    Description / Table of Contents: Over the past few years, the cross-disciplinary field of research devoted to family and kinship history in Europe has seen the emergence of an important stream of studies developing wide-ranging comparative perspectives on great spaces and long periods. Their hypotheses and interpretative models differ somewhat with regard of the factors taken into account, and of the underlying logic identified for these processes. The first part of this volume presents a broad discussion of these recent developments. The chapters in the second part have an alpine focus and are dealing more or less directly with the theoretical framework proposed by Dionigi Albera's book, Au fil des generations. The contributions to the third part of the book are further opening up the field. They leave the alpine terrain and are dedicated to some European contexts, with approaches that are generally influenced by the experience of Albera's analysis of Alpine Europe

    Abstract: "This book presents innovative and creative ethnographic perspectives on the intersection between art, anthropology, and contested cultural heritage resulting from ethnographic and artistic research by the TRACES project (an interdisciplinary research project funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme involving a collaboration between institutional partners in 11 European countries). The case studies in this volume critically assess and evaluate how and in which arrangements artistic/aesthetic methods and creative everyday practices contribute to strengthening communities both culturally and economically. They also explore the extent to which these methods emphasize minority voices and ultimately set in motion a process of reflexive Europeanisation from below which unfolds within Europe and beyond its borders. At the heart of these ethnographic case studies is the development of a new way of transmitting contentious cultural heritage, which responds to the present situation in Europe of unstable political conditions and a sense of Europe in crisis. With chapters looking at difficult art exhibitions on colonialism, death masks, Holocaust memorials and skull collections, the contributors articulate a response to the crisis in current economic-political conditions in Europe and advances brand new theoretical groundwork on the configuration of a renewed European identity.     Abstract: In the last fifteen years or so, a wide community of artists working in a variety of western European nations have overturned the dominant traditions of comic book publishing as it has existed since the end of the Second World War. These artists reject both the traditional form and content of comic books (hardcover, full-colour 'albums' of humour or adventure stories, generally geared towards children), seeking instead to instil the medium with experimental and avant-garde tendencies commonly associated with the visual arts. Unpopular Culture addresses the transformation of the status of the comic book in Europe since 1990. Increasingly, comic book artists seek to render a traditionally degraded aspect of popular culture un-popular, transforming it through the adoption of values borrowed from the field of 'high art.' The first English-language book to explore these issues, Unpopular Culture represents a challenge to received histories of art and popular culture that downplay significant historical anomalies in favour of more conventional narratives. In tracing the efforts of a large number of artists to disrupt the hegemony of high culture, Bart Beaty raises important questions about cultural value and its place as an important structuring element in contemporary social processes

    Abstract: Im Zentrum dieses Bandes stehen fachliche Orientierungen und Positionierungen sowie die Reorganisation der volkskundlichen Wissenschaft in einzelnen europäischen Ländern nach Ende des Nationalsozialismus und des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Die AutorInnen analysieren in 25 Beiträgen zur Wissens- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Volkskunde / Kulturwissenschaft / Europäischen Ethnologie nach 1945 Entwicklungen und Kontexte der Disziplin Volkskunde vor dem Hintergrund gesellschaftlicher und politischer Dynamiken und ermöglichen so inter- und transnationale Vergleiche. Anhand neuer Materialien und Fragestellungen widmen sich die Beiträge auch dem Aspekt von empirisch fass- und darstellbaren Kooperationsbeziehungen und reflektieren das Begründen, Aktivieren, Festigen oder auch Verwerfen von Netzwerken als zentral für das Nachkriegshandeln der wissenschaftlichen AkteurInnen.

    Abstract: The victory of Donald Trump in the 2016 election left specialists of American politics perplexed and concerned about the future of US democracy. Because no populist leader had occupied the White House in 150 years, there were many questions about what to expect. Marshaling the long-standing expertise of leading specialists of populism elsewhere in the world, this book provides the first systematic, comparative analysis of the prospects for US democracy under Trump, considering the two regions - Europe and Latin America - that have had the most ample recent experiences with populist chief executives. Chapters analyze the conditions under which populism slides into illiberal or authoritarian rule and in so doing derive well-grounded insights and scenarios for the US case, as well as a more general cross-national framework. The book makes an original argument about the likely resilience of US democracy and its institutions

