Abstract: "Population Geography: Social Justice for a Sustainable World surveys the ways in which geographic approaches may be applied to population issues, exploring how human populations are embedded in natural and social environments. It encourages students to evaluate population issues critically, given that population topics are at the heart of many of today's most contentious subjects. Through introducing students to different lenses of analysis (ecological, economic and social equity), the authors ask students to consider how different perspectives can lead to different conclusions on the same issue. Identifying and tackling today's population problems therefore requires an understanding of these diverging, and sometimes conflicting, perspectives. The text will cover all the key background information critical to any book on population geography (population size, distribution, and composition; fertility, mortality, and migration; population and resources), but will also push students to think critically about the materials they have covered using these twin lenses of sustainability and social justice. In this way, students move beyond simple fact learning towards higher-level skills such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of materials. This textbook will be a valuable resource for students of human geography, population geography, demography and diaspora studies"--

Abstract: "This volume offers a snapshot of anthropological perspectives on global challenges. Revealing that there is nothing 'global' about such challenges at all, these perspectives highlight the implications of reimagining the ways in which 'challenges' and 'crises' are understood and addressed. The collection shows that a combination of deep understanding of the past along with collaboration, cooperation and inclusive dialogue about the future improves the chances of positive action. It not only stresses that perspectives must change, but also shows us exactly how that change might be realised. Whilst the contributions are authored solely by anthropologists, they are not solely for anthropologists. The book is illustrative of the practical and theoretical insights that anthropology can offer those individuals, teams, and policy- and decision-makers engaged in research, mitigation or intervention practices in relation to global challenges. It contributes to broader understandings of the challenges we collectively face at this point in time and how we might collectively and effectively address them"--

Abstract: There are ongoing debates on the concepts surrounding the roles of Indigenous people in transforming the entrepreneurial landscape to promote socio-economic development. Arguably, the culture and ways of our lives, in the context of entrepreneurship, have a role in influencing social economic development. The ideals between the entrepreneurial practice of Indigenous people and their culture are somewhat commensal towards sustainable growth and development. The

Abstract: "This book provides insights into the policy, culture, and practice that influence the impact of local and indigenous entrepreneurs within communities which transcends to socio-economic development. This is important as the knowledge gained from our entrepreneurial diversity, can provide a platform to reduce social ills as a result of unemployment and give a sense of belonging within the social context. This book can create practical insights into academia from a global perspective of indigenous and local entrepreneurs leading to community economic development. Moreover, many scholars and writers in particular who wish to share their entrepreneurial journeys with the rest of the world will be provided with an excellent opportunity through this book to do so. In some cases, there are few role models to emulate, so this book will provide insights from scholars who have excelled in the entrepreneurial landscape"--

Abstract: "Societal grand challenges have taken a toll on humanity, which finds itself at a crossroads. The concentration of wealth and economic inequality, the dominance of Big Tech firms, the loss of privacy and free choice, and the overconsumption and abuse of natural resources have been reinforced by globalization. Regulation, legislation, international treaties, and government and corporate policies have fallen short of offering sufficient remedies. This book identifies the root cause of these problems and offers a bold solution: a new economic system, free from the design flaws that have contributed to these societal grand challenges. The proposed cooperative economy is an ethical community-driven exchange system that relies on collective action to promote societal values while accounting for resource constraints. Unlike the modern economic system that is predominantly driven by opportunistic behavior, the cooperative economy moves away from a materialistic orientation and follows a more balanced perspective that leverages prosocial behavior. The book explains how this new system adopts design principles that promote self-sufficiency of communities, sustainability and entrepreneurship while limiting overconsumption and excessive profit-making. It enhances economic equality by leveraging price subsidization and by restricting salary differences. The book describes how the system serves the interests of consumers, vendors, and employees while preventing the accumulation of power by the platform owner who operates this system. This book is invaluable reading for policymakers who have been searching for solutions to some of the grand challenges that our society faces, and to managers who have sought alternative ways to cope with platform ecosystems, resource shortages, and supply chain disruptions. It revisits long-held assumptions, offering a treatise and food for thought, as well as a plan for concrete action. The book is also highly relevant to scholars and students in the study of economics, strategy, innovation, and public policy and to all readers who are concerned about the future of our planet and society"--

