    Abstract: Civilisation is a debated concept and is often associated with the prerogatives of the 'West', colonial histories, and even emerging global politics. In this book, Stephen Feuchtwang and Michael Rowlands use the examples of Africa and China to provide a new conceptualisation that challenges traditional notions of 'civilisation'. They explain how to understand duration and continuity as long-term processes of transformation. Civilisations are best seen as practices of feeding and hospitality, of rituals and manners of living and dying, of entering the portals into the invisible world that surrounds and encompasses us, of healing and the knowledge of the encompassing universe and its powers, including its ghosts and demons. Civilisations furnish the moral ideals for people to live by and aspire to and they are changed more by the actions of disappointed grassroots and their little traditions than by their ruling authorities. Just as they revitalise and change their civilisations, this book revitalises and changes the way to think about civilisations in the humanities, the historical and the social sciences.

    Abstract: This book is about the production and consumption of history, themes that have gained in importance since the discipline's attempts to disavow its own authority with the ascendancy of postmodern and postcolonial perspectives. Several parallel themes crosscut the book's central focus on the discipline of history: its intellectual history, its historiography, and its connection to memory, particularly in relation to the need to establish the collective identity of 'nation', 'community' or state through a memorialisation process that has much to do with history, or at least with claiming a historicity for collective memory. None of this can be undertaken without an understanding of the roles that history-writing and history-reading have been made to perform in public debates, or perhaps more accurately in public disputes. The book addresses a discomfort with postcolonial theories in and as history.     Abstract: Als in den 1960er Jahren die »Hippies« aufkamen, erkannten darin manche eine »neue Jugendbewegung«. Tatsächlich fanden sich im alternativen Milieu der 1970er und 1980er Jahre nicht wenige Praktiken, politische Ideen und habituelle Muster, die an die Lebensreformbewegung der Jahrhundertwende erinnerten: freie Sexualität und Freikörperkultur, Siedlung auf dem Lande, alternative Haartracht und Bekleidung, Kritik der modernen Gesellschaft, Streben nach Gemeinschaft, politischer Radikalismus. Zugleich unterschieden sich die Kontexte dieser Kritik: Urbanisierung und industrielle Moderne auf der einen, postindustrieller und, auf der kulturellen Ebene, postmoderner »Strukturbruch« auf der anderen Seite. Die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger untersuchen zum einen, inwieweit sich diese Phänomene ähneln oder unterscheiden, und zum anderen fragen sie nach den Verbindungslinien personeller oder institutioneller Art sowie den Rezeptionsmustern der Lebensreform im Alternativmilieu. When the “hippies” emerged in the 1960s, contemporary observers spoke of a “new youth movement”, relating them to the Jugendbewegung of the early 20th century. In fact, there were quite a few practices, political ideas, and habitual patterns in the alternative milieu of the 1970s and 1980s, which seemed to be familiar from the Lebensreform (life reform) movement of the turn of the century: free sexuality and nudism, settlement in the countryside, alternative hairstyles and clothing, criticism of modern society, striving for community, and political radicalism. At the same time, the contexts of this critique differed: urbanization and industrial modernity on the one hand, postindustrial and, on the cultural level, postmodern “structural break” on the other. The volume examines the extent to which the two phenomena were similar, but also looks at differences, personal or institutional links and patterns of reception.

    Abstract: "War-torn deserts, jihadist killings, trucks weighted down with contraband and migrants--from the Afghan-Pakistan borderlands to the Sahara desert, images of danger depict a new world disorder on the global margins. With vivid detail, Ruben Andersson traverses this terrain to provide a startling new understanding of what is happening in remote "danger zones." Instead of buying into apocalyptic visions, Andersson takes aim at how Western states and international organizations conduct military, aid, and border interventions in a dangerously myopic fashion, further disconnecting the world's rich and poor.     Abstract: Die Schattenökonomie in Berliner Privathaushalten ist ein gutes Beispiel für die internationale Arbeitsteilung, wie sie sich mit der Globalisierung herausgebildet hat. An den alltäglichen Begegnungen polnischer Putzfrauen und ihren deutschen Arbeitgeberinnen ist abzulesen, wie sich das polnisch-deutsche Verhältnis im persönlichen Umgang neu konstituiert. Die ethnografische Studie von Ute Frings-Merck lässt die Akteurinnen zu Wort kommen, beschreibt ihr Changieren zwischen Nähe und Distanz, zeigt ihre widerstreitenden Ambitionen auf und entdeckt dabei kulturelle Imaginationen und Zuschreibungen, die den alltäglichen Praktiken zu Grunde liegen: Die Vergangenheit, die beide Nachbarländer verbindet, ist unausweichlich.

