Kurzfassung: Web OYA-bunko is a bibliographic database of Japanese journal articles. It consists of about 3.700.000 entries taken from more than 1400 journal titles since the publication year 1988. About 400 journal titles are currently still running publications. An additional 1.000.000 entries from before 1988 are searchable through the "mokuroku kensaku" (目録検索). Although the database also contains articles from the Meiji period (1868-1912) the focus is on contemporary data. For detailed information about the journals incorporated in the database please see the homepage of the provider. The database offers a simple and an advanced search. In addition a very detailed classification makes a precise topical search possible. Web OYA-bunko is based on the collection of periodicals owned by the critic and journalist Ôya Sôichi (1900-1970). His personal library was turned into a public library after his death. Originally a bibliographical index published as book and later as CD-ROM were used to catalogue the articles. The online follow up of the index is Web OYA-bunko.

Kurzfassung: Interventions that are easily available, attractive and feasible help to broaden the effect public mental health interventions can have on depression. In this thesis, a specific subset of Mindfulness-based Interventions (MBIs) as public mental health interventions for people with mild to moderate depressive symptoms is studied, namely a community-based Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and a web-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention. Our first goal was to study whether MBCT, originally developed to prevent the relapse of people diagnosed with recurrent depression, could be effective as a public mental health intervention for people who have depressive symptoms. The adaptation was, in large part, a reduction in mindfulness meditation exercises, from 45 minutes to 15 minutes a day. The study showed that the community-based MBCT was effective for people with depressive symptoms. Our second goal was to study whether web-based or online public mental health interventions based on mindfulness were effective. Although current public mental health interventions have been demonstrated to be effective, they seem to have low impact due to the stigma and a mismatch in acceptability to users. Ensuring availability of interventions on the Internet can enhance the impact of public mental health interventions and improve the quality of health care. In our meta-analysis, online MBIs as public mental health interventions showed a beneficial impact on mental health outcomes, suggesting that online MBIs have the potential to contribute to promoting mental health. Our third goal was to broaden the availability of online MBIs in a (cost-)effective way by developing a web-based intervention for adults with mild to moderate depressive symptoms. We developed the web-based intervention Living to the Full", based on ACT and mindfulness, using persuasive technologies to increase adherence. The web-based intervention proved to be superior over time in effectiveness compared to both the active and the waiting list control group. Psychological flexibility and mindfulness appeared to be the central therapeutic mechanisms in the web-based intervention, confirming theoretical framework of ACT. Furthermore, we found that, at least for the target group, there seems to be no reason to exclude people from web-based ACT."

Kurzfassung: Every year, about 500 disasters do occur causing a death of about 75,000 people and affecting some 200 million people. The relevance of humanitarian organizations thus is unquestionable. By their very nature and as part of their mission, they play a significant role in rescuing people in such situations. In recent years, humanitarians have come under immense pressure from the donors, pledging millions in aid and goods, to prove that they are meeting their objectives in an efficient and effective way. Eighty percent of humanitarian organization's operations are spent on supply chain management that targeting an improvement in the practice would be a potential and justified approach to overcome the pressure. Supply chain challenges faced therefore worsen humanitarian operations creating a lot of uncertainty among humanitarian organizations. This study, therefore, conducted to assess the challenges of humanitarian supply chain management in Ethiopia. Specifically, the study had aimed at assessing the supply chain management practices of humanitarian organizations, identifying supply chain challenges facing humanitarian organization in emergencies and identifying supply chain practices that can be adopted to overcome the challenges and evaluate the effectiveness of national disaster risk management commission response rate in terms of timeliness, suitability and adequacy of relief quantities. The data was collected from experts who involved in early warning, supply chain logistic and warehouse professionals, Oromiya region, East shewa zonal and Adama district experts, and Adama woreda relief beneficiaries.

