Derzeit arbeitet sie am Zentrum für Geschlechterstudien/Gender Studies der Universität Paderborn.

    Abstract: Die Versorgung pflegebedürftiger Angehöriger ist eine der wichtigsten Aufgaben unserer Zeit. Unklar ist, ob damit Gesundheitsverschlechterungen für informell Pflegende verbunden sind. Diese Arbeit geht unter Zuhilfenahme europäischer Längsschnittdaten (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe und English Longitudinal Study of Ageing) der Frage nach, ob informelle Pflege mit negativen Gesundheitsfolgen verbunden ist. Dabei wird berücksichtigt, dass mögliche Gesundheitsfolgen in Abhängigkeit des Ortes (innerhalb oder außerhalb des eigenen Haushalts) und Landes der Pflegeübernahme sowie der Herkunft der Pflegenden variieren können. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass Pflegekonstellationen mit einer großen (emotionalen/räumlichen) Nähe zwischen Pflegenden und Gepflegten sowie in Ländern mit geringem formellen Pflegeangebot besonders belastend sind. Keine Unterschiede in den Gesundheitsfolgen von informeller Pflege zeigen sich dagegen in Abhängigkeit des Herkunftskontexts, sprich Migrationshintergrundes. Die Ergebnisse machen sozialpolitischen Handlungsbedarf bei der Unterstützung Pflegender deutlich und zeigen auf, dass Wohlfahrtsstaaten Rahmenbedingungen schaffen sollten, gesundheitsschonende Angehörigenpflege zu ermöglichen. Die Autorin Judith Kaschowitz ist als Post-Doktorandin an der TU Dortmund am Lehrstuhl für Sozialstruktur und Soziologie alternder Gesellschaften tätig. Sie forscht empirisch quantitativ und international vergleichend zu Fragestellungen im Bereich der Alterns- und Gesundheitssoziologie.

    Abstract: Die Evolution von Gesellschaft führt zu unterschiedlichen Differenzierungsformen, die immer auch als Neu-Arrangierung des Verhältnisses gelesen werden kann, welches die Gesellschaft zum Individuum einrichtet. Diese These wird im vorliegenden Buch mittels zweier Studien entlang der Werke von Émile Durkheim und Niklas Luhmann ausführlich ausgearbeitet. Beiden theoretischen Zugängen ist gemein, dass sie die Individualität des «modernen» Individuums nicht als Kompositum der Gesellschaft begreifen, vielmehr hat das Individuum seinen Standort in sich selbst und somit ausserhalb der Gesellschaft. Trotz dieser extrasozietalen Verortung bleibt Individualität gesellschaftlich verursacht, Individuen sind für die Ermöglichung und den Erhalt ihrer Individualität konstitutiv auf soziale Systeme und Inklusion angewiesen. Die Soziale Arbeit findet ihr gesellschaftliches Bezugsproblem in diesem Sachverhalt, indem sie Individualität als Kehrseite partieller Multiinklusion reflektiert und als bearbeitbare Grösse betrachtet. Ihr geht es – zumindest dann, wenn sie mehr will als nur das biologische Überleben der «Überflüssigen» zu verwalten – um das Arrangement der Inklusionen und hier um die Frage, wie Individualität auf eine gerechte Weise ermöglicht, entwickelt und stabilisiert werden kann. Der Autor Dr. Marcel Krebs, Soziologe und Sozialarbeiter HFS, ist Dozent an der Hochschule für Soziale Arbeit der Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz FHNW.

    Abstract: Die Studie zeigt die Vielfältigkeit kinderloser Lebensentwürfe und -verläufe auf. Dabei wird insbesondere das Phänomen erworbene Kinderlosigkeit differenzierter als in vielen bisherigen Untersuchungen beleuchtet. Zudem wird der Prozesscharakter von Kinderlosigkeit deutlich herausgearbeitet und gezeigt, dass mit dem zeitlichen Abstand im Alter die Entstehung der eigenen Kinderlosigkeit zum Teil eine Umdeutung erfährt, um von den kinderlosen Älteren sinnhaft in die Biographie gefügt werden zu können. Die Autorin Katrin Alert ist derzeit Geschäftsführerin des Forschungskollegs Wohlbefinden bis ins hohe Alter (gefördert vom Ministerium für Kultur und Wissenschaft des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen) mit zehn Doktorand*innen an der Universität zu Köln.

