Weltbild und Habitus außereuropäischer Eliten und Musiker haben die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Klavier entscheidend geprägt. Claudius Torp zeichnet in seiner Globalgeschichte des Klaviers die Institutionen des Instrumentenhandels, der Missionen und Konservatorien nach und analysiert die Bedeutung des Klaviers in den drei Fallstudien USA, Südafrika und Japan.

    Abstract: A People's Music presents the first full history of jazz in East Germany, drawing on new and previously unexamined sources and vivid eyewitness accounts. Helma Kaldewey chronicles the experiences of jazz musicians, fans, and advocates, and charts the numerous policies state socialism issued to manage this dynamic art form. Offering a radical revision of scholarly views of jazz as a musical genre of dissent, this vivid and authoritative study marks developments in the production, performance, and reception of jazz decade by decade, from the GDR's beginning in the 1940s to its end in 1990, examining how members of the jazz scene were engaged with (and were sometimes complicit with) state officials and agencies throughout the Cold War. From postwar rebuilding, to Stalinism and partition, to détente, Ostpolitik, and glasnost, and finally to its acceptance as a national art form, Kaldewey reveals just how many lives jazz has lived.

    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries.

    Abstract: The Relentless Pursuit of Tone: Timbre in Popular Music assembles a wide spectrum of contemporary perspectives on how sound functions in an equally wide array of popular music. With subjects ranging from the twang of country banjos and the sheen of hip-hop strings to the crunch of amplified guitars and the thump of subwoofers on the dance floor, this volume attempts to bridge the gap between timbre, the purely acoustic characteristics of sound waves, and tone, an emergent musical construct that straddles the borderline between the perceptual and the political. The book’s chapters engage with the entire history of popular music as recorded sound, from the 1930s to the present day, under four large categories. The chapters in Part I, “Genre,” ask how sonic signatures define musical identities and publics; Part II, “Voice,” considers the most naturalized musical instrument, the human voice, as racial and gendered signifier, as property or likeness, and as raw material for algorithmic perfection through software; Part III, “Instrument,” tells stories of the way some iconic pop music machines—guitars, strings, synthesizers—got (or lost) their distinctive sounds; and Part IV, “Production,” puts it all together, asking structural questions about what happens in a recording studio, what is produced (sonic cartoons, rockist authenticity, empty space?), and what it all might mean. The book includes a general theoretical introduction by the editors and an afterword by noted popular music scholar Simon Frith.

    Abstract: With its dynamic choreographies and booming drumbeats, taiko has gained worldwide popularity since its emergence in 1950s Japan. Harnessed by Japanese Americans in the late 1960s, taiko's sonic largesse and buoyant energy challenged stereotypical images of Asians in America as either model minorities or sinister foreigners. While the majority of North American taiko players are Asian American, more than four hundred groups now exist across the United States and Canada, and these groups are comprised of people from a variety of racial and ethnic identities. Using ethnographic and historical approaches combined with performance description and analysis, this text explores the connections between taiko and Asian American cultural politics at the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality.

    Abstract: HipHop-Kultur ist global: In jeder Sprache wird gerappt, gesampelt wird alles, von Soul Funk Breaks über Klassik bis hin zum folkloristischen Bläsersatz und auf Youtube tanzen B-Boys aus der ganzen Welt vor Wänden voller Graffiti. Ausgehend von den frühen HipHop-Performances im New York der Siebziger untersucht der Autor die Entstehung der kulturspezifischen Körpertechniken im Kontext der elektronischen Medien und zeigt, wie Unterwanderungen technischer Konventionen die spätere Wanderung dieser Kulturpraxis und ihre lokale Reproduktion initiieren. Aus der Selbstinszenierung einer lokalen Gegenkultur wird im globalen Kontext eine Kultur der Selbstinszenierung, deren Widerstand sich nicht gegen ein kulturell Anderes, sondern gegen eine andere Kultur des Medialen richtet. Die Arbeit erklärt die medialen Dynamiken der Anfänge der HipHop Kultur anhand ihrer selbstreferentiellen Erzählstrategien in Rapmusik, Djing, Breakdance und Graffiti.

    Abstract: Forschung auf dem Gebiet »Hip-Hop und Religion« hat sich bisher meist auf religiöse Lesarten von Raptexten konzentriert und zudem Musikvideos bei dieser Betrachtung weitestgehend außer Acht gelassen. Eileen Simonow geht der These nach, dass religiöses Material in den Clips sakral und damit entgrenzend, in Bedeutungen überschießend - und damit im eigentlichen Sinne anti-religiös inszeniert - ist. Dafür werden Musikvideos des US-amerikanischen Mainstreams in ihrer komplexen Verschränkung der auditiven und visuellen Ebenen mit der Sakraltheorie Georges Batailles gelesen. In vier Analysen von Musikvideos - u.a. von Kanye West - wird das Sakrale als aus dem Sozialen hervorgehende Kraft im Spannungsfeld von Macht, Ideologie und Widerstand diskutiert

