Kurzfassung: This book combines autoethnographic reflections, poetry, and photography with the aim to bridge the gap between creative practice and scholarly research. Drawing on an innovative combination of different forms of knowledge, creative writing and street photographs are presented as means to reflect on the development of knowledge and self-knowledge through a thought-provoking dialogue with Roland Barthes' post-structuralist work. What does it mean to be a creative practitioner in a world traversed by values of capitalism and artificial intelligence? What does it mean to teach creative practices in such an environment? The urban landscape of Singapore, with the Jewel Changi mall, the Universal Studios, and Little India in the background, is the stage where the capitalist demands of modern city life grapple with the solitary act of writing poetry and taking photographs through the personal experience of the author. Capitalist realism and depression realism entwine with Barthes' notion of vita nova in a mesmerizing phantasmagoria that drags the reader to the bowels and secret pleasures of the creative process

Kurzfassung: "Indigenous Peoples and Borders considers the problem of state borders, which are frequently legacies of colonialism, and their impact on Indigenous Peoples around the world. Indigenous lands are frequently divided by such borders creating difficulties for their Native inhabitants that were until recently largely disregarded by international law and international relations scholars. The contributors, including many Indigenous rights practitioners, take up issues of sovereignty, power, globalization, economic integration, and self-determination in areas from Bangladesh to the Russian Arctic to Mexico. The collection takes a comparative, multidisciplinary, and global approach showing the ways Indigenous Peoples are challenging and working around borders, even as they are constrained by them

Kurzfassung: "During the First World War, thousands of young African men conscripted to fight for France and Britain were captured and held as prisoners of war in Germany, where their stories and songs were recorded and archived by German linguists. In Knowing by Ear, Anette Hoffmann demonstrates that listening to these acoustic recordings as historical sources, rather than linguistic samples, opens up possibilities for new historical perspectives and the formation of alternate archival practices and knowledge production. She foregrounds their archival presence as individual speakers and positions their recorded voices as responses to their experience of colonialism, war, and the journey from Africa to Europe. By engaging with the recordings alongside written sources, photographs, and artworks depicting the speakers, Hoffmann personalizes speakers from present-day Senegal, Somalia, Togo, and Congo. Knowing by Ear includes transcriptions of and audio links to specific recordings of spoken and sung texts, revealing acoustic archives as significant yet under-researched sources to recover historical speaking positions of colonized subjects and listen to the acoustic echo of colonial knowledge production"--

Kurzfassung: "In Disappearing Rooms Michelle Castañeda lays bare the criminalization of race enacted every day in U.S. immigration courts and detention centers. She uses a performance studies perspective to show how the theatrical concept of mise-en-scéne offers new insights about immigration law and the absurdist dynamics of carceral space. Castañeda draws upon her experiences in immigration trials as an interpreter and courtroom companion to analyze the scenography-lighting, staging, framing, gesture, speech, and choreography-of specific rooms within the immigration enforcement system. Castañeda's ethnographies of proceedings in a "removal" office in New York City, a detention center courtroom in Texas, and an asylum office in the Northeast reveal the depersonalizing violence enacted in immigration law through its embodied, ritualistic, and affective components. She shows how the creative practices of detained and disappeared peoples living under acute duress imagine the abolition of detention and borders. Featuring original illustrations by artist-journalist, Molly Crabapple, Disappearing Rooms shines a light into otherwise hidden spaces of law within the contemporary deportation regime. Kurzfassung: "In Beauty Regimes, Genevieve Clutario reveals how beauty politics in the Philippines created new relationships between colonial institutions, private industries, and diverse social worlds. During the turbulent transition between Spanish, US, and Japanese empires and the anti-colonial nationalist movement in the Philippines, beauty and fashion shaped intertwined projects of imperial expansion and modern nation-building. Beauty and fashion transformed political, economic, social, and cultural power that converged in the Philippines during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Philippines became both a source and resource of beauty, though not always for Filipinos themselves. This pathbreaking book offers new ways of understanding beauty's central place in the making of imperial and nationalist power"--