Die vorliegende biografische und ethnografische Studie gibt Aufschluss über die Motivlagen für den Einstieg und den komplexen Verlauf der Prostitutionstätigkeit, wobei die Grenzen zwischen Freiwilligkeit und Zwangskontexten fließend sind. Professionelle Beratung in Form von Streetwork und Einzelfallhilfe bieten Perspektiven für einen Ausstieg aus dem Prostitutionsmilieu. Die Autorin Julia Wege ist Leiterin der Beratungsstelle ,,Amalie" für Frauen in der Prostitution sowie Lehrbeauftragte für Methoden der Sozialen Arbeit an der SRH Hochschule Heidelberg. .

Dazu werden verschiedene Prozesse wie die der Politik, Ökonomie, Architektur oder Technik in Bezug auf das Wohnen dargestellt. Zudem werden verschiedene Räume des Wohnens auf unterschiedlichen sozialräumlichen Maßstabsebenen von einzelnen Gebäuden über Nachbarschaften und Städte bis hin zu multilokalen Zusammenhängen beleuchtet. Ebenso wird das Wohnen in institutionellen und gemeinschaftlichen Kontexten thematisiert. Obwohl soziologisch ausgerichtet, wird dieses Handbuch von Autor*innen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen getragen. Die Herausgeber*innen Dr. Frank Eckardt ist Professor für sozialwissenschaftliche Stadtforschung an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Dr. Sabine Meier ist Juniorprofessorin für Räumliche Entwicklung und Inklusion an der Universität Siegen.

    Abstract: Based on a decade of fieldwork in southeastern Ghana and analysis of secondary sources, this book aims to reconstruct the religious history of the Anlo-Ewe peoples from the 1850s. In particular, it focuses on a corpus of rituals collectively known as 'Fofie', which derived their legitimacy from engaging with the memory of the slave-holding past. The Anlo developed a sense of discomfort about their agency in slavery in the early twentieth century which they articulated through practices such as ancestor veneration, spirit possession, and by forging links with descendants of peoples they formerly enslaved. Conversion to Christianity, engagement with 'modernity', trans-Atlantic conversations with diasporan Africans, and citizenship of the postcolonial state coupled with structural changes within the religious system - which resulted in the decline in Fofie's popularity - gradually altered the moral emphases of legacies of slavery in the Anlo historical imagination as the twentieth century progressed

    Abstract: It was common knowledge in early modern England that sexual desire was malleable, and could be increased or decreased by a range of foods - including artichokes, oysters and parsnips. This book argues that these aphrodisiacs were used not simply for sexual pleasure, but, more importantly, to enhance fertility and reproductive success; and that at that time sexual desire and pleasure were felt to be far more intimately connected to conception and fertility than is the case today. It draws on a range of sources to show how, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, aphrodisiacs were recommended for the treatment of infertility, and how men and women utilised them to regulate their fertility. Via themes such as gender, witchcraft and domestic medical practice, it shows that aphrodisiacs were more than just sexual curiosities - they were medicines which operated in a number of different ways unfamiliar now, and their use illuminates popular understandings of sex and reproduction in this period