    Abstract: Plague, a devastating and recurring affliction throughout the Renaissance, had a major impact on European life. Not only was pestilence a biological problem, but it was also read as a symptom of spiritual degeneracy and it caused widespread social disorder.     Abstract: Singing together is a tried and true method of establishing and maintaining a group’s identity. Identity, Intertextuality, and Performance in Early Modern Song Culture for the first time explores comparatively the dynamic process of group formation through the production and appropriation of songs in various European countries and regions. Drawing on oral, handwritten and printed sources, with examples ranging from 1450 to 1850, the authors investigate intertextual patterns, borrowing of melodies, and performance practices as these manifested themselves in a broad spectrum of genres including ballads, popular songs, hymns and political songs. The volume intends to be a point of departure for further comparative studies in European song culture.     Abstract: Als experimentelle bundesdeutsche Popmusik im Laufe der 1970er Jahre zu transnationalem Ruhm kam, begann eine neue Ära der Popmusik. Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte des Pop kamen neueste Innovationen nicht mehr aus den Vereinigten Staaten oder dem Vereinigten Königreich, sondern aus der Bundesrepublik. Für einige Jahre galten Bands wie Kraftwerk, Can, Tangerine Dream, Amon Düül, Popol Vuh oder Faust - neben vielen anderen - als Pop-Avantgarde: in Europa, Nordamerika und weit darüber hinaus.Alexander Simmeth erforscht die Wurzeln des sogenannten Krautrock im Umfeld der jugendlichen Revolte am Ende der 1960er Jahre, die Rezeption zu Hause und in den beiden Ursprungsländern des Pop, und die Gründe für den andauernden Einfluss des Phänomens. Er identifiziert Krautrock als zentrales Moment kultureller Transnationalisierung in der Bundesrepublik, indem er grenzübergreifende Erfahrungen ebenso in den Blick nimmt wie den Austausch von Konzepten und Ideen
    Abstract: When West-German experimental pop rose to transnational fame in the early 1970s, it marked nothing less than the beginning of a new era. For the first time in pop history, the latest innovations originated outside the United States and the United Kingdom; for several years, bands such as Kraftwerk, Can, Tangerine Dream, Amon Düül or Faust - among many others - were considered pop avant-garde, across Europe and the United States. In his book, Alexander Simmeth traces the roots of the so-called Krautrock in West Germany's late 1960s, its zealous reception at home and in the two motherlands of pop, and the reasons for its lasting impact in the decades to come. He identifies Krautrock as a key site of the transnational in West-German cultural history, focusing on the exchange of concepts and ideas, on shared experiences across borders, as well as on mutual key concepts such as authenticity and identity

    Abstract: David A. McDonald rethinks the conventional history of the Palestinian crisis through an ethnographic analysis of music and musicians, protest songs, and popular culture. Charting a historical narrative that stretches from the late-Ottoman period through the end of the second Palestinian intifada, McDonald examines the shifting politics of music in its capacity to both reflect and shape fundamental aspects of national identity. Drawing case studies from Palestinian communities in Israel, in exile, and under occupation, McDonald grapples with the theoretical and methodological challenges of tracing "resistance" in the popular imagination, attempting to reveal the nuanced ways in which Palestinians have confronted and opposed the traumas of foreign occupation.     Abstract: David Conway analyses why and how Jews, virtually absent from Western art music until the end of the eighteenth century, came to be represented in all branches of the profession within fifty years as leading figures – not only as composers and performers, but as publishers, impresarios and critics. His study places this process in the context of dynamic economic, political, sociological and technological changes and also of developments in Jewish communities and the Jewish religion itself, in the major cultural centres of Western Europe. Beginning with a review of attitudes to Jews in the arts and an assessment of Jewish music and musical skills, in the age of the Enlightenment, Conway traces the story of growing Jewish involvement with music through the biographies of the famous, the neglected and the forgotten, leading to a new and radical contextualisation of Wagner's infamous 'Judaism in Music'.

    Abstract: Challenging received views of music in nineteenth-century German thought, culture and society, this 2010 book provides a radical reappraisal of its socio-political meanings and functions. Garratt argues that far from governing the nineteenth-century musical discourse and practice, the concept of artistic autonomy and the aesthetic categories bequeathed by Weimar classicism were persistently challenged by alternative models of music's social role. The book investigates these competing models and the social projects that gave rise to them. It interrogates nineteenth-century musical discourse, discussing a wide range of manifestos championing musical democratization or seeking to make music an engine for the transformation of society. In addition, it explores institutions and movements that attempted to realize these goals, and compositions - by Mendelssohn, Lortzing and Liszt as well as Wagner - in which the relation between aesthetic and social claims is programmatic

As part of an EU-funded project this volume deals with the musical activities of minorities and their impact on musical traditions in Europe. Answers to those and similar questions as well as a review on what can be observed in the 21st century Europe are gathered in various thematic approaches.     Abstract: The world's largest and longest-running song competition, the Eurovision Song Contest is a significant and extremely popular media event throughout the continent and abroad. The Contest is broadcast live in over 30 countries with over 100 million viewers annually. Established in 1956 as a televised spectacle to unify postwar Western Europe through music, the Contest features singers who represent a participating nation with a new popular song. Viewers vote by phone for their favourite performance, though they cannot vote for their own country's entry. This process alone reveals much about national identities and identifications, as voting patterns expose deep-seated alliances and animosities among participating countries. Here, an international group of scholars from a variety of disciplines, including musicology, communications, history, sociology, English and German studies, explore how the contest sheds light on issues of European politics, national and European identity, race, gender and sexuality, and the aesthetics of camp. For some countries, participation in Eurovision has been simultaneously an assertion of modernity and a claim to membership in Europe and the West. Eurovision is sometimes regarded as a low-brow camp spectacle of little aesthetic or intellectual value. The essays in this collection often contradict this assumption, demonstrating that the contest has actually been a significant force and forecaster for social, cultural and political transformations in postwar Europe.

Der Band sucht »Nine-Eleven« und das Pop-Territorium in Beziehung zu setzen, kontroverse Positionen auszuloten und Neu- bzw.