Kurzfassung: The struggle against neoliberal order has gained momentum over the last five decades---to the point that economic elites have not only adapted to the Left's critiques but incorporated them for capitalist expansion. Venture funds expose their ties to slavery and pledge to invest in racial equity. Banks pitch microloans as a path to indigenous self-determination. Fair-trade brands narrate consumption as an act of feminist solidarity with women artisans in the global South. In Capitalist Humanitarianism Lucia Hulsether examines these projects and the contexts of their emergence. Blending historical and ethnographic styles, and traversing intimate and global scales, Hulsether tracks how neoliberal self-critique creates new institutional hegemonies that, in turn, reproduce racial and neocolonial dispossession. From the archives of Christian fair traders to luxury social entrepreneurship conferences, from US finance offices to Guatemalan towns flooded with their loan products, from service economy desperation to the internal contradictions of social movements, Hulsether argues that capitalist humanitarian projects are fueled as much by a profit motive as by a hope that racial capitalism can redeem the losses that accumulate in its wake

Kurzfassung: "In 2002, armed Hindu mobs attacked Muslims in broad daylight in the west Indian state of Gujarat. The pogrom, which was widely seen over television, left over one thousand dead. In Composing Violence Moyukh Chatterjee examines how highly visible political violence against minorities acts as a catalyst for radical changes in law, public culture, and power. He shows that, far from being quashed through its exposure by activists, media and politicians, state-sanctioned anti-Muslim violence set the stage for transforming India into a Hindu supremacist state. The state and civil society's responses to the violence, Chatterjee contends, reveal the constitutive features of modern democracy in which riots and pogroms are techniques to produce a form of society based on a killable minority and a triumphant majority. Focusing on courtroom procedures, police archives, legal activism, and mainstream media coverage, Chatterjee theorizes violence as a form of governance that creates minority populations. By tracing the composition of anti-Muslim violence and the legal structures that transform that violence into the making of minorities and majorities, Chatterjee demonstrates that violence is intrinsic to liberal democracy"--

Kurzfassung: "Children of the Soil traces the relationships between indigenous Malagasy people, Comorian migrants, and French colonizers across several generations in the Indian Ocean port city of Mahajanga, Madagascar. Focusing on the built environment, Tasha Rijke-Epstein considers the complex dynamics between African groups and the spatial and formal ways that they asserted their presence and claimed space in the city before, during, and after colonization. Rijke-Epstein focuses on the articulation of Malagasy power through indigenous architectural forms; then shifts her focus to consider how Comorian migrants shaped the city's spatial and cultural terrain, marrying into existing Malagasy families, constructing mosques, and animating street life. Yet despite their longstanding ties to Madagascar and shared cultural lexicon, Comorian migrants were targeted in a series of violent uprisings in 1976 that resulted in the deaths of at least 1,000 people and the expulsion of more than 16,000 people from Mahajanga. Children of the Soil gives readers a new way to understand the role of material environments in shaping national and urban belonging, as well as to understand the wave of expulsions that happened across post-colonial societies"--

Kurzfassung: "Elizabeth A. Davis's Artifactual explores two different kinds of knowledge-making through an engagement with forensic science and documentary filmmaking in post-war Cyprus. Part One follows the forensic archaeologists and anthropologists who work to locate, exhume, identify, and repatriate the remains of Cypriots killed in episodes of violence and buried in secret graves before and during the war, from 1963 to 1974. Specifically, this section follows Davis's ethnographic work with Cyprus's Committee on Missing Persons (CMP), a bi-communal body established under UN auspices that is charged with determining the location and identity of the bodies of over two thousand Cypriots who went missing during the violence of the 1960s and 70s. Part Two addresses the visual archive of violence in Cyprus. Davis traces the development of an aesthetics of the archive in Cypriot films and how this archive has been used in artistic and political projects of reckoning with the past through documentary film. The two parts are juxtaposed as ways of trying to reconstruct and narrate the past, in what is both an epistemological and ethnographic consideration of representation, science, and ethnography itself"--

Kurzfassung: "In Myriad Intimacies postcolonial theorist, spiritual practitioner, and filmmaker Lata Mani oscillates between text and video, poetry and prose, genre and form, register and voice, and secular and sacred to offer a transmedia exploration of the interrelatedness of lives, concepts, frameworks, and aspects of self. She draws on concepts from tantra-a philosophy that celebrates matter as alive, embodiment as sacred, and the senses as a form of intelligence-alongside feminist, critical race, and cultural theory to meditate on the ways in which everyone and everything exists in mutually constitutive interrelations. Addressing issues ranging from desire, the body, nature, and love, to otherness, identity politics, social justice, #MeToo, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Mani foregrounds the power and necessity of recognizing relationality as foundational. Throughout, she offers a way of reframing what we think we know and how we come to know it, demonstrating that it is only by acknowledging and embracing the indivisible and interdependent nature of existence that we restore our true intimacy with each other and the world"--