    Abstract: Innereuropäische Migrant_innen finden gemeinhin wenig Beachtung im öffentlichen Diskurs - gelten sie doch aufgrund ihrer 'privilegierten' Herkunft nicht als die stereotypen 'Anderen'. Martina Nothnagel präsentiert eine alternative Perspektive auf beständig brisante Themen wie Migration, Integration oder Transkulturalität, indem sie Migrationserfahrungen, Praktiken und Alltagswelten von Menschen erkundet, die aus Skandinavien, Deutschland und Spanien nach Wien zugewandert sind. Dabei liegt der Fokus nicht allein auf der Gegenwart: Zentral ist auch die sozialisatorische Frage nach Veränderungen dieser Erfahrungen und Alltagswelten seit den 1960er Jahren, etwa auf die Auswirkungen der zunehmenden Globalisierung.

    Abstract: Gender quotas are a controversial policy measure. However, over the past twenty years they have been widely adopted around the world and especially in Europe. They are now used in politics, corporate boards, state and local public administration and even in civil society organizations. This book explores this unprecedented phenomenon, providing a unique comparative perspective on gender quotas' adoption across thirteen European countries. It also studies resistance to gender quotas by political parties and supreme courts. Providing up-to-date comprehensive data on gender quotas regulations, Transforming Gender Citizenship proposes a typology of countries, from those which have embraced gender quotas as a new way to promote gender equality in all spheres of social life, to those who have consistently refused gender quotas as a tool for gender equality.     Abstract: Die Europa-Idee, die in den Nachkriegsjahren wirksam war, ist heute verdunstet. Diese Idee war stark geprägt vom Christentum, dem der alte Kontinent seine geistige Einheit verdankt. Die Institutionen des Christentums sind dabei konkurrierenden Interessen ihrer Mitglieder ausgesetzt, verlieren deren Zustimmung in unterschiedlicher Weise und haben das konfliktträchtige Potential ihrer konfessionellen Vielfalt noch nicht ganz überwunden. Daneben haben sogenannte fundamentalistische Richtungen innerhalb traditioneller Weltreligionen – in Europa außer dem Christentum auch das Judentum und der Islam – regen Zulauf. Der Band hinterfragt die traditionelle Rolle religiöser Werte für die Union, ihre Transformation in der Geschichte und behandelt ihre Gegenwart und Zukunft.     Abstract: This volume brings together essays from different fields of the humanities and social sciences that offer a fresh look at the complexity of artistic and cultural contacts, transfers, and exchanges between Europe and the Middle East. The studies reach far beyond the geographical regions where Europe and the Middle East have met and interacted throughout their long histories, such as the eastern Mediterranean, the south Caucasus, and the Balkans. Their focus is on the variety of "contact zones" of the two worlds with specific artistic creativity, characterized by dynamic processes of movement and interchange between various cultural entities in the broadest and most complex sense of the word. The studies shed new light on diverse phenomena of the "in-between" or "liminal" spaces in art and culture, with special interest in artists and art works from ancient to modern times, from fine arts and architecture to music and video.

    Abstract: Who votes for radical right parties and why? This book argues that the increasing popularity of the radical right in Europe originates in community bonds: strong ties to one's locality motivate support for the radical right. These parties use nostalgic themes and symbolic politicking to idealize community, defend local autonomy, and ultimately draw local identity into the electoral realm. While other explanations of the radical right's popularity typify supporters as victims of macro-economic shifts and strains, the author's account explores people's day-to-day experiences that link local connections to political decisions. The analysis also raises questions about the political implications of different formal authority structures such as the level and nature of power devolved to local units. The localist model of radical right support illuminates the psychological, social, and institutional conditions and processes that render people's feelings about their cities, towns, and villages relevant for politics