Kurzfassung: During the 1980's and 90's, cancer treatment became increasingly multidisciplinary. Adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy transferred cancer treatment from a monodisciplinary responsibility to that of multiple medical disciplines. To improve the quality of multidisciplinary care, eight regional Comprehensive Cancer Organizations were established. They formed networks of healthcare professionals and cancer institutes aiming to improve cancer care through registry, research, guideline development, knowledge exchange and organizational improvement without having a treatment function themselves. In 2011, they fused into the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organization (IKNL). Anticipating the increasing multidisciplinary character of cancer treatment, the Comprehensive Cancer Organization in the North of the Netherlands introduced an external peer review programme in 1994 to review the multidisciplinary organization of cancer care in hospitals. It gradually spread over the country and was eventually used nationwide. The majority of Dutch hospitals has gone through the procedure at least once and in some regions already thrice. The programme initially focussed on organizational requirements for multidisciplinary care. Over time, it evolved and also paid attention to important (inter)national trends such as centralization, but the primary focus remained on the organization of cancer care as a whole (not specific tumour types). Even though there is almost 20 years of experience with the external peer review programme for multidisciplinary cancer care there is no structured evidence of its effectiveness on quality improvement. This is a more general problem for external peer review and accreditation programmes worldwide and the lack of conclusive evidence has led to many calls for research in this field. The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the impact of the external peer review programme for multidisciplinary cancer care on clinical outcomes and organization. Four main research questions structured the research in this dissertation: (1) How can the impact of external peer review on quality of care be studied methodologically? (2) What is the impact of the programme on clinical quality of cancer care? (3) What are the experiences of stakeholders and what is the perceived value of the programme? (4) What drives quality related organizational change in cancer care?

Kurzfassung: The practice of karo kari allows family, especially fathers, brothers and sons, to take the lives of their daughters, sisters and mothers if they are accused of adultery. This volume examines the central position of karo kari in the social, political and juridical structures in Upper Sindh, Pakistan. Drawing connections between local contests over marriage and resources, Nafisa Shah unearths deep historical processes and power relations. In particular, she explores how the state justice system and informal mediations inform each other in state responses to karo kari, and how modern law is implicated in this seemingly ancient cultural practice

Kurzfassung: Every year, countless young adults from affluent, Western nations travel to Brazil to train in capoeira, the dance/martial art form that is one of the most visible strands of the Afro-Brazilian cultural tradition. In Search of Legitimacy explores why "first world" men and women leave behind their jobs, families, and friends to pursue a strenuous training regimen in a historically disparaged and marginalized practice. Using the concept of apprenticeship pilgrimage-studying with a local master at a historical point of origin-the author examines how non-Brazilian capoeiristas learn their art and claim legitimacy while navigating the complexities of wealth disparity, racial discrimination, and cultural appropriation

Kurzfassung: As US imperialism continues to dictate foreign policy, Deadly Contradictions is a compelling account of the American empire. Stephen P. Reyna argues that contemporary forms of violence exercised by American elites in the colonies, client state, and regions of interest have deferred imperial problems, but not without raising their own set of deadly contradictions. This book can be read many ways: as a polemic against geopolitics, as a classic social anthropological text, or as a seminal analysis of twenty-four US global wars during the Cold War and post-Cold War eras.

Kurzfassung: In Southeast Europe, the Balkans, and Middle East, scholars often refer to the "peaceful coexistence" of various religious and ethnic groups under the Ottoman Empire before ethnonationalist conflicts dissolved that shared space and created legacies of division. Post-Ottoman Coexistence interrogates ways of living together and asks what practices enabled centuries of cooperation and sharing, as well as how and when such sharing was disrupted. Contributors discuss both historical and contemporary practices of coexistence within the context of ethno-national conflict and its aftermath.

Kurzfassung: Humanness supposes innate and profound reflexivity. This volume approaches the concept of reflexivity on two different yet related analytical planes. Whether implicitly or explicitly, both planes of thought bear critically on reflexivity in relation to the nature of selfhood and the very idea of the autonomous individual, ethics, and humanness, science as such and social science, ontological dualism and fundamental ambiguity. On the one plane, a collection of original and innovative ethnographically based essays is offered, each of which is devoted to ways in which reflexivity plays a fundamental role in human social life and the study of it; on the other-anthropo-philosophical and developed in the volume's Preface, Introduction, and Postscript-it is argued that reflexivity distinguishes-definitively, albeit relatively-the being and becoming of the human

Kurzfassung: For centuries, Africa's Upper Guinea Coast region has been the site of regional and global interactions, with societies from different parts of the African continent and beyond engaging in economic trade, cultural exchange, and various forms of conflict. This book provides a wide-ranging look at how such encounters have continued into the present day, identifying the disruptions and continuities in religion, language, economics, and various other social phenomena that have resulted. These accounts show a region that, while still grappling with the legacies of colonialism and the slave trade, is both shaped by and an important actor within ever-denser global networks, exhibiting consistent transformation and creative adaptation

Kurzfassung: Focusing on the lived experience of immigration policy and processes, this volume provides fascinating insights into the deportation process as it is felt and understood by those subjected to it. The author presents a rich and innovative ethnography of deportation and deportability experienced by migrants convicted of criminal offenses in England and Wales. The unique perspectives developed here – on due process in immigration appeals, migrant surveillance and control, social relations and sense of self, and compliance and resistance – are important for broader understandings of border control policy and human rights

