Scheirer takes a deep dive into the origins of fake news, conspiracy theories, reports of the paranormal, and other deviations from reality that have become part of mainstream culture, from image manipulation in the nineteenth-century darkroom to the literary stylings of large language models like ChatGPT. Scheirer investigates the origins of Internet fakes, from early hoaxes that traversed the globe via Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs), USENET, and a new messaging technology called email, to today's hyperrealistic, AI-generated Deepfakes. Die Argumentation für eine postmigrantische Theoriewende soll der Steigerung von Sichtbarkeit marginalisierter künstlerischer Praktiken und Stimmen zuarbeiten und - an der Schnittstelle von Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft - kritische wie produktive Diskussionen rund um das Themenfeld Postmigration anstoßen. Deshalb sollen auch solche Stimmen zu Wort kommen, die sich außerhalb des Universitären mit der Bezeichnung 'postmigrantisch' identifizieren und die noch stärker in akademische Diskurse Eingang finden sollten. Ähnlich der postkolonialen Perspektive wird die postmigrantische Linse zur Betrachtung gesellschaftlicher (Macht-)Strukturen herangezogen. Aus der Position der Critical-Whiteness-Forschung geht es ferner darum, einen Beitrag zur (An-)Erkennung von strukturellem und institutionellem Rassismus zu leisten und Diskurshoheiten einer weißen Dominanzgesellschaft zu hinterfragen. Interessanterweise bedienen sich in den letzten Jahren immer häufiger Autor*innen, Künstler*innen, Schreibkollektive und Theater des Terminus der Postmigration, teilweise wird er als Selbstbeschreibung und Kampfbegriff mit selbstermächtigendem Potenzial verwendet. Postmigration als Label eines weiß-dominierten Buchmarktes oder als aktivistische Selbstpositionierung - eine umfassende Theoretisierung wie kritische Reflexion der Verwendung des Begriffs ist die Aufgabe einer engagierten Kulturwissenschaft zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts. Die zentralen Fragen des Bandes lauten: Was bedeutet ein Postmigrant Turn? Welche Gegenstände nimmt er in den Fokus? Welche Analysemerkmale hält er bereit?     Abstract: In the aftermath of the Second World War, the French government cultivated images of sensual and sophisticated white French women in an attempt to reestablish its global image as a great nation. They promoted the beauty, sexual appeal, and general allure of French women, all while shrinking the boundaries of what was considered beautiful. Charm Offensive explores how this elevation of French femininity created problems on both sides of the equation: the pressure on French women to conform to an exacting physical standard was immense, while the inability of anyone else to access that standard resulted in a sense of failure. Drawing on cultural figures like Air France hostesses, tourism workers, and celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot, Charm Offensive offers an innovative understanding of a tumultuous time of decolonization

Jahrhundert, abstrakte Kunst aus dem 20. Jahrhundert: Was ein Bild zeigt oder gerade nicht zeigt, enthüllt ein bestimmtes figuratives Schema, das durch die formalen Mittel und durch die Anordnung, mit der es seine Wirkungskraft entfaltet, gekennzeichnet ist. Bilder ermöglichen uns so einen Zugang zu dem, was unterschiedliche menschliche Lebensformen ausmacht. Gestützt auf einen globalen und historisch weit ausgreifenden Vergleich von Werken einer atemberaubenden Vielfalt entwickelt Philippe Descola in seinem Buch die Grundlagen für eine Anthropologie der menschlichen Bildkunst. Die bildliche Darstellung ist nicht allein der Fantasie derer überlassen, die die Bilder erschaffen. Wir stellen nur dar, was wir wahrnehmen oder uns vorstellen, und wir stellen uns nur vor und nehmen nur wahr, was uns die Gewohnheit zu unterscheiden gelehrt hat. Der visuelle Pfad, den wir bei der Abbildung der Welt einschlagen, hängt für Descola daher davon ab, welcher der vier Regionen des von ihm entdeckten ontologischen Archipels wir angehören: Animismus, Naturalismus, Totemismus oder Analogismus. Jeder von ihnen entspricht eine bestimmte Art, die Welt zu begreifen, ihre Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten wahrzunehmen, insbesondere die verschiedenen Trennlinien zwischen Menschen und Nichtmenschen. Ein augenöffnendes Buch! Biographische Informationen Philippe Descola, geboren 1949, ist emeritierter Professor für Anthropologie am Collège de France und gilt als der bedeutendste französische Anthropologe der Gegenwart. In seinen Forschungen entwickelt er eine vergleichende Anthropologie, die sowohl die Humanwissenschaften als auch die Reflexion über die ökologischen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit revolutioniert hat. Für sein Werk wurde er vielfach ausgezeichnet, u. a. mit der Goldmedaille des Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), der höchsten wissenschaftlichen Auszeichnung Frankreichs. Sein Buch Die Formen des Sichtbaren. Eine Anthropologie der Bilder gewann 2021 den Prix Fondation Martine Aublet.