It considers the ways that we interact with our environments, presenting a comprehensive account of how people negotiate and use the urban landscape. Set within current debates concerning urban futures, societal issues, sustainable cities, health and well-being, the book explores our innate need for contact with the natural world through biophilic design thinking to expand our knowledge base and promote a wider understanding of the importance of these interactions on our collective well-being. It responds to questions such as, what are the urban qualities that support our well-being? As an urbanised society what are the environmental determinants that promote healthy and satisfying lifestyles? Beginning with an overview of concepts relating to biophilia and environmental engagement, it moves through current theory and practice, different pathways and their characteristics, before presenting real world examples and applications through illustrated case studies in the UK, USA and across Europe. With a particular focus on the experience of individuals, the book is essential reading for students, researchers, and practitioners of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, design and health sciences, interested in the future of our cities and the importance of green spaces"-- Provided by publisher

Perspectives on the Transition Toward Green and Climate Neutral Economies in Asia offers innovative conceptual frameworks and theories, case studies, and empirical studies to understand how knowledge management and digital innovation can foster the transition towards more circular and climate neutral economies as well as greener economies in Asia. This book discusses how key and enabling digital tools and solutions and knowledge management can support the achievement of SDGs by 2030. Covering topics such as climate neutral economies, image recognition, and usability evaluation, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for deans, heads of departments, directors, politicians, policymakers, corporate heads, senior general managers, managing directors, librarians, students and educators of higher education, academicians, and researchers."--

Abstract: "This work, an initiative of the University of French Polynesia, Tahiti, showcases research collaboration between small island universities in the Pacific. It addresses a number of 'big issues' for Oceania which are also big issues for the world, concerning the biosphere and human society, sustainable development and well-being. The authors seek to create an ecosystem of knowledge through a dialogue, in English and French, between the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. The work also brings into perspective academic and traditional knowledge, with a view to enhancing cultural and agricultural practices and the development of public policy. Climate change, environmental degradation and food security are key questions for survival. How can the preservation of cultural heritage, the transmission of native languages and the integration of traditional knowledge into formal education contribute to a harmonious future? How is the phenomenon of violence relevant to an understanding of history, interpersonal relations and social inclusiveness, including for women in the political sphere? The Tongan-Fijian writer Epeli Hau'ofa described Oceania imaginatively as a 'Sea of Islands'. This volume sees Pacific islands as being interconnected in ways beyond imagining, in which nowhere is remote, where the peripheral has become a decentred centre"--

Abstract: As essential components of globalization, the study of practices and processes of space formation promotes a nuanced understanding of globalization. How do people create spaces for social action under the global condition, especially since the nineteenth century, when global interconnectedness increased rapidly? We explore the problem through specific case studies. Anthropologists, historians, geographers, sociologists, global studies scholars, and cultural studies scholars examine the agency of, e.g., members and staff of African regional organizations, Indian migrant workers, female GDR activists, Soviet planning experts, or US novelists. By studying elites as well as middle-class and micro-entrepreneurs - i.e. more and less influential actors - we encourage reflection on the relationship between power and space and examine how spatial entrepreneurs attempt to influence the shaping of space and their spatial literacy. The analysis aims at a better understanding of the different globalization projects, their crisis-like clashes, and the resulting conflictual development of spatial orders

Abstract: "A thought-provoking and provocative challenge to consumerism (with plenty of name-dropping and celebrity antics). Sassy and satirical, Shopomania is an economic, environmental and social study. This light-hearted, dark-souled dictionary of coined words, or "shoponyms," takes readers on a roller-coaster ride of avaricious antics and outrageous profligacy. Shopping in one form or another has existed for millennia but, aside from a few slumps, each generation has outdone the previous one. In the past fifty years, shopping--and its associated carbon footprint-- has grown exponentially. Berton argues that if we invented today's consumer culture, then we can invent something to replace it. We can do a better job of making the cycle of stuff truly circular rather than linear. We can be more environmentally, socially and politically conscious of what we buy and how it comes to us--and where it will go after we are finished with it. A species that has made shopping ubiquitous can figure all these things out with little more than co-operation and creativity, and by asking if it is really necessary to "own it now" as we have been told--endlessly-- since childhood. Must we possess a thing to enjoy it? Do we really need all that stuff?"--