Kurzfassung: This ground-breaking ethnography of an export-orientated garment assembly factory in Egypt examines the dynamic relationships between its managers – emergent Mubarak-bizniz (business) elites who are caught in an intensely competitive globalized supply chain – and the local daily-life realities of their young, educated, and mixed-gender labour force. Constructions of power and resistance, as well as individual aspirations and identities, are explored through articulations of class, gender and religion in both management discourses and shop floor practices. Leila Chakravarti's compelling study also moves beyond the confines of the factory, examining the interplay with the wider world around it

Kurzfassung: The Poplars housing development in suburban Paris is home to what one resident called the "Little-Middles" – a social group on the tenuous border between the working- and middle- classes. In the 1960s The Poplars was a site of upward social mobility, which fostered an egalitarian sense of community among residents. This feeling of collective flourishing was challenged when some residents moved away, selling their homes to a new generation of upwardly mobile neighbors from predominantly immigrant backgrounds. This volume explores the strained reception of these migrants, arguing that this is less a product of racism and xenophobia than of anxiety about social class and the loss of a sense of community that reigned before

Kurzfassung: Public universities are in crisis, waning in their role as central institutions within democratic societies. Denunciations are abundant, but analyses of the causes and proposals to re-create public universities are not. Based on extensive experience with Action Research-based organizational change in universities and private sector organizations, Levin and Greenwood analyze the wreckage created by neoliberal academic administrators and policymakers. The authors argue that public universities must be democratically organized to perform their educational and societal functions. The book closes by laying out Action Research processes that can transform public universities back into institutions that promote academic freedom, integrity, and democracy

Kurzfassung: Despite the three decades that have passed since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the historical narrative of East Germany is hardly fixed in public memory, as German society continues to grapple with the legacies of the Cold War. This fascinating ethnography looks at two very different types of local institutions in one eastern German state that take divergent approaches to those legacies: while publicly funded organizations reliably cast the GDR as a dictatorship, a main regional newspaper offers a more ambivalent perspective colored by the experiences and concerns of its readers. As author Anselma Gallinat shows, such memory work-initially undertaken after fundamental regime change-inevitably shapes citizenship and democracy in the present

Kurzfassung: Contemporary Dutch policy and legislation facilitate the use of high quality, accessible and affordable assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) to all citizens in need of them, while at the same time setting some strict boundaries on their use in daily clinical practices. Through the ethnographic study of a single clinic in this national context, Patient-Centred IVF examines how this particular form of medicine, aiming to empower its patients, co-shapes the experiences, views and decisions of those using these technologies. Gerrits contends that to understand the use of reproductive technologies in practice and the complexity of processes of medicalization, we need to go beyond 'easy assumptions' about the hegemony of biomedicine and the expected impact of patient-centredness

Kurzfassung: Nowhere have recent environmental and social changes been more pronounced than in post-Soviet Siberia. Donatas Brandišauskas probes the strategies that Orochen reindeer herders of southeastern Siberia have developed to navigate these changes. "Catching luck" is one such strategy that plays a central role in Orochen cosmology -- luck implies a vernacular theory of causality based on active interactions of humans, non-humans, material objects, and places. Brandišauskas describes in rich details the skills, knowledge, ritual practices, storytelling, and movements that enable the Orochen to "catch luck" (or not, sometimes), to navigate times of change and upheaval

Kurzfassung: In Europe a number of production and communication strategies have long tried to establish local products as resources for local development. At the foot of the Alps, this scenario appears in all its contradictions, especially in relation to cheese production. The Heritage Arena focuses on the saga of Strachitunt, a cheese that has been designated an EU Protected Designation of Origin after years of negotiation and competition involving cheese-makers, merchants, and Slow Food activists. The book explores how the reinvention of cheese as a form of heritage is an ongoing and dynamic process rife with conflict and drama

Kurzfassung: Scholars from various disciplines have used key concepts to grasp mobilities, but as of yet, a working vocabulary of these has not been fully developed. Given this context and inspired in part by Raymond Williams' Keywords (1976), this edited volume presents contributions that critically analyze mobility-related keywords: capital, cosmopolitanism, freedom, gender, immobility, infrastructure, motility, and regime. Each chapter provides an historical context, a critical analysis of how the keyword has been used in relation to mobility, and a conclusion that proposes future usage or research

Kurzfassung: Moving Places draws together contributions from Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa, exploring practices and experiences of movement, non-movement, and place-making. The book centers on "moving places": places with locations that are not fixed but relative. Locations appearing to be reasonably stable, such as home and homeland, are in fact always subject to practices, imaginaries, and politics of movement. Bringing together original ethnographic contributions with a clear theoretical focus, this volume spans the fields of anthropology, human geography, migration, and border studies, and serves as teaching material in related programs

