées" (Boltanski/Chiapello) den spatial turn und seinen vielfach theoretisierten Raumbegriff hinter sich.

Abstract: Dieser Band liefert eine Einführung in die Netzwerkforschung aus romanistischer Perspektive. Er bietet eine ganze Reihe von internationalen Positionen zu künstlerisch-sozialen Netzwerken in den Amerikas, der Karibik und Europa. Mit seinem historischen Zuschnitt zwischen Mexikanischer Revolution und Berliner Mauerfall beleuchten wir eine Epoche, die uns heute - in Form einer digital vernetzten Öffentlichkeit - wieder einzuholen scheint. Today, literally any political, economic or aesthetic phenomenon will seem incomprehensible if not viewed through the lens of 'social networks'. Sociology, historiography and art history are well equipped for this conundrum: These disciplines can rely on an adequate and long-standing foundation of network theory. This, however, is not the case for literary and cultural studies. Here, networks and network research are still rare and under-theorized. The present volume aims to help close this gap.

Abstract: Networks and worknets (Bruno Latour) take us beyond the traditional, 'strong' concepts of subjectivity that prevail even in postcolonial studies: i.e. beyond an emphasis on individual experience, struggle and emancipation. Consisting of multiple and disperse "affinités déspatialisées" (Boltanski/Chiapello), networks also leave the 'spatial turn' and its massive reliance on physical extension behind. This volume offers an introduction to network research from a Romance Studies perspective. It features a series of international contributions on artistic and social networks in the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe. By focusing on the historical period between the Mexican Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall, this volume highlights an epoch that - through a digitally networked public sphere - is regaining its relevance today

Abstract: Thirty years after the collapse of Communism, and at a time of increasing anti-migrant and anti-Roma sentiment, this book analyses how Roma identity is expressed in contemporary Europe. Abstract: This volume adds to the plurality of global histories by locating the global through its articulation and manifestation within particular localities. It accomplishes this by bringing together interlinked case-studies that analyse various temporal and spatial dimensions of the global in the local and the interactions between the local and the global. Abstract: Esta es la primera obra resultante de la reflexión colectiva del Grupo de Trabajo Indígenas y espacio urbano de CLACO que reúne a investigadoras e investigadores de distintos países de las Américas. Cada uno de sus capítulos se basan en investigaciones realizadas en los últimos años sobre las problemáticas de la población indígena cuando reside o migra a las ciudades; en ellos se analizan las condiciones socioeconómicas de indígenas que viven en estos espacios urbanos y las distintas formas de ocupación, así como los avances y retrocesos en materia de políticas públicas con perspectiva intercultural, principalmente, enfocándose en la política social y en el cumplimiento de los derechos sociales en torno a la salud, educación, vivienda, trabajo digno, ocupación de la ciudad y cultura. Los trabajos también muestran las visiones de la población indígena, su relación con las instituciones públicas y con grupos y sectores de población no indígena en diferentes ámbitos sociales y espaciales de las ciudades. Destacan los distintos procesos de discriminación, especialmente la invisibilización de la población indígena que reside en las ciudades, invisibilización que se da tanto en las estadísticas oficiales, como en las políticas públicas y los imaginarios sociales urbanos. Para reflexionar sobre estos procesos, políticas e identidades realzamos su complejidad, asumiendo lo indígena como una cuestión que tiene un carácter conflictivo y problemático; ello supone privilegiar la tensión entre la tendencia a asimilar a las y los indígenas a la cultura occidental y una mirada culturalista que, al acentuar el respeto por las diferencias, aísla y despolitiza el asunto y corre el riesgo de atraparlo en lo local, restándole su capacidad de politizar la discusión en colectivos sociales más amplios.

Abstract: Nieuw in Nederland: Feesten en rituelen in verandering levert een bijdrage aan het publieke debat over immigranten, cultuur en nationalisme. Het boek stelt het idee ter discussie dat in Nederland migrantenculturen bestaan met elk hun eigen traditionele feesten en rituelen. De onderliggende aanname dat migranten vastomlijnde gemeenschappen met eigen culturen vormen, wordt aan de hand van etnografisch onderzoek weerlegd. In het boek staan feesten en rituelen centraal die in Nederland zijn ontstaan als gevolg van de komst van nieuwe Nederlanders: van een doop in een Ghanese pinksterkerk tot het multiculturele evenement Kwakoe. Anders dan vanuit een conventioneel perspectief, waarin deze vieringen als onderdeel van en behorende tot culturen van migranten worden gezien, laten de bijdragen zien dat deze vieringen voortkomen uit onze Nederlandse samenleving als geheel. Vieringen van nieuwe Nederlanders blijken een hybride waarin de Nederlandse geschiedenis even bepalend is als de tradities in het land van oorsprong. Feesten en rituelen lijken weliswaar stabiel, maar zijn voortdurend in verandering. Onder de noemer 'nieuwe Nederlandsheid' schetst Nieuw in Nederland niet zozeer een portret van immigrantenculturen, maar van cultuur in Nederland.