Kurzfassung: "In TV Snapshots, Lynn Spigel explores snapshots of people posing in front of their television sets in the 1950s through the early 1970s. Like today's selfies, TV snapshots were a popular photographic practice through which people visualized their lives in an increasingly mediated culture. Drawing on her collection of over 5,000 TV snapshots, Spigel shows that people did not just watch TV: women used the TV set as a backdrop for fashion and glamour poses; people dressed in drag in front of the screen; and, in pinup poses, people even turned the TV setting into a space for erotic display. While the TV industry promoted on-screen images of white nuclear families in suburban homes, the snapshots depict a broad range of people across racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds that do not always conform to the reigning middle-class nuclear family ideal. Showing how the television set became a central presence in the home that exceeded its mass entertainment function, Spigel highlights how TV snapshots complicate understandings of the significance of TV in everyday life"--

Kurzfassung: Slo 'Mo and the Pace of Black Queer Life -- Where's the Joy in Accountability? Black Joy at Its Limits -- Ordinary ENERGY -- An Oral History of the Future of Burnout.
Kurzfassung: "In Feels Right Kemi Adeyemi presents an ethnography of how black queer women use dance to assert their physical and affective rights to the city. Adeyemi stages the book in queer dance parties in gentrifying neighborhoods, where good feelings are good business. But feeling good is elusive for black queer women whose nightlives are undercut by white people, heterosexuality, neoliberal capitalism, burnout, and other buzzkills. Adeyemi documents how black queer women respond to these conditions: how they destroy DJ booths, argue with one another, dance slowly, and stop partying altogether. Their practices complicate our expectations that life at night, on the queer dance floor, or among black queer community simply feels good. Adeyemi's framework of "feeling right" instead offers a closer, kinesthetic look at how black queer women adroitly manage feeling itself as a complex right they should be afforded in cities that violently structure their movements and energies. What emerges in Feels Right is a sensorial portrait of the critical, black queer geographies and collectivities that emerge in social dance settings and in the broader neoliberal city"--

Kurzfassung: "In Climatic Media, Yuriko Furuhata traces climate engineering from the early twentieth century to the present, emphasizing the legacies of Japan's empire-building and its Cold War alliance with the United States. Furuhata boldly expands the scope of media studies to consider technologies that chemically "condition" the Earth's atmosphere and socially "condition" the conduct of people, focusing on the attempts to monitor and modify indoor and outdoor atmospheres by Japanese scientists, technicians, architects, and artists in conjunction with their American counterparts. She charts the geopolitical contexts of what she calls climatic media by examining a range of technologies such as cloud seeding and artificial snowflakes, digital computing used for weather forecasting and weather control, cybernetics for urban planning and policing, Nakaya Fujiko's fog sculpture, and the architectural experiments of Tange Lab and the Metabolists, who sought to design climate-controlled capsule housing and domed cities. Furuhata's transpacific analysis offers a novel take on the elemental conditions of media and climate change"--

Kurzfassung: "Not long after her father died, Afsaneh Najmabadi discovered that her father had a secret second family and that she had a sister she never knew about. In Familial Undercurrents, Najmabadi uncovers her family's complex experiences of polygamous marriage to tell a larger story of the transformations of notions of love, marriage, and family life in mid-twentieth-century Iran. She traces how the idea of "marrying for love" and the desire for companionate, monogamous marriage acquired dominance in Tehran's emerging urban middle-class. Considering the role that late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century romance novels, reformist newspapers, plays, and other literature played in that process, Najmabadi outlines the rituals and objects such as wedding outfits, letter writing, and family portraits that came to characterize the ideal companionate marriage. She reveals how in the course of one generation men's polygamy had evolved from an acceptable open-practice to a taboo best kept secret. At the same time, she chronicles the urban transformations of Tehran and how its architecture and neighborhood social networks both influenced and became emblematic of the myriad forms of modern Iranian family life"--

