    Abstract: Wenigen anderen Ethnologen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland war es vergönnt, so wie Rüdiger Schott durch eigene Aktivitäten als individuelle Forscherpersönlichkeit maßgebend zum Aufbau und Ausbau ihrer Disziplin beizutragen. Dieser Umstand verdankt sich einerseits den von ihm seit den 60er Jahren durchgeführten Feldforschungen bei den Bulsa in Nordghana und den in den 80er Jahren angestellten ethnographischen Erhebungen bei den Lyela in Burkina Faso (vormals: Obervolta), die ihm internationale Reputation und hohe wissenschaftliche Anerkennung eingetragen haben, andererseits der permanenten Umsetzung der erreichten Forschungsergebnisse in die akademische Lehre und in weitere Forschungen, die heute als beispielhaft gelten.
    Abstract: Nicht von ungefähr gehört das Seminar für Völkerkunde der Universität Münster, das von Rüdiger Schott begründet wurde und im April 1990 auf sein 25jähriges Bestehen zurückblicken konnte, gegenwärtig zu den auch im Ausland wohlbekannten deutschen Forschungsstätten seines Fachgebiets. Dies ist nicht zuletzt deswegen der Fall, weil Schott von Anbeginn seine ethnologischen Forschungen in ständigem Austausch mit einer Reihe benachbarter Disziplinen, insbesondere mit den sozialen Handlungswissenschaften betrieben hat, wie beispielsweise mit den Wirtschaftswissenschaften und der Soziologie, der Rechtswissenschaft und den Religionswissenschaften.
    Abstract: Seine Befähigung und bis auf den heutigen Tag praktizierte Bereitschaft zur Kooperation mit diesen Nachbardisziplinen basiert auf der Einsicht, daß die Ethnologie ihre eigene Identität nur gewinnen und fortentwickeln kann, wenn sie sich auch auf der Ebene der Ausbildung ihrer analytischen Denkansätze und Grundbegriffe hierfür hinreichend kontaktfähig hält. Was Person, Leben und Werk von Rüdiger Schott angeht, so sind die äußeren Rahmendaten seines bisherigen Forscher- und Universitätslebens rasch berichtet. Jedoch wird eine auf die Forschungsinhalte und die erzielten Ergebnisse gerichtete Analyse den von ihm vorgelegten Resultaten kaum gerecht, wenn sie sich nur auf deren Relevanz für die Ethnologie als solche beschränken wollte.

    Abstract: Ruinierte Grundbesitzer, hungernde Steuerbeamte, arbeitende Frauen und kriminelle Tagelöhner am Existenzminimum. Tausende Einzelbiografien adliger Personen und Familien zeugen von einer Lebenswirklichkeit jenseits weitläufigen Großgrundbesitzes, prächtiger Schlösser und erfolgreicher Offizierskarrieren. Wie diese Untersuchung erstmals systematisch anhand neu gesichteter Quellen nachweist, war Armut im Adel Preußens um 1800 weit verbreitet und strukturell bedingt. Sie nahm seit dem ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert deutlich zu, wanderte vermehrt vom Land in die Städte und veränderte mit der Herausbildung eines versorgungsabhängigen Dienstadels ihre Ausdrucksformen. Die schleichende Transformation der Lebensgrundlagen des Adels bedrohte nicht nur seine innere Kohäsion, sondern stellte den Führungsanspruch des gesamten Standes in Frage und zeitigte damit weitreichende Folgen für die deutsche Politik und Gesellschaft auf ihrem Weg in die Moderne. / »Poor Nobility in Prussia, 1770–1830« -- Destitute landowners, starving officers, working women – considering neglected sources, this study is the first to center the experience of impoverished nobility in Prussia. Nobles lost their estates, ended up in towns, and were forced to assume low-paid positions.     Abstract: Die Demokratie Nachkriegsdeutschlands ist gemeinhin untersucht worden, als hätte sie sich wie ein Phönix als Zivilgesellschaft aus der Asche des Zusammenbruchs des Nationalsozialismus erhoben. Aber die Geschichte war ganz anders. Man muß die Demokratisierung Deutschlands durch die amerikanische Besatzungsherrschaft anhand der originalen Dokumente nachzeichnen, um zu zeigen, welch spannende Dinge sich tatsächlich in der Stunde Null, dem (nicht nur) metaphorischen Wendepunkt der deutschen Geschichte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, ereignet haben. Uta Gerhardt befaßt sich anhand der konkreten Vorgaben, die damals die Politik bestimmten, mit den Programmperspektiven der amerikanischen Besatzungsherrschaft. Trotz seines zeitgeschichtlichen Stoffs handelt es sich aber um ein am Denken Max Webers geschultes soziologisches Buch, in dessen Zentrum die Frage steht, wie es mittels einer Herrschaft des Übergangs binnen kurzer Zeit gelingen kann, eine von Diktatur geprägte Gesellschaft in eine demokratische zu transformieren - eine Frage, die heute mehr denn je aktuell ist.

