    Abstract: "The media ecology within which conventional mainstream journalism currently operates has undergone major transformations since the advent of social media. These transformations arise from the disruption brought upon by the emergence of networked, interactive platforms and user-driven online applications including social media, blogs and alternative citizen news sites. This book analyses networked forms of journalistic production at traditional news organizations and their conventional news channels. Focusing on case studies from Malaysia, it examines current transformations to the norms, practices and values of conventional news production.     Abstract: Spätestens in den 1980er-Jahren führte die Globalisierung der Märkte zu ökonomischen Interdependenzen und einer verstärkt transnationalen Ausrichtung der Handelspolitik weltweit. Seither befinden sich Nationalstaaten im Spannungsfeld zwischen der Integration in eine globalisierte Welt und dem Erhalt einer nationalen Kultur sowie kulturellen Identität. Welchen Einfluss hat ein stark marktorientierter globaler Austausch an Produkten, Menschen und Gütern auf die nationale Kulturpolitik und kulturelle Produktion eines Landes? Es geht hier um die Transformation der australischen Kulturlandschaft der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte von 1994 bis heute. Bei der 1994 entwickelten nationalen kulturpolitischen Strategie "Creative Nation" stand das Ziel der Schaffung einer nationalen Kultur im Vordergrund. Diesem lag die Auffassung zugrunde, Kultur schaffe Wohlstand und solle die nationale Wirtschaftsleistung steigern und schützen. Somit kann die Kulturpolitik Australiens nur im Kontext der Wirtschafts- und Entwicklungspolitik verstanden werden. Anhand von Fallbeispielen in ausgewählten Bereichen wird besonders im vergangenen Jahrzehnt eine verstärkte Kommerzialisierung des Kultursektors festgestellt. Das ursprünglich formulierte kulturpolitische Ziel des "Nationing" sei in den Hintergrund geraten. Ein besonderes Augenmerk im Buch wird außerdem auf den Einfluss der Digitalisierung auf Transformationsprozesse im Kulturbereich gelegt. (ifa)

    Abstract: "The period spanning the 1880s to 1945 was a crucially important formative time for Korea, during which understandings of modernity were largely shaped by the images of Korea's neighbours to the east, west and north. China, Japan and Russia represented at some moments modern threats, but also denoted a range of alternative modernity possibilities, and ultimately provided a model for Korea's pre-colonial and colonial modernity. This book explores the way in which modern Korea perceived its geographic neighbours from the 1890s until 1945. It shows that Korea's modern nationalism was at the same time internationalist in its orientation, as the vision of Korea's ideal place in the world and brighter national future was often linked to the examples (positive and negative), threats (perceived and real) and allies abroad. Exploring the importance of the international knowledge and experience for the formation of the Korean nationalist paradigms, it offers nuance to the existing picture of the international connections and environment of the Korean national movements. It shows that the picture of Japan inside the anti-Japanese independence movement of the colonial period was more complicated than simple hatred of the invaders: modern achievements of Japan were admired even by anti-colonial nationalists as a possible model for Korea. The book also demonstrates the extent to which Chinese and Soviet revolutions influenced the thinking of modern Korean intellectuals across the whole ideological spectrum.     Abstract: "The early Soviet Union's 'nationalities policy' involved the formation of many national republics, within which 'nation building' and 'modernization' were undertaken for the benefit of 'backward' peoples. This book, in considering how such policies were implemented in Azerbaijan, argues that the Soviet policies were in fact a form of imperialism, with 'nation building' and 'modernization' imposed firmly along Soviet lines. The book demonstrates that in Azerbaijan, and more widely among western Turkic peoples, the Volga and Crimean Tatars, there were before the onset of Soviet rule long standing, well developed, forward looking, secular, national movements, which were not at all 'backward' and which had different visions to the Soviets. The book shows how in the period 1920 to 1940 the two different visions competed with each other, with eventually the pre-Soviet vision of Azerbaijani culture losing out, and the Soviet version prevailing. The book examines the details of this Sovietization of culture: in language policy and the change of the alphabet, in education, higher education and in literature. The book concludes by exploring how pre-Soviet Azerbaijani culture survived to a degree underground, and how it was partially rehabilitated after the death of Stalin and more fully in the late Soviet period"--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: "The History of Migration in Europe belies several myths by arguing, for example, that immobility has not been the "normal" condition of people before the modern era. Migration (far from being an income-maximizing choice taken by lone individuals) is often a household strategy, and local wages benefit from migration. This book shows how ssuccesses arise when governments liberalize and accompany the international movements of people with appropriate legislation, while failures take place when the legislation enacted is insufficient, belated or ill shaped. The first part of this book addresses mainly methodological issues. Past and present migration is basically defined as a cross-cultural movement; cultural boundaries need prolonged residence and active integrationist policies to allow cross-fertilization of cultures among migrants and non-migrants. The second section collects chapters that examine the role of public bodies with reference to migratory movements, depicting a series of successes and failures in the migration policies through examples drawn from the European Union or single countries. The third section deals with challenges immigrants face once they have settled in their new countries: Do immigrants seek "integration" in their host culture? Through which channels is such integration achieved, and what roles are played by citizenship and political participation? What is the "identity" of migrants and their children born in the host countries? This text's originality stems from the fact that it explains the complex nature of migratory movements by incorporating a variety of perspectives and using a multi-disciplinary approach, including economic, political and sociological contributions"--

The most obvious of these consequences was to impress upon a small child's body and mind that girls differed from boys, thus reproducing gender hierarchy. What is not obvious is why Chinese society should have evolved such a radical method of gender-marking. Gendering is not simply preparation for reproduction, rather its primary significance lies in preparing children for their places in the division of labor of a particular political economy. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and interviews with almost 5,000 women, this book examines footbinding as Sichuan women remember it from the final years of the empire and the troubled times before the 1949 revolution. It focuses on two key questions: what motivated parents to maintain this custom, and how significant was girls' work in China's final pre-industrial century? In answering these questions, Hill Gates shows how footbinding was a form of labor discipline in the first half of the twentieth century in China, when it was a key institution in a now much-altered political economy. Countering the widely held views surrounding the sexual attractiveness of bound feet to Chinese men, footbinding as an ethnic boundary marker, its role in female hypergamy, and its connection to state imperatives, this book instead presents a compelling argument that footbinding was in fact a crucial means of disciplining of little girls to lives of early and unremitting labor.