Kurzfassung: "The story of how the U.S.-Mexico border has become more dangerous for migrant crossing has preoccupied scholars across a range of fields. As necessary as this has been, the overwhelming focus on border crossers has eclipsed the consequences of military occupation on Native tribes whose land and bodies spill across the border, including mounting numbers of Maya refugees. Unsettled Borders follows the science and technological development of border surveillance back to military innovations tasked with seeing the invisible movements of Apache and Chiricahua warriors across the rugged terrain of the western frontier. Felicity Amaya Schaeffer follows a range of militarized surveillance innovations across time and space, recalling the Spanish lookout points erected to monitor Maya in the Yucatan, the superior eyes of Indian scouts, automated border avatars, and swarming bee drones. From the perspective of Native border inhabitants, a broader story emerges about how mechanized seeing attempts to eradicate Native sacred and animate relation with land. With an eye on the more-than-human world, Apache, O'odham and Maya teach us about the impossibility of borders in their sacred scientific worldviews that see relation where westerners impose segregated seeing and knowing. Unsettled Borders returns to ancestral practices-from beekeepers caring for the Melipona bees who bring back their forests to O'odham relations with saguaro peoplehood amputated by border walls. The border comes alive with a resurgent force of Native land defenders who refuse extraction, occupation, and surveillance by the futile attempts to build virtual and iron-cast walls that will ultimately fail to contain life and erect borders around the world"--

Kurzfassung: "Fragments of Truth is Naomi Angel's analysis of the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which was established in 2008 to document the abuses of the Indian residential school system and to provide opportunities of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Focusing on visual media, this book examines how the Commission, itself a fraught project, served as a vehicle through which memory, trauma, and visuality were able to surface in often startling ways. Angel explores how archival images of the residential schools produced by the Canadian government have been reclaimed by Indigenous communities, thereby pointing to the unstable and shifting nature of what documentation of abuse signifies. The Commission thus offers a unique optic through which to survey the long history of colonial oppression of First Nations populations"--

Kurzfassung: Introduction: Hydrocolonialism : the view from the dockside -- The custom house and hydrocolonial governance -- Customs and objects on a hydrocolonial frontier -- Copyright on a hydrocolonial frontier -- Censorship on a hydrocolonial frontier -- Conclusion: Dockside genres and postcolonial literature.
Kurzfassung: "In Dockside Reading Isabel Hofmeyr traces the relationship between print culture, colonialism, and the ocean through the institution of the British colonial custom house. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, dockside customs officials would leaf through publications looking for obscenity, politically objectionable materials, or reprints of British copyrighted works, often dumping these condemned goods into the water. These practices, echoing other colonial imaginaries of the ocean as a space for erasing incriminating evidence of the violence of empire, informed later censorship regimes under Apartheid in South Africa. By tracking printed matter from ship to shore, Hofmeyr shows how literary institutions like copyright and censorship were shaped by colonial control of coastal waters. Set in the environmental context of the colonial port city, Dockside Reading explores how imperialism colonizes water. Hofmeyr examines this theme through the concept of hydrocolonialism, which puts together land and sea, empire and environment."

Drawing upon discursive analysis, empirical data, and ethnographic fieldwork as well as popular culture texts, Charlie Yi Zhang investigates how love is orchestrated as an apparatus of sentiments through the systems of gender, class, and sexuality that integrates individual subject-making with regulation of population to serve collective interests of the Chinese state and transnational capital. Zhang deciphers the ways in which love is projected as a cluster of desirable potentialities, such as private property ownership, upward mobility, and endurable heteronormative intimacy, that generate enduring attachment shaping people's subjectivities. These love-impelled individual subjectivities are aligned with gendered, classed, and sexualized regulation of population by the state to reproduce cheap labor that has fueled China's marketization and reintegration with the global economy."

Kurzfassung: This book presents the history of Chinese migrations to Europe within a "transcalar glocal" perspective. That is, it moves between international, national, and local levels of analysis to describe the different constraints Chinese migrants deal with in their lives. It problematizes and complicates ethnicity and identity and refers to controversial concepts like Roman-ness and Chinese-ness, used as identity signifiers. Ultimately, by presenting the lives of ethnic Chinese living in Italy in both global and local context, this book hopes to show the value of a "glocal" oral history of Chinese migrations.-