    Abstract: "This innovative edited collection brings together leading scholars from the USA, the UK and mainland Europe to examine how European identity and institutions have been fashioned though interactions with the southern periphery since 1945. It highlights the role played by North African actors in shaping European conceptions of governance, culture and development, considering the construction of Europe as an ideological and politico-economic entity in the process.     Abstract: Migration war immer ein wichtiger Aspekt der Geschichte der europäischen Integration. Die bestehende Literatur hat dieses Thema hauptsächlich von einer nationalen und sozioökonomischen Perspektive betrachtet. Dieses Buch jedoch integriert solche fragmentierten Analysen, betrachtet sie aus einem weiteren Blickwinkel und ordnet sie im breiteren Zusammenhang des sozialen und demografischen Wandels Europas sowie der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Geschichte der europäischen Integration ein.Das Buch untersucht die Auswirkungen der EU-Migrationspolitik auf die politischen und wirtschaftlichen Außenbeziehungen Europas und erkennt die Migration aus osteuropäischen Ländern vor 1989 als Teil der europäischen Integration an.Indem das Buch zeigt, dass die Migrationspolitik und ihr Einfluss auf europäische Gesellschaften nur im Zusammenhang der EU-Rahmenbedingungen vollständig verstanden werden können, trägt es wesentlich zur Migrationsforschung im Allgemeinen bei.Mit Beiträgen von:Giulia Bentivoglio, Marcel Berlinghoff, Cristina Blanco Sío-López, Elena Calandri, Alice Cunha, Yves Denéchère, Pawel Jaworski, Slawomir Lukasiewicz, Willem Maas, Guia Migani, Simone Paoli, Dimitris Parsanoglou, Yvette Santos, Beatrice Scutaru, Jacek Tebinka, Moshik Temkin, Giota Tourgeli und Roberto Ventresca.
    Abstract: Movement of people has been a key feature in the whole history of European integration. While existing literature has mostly adopted national viewpoints and a socioeconomic perspective, this book integrates these existing fragmented analyses, views them from a broader perspective and places them in the wider context of the social and demographic transformation of Europe and the political and economic narrative of continental integration. It highlights the impact made by EC/EU immigration policies on the external political and economic relations of Europe and acknowledges that pre-1989 migration from East European countries is part of European integration. By showing that migration policies and their impact on European national societies and economies cannot be fully understood without taking into account the EC framework, this book, therefore, contributes to migration studies as a whole.

    Abstract: Der Topos »Islam in Europa« ist durch Dichotomisierung gekennzeichnet: Im öffentlichen und wissenschaftlichen Diskurs offenbart sich eine binäre Auseinandersetzung, die entweder muslimische Subjektivierung oder die Institutionalisierung des Islam verhandelt. Dabei werden Europa und der Islam als voneinander getrennte Einheiten konstruiert.Laura Haddads ethnographische Fallstudien zeigen hingegen einen wechselseitigen Aushandlungsprozess von Islam und Europa, der diese Dichotomien in Frage stellt.     Abstract: Minderheiten sind seit dem Beitritt des Deutschen Reiches zum Völkerbund (1926) ein zentraler Bestandteil der deutschen Außenpolitik. Ihnen kommt im Prozess der Europäisierung und der Auflösung nationaler Grenzen eine wichtige Rolle zu. Wie Minderheiten sich in Europa Gehör verschaffen können, ist in hohem Maße durch die Kulturpolitik der Nationalstaaten und der EU bestimmt. Die Autoren und Autorinnen des Bandes richten ihren Blick auf die Anfänge einer modernen Minderheitenpolitik seit der Weimarer Republik, in welcher der Begriff der nationalen Minderheiten zuerst zu einem Gegenstand rechtlicher wie politischer Debatten und zu einer gesellschaftlichen "Kategorie der Moderne" wurde. Die Gründung des Völkerbundes, die Legitimierung des Selbstbestimmungsrechts der Völker und die Etablierung des Minderheitenschutzes auf internationaler Ebene bildeten den Ausgangspunkt für diese Entwicklungen. Zeitgenössische volkskundliche Untersuchungen trugen neben vielen anderen Wissenschaften maßgeblich zur Kodifizierung des Konzeptes Minderheiten sowie zur Fremd- und Selbstethnisierung bei.

    Abstract: The economic rise of Europe over the past millennium represents a major human breakthrough. To explain this phenomenon, this book highlights a counterintuitive yet central feature of Europe's historical landscape: warfare. Historical warfare inflicted numerous costs on rural populations. Security was a traditional function of the city. To mitigate the high costs of conflict in the countryside, rural populations migrated to urban centers. Over time, the city's historical role as a safe harbor translated into local economic development through several channels, including urban political freedoms and human capital accumulation. To make this argument, the book performs a wide-ranging analysis of a novel quantitative database that spans more than one thousand years, from the fall of the Carolingian Empire to today. The book's study of urban Europe's historical path from warfare to wealth provides a new way to think about the process of long-run economic and political development.