    Abstract: Queen Victoria is often cast as a foe of the women's movement - the sovereign who famously declared women's rights to be a 'mad, wicked folly'. Yet these words weren't circulated publicly until after the Queen's death in 1901. Beginning with this insight, this book reveals Victoria as a ruler who captured the imaginations of nineteenth-century feminists. Women's rights activists routinely used Victoria to assert their own claims to citizenship. So popular was their strategy that it even motivated anti-suffragists to launch their own campaign to distance Queen Victoria from feminist initiatives. In highlighting these exchanges, this book draws attention to the intricate and often overlooked connections between the histories of women, the monarchy, and the state. In the process, it sheds light on the development of constitutional monarchy, concepts of female leadership, and the powerful role that the Crown - and queens specifically - have played in modern British culture and politics

    Abstract: Why was religion so important for rulers in the pre-modern world? And how did the world come to be dominated by just a handful of religious traditions, especially Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism? Drawing on sociology and anthropology, as well as a huge range of historical literature from all regions and periods of world history, Alan Strathern sets out a new way of thinking about transformations in the fundamental nature of religion and its interaction with political authority. His analysis distinguishes between two quite different forms of religiosity - immanentism, which focused on worldly assistance, and transcendentalism, which centred on salvation from the human condition - and shows how their interaction shaped the course of history. Taking examples drawn from Ancient Rome to the Incas or nineteenth-century Tahiti, a host of phenomena, including sacred kingship, millenarianism, state-church struggles, reformations, iconoclasm, and, above all, conversion are revealed in a new light.

    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries.

    Abstract: Das Lesbische Aktionszentrum Westberlin trug maßgeblich zur bundesdeutschen Emanzipationsbewegung von Lesben und Frauen bei. Anhand des Archivmaterials macht Lara Ledwa historisches Wissen über marginalisierte, politische und soziale Kämpfe zugänglich und verknüpft es mit aktuellen theoretischen Ansätzen, die für die lesbisch_queeren Bewegungen wichtig sind. Sie würdigt den feministischen, lesbischen und antikapitalistischen Widerstand der Aktivistinnen, untersucht aber auch kritisch die teilweise ausschließenden lesbisch-feministischen Positionen. Dadurch eröffnet Ledwa einen solidarischen Dialog zwischen verschiedenen aktivistischen Lagern und Generationen.

The same agitation that allowed blacks to vote also made it possible for increasing numbers of non-European immigrants to enter America for the first time. What has an expanded immigration regime meant for how blacks express national attachment?     Abstract: The Mediterranean Sea is now the deadliest region in the world for migrants. Although the death toll has been rising for many years, the EU response remains fragmented and short sighted. Politicians frame these migration flows as an unprecedented crisis and emphasize migration control at the EU's external boundaries. In this context, 'At Europe's Edge' investigates why the EU prioritizes the fortification of its external borders; why migrants nevertheless continue to cross the Mediterranean and to die at sea; and how EU member states on the southern periphery respond to their new role as migration gatekeepers. This work addresses these questions by examining the relationship between the EU and Malta, a small state with an outsized role in migration politics as EU policies place it at the crosshairs of migration flows and controls.

    Abstract: In this work, Paul Apostolidis asks what we can learn about social and economic precarity by considering the situation of Latin American migrant day laborers in the United States today. To do so, the author places Latino day laborers' commentaries in dialogue with critical social theory. Apostolidis sees these day laborers' circumstances both as exceptional and as synecdoches for precarious conditions that affect multitudes of workers. Through its combined approach to critical theory and field research with migrant workers, this text makes a case for a politics that is attuned to questions of time and advanced by precarious workers throughout society.

    Abstract: The story of the pervasive and resilient Russian bathhouse (banya) offers new perspectives on the evolution of Russian identity, conceptions of health and hygiene, and forms of community, sexuality, and sociability. The meanings that have formed around the banya over its thousand-year history make it a unique prism through which to understand the effects of broad social, economic, and political changes on the everyday lives of Russians and to understand how Russians have seemed at times barbaric and at times enlightened to outsiders. Sources ranging from the earliest recorded Russian chronicles to recent feature films, from municipal codes to highbrow Russian literature, illustrate the ways in which the banya, whether in Russia, in the Russian diaspora, or in the imagination of outsiders, has been a place to get clean and a space for intrigue, intimacy, violence, and sex.