Abstract: "This book discusses the pivotal role and importance of African indigenous knowledge systems (AIKS) in promoting, enhancing and sustaining livelihoods in Africa. The argument of the book is that AIKS are of prime importance in the betterment of sustainable livelihoods of people particularly in the rural communities in Africa. The book analyzes the use of AIKS with the objective of making it more acceptable and applicable to the mainstream educational and developmental agendas and programs in Africa. A significant contribution of this book is the promotion of AIKS to increase their visibility in the mainstream knowledge spaces and sustainable use to improve the quality of life and the betterment of livelihoods in Africa, especially in the communal areas where Eurocentric scientific practices are cost prohibitive. This book is geared towards developmental professionals, academic scholars, students, policy makers, researchers and the public who are interested in the field of AIKS and sustainable development in rural communities. The book is based on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches that incorporate the fields of agriculture, cultural and indigenous studies, development studies, education, geography, political science and sociology. Its multidisciplinary approach is of significance to readers as it encompasses perspectives on the multidimensionality and complexities of indigenous knowledges and sustainable community livelihoods and development"--

Abstract: "Sport has the potential to be a powerful platform for positive change. This is the first textbook to introduce the fundamentals of sport and sustainable development, examining how sport can be made more sustainable in terms of its social and environmental impact and how sport can achieve more comprehensive social and ecological objectives. Introducing key theory, and looking at how sustainability has been embedded in real-world organisations, projects and developments, the book draws on a range of multidisciplinary perspectives, including sport business and management, development studies, environmental studies, sociology, psychology and political science. Every chapter includes international case studies as well as the voices of professionals who have been successful in achieving sustainable development goals in and through their work. As pressure grows on sport, business and wider society to put sustainability and social and environmental responsibility at the center of their operations, the themes and topics examined in this book become ever more important. This is essential reading for any course on sport and sustainable development, and important background reading for any course in sport management, sport development, event studies, environment and society, business and the environment, or corporate social responsibility"--

Abstract: The vice chairman's doctrine is a transformative tale of leadership without authority, a perspective suiting a new breed of entrepreneurs and corporate warriors who reject control, live in a world of influencers and aspire to become one. It is a set of principles advocated, taught, and put into effect with respect to the acquisition and exercise of power, a coherent sum of assertions regarding influence and leverage within a company.

Abstract: This book explores global implications of human activities that trigger changes in climate and the appropriate scientific, adaptive, and sustainable approaches as a proven information tool. It reveals that the ecological, social, and economic dynamics of the changing earth encompasses huge uncertainties coupled with its ability to be linked to other forms of global change. From a scientific perspective, multiple efforts are expedient to integrate the many aspects of global changes. Increases in science and technology have afforded nations the ability to plan for the future by investing in adaptive and mitigative measures to monitor present and future changes. Just as the climatic and ecological impacts of climate change are unequally distributed, so is the adaptive capacity to cope with these impacts in different nations. Considering that wealth, infrastructure, and political stability all contribute to a nation's capacity to anticipate and respond to change. So, global South nations who are disadvantaged in these areas are faced with more inequalities and more unique adaptive strategies. There is need for increased aggregate efforts and interaction between scientists, stakeholders, and policy makers to improve both decision-making and global change in science. Scientists and researchers need to work on expanding the range of polices that are proposed, debated, and implemented. This way, novelty, new ideas and methodologies are infused into the society. At this point of multiple climate footprints, there is an immense need to explore all ideas evaluating their possibilities in presenting alternative futures, developing alternative policies, and adaptive options to solve the intractable ecological footprints of climate change.

Abstract: "Offering a comprehensive classification of the analytical approaches to the social within the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship studies, this book showcases a wide variety of perspectives and a collection of theoretical analysis tackling social complexity. The editors bring together contributors who mirror the heterogeneity present in the innovation and entrepreneurship fields, aiming to spark a discussion on the pluralist and critical nature of the social dimension within research, and to examine societal transformation processes and their attending multifaceted issues. Exploring how the social is analytically understood in innovation and entrepreneurship studies, the book proposes a non-exhaustive spectrum ranging from implicit assumption to explicit conceptualization in defining methodological foundations. Discussing the social and methodological challenges involved in the integration of social dimensions, this book will be a crucial companion for innovation and entrepreneurship scholars and students. This book is also a must-read for policy-makers and practitioners involved in societal transformation processes"--

