    Abstract: Die sogenannte Korean Wave und ihr eigenwilliger Charme haben in den letzten Jahren vor allem in Europa stark an Popularität gewonnen und stellen mit K-Pop, Animationsfilmen und sogenannten K-Dramas eines der wichtigsten Exportgüter Südkoreas dar. Dank des Internets und anderer Massenmedien werden zunehmend ein gemeinsames Bewusstsein und eine länderübergreifende Populärkultur geschaffen, die ein wichtiges Soft-Power-Instrument für Südkorea darstellen. Kim befasst sich in ihrer Arbeit eingehend mit der Bedeutung der Korean Wave für das kommunistisch geprägte Nordkorea, wo Inhalte aus dem Nachbarland meist im Verborgenen konsumiert werden müssen. Das dort vorherrschende hohe Maß an Verzicht und Disziplin stellt einen starken Kontrast zu den bunten und lebhaften Inhalten des Populärkulturphänomens dar, der das Verhältnis der nordkoreanischen Bevölkerung zum Nachbarland in Bezug auf soziale, kulturelle und politische Faktoren beeinflusst. Die vorherrschende Beliebtheit der Korean Wave und der daraus entstehenden Fankultur in Nordkorea ist damit ein bisher einzigartiges Beispiel dafür, wie eine gemeinsame Populärkultur als Soft-Power-Instrument in der Lage ist, bestehende Kultur- und Ländergrenzen zu erodieren, potenziell aufzubrechen und sogar Migrationswellen auszulösen.     Abstract: Spätestens in den 1980er-Jahren führte die Globalisierung der Märkte zu ökonomischen Interdependenzen und einer verstärkt transnationalen Ausrichtung der Handelspolitik weltweit. Seither befinden sich Nationalstaaten im Spannungsfeld zwischen der Integration in eine globalisierte Welt und dem Erhalt einer nationalen Kultur sowie kulturellen Identität. Welchen Einfluss hat ein stark marktorientierter globaler Austausch an Produkten, Menschen und Gütern auf die nationale Kulturpolitik und kulturelle Produktion eines Landes? Es geht hier um die Transformation der australischen Kulturlandschaft der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte von 1994 bis heute. Bei der 1994 entwickelten nationalen kulturpolitischen Strategie "Creative Nation" stand das Ziel der Schaffung einer nationalen Kultur im Vordergrund. Diesem lag die Auffassung zugrunde, Kultur schaffe Wohlstand und solle die nationale Wirtschaftsleistung steigern und schützen. Somit kann die Kulturpolitik Australiens nur im Kontext der Wirtschafts- und Entwicklungspolitik verstanden werden. Anhand von Fallbeispielen in ausgewählten Bereichen wird besonders im vergangenen Jahrzehnt eine verstärkte Kommerzialisierung des Kultursektors festgestellt. Das ursprünglich formulierte kulturpolitische Ziel des "Nationing" sei in den Hintergrund geraten. Ein besonderes Augenmerk im Buch wird außerdem auf den Einfluss der Digitalisierung auf Transformationsprozesse im Kulturbereich gelegt. (ifa)

    Note: Japan is heterogeneous and culturally diverse, both historically through ancient waves of immigration and in recent years due its foreign relations and internationalization. However, Japan has socially, culturally, politically and intellectually constructed a distinct and homogeneous identity. More recently, such an identity construction has been rightfully questioned and challenged by Japan's culturally diverse groups. This book explores the discursive systems of cultural identities that regenerate the illusion of Japan as a homogeneous nation. Contributors from a variety of disciplines and methodological approaches investigate the ways in which Japan's homogenizing discourses are challenged and modified by counter-homogeneous message systems. They examine the discursive push-and-pull between the homogenizing and heterogenizing vectors, found in domestic and transnational contexts and mobilized by various identity politics, such as gender, sexuality, ethnicity, foreign status, nationality, multiculturalism and internationalization. After offering a careful and critical analysis, the book calls for complicating Japan's homogenizing discourses in nuanced and contextual ways with an explicit goal of working towards a culturally diverse Japan.