    Abstract: Since the days of V. Gordon Childe, the study of the emergence of complex societies has been a central question in anthropological archaeology. However, archaeologists working in the Americanist tradition have drawn most of their models for the emergence of social complexity from research in the Middle East and Latin America. Bernard Wailes was a strong advocate for the importance of later prehistoric and early medieval Europe as an alternative model of sociopolitical evolution and trained generations of American archaeologists now active in European research from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Two centuries of excavation and research in Europe have produced one of the richest bodies of archaeological data anywhere in the world. The abundant data show that technological innovations such as metallurgy appeared very early, but urbanism and state formation are comparatively late developments. Key transformative process such as the spread of agriculture did not happen uniformly but rather at different rates in different regions.The essays in this volume celebrate the legacy of Bernard Wailes by highlighting the contribution of the European archaeological record to our understanding of the emergence of social complexity. They provide case studies in how ancient Europe can inform anthropological archaeology. Not only do they illuminate key research topics, they also invite archaeologists working in other parts of the world to consider comparisons to ancient Europe as they construct models for cultural development for their regions. Although there is a substantial corpus of literature on European prehistoric and medieval archaeology, we do not know of a comparable volume that explicitly focuses on the contribution that the study of ancient Europe can make to anthropological archaeology

    Abstract: Mit der Erschließung der Ozeane und der Entdeckung Amerikas begann die Globalisierung in der Frühen Neuzeit. Georg Jochum stellt dar, wie diese Entgrenzung der Welt, die in der Devise »Plus Ultra« ihren signifikanten Ausdruck fand, zum Basisparadigma der Moderne wurde. Der ambivalente Charakter der okzidentalen Zivilisation zwischen emanzipativer Weltoffenheit und kolonialer Weltbeherrschung hat hier seinen Ursprung. Auch die gegenwärtige ökologische Krise und die zunehmenden Spannungen in der Weltgesellschaft sind ferne Folgen dieser Entgrenzungsdynamik. Auf diese historische und zeitdiagnostische Analyse aufbauend werden Wege der Transformation hin zu einer zur reflexiven Selbstbegrenzung fähigen, nachhaltigeren Gesellschaft skizziert.

    Abstract: For the analysis of contemporary historical pop-cultural phenomena, a surplus of transnational perspectives are often asserted, but rarely backed up empirically. This volume, however, gathers together case studies that without exception analyze multiple countries and are engaged in forceful historical comparisons, as well as histories of transfer and intertwinement. They focus on music and film, television and radio, magazines and comics, youth culture and fashion. The epistemological interest is directed not just at the comparison of the trends of Americanization and Europeanization in the long decade of the '60s, but also at the relevance of transnational popular culture for processes of social and political transformation

    Abstract: How do democracies form and what makes them die? Daniel Ziblatt revisits this timely and classic question in a wide-ranging historical narrative that traces the evolution of modern political democracy in Europe from its modest beginnings in 1830s Britain to Adolf Hitler's 1933 seizure of power in Weimar Germany. Based on rich historical and quantitative evidence, the book offers a major reinterpretation of European history and the question of how stable political democracy is achieved. The barriers to inclusive political rule, Ziblatt finds, were not inevitably overcome by unstoppable tides of socioeconomic change, a simple triumph of a growing middle class, or even by working class collective action. Instead, political democracy's fate surprisingly hinged on how conservative political parties – the historical defenders of power, wealth, and privilege – recast themselves and coped with the rise of their own radical right. With striking modern parallels, the book has vital implications for today's new and old democracies under siege

    Abstract: The regulation of civil society provides the framework under which those organisations can most effectively provide services in education, health, social services, housing, development aid and so on. Civil Society in Europe identifies common principles of civil society law in two ways. First, the approaches of the Council of Europe and the European Union are explored. Next civil society regulation in twelve domestic legal systems are investigated on a broad range of substantive areas of law including internal organisation, registration, external supervision, public benefit organisations and international activities. From these, the authors distill a set of minimum norms and optimal conditions under which civil society can deliver its aims most effectively.
