    Abstract: Although "entanglement" has become a keyword in recent German history scholarship, entangled studies of the postwar era have largely limited their scope to politics and economics across the two Germanys while giving short shrift to social and cultural phenomena like gender. At the same time, historians of gender in Germany have tended to treat East and West Germany in isolation, with little attention paid to intersections and interrelationships between the two countries. This groundbreaking collection synthesizes the perspectives of entangled history and gender studies, bringing together established as well as upcoming scholars to investigate the ways in which East and West German gender relations were culturally, socially, and politically intertwined.

    Abstract: Als in den 1960er Jahren die »Hippies« aufkamen, erkannten darin manche eine »neue Jugendbewegung«. Tatsächlich fanden sich im alternativen Milieu der 1970er und 1980er Jahre nicht wenige Praktiken, politische Ideen und habituelle Muster, die an die Lebensreformbewegung der Jahrhundertwende erinnerten: freie Sexualität und Freikörperkultur, Siedlung auf dem Lande, alternative Haartracht und Bekleidung, Kritik der modernen Gesellschaft, Streben nach Gemeinschaft, politischer Radikalismus. Zugleich unterschieden sich die Kontexte dieser Kritik: Urbanisierung und industrielle Moderne auf der einen, postindustrieller und, auf der kulturellen Ebene, postmoderner »Strukturbruch« auf der anderen Seite. Die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger untersuchen zum einen, inwieweit sich diese Phänomene ähneln oder unterscheiden, und zum anderen fragen sie nach den Verbindungslinien personeller oder institutioneller Art sowie den Rezeptionsmustern der Lebensreform im Alternativmilieu. When the “hippies” emerged in the 1960s, contemporary observers spoke of a “new youth movement”, relating them to the Jugendbewegung of the early 20th century. In fact, there were quite a few practices, political ideas, and habitual patterns in the alternative milieu of the 1970s and 1980s, which seemed to be familiar from the Lebensreform (life reform) movement of the turn of the century: free sexuality and nudism, settlement in the countryside, alternative hairstyles and clothing, criticism of modern society, striving for community, and political radicalism. At the same time, the contexts of this critique differed: urbanization and industrial modernity on the one hand, postindustrial and, on the cultural level, postmodern “structural break” on the other. The volume examines the extent to which the two phenomena were similar, but also looks at differences, personal or institutional links and patterns of reception.

Italian migrants that had to leave the peninsula in the long sixteenth century because of their heterodox Protestant faith is a topic that has its deep roots in Italian Renaissance scholarship since Delio Cantimori: It became a part of a twentieth century form of Italian leyenda negra in liberal historiography.     Abstract: “Generation” has become a central concept of cultural, historical and social studies. This book analyses how this concept is currently used and how it relates to memory and constructions of historical meaning from educational, historical, legal and political perspectives. Attempts to compare different national generations or to elaborate boundary-crossing, transnational generations still constitute an exception. In trying to fill this gap, this collection of essays concentrates on one crucial moment of “the age of extremes” and on one specific generation: the year 1945 and its progressive politicians and intellectuals. Focusing on Italy, West Germany and France, it suggests that the concept of generation should be regarded as an open question in space and time. Therefore, this volume asks what role generation played in the intellectual and political debates of 1945: if it facilitated change, if it served as source of solidarity and cohesion and how post-war societies organized their time

    Abstract: Recent research has demonstrated that, in the Roman, Late Antique, Early Islamic and Medieval worlds, glass was traded over long distances, from the Eastern Mediterranean, mainly Egypt and Israel, to Northern Africa, the Western Mediterranean and Northern Europe. 'Things that travelled', a collaboration between the UCL Early Glass Technology Research Network, the Association for the History of Glass and the British Museum, aims to build on this knowledge. Covering all aspects of glass production, technology, distribution and trade in Roman, Byzantine and Early Medieval/Early Islamic times, including studies from Britain, Egypt, Cyprus, Italy and many others, the volume combines the strengths of the sciences and cultural studies to offer a new approach to research on ancient glass. By bringing together such a varied mix of contributors, specialising in a range of geographical areas and chronological time frames, this volume also offers a valuable contribution to broader discussions on glass within political, economic, cultural and historical arenas