Kurzfassung: "Vehicles, their infrastructures, and the environments they traverse are fundamental to the movement of migrants and states' attempts to govern them. This volume's contributors use the concept of viapolitics to name and foreground this contested entanglement and examine the politics of migration and bordering across a range of sites. They show how these elements constitute a key site of knowledge and struggle in migratory processes and offer a privileged vantage point from which to interrogate practices of mobility and systems of control in their deeper histories and wider geographic connections. This transdisciplinary group of scholars explores a set of empirically rich and diverse cases: from the Spanish and European authorities' attempts to control migrants' entire trajectories to infrastructures of escort of Indonesian labor migrants; from deportation train cars in the 1920s United States to contemporary stowaways at sea; from illegalized migrants walking across treacherous Alpine mountain passes to aerial geographies of deportation. Throughout, Viapolitics interrogates anew the phenomenon called "migration," questioning how different forms of contentious mobility are experienced, policed, and contested. Contributors. Kurzfassung: "AbdouMaliq Simone's The Surrounds brings abolitionist theorizing to the untapped potentialities of contemporary urbanization in the so-called Global South. The book mobilizes various developments in critical Black thought to conceptualize urban spaces that have exceeded or subverted their design in response to individual or collective use. Composed as an interweaving of ethnography, literary reflection, theory, and poetics, The Surrounds reads against the grain of some common assumptions: that memory is critical to freedom; that alternative worlds are possible, and that rebellion is redeemed by the creation of such worlds. As an intersection of urban theory, Black study, and decolonial and Islamic thought, the book poses the surrounds as those spaces beyond capture, not immune from it, not free of it, but rather something aside it as a locus of continuous rebellion. The surrounds introduce space and spaciousness to the regimes of computation that seek to precisely define the parameters through which people, built environments, and the more than human relate with each other. Although situated in multi-sited ethnography and urban studies, The Surrounds speaks to a much wider range of Black critical theory and will be of interest across global Black studies"--

Kurzfassung: "Breaks in the Air provides a social and cultural history of rap music on Black radio in New York City from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. Radio shows were crucial in the growth of hip hop in New York, and Klaess explores the intertwined histories of sounds, institutions, communities, and legal formations converging in that post-Civil Rights period. John Klaess offers a careful analysis of the city's three crucial commercial radio stations-WBLS-FM 107.5, WRKS-FM 98.7, and WHBI-FM 105.9-drawing on an archive of tape recordings of the stations' broadcasts. Klaess moves from a history of deregulation in the broadcasting industry to the ways that American racial politics inflected the broadcast of rap and looks at how these radio stations engaged with this unique historical situation, how technologies both aided and limited their broadcasts, how their broadcasts were received, and what the public broadcast of this music and culture meant to young people of color in New York"--

Kurzfassung: In Sissy Insurgencies Marlon B. Ross focuses on the figure of the sissy in order to rethink how Americans have imagined, articulated, and negotiated manhood and boyhood from the 1880s to the present. Rather than collapsing sissiness into homosexuality, Ross shows how sissiness constitutes a historically fluid range of gender practices that is expressed as a physical manifestation, discursive epithet, social identity, and political phenomenon. He reconsiders several black leaders, intellectuals, musicians, and athletes within the context of sissiness, from Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and James Baldwin to Little Richard, Amiri Baraka, and Wilt Chamberlain. Whether examining Washington's practice of cleaning as an iteration of sissiness, James Baldwin's self-fashioned sissy deportment, or sissiphobia in professional sports and black nationalism, Ross demonstrates that sissiness can be embraced and exploited to conform to American gender norms or disrupt racialized patriarchy. In this way, sissiness constitutes a central element in modern understandings of race and gender.

The interdisciplinary contributors approach this work through philosophical, theological, historical, and aesthetic lenses. Euro-descended Christianity has historically defined itself by its Others while paradoxically claiming to represent and speak to humanity in its totality. The essays in Beyond Man disrupt the normative categories of religion and philosophy by rearranging presumptions about what constitutes philosophy of religion"--

The genres of music explored include various forms of pop, rock, folk, and "yellow music," as well as traditional musics of Asia. Through focus groups, interviews with Black doulas, as well as cultural critique, Nash discusses not only how the biopolitical state and Black feminists invoke Black mothers to gain political currency, but also how Black mothers themselves engage with the ways their images and lives are deployed. The project is an invitation for Black feminists to theorize, organize, and freedom-dream in ways that imagine Black motherhood apart from anticipated trauma, a vision that has positive material outcomes for Black mothers and which refuses to reproduce Black motherhood merely as a trauma category"--