    Abstract: "In the early to mid-twentieth century, the governments of Ecuador and Guatemala sought to expand Western medicine within their countries, with the goals of addressing endemic diseases and improving infant and maternal health. These efforts often clashed with indigenous medical practices, particularly in the rural highlands. Drawing on extensive, original archival research, historian David Carey Jr. shows that indigenous populations embraced a syncretic approach to health, combining traditional and new practices. At times, the governments of both nations encouraged--or at least allowed--such a synthesis, yet they also attacked indigenous lifeways, going so far as to criminalize native medical practitioners and to conduct medical experiments on indigenous people without consent. Health in the Highlands traces the experiences of curanderos, midwives, bonesetters, witches, doctors, and nurses--and the indigenous people they served. Carey interrogates the relationship between 'progressive' public health policy and indigenous well-being, offering lessons from the past that remain relevant in the present. Our best way forward, this history suggests, may be a compassionate syncretism that joins indigenous approaches to healing with science and a pursuit of environmental and social justice"--
    Abstract: Populated by curanderos, midwives, bonesetters, witches, doctors, nurses, and the indigenous people they served, this nuanced history demonstrates how cultural and political history, misogyny, racism, and racialization influence public health. In the first half of the twentieth century, the governments of Ecuador and Guatemala sought to spread scientific medicine to their populaces, working to prevent and treat malaria, typhus, and typhoid; to boost infant and maternal well-being; and to improve overall health. Drawing on extensive, original archival research, David Carey Jr. shows that highland indigenous populations in the two countries tended to embrace a syncretic approach to health, combining traditional and new practices. At times, both governments encouraged-or at least allowed-such a synthesis: even what they saw as "nonscientific" care was better than none. Yet both, especially Guatemala's, also wrote off indigenous lifeways and practices with both explicit and implicit racism, going so far as to criminalize native medical providers and to experiment on indigenous people without their consent. Both nations had authoritarian rule, but Guatemala's was outright dictatorial, tending to treat both women and indigenous people as subjects to be controlled and policed. Ecuador, on the other hand, advanced a more pluralistic vision of national unity, and had somewhat better outcomes as a result

Spirited Diasporas offers a glimpse into the frequently misunderstood religions of Afro-Cuban Lukumi̹, Haitian Vodou, and Brazilian Candomble̹, adding to the growing research on the transnational yet personal nature of African diasporic religions. In these accounts, practitioners from many origins illustrate the work and commitment they undertook to learn and become initiated in these traditions. They reveal in the process a variety of experiences that are not often documented. Their perspectives also show the expanding contemporary demographics of African-descended religions, many of whose members identify as LGBTQ or are part of other minoritized populations, and they counter inaccurate and often racialized portrayals of these religions as being anti-modern and geographically limited. Lifestyle revolution charts how class culture, rather than being destroyed by mass consumption, was remade from flat-pack furniture, Mediterranean cuisine and lifestyle magazines. Novelists, cartoonists and playwrights satirised the tastes of the emerging middle classes, while sociologists claimed that an entire population was suffering from 'status anxiety', but underneath it all, a new order was being constructed out of duvets, quiches and mayonnaise, easy chairs from Habitat, white emulsion paint and ubiquitous pine kitchen tables. More than just a world of symbolic goods, this was an intimate environment alive with new feelings and attitudes

    Abstract: "When used in India, the term Kala Pani refers to the cellular jail in Port Blair where the British colonizers sent a select category of freedom fighters. In the diaspora it refers to the transoceanic migration of indentured labour from India to plantation colonies across the globe from the mid-19th century onwards. This volume discusses the legacies of indenture in the Caribbean, Reunion, Mauritius, and Fiji, and how they still imbue our present. More importantly, it draws attention to India and raises new questions: doesn't one need, at some stage, to wonder why this forgotten chapter of Indian history needs to be retrieved? How is it that this history is better known outside India than in India itself? What are the advantages of shining a torch onto a history that was made invisible? Why have the tribulations of the old diaspora been swept under the carpet at a time when the successes of the new diaspora have been foregrounded? What do we stand to gain from resurrecting these histories in the early 21st century and from shifting our perspectives? A key volume on Indian diaspora, modern history, indentured labour, and the legacy of indentureship, this volume examines these questions largely through the frame of important works of literature and cinema, folk songs and oral tales, making it an artistic enquiry of the past and of the present. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of world history, especially labour history, literature, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, diaspora studies, sociology and social anthropology, Indian Ocean studies, and South Asian studies."