    Abstract: Civilisation is a debated concept and is often associated with the prerogatives of the 'West', colonial histories, and even emerging global politics. In this book, Stephen Feuchtwang and Michael Rowlands use the examples of Africa and China to provide a new conceptualisation that challenges traditional notions of 'civilisation'. They explain how to understand duration and continuity as long-term processes of transformation. Civilisations are best seen as practices of feeding and hospitality, of rituals and manners of living and dying, of entering the portals into the invisible world that surrounds and encompasses us, of healing and the knowledge of the encompassing universe and its powers, including its ghosts and demons. Civilisations furnish the moral ideals for people to live by and aspire to and they are changed more by the actions of disappointed grassroots and their little traditions than by their ruling authorities. Just as they revitalise and change their civilisations, this book revitalises and changes the way to think about civilisations in the humanities, the historical and the social sciences

Er versammelt mehr als zwei Dutzend Geschichten und Grafiken, die eingebettet sind in Forschungsbeiträge, die das komplexe Gelände der Datengesellschaft, der Zivilstatistik, der kulturellen Vermessung der Welt, des aufklärerisch angelegten und ethisch verankerten Kommunikationsdesigns wie auch der Chancen und Herausforderungen der digitalen Informationsgestaltung kritisch beleuchten.
    Abstract: Durch die fortschreitende Digitalisierung, die Medien ortsübergreifend und zeitunabhängig zugänglich macht, wird es für Institutionen immer wichtiger, sich über die ansprechende und verständliche Gestaltung der eigenen Inhalte auszutauschen. Überraschenderweise zeigt sich besonders der Kulturbetrieb, der auf öffentliches Interesse angewiesen ist, in dieser Hinsicht weitgehend inaktiv. Rein textbasierte Informationen überwiegen weiterhin in den meisten Onlinepräsenzen und -veröffentlichungen. Zudem existieren zu vielen Vorgängen im Kulturbetrieb nur ungenaue oder unzureichende Kennzahlen, was eine gezielte und vergleichbare Analyse der durchgeführten Projekte unmöglich macht. Im vorliegenden Kulturatlas wird in Form von 24 Forschungsbeiträgen aus verschiedenen Gebieten versucht, eine quantitative Erfassung verschiedener aktueller kultureller Aktivitäten und Phänomene sowie deren Erscheinungsformen und strukturellen Gegebenheiten vorzunehmen und die Ergebnisse grafisch so aufzubereiten, dass die dahinterstehenden komplexen Zusammenhänge möglichst einfach verständlich dargestellt und vermittelt werden können. Der Kulturatlas soll dazu dienen, Kultureinrichtungen zu motivieren, sich intensiver mit ihren Methoden der Informationsvermittlung auseinanderzusetzen und will einen Impuls für ein flächendeckendes Umdenken im Kulturbetrieb geben.     Abstract: "Citizenship in Africa provides a comprehensive exploration of nationality laws in Africa, placing them in their theoretical and historical context.     Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Eigentlich hatte Michael Kerstgens kein grosses fotografisches Interesse am Fall der Mauer und an den Wirren der Wiedervereinigung. Zuviel Schwarz-Rot Gold und Deutschtümelei - für seinen Geschmack. Durch Zufall kam er im März 1990 nach Mühlhausen in Thüringen. Im Auftrag einer westdeutschen Zeitschrift sollte er die "vergessene Stadt" fotografieren. Während der Arbeit änderte sich seine Haltung. Was ihn immer mehr interessierte, war das Leben in der sich selbst überlassenen, mittelalterlichen Stadt, weit entfernt von den im Fokus der Medien stehenden "Wende" Zentren Berlin, Leipzig oder Dresden - einer historischen Stadt, die durch ihre Bürger notdürftig zusammengeflickt und am Leben gehalten worden war und die nun plötzlich in das Zentrum von Deutschland rückte. Noch hiess der Staat DDR, doch wenige Tage vor den Volkskammerwahlen vom 18. März war sein Ende bereits absehbar. In dieser Zeit zwischen den Zeiten beobachtete Kerstgens die Stadt und ihre Bewohner aufmerksam und voller Anteilnahme mit seiner Kamera. Dreissig Jahre später erweisen sich seine Bilder als einzigartige Zeugnisse eines historischen Augenblicks - unspektaktulär und dadurch umso ergreifender