Abstract: Introduction -- Part 1. The Social Life of Entrepreneurship -- Part 2. The History of Entrepreneurship in Anthropology -- Part 3. Global Contemporary Entrepreneurialism -- Conclusions
Abstract: "The Anthropology of Entrepreneurship provides a comprehensive overview of the unique contribution from anthropology to the field of entrepreneurship studies. Insights from anthropology illuminate the wider socio-cultural implications of entrepreneurialism, a moral order and social practice that is profoundly shaping contemporary society. Revisiting classic works in anthropology from a new angle, this book provides an exciting introduction to diverse conceptual framings of economic agency. The author also examines a wide range of 21st century ethnographies from the Global South, alongside his own research from across Europe. Readers meet ordinary people struggling with new social landscapes, including neoliberal urbanism, informal credit, heritage marketing, social enterprising, gift competition, and silicon utopias. With sensitivity to different theoretical, temporal, and ethnographic perspectives, the author presents a thorough cultural history of the entrepreneurship this ubiquitous, yet ambivalent contemporary character. This important volume will be of interest to scholars and students of anthropology, business studies and other related social sciences"--

Abstract: "Wake Up, This Is Joburg is a collaboration between photographer Mark Lewis and writer Tanya Zack. Originally published from 2014-2019 as ten separate photobooks by Fourthwall Books in South Africa, the collection builds a portrait of Johannesburg through individual stories and accompanying photographs. Ranging from butchers removing meat from cow heads in a parking garage meat market to underground gold miners hauling rock by hand from abandoned shafts under the city, these stories contribute to ethnographic studies of the city by showing the lived experience of its residents. At its heart, this project investigates how people are improvising to repurpose land and buildings, especially in Johannesburg's inner city. It brings attention to a vast informal economy, as well as widespread reconstruction as crumbling buildings are occupied, burned, stripped of parts, and rebuilt to serve the needs of the residents."

Abstract: By the late twentieth century, Japan had gained worldwide attention as an economic powerhouse. Having miraculously risen from the ashes of World War II, it was seen by many as a country to be admired if not emulated. But by the early 1990s, that bubble burst in spectacular fashion. The Japanese economic miracle was over. In this book, John Lie argues that in many ways the Japan of today has the potential to be even more significant than it was four decades ago. As countries face the prospect of a world with decreasing economic growth and increasing environmental dangers, Japan offers a unique glimpse into what a viable future might look like—a future in which people acknowledge the limits of the economy and environment while championing meaningful and sustainable ways of working and living. Beneath and beyond the rhetoric of growth, many Japanese are leading sustainable lives and creating a sustainable society. Though he does not prescribe a one-size-fits-all cure for the world, Lie makes the compelling case that contemporary Japanese society offers a possibility for how other nations might begin to valorize everyday life and cultivate ordinary virtues

Abstract: Achieving sustainability has been a driving ideal in fields as diverse as business management, environmental policy, and ecological science for more than twenty years, yet until now there has been no book that combines a non-technical introduction to the basic concepts of sustainability with examples that illustrate how these concepts are being applied in different fields. Sustainability: What Everyone Needs to Know® introduces readers to the systems thinking that underpins sustainability in its various applications, and what it is we risk by failing to adopt sustainable values and practices.

Abstract: "This book is an introduction to the long history of human learning, the environment and sustainable development - about our struggles with the natural world; first for survival, then for dominance, currently for self-preservation, and in future perhaps, even for long-term, mutually-beneficial co-existence. It charts the long arc of human-environment relationships through the specific lens of human learning, putting on record many of the people, ideas and events that have contributed, often unwittingly, to the global movement for sustainable development. Human learning has always had a focus on the environment. It's something we've been engaged in ever since we began interacting with our surroundings and thinking about the impacts, outcomes and consequences of our actions and interactions. This unique story, told by the authors is episodic rather than a connected, linear account; it probes, questions and re-examines familiar issues from novel perspectives, and looks ahead. The book is of particular interest to those studying (and teaching) courses with a focus on socio-economic and environmental sustainability, and NGOs whose work brings them face-to-face with the general public and social enterprises"--

Abstract: "With an empowering call to action, The Waste-Free World boldly invites us to end one of the greatest scams in history in order to achieve a bright, sustainable, and prosperous future. As microplastics collect in the ocean by the ton, natural resources are depleted, and cities face mounting landfill disposal bills, consumers and investors are becoming increasingly focused on the quality, durability and environmental footprint of products--yet many industries continue to try to sell us cheap goods and tell us that recycling is too expensive. In The Waste-Free World, Ron Gonen argues that the old take-make-waste economy has cost us consumers and taxpayers billions while cheating us out of a habitable planet. But it doesn't have to be this way. The Waste-Free World reveals the secret history of wasteful consumption and makes a powerful case for transitioning to a Circular Economy--where companies foster innovation, investors recognize long term value creation and consumers are able to align their values with the products they buy. Drawing from his experience as a recycling entrepreneur, public official, and Co-Founder and CEO of a firm investing in scaling the Circular Economy, Gonen showcases brilliant innovations worldwide, introducing us to the entrepreneurs and business leaders that are maximizing value by aligning the interests of customers, shareholders, and our environment."

