Abstract: "This book provides one of the most detailed and comprehensive examinations of the Moroccan argan tree, the products derived from it and its cultural significance. The Moroccan argan trade is booming, but as the tree provides important ecological functions and plays an important role, both financially and culturally, for the Amazigh (Berber) people it has become a key topic of debate. This book thoroughly examines the production stories, benefits and impacts and provides a value chain analysis which compares different cooperatives and approaches to production. It assesses the fair-trade approaches and attempts at sustainable production of the bio-trade resource. While being a vital source of income, the argan tree has a significant cultural importance to the indigenous people and the book assesses the impact of the argan trade on their well-being, community and livelihoods. It examines indigenous knowledge and intellectual property issues relating to the trade as well as Berber-state law and politics. Assessing factors relating to legal and economic geography international trade, socio-cultural and human-nature relationships, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of the argan tree which will appeal to students, scholars and practitioners"--

Abstract: "Agriculture, mining and related rural industries have been central to the development of Australia's economy. This book details the role that the Australian Government has played in the making of rural and regional Australia, particularly since World War II. The book reviews these policies and evaluates them with regards the commitments undertaken by the Government to contribute towards vibrant, rural communities. Policy areas addressed include agriculture, water, education, welfare and population, natural resource management, resource extraction, Indigenous and affairs, localism, rural research and regional innovation, Youth Affairs and the devolution of regional governance. Overall two distinct policy strategies can be observed: one wherein the government saw its role as part of the entrepreneurial state and a sector wherein government has increasingly taken itself out of industry development, leaving this role to the market. Having considered these strategies and their impacts, the book concludes that policy over the past 40 years has not in fact contributed to a more vibrant, prosperous rural and regional Australia. Rural and Regional Futures concludes with several chapters looking to the future. One chapter explores what the role of the state can be within a social market economy while the final chapter gives consideration to the initial steps rural communities will need to take to begin the process of revitalisation. While these materials present as a case study of developments in Australia, the policy shift from the Government as entrepreneur to a focus on markets is an international one and as such, the insights offered by this book will have wide appeal"--

Abstract: While the phenomenon of embodied knowledge is becoming integrated into the social sciences, critical geography, and feminist research agendas it continues to be largely ignored by agro-food scholars. This book helps fill this void by inserting into the food literature living, feeling, sensing bodies and will be of interest to food scholars as well as those more generally interested in the phenomenon known as embodied realism. This book is about the materializations of food politics; "materializations", in this case, referring to our embodied, sensuous, and physical connectivities to food production and consumption. It is through these materializations, argues Carolan, that we know food (and the food system more generally), others and ourselves

Abstract: This book focuses on the contributions that organic farming offers to wider social change. It considers the role of all those involved in creating an organic sector. By providing a range of quantitative and qualitative analyses of organic 'farm-to-fork' networks, the book shows how the way organic farming is practiced holds the potential for changes in industry structure - changes that may well form the basis for the food system in the 21st century. The book's 18 chapters are organized around five themes that reflect the continuing development of organic farming and the diversity of the sociological approach to organic food and farming. These themes include: (i) organic movements in northwestern Europe; (ii) organic food quality and the consumer; (iii) problems for organic farmers around the globe; (iv) principles and practice of organic farming; and (v) new directions for organic sector development. The book has a subject index.

Abstract: This book analyses the functions, content, methods, findings and impact of social and cultural research carried out by the worldwide network of 16 international agricultural research centres of the CGIAR. It brings together the perspectives of 50 eminent scholars and social researchers from 30 countries working within the centres or in outside academic and development institutions. The contributions examine critically the priorities, strengths, and weaknesses of research on the sociostructural, behavioural, cultural and institutional variables of developing agriculture, forestry, livestock and fisheries. The studies focus on farmers' values, needs, knowledge, their patterns of social organization, issues of food security, natural resource management and poverty reduction. Alternative models of multidisciplinary research, reuniting biological, natural, economic and social sciences, are scrutinized in the light of experience and results, with emphasis on the nature of social science research as a source of international public goods and a key contributor to induced development. The book is intended for researchers of agricultural and rural development, economics, sociology, culture and anthropology. It has 22 chapters in addition to an editors' preface, and has a subject index.

Abstract: Drinking has always meant much more than satisfying the thirst. Drinking can be a necessity, a comfort, an indulgence or a social activity. Liquid Pleasures is an engrossing study of the social history of drinks in Britain from the late seventeenth century to the present. From the first cup of tea at breakfast to mid-morning coffee, to an eveining beer and a 'night-cap', John Burnett discusses individual drinks and drinking patterns which have varied not least with personal taste but also with age, gender, region and class. He shows how different ages have viewed the same drink as either demon poison or medicine. John Burnett traces the history of what has been drunk in Britain from the 'hot beverage revolution' of the late seventeenth century - connecting drinks and related substances such as sugar to empire - right up to the 'cold drinks revolution' of the late twentieth century, examining the factors which have determined these major changes in our dietary habits.

Abstract: Taking a unique anthropological apprach, Bush Base: Forest Farm explores the management of resources in third would development programmes. The contributors, all distinguished anthropologists with practical experience of development projects, focus on the role of human cultural imagination in the use of environmental resources. They challenge the traditional sharp distinction between human settlement and natual environment (farm or camp, forest or bush), and argue that development programmes should place at their centre an appreciation of people's cosmologies and cultural understandings.