This collection of essays demonstrates how the heritagization of the past has played a vital role in processes and strategies related to the making of socio-cultural identities, the establishing of political legitimacies, and the pursuit of economic and geopolitical gains. The contributions range from those dealing with the impact of UNESCO's World Heritage Convention in the Indian Ocean world as a whole to those that address the politics of cultural heritage in various distinct maritime sites such as Zanzibar, Mayotte, Cape Town, the Maldives, Calcutta and Penang.     Abstract: Current understandings of ageing and diversity are impoverished in three main ways. Firstly, with regards to thinking about what inequalities operate in later life there has been an excessive preoccupation with economic resources. On the other hand, less attention has been paid to cultural norms and values, other resources, wider social processes, political participation and community engagement. Secondly, in terms of thinking about the 'who' of inequality, this has so far been limited to a very narrow range of minority populations. Finally, when considering the 'how' of inequality, social gerontology's theoretical analyses remain under-developed. The overall effect of these issues is that social gerontology remains deeply embedded in normative assumptions which serve to exclude a wide range of older people. This book aims to challenge and provoke the above described normativity and offer an alternative approach which highlights the heterogeneity and diversity of ageing.

    Abstract: Gefühle beeinflussen unser Verhalten überall - auch in der Wissenschaft. Aber bei Forscher_innen sind Affekte suspekt: Sie werden als Störungen betrachtet, die eine objektive Arbeit gefährden. Dabei beeinflussen sie zwangsläufig den Forschungsprozess, weshalb ihre kritische Analyse ein fester Bestandteil wissenschaftlicher Tätigkeit sein sollte. Insbesondere die Feldforschung löst regelmäßig emotionale Reaktionen (etwa zu Kriegsgräuel, Diskriminierungen von Bevölkerungsgruppen oder sozialen Unterschieden) aus, welche die Beobachtung bedingen, das Verständnis beeinflussen und die Theoriebildung lenken. In den Beiträgen des Bandes werden fächerübergreifend eine Reihe textanalytischer und empirischer Methoden vorgeschlagen, mit deren Hilfe Emotionalität in der Forschung transparent gemacht werden kann

    Abstract: Pamila Gupta takes a unique approach to examining decolonization processes across Lusophone India and Southern Africa, focusing on Goa, Mozambique, Angola and South Africa, weaving together case studies using five interconnected themes. Gupta considers decolonization as simultaneously a historical event and an ethnographic moment, accessed through written, oral and visual and eyewitness accounts of how people experienced of the transfer of state power. She looks at the materiality of decolonization as a movement of peoples across vast oceanic spaces, demonstrating how it was a process of dispossession for both the Portuguese formerly in power and ordinary colonial citizens and subjects. She then discusses the production of race and class anxieties during decolonization, which took on a variety of forms but were often articulated through material objects. The book aims to move beyond linear histories of colonial independence by connecting its various regions using the theme of decolonization, suggesting a productive way forward to writing post-national narratives. Finally, Gupta demonstrates the value of using different source materials to access narratives of decolonization, analyzing the work of Mozambican photographer Ricardo Rangel as well as lyrical narratives and ethnographical observations. Portuguese Decolonization in the Indian Ocean World provides a nuanced understanding of Lusophone decolonization, revealing the perspectives of people who experienced it

    Abstract: This book uses the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), as an analytical entry point to understand and illuminate post-War Europe and the drive to create an identity that can legitimise the European project in its broadest sense. The ESC presents an idealised vision of Europe, and this has long existed in a strained relationship with reality. While the trajectory of post-war European integration is a high-profile topic, we believe that the ESC offers a unique and innovative way to think about the role of culture in the history of post-War European integration and tensions between the ideal and reality of European unity. Through the series of case studies that make up the chapters in this book, analysis brings these interlinked tensions to light, exploring the roles of culture and identity, alongside and a productive conversation with the political and economic projects of post-war European integration. Julie Kalman is Associate Professor of History at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. She has published widely on the history of French-speaking Europe. Ben Wellings is a Senior Lecture in Politics and International Relations at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He is the author of English Nationalism, Brexit and the Anglosphere: wider still and wider (2019) and English Nationalism and Eurosceptcism: losing the peace (2012). Keshia Jacotine works in research development at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.     Abstract: "The idea of etnos came into being over a hundred years ago as a way of understanding the collective identities of people with a common language and shared traditions. In the twentieth century, the concept came to be associated with Soviet state-building, and it fell sharply out of favour. Yet outside the academy, etnos-style arguments not only persist, but are a vibrant part of regional anthropological traditions. Life Histories of Etnos Theory in Russia and Beyond makes a powerful argument for reconsidering the importance of etnos in our understanding of ethnicity and national identity across Eurasia. The collection brings to life a rich archive of previously unpublished letters, fieldnotes, and photographic collections of the theory's early proponents. Using contemporary fieldwork and case studies, the volume shows how the ideas of these ethnographers continue to impact and shape identities in various regional theatres from Ukraine to the Russian North to the Manchurian steppes of what is now China.