Kurzfassung: Devil worship, black magic, and witchcraft have long captivated anthropologists as well as the general public. In this volume, Jean La Fontaine explores the intersection of expert and lay understandings of evil and the cultural forms that evil assumes. The chapters touch on public scares about devil-worship, misconceptions about human sacrifice and the use of body parts in healing practices, and mistaken accusations of children practicing witchcraft. Together, these cases demonstrate that comparison is a powerful method of cultural understanding, but warns of the dangers and mistaken conclusions that untrained ideas about other ways of life can lead to

Exploring creative practices in various settings, the book does not only call attention to the spread of modernist discourses of creativity, from the colonial era to the current obsession with 'innovation' in neo-liberal capitalist cultural politics, but also to the less visible practices of copying, recycling and reproduction that occur as part and parcel of creative improvization

Kurzfassung: Based on seventeen months of ethnographic research among Indonesian eldercare workers in Japan and Indonesia, this book is the first ethnography to research Indonesian care workers' relationships with the cared-for elderly, their Japanese colleagues, and their employers. Through the notion of intimacy, the book brings together sociological and anthropological scholarship on the body, migration, demographic change, and eldercare in a vivid account of societal transformation. Placed against the background of mass media representations, the Indonesian workers' experiences serve as a basis for discussion of the role of bodily experience in shaping the image of a national "other" in Japan

Kurzfassung: In Scandinavia, there is separation in the electorate between those who embrace diversity and those who wish for tighter bonds between people and nation. This book focuses on three nationalist populist parties in Scandinavia-the Sweden Democrats, the Progress Party in Norway, and the Danish People's Party. In order to affect domestic politics by addressing this conflict of diversity versus homogeneity, these parties must enter the national parliament while earning the nation's trust. Of the three, the Sweden Democrats have yet to earn the trust of the mainstream, leading to polarized and emotionally driven public debate that raises the question of national identity and what is understood as the common man

Kurzfassung: The first book to address the classic anthropological theme of property through the ethnography of Amazonia, Ownership and Nurture sets new and challenging terms for anthropological debates about the region and about property in general. Property and ownership have special significance and carry specific meanings in Amazonia, which has been portrayed as the antithesis of Western, property-based, civilization. Through carefully constructed studies of land ownership, slavery, shamanism, spirit mastery, aesthetics, and intellectual property, this volume demonstrates that property relations are of central importance in Amazonia, and that the ownership of persons plays an especially significant role in native cosmology

Kurzfassung: Violent Becomings conceptualizes the Mozambican state not as the bureaucratically ordered polity of the nation-state, but as a continuously emergent and violently challenged mode of ordering. In doing so, this book addresses the question of why colonial and postcolonial state formation has involved violent articulations with so-called 'traditional' forms of sociality. The scope and dynamic nature of such violent becomings is explored through an array of contexts that include colonial regimes of forced labor and pacification, liberation war struggles and civil war, the social engineering of the post-independence state, and the popular appropriation of sovereign violence in riots and lynchings

Kurzfassung: The socio-economic transformations of the 1990s have forced many people in Poland into impoverishment. Hunters, Gatherers, and Practitioners of Powerlessness gives a dramatic account of life after this degradation, tracking the experiences of unemployed miners, scrap collectors, and poverty-stricken village residents. Contrary to the images of passivity, resignation, and helplessness that have become powerful tropes in Polish journalism and academic writing, Tomasz Rakowski traces the ways in which people actively reconfigure their lives. As it turns out, the initial sense of degradation and helplessness often gives way to images of resourcefulness that reveal unusual hunting-and-gathering skills

Kurzfassung: In Southeast Europe, the Balkans, and Middle East, scholars often refer to the “peaceful coexistence” of various religious and ethnic groups under the Ottoman Empire before ethnonationalist conflicts dissolved that shared space and created legacies of division. "Post-Ottoman Coexistence", interrogates ways of living together and asks what practices enabled centuries of cooperation and sharing, as well as how and when such sharing was disrupted. Contributors discuss both historical and contemporary practices of coexistence within the context of ethno-national conflict and its aftermath. This title was made Open Access by libraries from around the world through Knowledge Unlatched

Kurzfassung: Across the world, more and more DIY initiatives are cropping up, in which a diversity of matters and problems are being collectively dealt with. In these collaborative contexts – located away from the market and the state - an understanding of living together and urbanity based around democracy is tested out, and at the same time, ecologically and socially responsible solutions are being sought for fundamental forms of provision of food, of energy, and for making all manner of technology accessible. In the process, fascinating new forms of collective production, repairing and swapping arise which challenge the industrial logic of the 20th century, even turn them on their head. This book is dedicated to the visionary power of these promising innovative practices, and at the same time, provides a societal categorisation of the new `laboratories' of societal transformation. With photographs by Falk Messerschmidt.