Kurzfassung: "Arbitrage is a trading practice that involves buying the same or similar items where they are priced low, and selling them where they are priced high, to gain a profit simply from the disparity in prices. It is fundamental both to the practice of financial trading and to economic understandings of how financial markets function. In Capturing Finance, Carolyn Hardin offers a new way of understanding arbitrage, as a means for capturing value in financial capitalism. Hardin addresses the contextual factors that allow such value capture to take place, arguing that every form of capture is reliant upon a system of abstract domination built around a principle that makes participation in capture seem necessary. For industrial capitalism, that principle is labor. In financial capitalism, that principle is risk. The idea that we must take on risky debt to afford everyday life, or invest in risky financial markets to secure future goals like saving for college or retirement, appears to be common sense. But it also sets up the conditions for arbitrage to thrive. Indeed, subprime mortgage borrowing facilitated the arbitrage in mortgage-backed securities in the run up to the financial crisis. In this book, Hardin argues that our taken-for-granted understandings of how risk works in financial markets allows arbitrage capture to take place even when it leads to crises and long-term ills. It is thus risk that must be addressed as a political issue, if any challenge to the current impacts of financial capitalism is to be mounted"--

Kurzfassung: "A Mass Conspiracy to Feed People describes a global movement of anarchist food-sharing projects, Food Not Bombs, and some of the global cities whose distinctive patterns of waste, hunger, and displacement foster it. Drawing on over five years of fieldwork as a Food Not Bombs (FNB) volunteer in Seattle, David Boarder Giles focuses on the global movement of grassroots soup kitchens that recover wasted grocery surpluses and redistribute them in public spaces. The book's exploration begins in the city's dumpsters, in order to uncover the logic by which perfectly edible commodities are nonetheless abandoned and scarcity thereby manufactured; it next shifts to the city's streets, to describe the gleaming aesthetic and social order reproduced there-which excludes both detritus and abject bodies; and finally it traces the pathways of some of those surpluses into anticapitalist political movements and social spaces such as the FNB kitchen. In the process, it aims to describe the mutual entanglement of the global city and FNB, and more broadly, of global capitalism and anticapitalist resistance"--

Kurzfassung: "Atmospheres of Violence is a study of the forms of violence levied against trans/queer and gender nonconforming people in the United States. While the recent past, roughly from the Stonewall uprisings of 1969 to the present, is usually narrated as a time of LGBT equality, with the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, the expansion of hate crimes legislation, and marriage equality, during this same period there has been an escalation in murders of trans women, particularly those who are Black and Brown. It is within this contradiction, which Eric A. Stanley argues is a structuring antagonism, that Atmospheres of Violence dwells. Rather than suggesting that such violence is evidence of individual phobias, Stanley asserts that the consistency of such harms points to a much larger structure of our social world. Atmospheres of Violence offers a theory of anti-trans/queer violence that works to unsettle the individual actor and offers an analysis, built through a motley archive of suicide notes, AIDS activist histories, surveillance tapes, prison interviews, and other ephemera of attack, that situates these forms of violence as central to, and not an aberration from, liberal democracy"--

Kurzfassung: "The dystopian transformation of contemporary societies that has expanded to various parts of the world and to diverse domains of human activities requires a rethinking of our conceptual repertoire rather than the reinvention of neologisms. The terms that we consider as belonging to a political lexicon need to be understood in relation to a constellation of concepts and a diversity of experiences across different societies in both comparative and relational terms. Chapters in Words and Worlds are organized around individual terms that form part of a political lexicon that many use to understand what is unfolding before their eyes. The juxtaposition of these different terms and the cross references that show unexpected connections across diverse domains of social life, whether concentrated in small spaces or dispersed across vastly distant ones, challenge the reader to see these dystopian developments through a different modality of reading and sensing. Words like knowledge, authority, democracy, corruption, inequality, and crisis have become part of our everyday vocabulary; yet, what animates these words, what give them life, what makes them dead, urges us to examine these common vocabularies from new and different angles rather than using them as crutches to avoid facing current disturbing realities"--

Kurzfassung: "Throughout his career, the internationally renowned Haitian anthropologist Michel-Rolph Trouillot unsettled key concepts in anthropology, history, postcolonial studies, Black studies, Caribbean studies, and beyond. From his early critique of the West to the ongoing challenges he leveled at disciplinary and intellectual boundaries and formations, Trouillot centered the Caribbean as a site both foundational to the development of Western thought and critical to its undoing. Trouillot Remixed offers a representative cross-section of his work that includes his most famous writings as well as lesser-known and harder to find pieces essential to his oeuvre. Encouraging readers to engage with Trouillot's scholarship in new ways, this collection demonstrates the breadth of his writing, his enduring influence on Caribbean studies, and his relevance to politically engaged scholarship more broadly