Abstract: This remarkable work is an academic and personal journey into Albania’s post-communist society, examining the links between internal and international migration in one of Europe’s poorest countries. Starting from a cluster of villages in south-east Albania, the author follows rural migrants to their native urban destinations within the country, such as Korçë and Tirana, as well as abroad to Thessaloniki, Greece. Migrants’ lives, experiences and feelings are captured through 150 in-depth interviews, a number of group discussions and ethnographic observations. This rich empirical material is analysed with reference to an extensive body of literature in Albania and worldwide. The author’s own experience as a migrant and reflections as a researcher studying her own origin communities add valuable insights. The theoretical notion of intra- and transnational social fields demonstrates how complex the links between internal and international migration are, especially from a development perspective, highlighting their effect on the lives of migrants, their families, communities of origin and country.

Abstract: Dit boek is een academische en persoonlijke reis naar het postcommunistisch Albanië om inzicht te krijgen in de relatie tussen de interne en internationale migratie en hun invloed op de maatschappelijke ontwikkeling. De auteur volgt de trek van dorpelingen naar steden in het binnenland en buitenland. Door middel van aanzienlijke diepte-interviews, reeks groepsgesprekken en etnografische opmerkingen wordt hun leefomgeving in kaart gebracht. Deze multi-sited, multidisciplinaire en multiniveau benadering maakt onderzoek naar beide migratiesoorten, als onderling verbonden en sociaal ingebedde processen, mogelijk. Zij laat zien hoe deze verwevenheid aanzienlijk invloed uitoefent op de levens van migranten, hun families, hun gemeenschap van herkomst en het land.

Abstract: Controversies and problems with regard to language policy and language education still exist in Malaysia. Despite the attempts of language policy makers to promote multilingualism, the implementation has been marred by political and religious affiliations. Malaysia is a melting pot of many different cultures and ethnicities, the three largest being Malay, Chinese and Indian. Therefore, an analysis of the language variation in this polyglot nation will help in understanding the variety of languages and those who speak them. This book gathers the work of researchers working in the field of language change in Malaysia for over two decades. As there is no book published internationally on the language policy in Malaysia and the effects on the language change in urban migrant populations, this book is a timely contribution not only to an understanding of Malaysian linguistic pluralism and its undercurrents, but also to an understanding of the Indian Diaspora.

Abstract: Maleisië is een smeltkroes van veel verschillende culturen en bevolkingsgroepen, waarvan Maleisiërs, Chinezen en Indiase immigranten de drie belangrijkste groepen vormen. Ondanks diverse pogingen van de overheid om meertaligheid te bevorderen, bestaan in Maleisië nog steeds controverses als het gaat om taal- en educatiebeleid. Bovendien beïnvloedt de politieke en religieuze samenstelling de uitvoering. Abstract: The nine essays of this volume, spanning from the eighteenth to mid-twentieth century, highlight the workings of, and reactions to, colonial domination in Asian contexts. The scholars, which include Victoria Haskins of the University of Newscastle, use a range of social science history methods to explore new paths to colonial history. How were individuals, groups, and social categories able to order their lives in the face of the implementation of external dominance? In other words, what was the agency enabling them to interact with, adapt to, use, counteract and in the end defeat colonialism? The essays emphasize colonialism as a multifaceted historical phenomenon which has taken a number of mutually incompatible forms. The various texts thus reflect on both the "early" colonialism build on indirect and informal practices, and the later forms marked by a high degree of authoritarian control.

Abstract: In Responding to the West geven geschiedkundigen en sociologen hun visie op de methodologie en studie van het kolonialisme in Azië als historisch fenomeen. De negen essays geven hiervan een veelzijdig beeld. Ondanks de structurele onderdrukking was kolonialisme geen kwestie van eenrichtingsverkeer. De studie ervan vereist dan ook een grondige analyse van de continu veranderende verhoudingen tussen kolonisten en gekoloniseerden. Met Responding to the West wordt alvast een voorzet gegeven.

Abstract: Most literature on the economic crisis in indonesia has focused on the negative macro-economic impacts during the "crisis- years" of 1997-99. De case-studies in dit boek beslaan niet alleen een langere periode, er worden ook diepteanalyses gemaakt van een verscheidenheid aan reponse- en bestaansstrategieën van huishoudens en rurale gemeenschappen tijdens en na de crisis. Pessimistische aannames ten aanzien van de weinig effectieve vooronderstellingen worden in dit boek tegengesproken. Het boek levert daardoor een bijdrage aan een effectiever beleid om gemeenschappen in crisissituaties weerbaarder te maken.

Abstract: Breakdance, DJ-ing, Rap, Graffiti: Die »vier Elemente« der HipHop-Kultur haben sich in den letzten 20 Jahren vom afroamerikanischen Kontext aus weltweit verbreitet. Heute stellt HipHop eine vielseitige Arena der Popkultur dar - ein Medium kultureller Artikulation im jugendlichen Alltag, aber auch ein Produkt der Kulturindustrie und ein »Diskursuniversum« mit typischen Ausdrucksformen in Sprache, Bild und Bewegung. Mit diesem Band liegt die erste umfangreiche Textsammlung über HipHop im deutschsprachigen Raum vor. Beiträge aus Cultural Studies, Ethnologie, Soziolinguistik, Pädagogik und anderen Disziplinen werden mit Essays von Szene-Autoren zusammengeführt. Allen gemeinsam ist das Verständnis von HipHop als Raum kultureller Praxis mit »globalen« Konturen und »lokalen« Aneignungsformen. Das Rahmenthema wird ausdifferenziert in ein Mosaik aus Themen und Theorieperspektiven, u.a. Breakdance und Sozialisation von Migrantenjugendlichen, Sampling und kulturelles Gedächtnis, französischer Rap und politischer Diskurs.