Abstract: "The Himalayas are said to be the youngest mountain ranges in the world. This book studies the well-being of the eastern Himalayan forest-dwellers in terms of their capabilities and functioning. Using Amartya Sen's and Martha Nussbaum's Capabilities Approach, it examines the educational and health opportunities and substantial freedoms afforded to farmers and pastoralists living and working in the Senchal and Singalila Protected Areas of North Bengal, India. It also discusses the challenges and potential of the Forest Rights Act as a well-being delivery mechanism. The book adopts a comparative narrative of socio-ecological information generated from interviews, ecological field methods, remote sensing and participatory rural appraisals to provide insight on human development in conservation contexts. This volume will be of interest to students and researchers of conservation biology, development studies, socio-ecological systems studies, political ecology, human development index, ecological economics, environmental sociology, and South Asian studies. It will also be useful to policy-makers and NGOs in the conservation and livelihoods sector"--

Abstract: "The world economy today is at an historical inflection point. The neoclassical (industrial) model of economics is self-destructing while a new life-mimicking model, based on radically different assumptions, is emerging. Although rarely acknowledged, Nordic countries, which pioneered the life-mimicking model, have become world leaders in prosperity and productivity while others operating on the neoclassical model are trapped in downward spirals. By approaching economies as sub-systems of life rather than super-systems that are above life, we gain transformative insights. Such thinking led to the first circular economy experiments in Kalundborg (Denmark) during the 1970s, then quickly spread to the rest of the Nordic world. By placing a higher value on living assets (people and Nature) than on non-living capital assets, this approach generates harmony rather than divisiveness. Because Nordic people feel vested in the system and responsible for its success, they are extraordinarily innovative and productive. That is why each year Nordic companies are rated among the world's most sustainable and profitable in their fields. Written in an accessible way for non-economists, the book is ideal for those interested in the benefits of biomimicry and can be used to guide democratic countries along a proven path of self-renewal. Economies That Mimic Life will also provide useful background for corporate leaders in strategic thinking and scenario planning. Knowing which way the political-economic wind is blowing will become increasingly important to corporate survival"--

Abstract: "A New World-System: From Chaos to Sustainability examines the present crisis in the social and ecological environment that is producing profound, potentially catastrophic challenges to the planet and humanity, and outlines a process for moving forward to address these critical issues. This book is a cautionary interpretation of the present, and vision for the future. Unlike other books on this or allied subjects that are singularly focused, Part 1 surveys the five major threats facing humanity today: climate change, inequality and poverty, new technologies, migration and globalization. It approaches the challenge of integrating these phenomena into a global picture from a systems perspective rather than taking a purely reductionist approach to understanding what is occurring in the world today. Part 2 moves from identifying the problems to solving them with chapters examining the ability of the present world-system to address these issues and outlining a process for action. The book concludes by discussing what could follow capitalism as a social organizing strategy and, perhaps more importantly, the consequences to the planet if we do not construct a new world-system. This book is essential reading for students and scholars of sustainable development, climate change, environmental studies, rural and urban planning, environmental psychology, political economy, sociology, social policy, leisure studies and environmental politics. More broadly, it is a vital resource for all those interested in building a sustainable society"--

Abstract: In the field of business and management, the core concept associated with migration sees "difference and distance" as liabilities, whether they are national, cultural, geographic, or semantic. While existing research is valuable, recently it has been suggested that an emphasis on liabilities and adverse outcomes associated with such differences may hinder our understanding of the conditions that help to leverage the value of diversity in a wide range of contexts. Global Migration, Entrepreneurship and Society seeks to explore these seemingly interconnected processes, offering a safe space to critically examine the specific political contexts of excluded groups and develop a much-needed theoretical and policy-related set of writings that can cast light on the workings and complexities of processes of global migration, entrepreneurship and societal integration.