    Abstract: South Sudan became Africa's newest nation in 2011, following decades of armed conflict. Chiefs - or 'traditional authorities' - became a particular focus of attention during the international relief effort and post-war reconstruction and state-building. But 'traditional' authority in South Sudan has been much misunderstood. Institutions of chiefship were created during the colonial period but originated out of a much longer process of dealing with predatory external forces. This book addresses a significant paradox in African studies more widely: if chiefs were the product of colonial states, why have they survived or revived in recent decades? By examining the long-term history of chiefship in the vicinity of three towns, the book also argues for a new approach to the history of towns in South Sudan. Towns have previously been analysed as the loci of alien state power, yet the book demonstrates that these government centres formed an expanding urban frontier, on which people actively sought knowledge and resources of the state. Chiefs mediated relations on and across this frontier, and in the process chiefship became central to constituting both the state and local communities. Cherry Leonardi is a Lecturer in African History at the University of Durham, a former course director of the Rift Valley Institute's Sudan course, and a member of the council of the British Institute in Eastern Africa.     Abstract: Immigrants from China started settling in Calcutta, the British capital of colonial India, from the late eighteenth century. Initially, the immigrant community comprised of male workers, many of whom sojourned between China and India. Only in the early twentieth century was there a large influx of women and children from China. To address the educational needs of the children - both immigrant and locally-born - several Chinese-medium primary and middle schools were established in Calcutta by the community in the 1920s and 1930s. Using many hitherto unexplored textual sources and interviews in India, China, and Canada, this detailed and unprecedented study examines the history and significance of these Chinese-medium schools. It focuses on the role they played in preserving Chinese cultural identity not only through the use of educational curricula and textbooks imported from China, but also with the emphasis on the need to return to the ancestral homeland for higher education. This study also breaks new ground by examining the impact of political and other factionalism within the community as well as the India-China conflict of 1962 that resulted in the closure of most of the Chinese-medium schools in Calcutta by the 1980s

    Abstract: Tan Ta Sen has modestly suggested that, as a book to illustrate the peaceful impact of culture contact, he is concerned to show how such cultural influences not only led to transmissions, conversions and transferences involving Inner Asian Muslims from China and Yunnan Muslims, Chams, Javanese, Malays, Arabs and Indians, but also enabled many Chinese in the Malay world to retain their non-Muslim cultural traits. In placing Cheng Ho's voyages in this context, the author offers a fresh perspective on a momentous set of events in Chinese maritime history. Professor Wang Gungwu, National University of Singapore. Tan Ta Sen's book on Cheng Ho and Islam in Southeast Asia is not the first one on the subject, but it is the first book that puts Cheng Ho's voyages in the larger context of "culture contact" in China and beyond. He has garnered numerous sources, from published documents to architectural sites and buildings, to support his arguments. He has done much more than previous scholars writing on this subject. - Professor Leo Suryadinata, Chinese Heritage Centre (Singapore).     Abstract: As a region, Southeast Asia has undergone enormous economic and social changes in the last few decades. Women as a collective have seen their lives transformed as a result of rapid development and economic growth. In exploring the progress made by Southeast Asian men and women, this book seeks to answer the following questions: (a) In what areas have women been able to achieve parity with men? (b) In what areas do women encounter specific disadvantages based on their gender as compared with men? and (c) How have women's concerns and problems been addressed by the governments in this region with the aim of encouraging gender equality? As the title of this book suggests, the chapters provide an analysis of the broad trends - including changes and continuities - in the experiences, interests and concerns of Southeast Asian women. The chapters examine the trends related to women in the following arenas: the family, economic participation, politics, health, and religion. In some arenas, the trends reflect the disadvantages women face, which in turn have led to gender gaps; in other areas, women's progress has been found to eclipse that of the men, although this tends to be the exception

    Abstract: Southeast and East Asian countries are undergoing varying stages of population ageing. The social, economic and political implications of population ageing will be enormous, and because of the fast speed of ageing in the region, the countries cannot afford the luxury of time for the gradual evolution of social and structural support systems and networks for the older population. The essays in this volume critically examine national ageing policies and programmes, the sustainability of existing pension systems, housing and living arrangements, inter-generational transfer, and aspects of quality of life of the elderly population. While the findings show that most Southeast Asian countries have started to formulate and implement national ageing policies, they also indicate that the existing policies are by and large inadequate and underdeveloped in serving the needs of the older population and indeed much more must be done to prepare for the future