Kurzfassung: "Media Crossroads is an anthology that examines space and place in film, television, video games, and other media via critical intersectional lenses and other interpretive strategies. The eighteen essays in this volume draw from and build upon research on gender and space across numerous disciplines and situate such studies in conversation with research on sexuality, race, ethnicity, age, class, ability, and other domains of identity as they relate to space. The contributors not only consider the way screens produce intersections between and among various identities through spectatorship, play, and social media, but they also focus on how representations of space in film and media address matters of oppression, discrimination, privilege, and inequity"--

Reckoning with Slavery resituates the early modern as the space out of which race, racial hierarchies, notions of value and trade, and ideas of gender and reproduction are mutually constituted. Through a study of numeracy, trade, counting, and commerce, the lives and experiences of enslaved women in the sixteenth and seventeenth century English Atlantic world come into focus. Kurzfassung: "In the past 30 years, discourses on queerness and the central political issues of LGBT life that originate in the United States-- like same-sex marriage-- have been exported and used to identify the presence of queer community in other parts of the world. QUEER KOREA brings together historical, ethnographic, and literary essays that establish a queer historiography of Korea. Editor Todd Henry asserts that Western forms of queerness, and the reading practices used to identify queerness in the American academy, are insufficient to describe the range of queer life on the Korean peninsula. He argues that particular developments in Korean modernity-- including its histories of colonialism, nationalism, and authoritarianism from the turn of the century to the Cold War-- have informed the language and politics of queerness in Korea and the Korean diaspora. In addition to compiling the first volume focused on queerness in Korea, including work from the South Korean academy, this volume asserts that placing queerness at the center of Korean studies, rather than at the margins, produces new analytic possibilities for the field. The chapters are divided into three parts. The chapters in Part I, "Unruly Subjects and Colonial Modernity," trace the origins of queer subjectivity in modern Korea through political struggles against Japanese colonial rule, and anti-communist/anti-capitalist conflict during the Korean War. In one chapter John Treat reads scenes of migration between a colonized satellite city in Korea to the center of Japanese imperialism in Tokyo in modernist writer Yi Sang's short story "Wings." Drawing on José Esteban Muñoz's concepts of utopia and disidentification, Treat argues that Yi's characters and prose both move between Japanese colonial and Korean nationalist forms of power in ways that assert the queerness of the colonial subject. Part II, "Gender, Kinship, and Nation Under Cold War," includes chapters that link geopolitical shifts during the Cold War to emergent forms of gender and sexual variance in Korean popular culture. Kim Chung-kang's essay looks at how the trope of male cross-dressing in South Korean B-movies developed as a critical response to a resurgence of family-centered, patriarchal politics under Park Chung Hee's authoritarian government. She argues that this form of non-binary representation constituted critical refusal of hegemonic politics in a moment when Korea's mass culture was highly regulated. In Part III, "Consumer, S ...

Kurzfassung: "OTHERWISE WORLDS is an anthology motivated by the possibilities of other ways of being, feeling, thinking, and relating that exist outside of a settler-colonial, anti-Black ontology. In exploring the practices needed to access these possibilities, the editors and contributors call for new modes of understanding the intersections and tensions that hold Black and Indigenous communities in relation. Pushing past previous articulations of equivalence or incommensurability, solidarity or antagonism, the essays, interviews, and works of art that comprise the volume cohere around a singular, but multivocal, method: engaging with relation as a process, rather than a predetermined reality, in order to draw out the moments and spaces in which the "otherwise" might be reached. Navigating not only the formative debates that have brought Black studies and Indigenous studies scholars to the current impasse, but also the promises of otherwise futures, the editors and contributors read across difference and resist disciplining and disciplinary norms. The collection is divided into four interrelated thematic parts, each a series of provocations and engagements that highlight imaginative strategies and new forms of praxis. The first section considers otherwise potentialities through the corporeal form and the concerns of violence and pain that are themselves intrinsically bound to the body. Essays by Ashon Crawley and Denise Ferreira da Silva draw upon Hortense Spillers's invocation of flesh in order to confront understandings of corporeality focused on the sovereign body. The second section turns to Native studies scholars' use of land and conquest as analytics that productively unsettle the terrain of Black studies' inquiry (and draws a distinction between settler colonial studies and Native studies), with essays by Tiffany King and Chad Infante connecting the afterlives of slavery and conquest. The third section considers the possibilities of Black and Indigenous being-together as a site of both surveillance and resistance; essays by Maile Arvin and Cedric Sunray consider the erasure of Black and Indigenous socialities in the context of anti-Black racism among Native communities. The fourth and final section centers the crucial role of kinship in building future imaginaries through community and a more capacious understanding of relation. This section in particular draws upon artwork, notably that of Kimberly Robertson and Se'mana Thompson. This book will be of interest ...