Kurzfassung: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Drawing on the latest debates in ecocritical theory and sustainability studies, Literature as Cultural Ecology: Sustainable Texts outlines a new approach to the reading of literary texts. Hubert Zapf considers the ways in which literature operates as a form of cultural ecology, using language, imagination and critique to challenge and transform cultural narratives of humanity's relationship to nature. In this way, the book demonstrates the important role that literature plays in creating a more sustainable way of life. Applying this approach to works by writers such as Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, Zakes Mda, and Amitav Ghosh, Literature as Cultural Ecology is an essential contribution to the contemporary environmental humanities

Kurzfassung: This book represents an important voice in the scientific discourse on what constitutes a sustainable information society, and provides a new comprehensive and forward-looking approach to such a development. This approach is based on the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by the main stakeholders of society, including individuals, enterprises, and public administration, who should use ICTs in order to build the welfare of present and future generations, ensure economic growth and socio-cultural development, increase participation in public life, permit personal devel

Kurzfassung: Sponsored by the Communication, Information Technologies, and Media Sociology section of the American Sociological Association (CITAMS), this volume assembles relevant research focusing on ICTs in Latin America and the Caribbean, two understudied areas of global importance. Regarding Latin America, the mobile broadband revolution is taking place and the spread of mobile telephony and broadband Internet is beginning to reach more economically diverse populations. Concerning the Caribbean, this region reflects perhaps the greatest cultural, geographical and linguistic diversity in the Western hemisphere. Because of historical links with Africa, Europe and other metropoles and the region's proximity to the United States and Latin America, the Caribbean offers a unique angle from which to examine the growth of ICTs. The volume features international editorial teams with leading scholars from the Caribbean, Latin America, and North America. Bringing these voices together, the volume sheds light on how existing policies are meeting challenges to digital inclusion, as well as the benefits of connectivity within these societal contexts

Kurzfassung: At a time when thousands of refugees risk their lives undertaking perilous journeys by boat across the Mediterranean, this multidisciplinary volume could not be more pertinent. It offers various contemporary case studies of boat migrations undertaken by asylum seekers and refugees around the globe and shows that boats not only move people and cultural capital between places, but also fuel cultural fantasies, dreams of adventure and hope, along with fears of invasion and terrorism. The ambiguous nature of memories, media representations and popular culture productions are highlighted throughout in order to address negative stereotypes and conversely, humanize the individuals involved

Kurzfassung: Questions regarding the origins, mobility, and effects of analytical concepts continue to emerge as anthropology endeavors to describe similarities and differences in social life around the world. Cutting and Connecting rethinks this comparative enterprise by calling in a conceptual debt that theoretical innovations from Melanesian anthropology owe to network analysis originally developed in African contexts. On this basis, the contributors adopt and employ concepts from recent studies of Melanesia to analyze contemporary life on the African continent and to explore how this exchange influences the borrowed anthropological perspectives. By focusing on ways in which networks are cut and connections are made, these empirical investigations show how particular relationships are created in today's Africa. In addition, the volume aims for an approach that recasts relationships between theory and place and concepts and ethnography, in a manner that destabilizes the distinction between fieldwork and writing

Kurzfassung: The "extensive wilderness" of Zambia's central Luangwa Valley is the homeland of the Valley Bisa whose cultural practices have enriched this environment for centuries. Beginning with the intrusions of warlords and later British colonials, successive generations have experienced the callousness and challenges of colonialism. Their homeland, a slender corridor surrounded by three national parks and an escarpment, is a microcosm of the political, economic and cultural battlefields surrounding most African protected areas today. The story of the Valley Bisa diverges from the myths that conservationists, administrators, and philanthropists, tell about Africa's environmental and wildlife crises

Kurzfassung: Despite economic growth in Kazakhstan, more than 80 per cent of Kazakhstan's ethnic Germans have emigrated to Germany to date. Disappointing experiences of the migrants, along with other aspects of life in Germany, have been transmitted through transnational networks to ethnic Germans still living in Kazakhstan. Consequently, Germans in Kazakhstan today feel more alienated than ever from their 'historic homeland'. This book explores the interplay of those memories, social networks and state policies, which play a role in the 'construction' of a Kazakhstani German identity