Abstract: Ultrasocial argues that rather than environmental destruction and extreme inequality being due to human nature, they are the result of the adoption of agriculture by our ancestors. Human economy has become an ultrasocial superorganism (similar to an ant or termite colony), with the requirements of superorganism taking precedence over the individuals within it. Human society is now an autonomous, highly integrated network of technologies, institutions, and belief systems dedicated to the expansion of economic production. Recognizing this allows a radically new interpretation of free market and neoliberal ideology which - far from advocating personal freedom - leads to sacrificing the well-being of individuals for the benefit of the global market. Ultrasocial is a fascinating exploration of what this means for the future direction of the humanity: can we forge a better, more egalitarian, and sustainable future by changing this socio-economic - and ultimately destructive - path? Gowdy explores how this might be achieved

Abstract: This volume addresses current concerns about the climate and environmental sustainability by exploring one of the key drivers of contemporary environmental problems: the role of status competition in generating what we consume, and what we throw away, to the detriment of the planet. Across time and space, humans have pursued social status in many different ways - through ritual purity, singing or dancing, child-bearing, bodily deformation, even headhunting. In many of the world's most consumptive societies, however, consumption has become closely tied to how individuals build and communicate status. Given this tight link, people will be reluctant to reduce consumption levels - and environmental impact -- and forego their ability to communicate or improve their social standing. Drawing on cross-cultural and archaeological evidence, this book asks how a stronger understanding of the links between status and consumption across time, space, and culture might bend the curve towards a more sustainable future
Note: "The project gained momentum when the Wenner-Gren Foundation sponsored a workshop, "Status Pursuits across Human Systems," at the University of Maine that brought together a group of distinguished archaeologists and anthropologists in October 2016 to discuss the issue against a background of environmental sustainability more generally." Abstract: "This volume addresses current concerns about the climate and environmental sustainability by exploring one of the key drivers of contemporary environmental problems: the role of status competition in generating what we consume, and what we throw away, to the detriment of the planet. Across time and space, humans have pursued social status in many different ways - through ritual purity, singing or dancing, child-bearing, bodily deformation, even headhunting. In many of the world's most consumptive societies, however, consumption has become closely tied to how individuals build and communicate status. Given this tight link, people will be reluctant to reduce consumption levels - and environmental impact - and forego their ability to communicate or improve their social standing. Drawing on cross-cultural and archaeological evidence, this book asks how a stronger understanding of the links between status and consumption across time, space, and culture might bend the curve towards a more sustainable future."

Abstract: "The history of sustainability assessment goes back more than 20 years, with the first scientific articles devoted to the matter appearing in the mid-1990s, as laid out in Chapter 1. Starting off with approaches strongly influenced by the older tradition of environmental impact assessments, the authors of Chapter 1 show how the sustainability assessment community has slowly but steadily transcended these origins to include more and more social and economic aspects of sustainability over the years, thereby considerably broadening the conceptual basis of sustainability assessment practices"--

Prof. Yarimar Bonilla, Hunter College."--Back cover

Abstract: "The 17 SDGs embody the collective aspirations of the world's peoples: peace, freedom, development, and sustainability. The challenges associated with the struggle for attainment of these goals and objectives are as diverse and complex as the variety of human societies, national conditions and natural ecosystems worldwide. The problems to be addressed range from extreme poverty and pandemics to racism and refugee crises. Some of the best strategies and solutions to these problems emerged from unlikely places; ranging from the corporate boardrooms and halls of administration to the fields of civic engagement and the vortices of crises. Often, a single person is the dauntless driving force behind these innovative programs and courageous experiments that made all the difference to the poorest and most disadvantaged social groups. Somehow, they were able to turn the abstract goals and principles of sustainability into concrete programs and effective action. This book, the first of its kind, offers a platform shares the individual experiences and personal studies of champions around the world that 'make sustainability work' in different contexts. In the trenches of practice, results are far from guaranteed, while sacrifice and obstacles are inevitable. These champions forge the paths forward - advocating ideas, mobilizing support, and exercising leadership - in diverse nations, organizations and communities. In their struggle, they develop plans and solutions that inevitably involve adaptation, sacrifice, trade-offs, and compromises that address the concerns of competing groups"--

Abstract: Our world is becoming more urban. More than fifty percent of the global population now lives in cities, which poses new challenges for sustainable development. This book integrates theory and methods of sustainability assessment with concepts from systems science to provide guidelines for assessing the sustainability of urban systems. It discusses different aspects of urban sustainability, from energy and housing, to mobility and health, covering social, economic and environmental factors, as well as the various stakeholders and actors involved. The book argues for the need to find models and solutions in order to design sustainable cities of the future in light of the complexity of urban social life. Including diverse case studies from the developed and developing world, this book provides a useful reference for researchers and students from a broad range of disciplines working in the field of sustainability, as well as for environmental consultants and policy makers.