Kurzfassung: "ARE YOU ENTERTAINED? re-examines Blackness in popular culture in the digital age. Inspired by Stuart Hall's essay "What is this 'Black' in Black popular culture?" this book contains essays and interviews which explore the complexities of Black popular culture with a focus on the history that has led to this point. Highlighting the challenge Black popular culture must negotiate as it contends with white consumerism and the white gaze, this book emphasizes the cultural changes of the last quarter century and their impacts. ARE YOU ENTERTAINED? covers both new and little known material, bridging the gap between early scholarship on Black popular culture and new scholarship. The collection offers a wide range of perspectives on aspects of popular culture across time period, medium and genre"--

Kurzfassung: "POOR QUEER STUDIES contextualizes the material conditions under which Queer Theory is produced in the academy. Locating elite universities as the primary loci of Queer Theory, and as producers of and investors in racialized class stratification, Matt Brim interrogates what role Queer Theory has in shoring up class and racial disparities. How, Brim asks, is Queer Theory-a field theoretically dedicated to disrupting structures of power and inequality-implicated in the classed structures of the academy? Brim contends that, in its current formation, Queer Theory-or what he dubs "Rich Queer Theory"-is propelled by universities who refuse to serve poor students and only hire faculty who have graduated from the "prestige pipeline." Moreover, Brim argues that class as an analytic has effectively dropped out of Queer Theory scholarship. To counter these trends, Brim argues for a "Poor Queer Studies" that attends to class differences within the queer academy by examining the material reality through which "subversive" and "antinormative" Rich Queer Theory is produced. For Brim, the "Poor" in Poor Queer Studies allows for two connotations: the lack of material resources at under-resourced and non-elite universities, and the theoretical "holes" around class and racialized class positions in Rich Queer Studies. In chapter 1 Brim offers a case study of his own institution-The College of Staten Island, CUNY-by way of contextualizing the need for a Poor Queer Studies. In chapter 2 Brim expands his introductory argument that the exclusion of low-income students and working-class faculty from Queer Theory is a field-defining feature. In chapter 3 Brim offers a "vocational Queer Studies" that forces academics to consider how Queer Studies prepares students for labor outside of the academy. Chapter 4 is an examination of how students who are mothers have shaped Brim's understanding of Poor Queer Studies. In chapter 5 Brim centers John Keene's 2015 book, Counternarratives, to arrive at a conversation about learning how to read Black queer literature. In the conclusion, Brim proposes a notion of "queer ferrying" by which resources are shared between rich and poor institutions. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of queer studies, black queer studies, American studies, higher education studies, and labor studies"--

Kurzfassung: "In this work, Laura Doyle weaves together feminist-intersectional, decolonial, and dialectical thought to challenge narratives of world history at new depths while also reviving our sense of historical dynamism. Her analysis of the intertwining of literature with geopolitical economy makes visible an underlying struggle over the very terms of relationality. Meticulously informed by new historiography on empires and by critical theory, Doyle's study highlights the geopolitical fact of multiple vying empires in any one period and focuses on the uncertain, unequal, existential conditions created by this field of power over millennia"--

Kurzfassung: African American women have played a pivotal part in rock and roll-from laying its foundations and singing chart-topping hits to influencing some of the genre's most iconic acts. Despite this, black women's importance to the music's history has been diminished by narratives of rock as a mostly white male enterprise. In Black Diamond Queens, Maureen Mahon draws on recordings, press coverage, archival materials, and interviews to document the history of African American women in rock and roll between the 1950s and the 1980s. Mahon details the musical contributions and cultural impact of Big Mama Thornton, LaVern Baker, Betty Davis, Tina Turner, Merry Clayton, Labelle, the Shirelles, and others, demonstrating how dominant views of gender, race, sexuality, and genre affected their careers. By uncovering this hidden history of black women in rock and roll, Mahon reveals a powerful sonic legacy that continues to reverberate into the twenty-first century.