    Abstract: Language policies in Southeast Asia have been shaped by the process of nation-building on the one hand and by political and economic considerations on the other. The early years of nation-building in Southeast Asia generated intensive language conflicts precisely because state policies privileged the idea of a monolingual nation and thus endeavoured to co-opt or even do away with troublesome ethnic identities. In recent years, language policies are increasingly influenced by pragmatic considerations, especially globalization and the awareness of a linkage between language and economic development, such that Southeast Asian states in varying degrees have become less insistent on promoting monolingual nationalism.This book evaluates the successes and drawbacks of language policies in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar, especially the ways in which these policies have often been resisted or contested.     Abstract: This study examines the Indonesian Muslim intellectuals of the twentieth century and their approaches in dealing with the problems that faced Indonesian Muslims at that time. Like their intellectual ancestors in Islamic history, these recent Indonesian intellectuals carefully examined the society in which they lived. On one level they studied the original and historical teachings of Islam and attempted to fit that message to the Southeast Asian region. On another level they reacted to the great waves of culture that arrived from Europe, North America, and Asia throughout the twentieth century.     Abstract: The Killing Trap, first published in 2005, offers a comparative analysis of the genocides, politicides and ethnic cleansings of the twentieth century, which are estimated to have cost upwards of forty million lives. The book seeks to understand both the occurrence and magnitude of genocide, based on the conviction that such comparative analysis may contribute towards prevention of genocide in the future. Manus Midlarsky compares socio-economic circumstances and international contexts and includes in his analysis the Jews of Europe, Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, Tutsi in Rwanda, black Africans in Darfur, Cambodians, Bosnians, and the victims of conflict in Ireland. The occurrence of genocide is explained by means of a framework that gives equal emphasis to the non-occurrence of genocide, a critical element not found in other comparisons, and victims are given a prominence equal to that of perpetrators in understanding the magnitude of genocide

The Berlin Aging Study is one of the largest interdisciplinary efforts to explore old age and aging. Claudia Strauss and Naomi Quinn propose a new theory of cultural meaning, one that gives priority to the way people's experiences are internalized.     Abstract: Why did 60 million people leave Europe for overseas destinations in the hundred years after the Napoleonic Wars? What were the social and economic causes and effects of this mass migration? Why did some people emigrate and not others, and why did so many emigrants return to Europe? This short comprehensive survey answers these and other questions regarding emigration from different parts of Europe in the years between 1815 and 1930. Written specifically for undergraduate students, it reviews the current literature in several European languages, summarises both economic and demographic theories, and analyses the relation between economic change in Europe and the emigration rate, as well as discussing the economic effects of immigration on the receiving countries and the social experiences or the immigrants

    Abstract: Over the past thirty years family history has been one of the most important and controversial growth areas in the development of social history. In this guide to the burgeoning literature on the Western family Professor Anderson reviews the main findings of historians and considers them in the light of the problems inherent in the interpretation of family history. He focuses particularly on the strengths and limitations of the different approaches that have been adopted, showing that although this variety of method has complicated matters, it has also produced a more rounded understanding of the history of the family.     Abstract: This fascinating study in the sociology of knowledge documents the refutation of scientific foundations for racism in Britain and the United States between the two World Wars, when racial differences were no longer attributed to cultural factors. Professor Barkan considers the social significance of this transformation, particularly its effect on race relations in the modern world. Discussing the work of the leading biologists and anthropologists who wrote between the wars, he argues that the impetus for the shift in ideologies came from the inclusion of outsiders (women, Jews, and leftists) who infused greater egalitarianism into scientific discourse. But even though the emerging view of race was constrained by a scientific language, he shows that modern theorists were as much influenced by social and political events as were their predecessors

    Abstract: British relations with Latin America have declined dramatically. The strength of British influence in Latin America in the nineteenth century could not be sustained as a consequence of the two world wars, the intervening depression and the emergence of the United States of America as the major power in the region. Since 1945, despite opportunities to re-establish its presence, Britain has seen a further decline in its relations with Latin America, and the consequences of neglect were brought home in spectacular fashion by the war between Britain and Argentina in 1982. Britain and Latin America: A Changing Relationship studies the reasons for this decline, examines the sources of friction and explores the prospect of strengthening relations in the 1990s

    Abstract: The family forms of historic Europe have been fascinating in their variety. Their importance for the historical development of our continent would be difficult to exaggerate; for our relationship with the peoples of the other continents of the world as well. This book is an attempt to recover the different familial systems and compare them with one another. The studies range from Russia, Poland, Hungary and Austria to Scandinavia, Flanders and Britain. All the influences which have affected the character and composition of European households are taken into account. The analysis covers their function as productive work groups, in the procreation and bringing up of children, and in the support of the elderly, and their relationship with the wider society and its norms along with its political organization, central and local. Claims that inheritance customs and inheritance practice and the occupation of the household head exerted a powerful influence on the size and composition of households are subjected to rigorous and systematic investigation