    Abstract: Dieses Buch möchte dazu beitragen, unseren Blick auf die Interdependenzen zwischen Europa und der Welt zu schärfen. Das Meer diente dabei seit den ersten europäischen Entdeckungsfahrten nach Übersee als Brücke zwischen der Alten und den Neuen Welten in Übersee, es war sogar die Voraussetzung dafür. Die hier versammelten Beiträge sind als inhaltliche Ergänzung und Vertiefung der Sonderausstellung »Europa und das Meer« des Deutschen Historischen Museums Berlin konzipiert. Denn eine vergleichsweise komplexe Geschichte anhand einer zwangsläufig begrenzten Zahl von Exponaten sichtbar und zugänglich machen zu wollen, ist eine große Herausforderung für jedes Museum und seine Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter. Ohne die Reduktion auf das Wesentliche, Exemplarische geht es nicht, bestimmte Aspekte des Ausstellungsnarrativs können eben nicht visualisiert werden. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes wurden von Autorinnen und Autoren verfasst, die als Spezialisten auf ihrem jeweiligen Gebiet an der Erzählung dieser Ausstellung mitgewirkt haben.     Abstract: Dieses Buch möchte dazu beitragen, unseren Blick auf die Interdependenzen zwischen Europa und der Welt zu schärfen. Das Meer diente dabei seit den ersten europäischen Entdeckungsfahrten nach Übersee als Brücke zwischen der Alten und den Neuen Welten in Übersee, es war sogar die Voraussetzung dafür. Die hier versammelten Beiträge sind als inhaltliche Ergänzung und Vertiefung der Sonderausstellung 〉〉Europa und das Meer〈〈 des Deutschen Historischen Museums Berlin konzipiert. Denn eine vergleichsweise komplexe Geschichte anhand einer zwangsläufig begrenzten Zahl von Exponaten sichtbar und zugänglich machen zu wollen, ist eine große Herausforderung für jedes Museum und seine Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter. Ohne die Reduktion auf das Wesentliche, Exemplarische geht es nicht, bestimmte Aspekte des Ausstellungsnarrativs können eben nicht visualisiert werden. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes wurden von Autorinnen und Autoren verfasst, die als Spezialisten auf ihrem jeweiligen Gebiet an der Erzählung dieser Ausstellung mitgewirkt haben.     Abstract: Deutsche Migranten in Argentinien: Ein historischer Beitrag zur Migrationsdebatte. Deutsche, österreichische und schweizer Einwanderer bildeten eine heterogene Gemeinde im Herzen der Metropole Buenos Aires. Sie entwickelten eine gemeinsame Erinnerungskultur, die ihnen Orientierung und Identität gab. Welche Charakteristika hatte diese Erinnerungskultur? Welche geschichtswissenschaftlichen Erklärungen gibt es für deren Herausbildung? Welche Erkenntnisse bringt uns dieser historische Fall für das Verständnis von Migration und Erinnerung in multiethnischen Gesellschaften in einer globalisierten Welt? Die Autorin zeigt, wie Aneignung und Abgrenzung von Geschichtsbildern in der Migrantengemeinde abliefen, die Entwicklung einer Meistererzählung und das Scheitern von geschichtspolitischen Projekten. Trotz vieler Bezüge zu den Herkunftsländern der Einwanderer war ihre Erinnerungskultur sehr stark von den Gegebenheiten in Argentinien, den Bedingungen vor Ort und der Zusammensetzung ihrer heterogenen Gemeinde abhängig.

    Abstract: Flucht und Migration prägten die Stadt- und Kulturgeschichte Hamburgs von der Neuzeit bis zur Gegenwart. Hamburg ist zentraler Flucht- und Transitort in zeithistorischen Migrationskontexten wie der französischen Emigration in den 1790ern und der Auswanderung in die USA ab 1800, aber auch für Flucht und Deportationen im Nationalsozialismus sowie Migrationsbewegungen nach 1945 bis heute. Der Band versammelt interdisziplinäre Beiträge namhafter Autor_innen, welche die Vielfalt dieser Aspekte betrachten - auch unter Einbezug von Untersuchungen der gegenwärtigen Wohnpraktiken von Geflüchteten in Hamburg. Damit eröffnen sich neue Perspektiven auf die Geschichte der Migration in Hamburg.

    Abstract: On account of its remarkable reach as well as its variety of schemes and features, migration in the Victorian era is a paramount chapter of the history of worldwide migrations and diasporas. Indeed, Victorian Britain was both a land of emigration and immigration. International Migrations in the Victorian Era covers a wide range of case studies to unveil the complexity of transnational circulations and connections in the 19th century. Combining micro- and macro-studies, this volume looks into the history of the British Empire, 19th century international migration networks, as well as the causes and consequences of Victorian migrations and how technological, social, political, and cultural transformations, mainly initiated by the Industrial Revolution, considerably impacted on people’s movements. It presents a history of migration grounded on people, structural forces and migration processes that bound societies together. Rather than focussing on distinct territorial units, International Migrations in the Victorian Era balances different scales of analysis: individual, local, regional, national and transnational.

    Abstract: The 'racial state' has become a familiar shorthand for the Third Reich, encapsulating its raison d'être, ambitions, and the underlying logic of its genocidal violence. The Nazi racial state's agenda is generally understood as a fundamental reshaping of society based on a new hierarchy of racial value. However, this volume argues that it is time to reappraise what race really meant under Nazism, and to question and complicate its relationship to the Nazis' agenda, actions, and appeal. Based on a wealth of new research, the contributors show that racial knowledge and racial discourse in Nazi Germany were far more contradictory and disparate than we have come to assume. They shed new light on the ways that racial policy worked and was understood, and consider race's function, content, and power in relation to society and nation, and above all, in relation to the extraordinary violence unleashed by the Nazis

    Abstract: The key role played by indentured servants in the settlement and development of the English colonies in the West Indies and the North American mainland in the first century of English colonisation has been overshadowed by interest in the much larger later trade in African slaves. 'There is Great Want of Servants' provides the first full examination of the English trade in indentured servants, which delivered the majority of an estimated 457,000 white people who migrated to the American colonies before 1720. English colonisation intended to create 'new Englands out of England' - to enlarge trade and plantation - but settlement required people to work the land. Labour had to be transported over 4,000 miles of threatening ocean in a new system of indentured servitude, in which people paid for their transportation and keep, with four years of unpaid service for adults, and more for children and adolescents. The system was not benign, neither in the sugar plantations of the West Indies and the tobacco plantations of Maryland and Virginia, nor at the centre of the trade in London and in other ports such as Bristol.--Dust jacket