Solche gesellschaftlichen Unterscheidungen werden jedoch niemals isoliert wirksam. Soziale Kategorien wie Geschlecht, Ethnizität, sozialer Status oder das Alter einer Person sind ineinander verschränkt bzw. überkreuzen sich – und können daher auch gar nicht ohne ihre Wechselwirkungen untersucht werden. Diese Perspektive, die als »Intersektionsanalyse« inzwischen als sozialwissenschaftliches Paradigma gilt, wird in dem Band erstmals in vergleichender Perspektive auf die Frühe Neuzeit übertragen. Dem Programm einer »Historischen Intersektionsanalyse« folgend, fragen die dabei versammelten Fallstudien sowohl nach der Epochenspezifik sozialer Ungleichheiten als auch nach dem Wandel von Kategorien und deren Verschränkung. / »Entangled Differences« -- Social categories such as gender, ethnicity, status, and age do not exist in isolation, but rather are always interconnected. To analyze these categories and the relationships between them the concept of intersectionality has been developed in the social sciences. The present volume seeks to apply this approach to Early Modern history. From a comparative perspective the case studies collected here examine historically specific inequalities as well as changes within categories and their intersections.

To analyze these categories and the relationships between them the concept of intersectionality has been developed in the social sciences. The present volume seeks to apply this approach to Early Modern history. From a comparative perspective the case studies collected here examine historically specific inequalities as well as changes within categories and their intersections.

    Abstract: "The demise of the Soviet Union in 1991 resulted in new state-led nation-building projects in Central Asia. The emergence of independent republics spawned a renewed Western scholarly interest in the region's nationality issues. Presenting a detailed study, this book examines the state-led nation-building projects in the Soviet republics of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Exploring the degree, forms and ways of the Soviet state involvement in creating Kazakh and Uzbek nations, this book places the discussion within the theoretical literature on nationalism. The author argues that both Kazakh and Uzbek nations are artificial constructs of Moscow-based Soviet policy-makers of the 1920s and 1930s. This book challenges existing arguments in current scholarship by bringing some new and alternative insights into the role of indigenous Central Asian and Soviet officials in these nation-building projects. It goes on to critically examine post-Soviet official Kazakh and Uzbek historiographies, according to which Kazakh and Uzbek peoples had developed national collective identities and loyalties long before the Soviet era.     Abstract: "The right of indigenous peoples to Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in relation to natural resource extraction in their territories is a principle that is increasingly recognised by intergovernmental organizations, international bodies, conventions and international human rights law as well as in the domestic law of some States. This book offers a comprehensive overview of the status of Free Prior and Informed Consent under international human rights law, considering the main controversies, obstacles and challenges associated with its recognition and implementation. The book examines the relationship between Free Prior and Informed Consent and territorial, resource and governance rights. The historical basis for FPIC is considered as well as the legitimacy of the dominant doctrines of exclusive State ownership of subsoil resources. The book argues that FPIC constitutes an emerging norm of international law with a tipping point having been reached in terms of the requirements recognition, both within and beyond the human rights regime. It draws on emerging jurisprudence from around the world, as well as evolving industry standards and policies, to illustrate the growing recognition of the fact that respect for the consent requirement is fundamental to securing indigenous peoples self-governance and territorial rights"--

    Abstract: "China's transformation from a poor and underdeveloped country into a global market power has profoundly altered its socioeconomic power relations with the other countries in the Greater China region, namely, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Indeed, this economic shift has resulted in the massive flow of capital and people from Taiwan as well as Hong Kong to China, to seek business opportunities and new lifestyles. These flows have in turn completely transformed longstanding borderlines in the region. This book examines the transformation of Taiwan and Hong Kong's socioeconomic relationships with China as their economies have become more deeply integrated into Greater China. Across three key sections, it explores the impact of increasing social interaction and the shrinking of existing borderlines to ask whether these changes will bring about a convergence of identity among the people involved. 'Production', examines how investments from Taiwan and Hong Kong to China have transformed production networks; 'community and daily life' explores the impact of cross boundary mobility and the integration of migrants into Chinese communities; and finally, 'identity formation' engages with what is one of the most important issues in contemporary Taiwanese society.     Abstract: "When Chinese women bound their daughters' feet, many consequences ensued, some beyond the imagination of the binders and the bound. The most obvious of these consequences was to impress upon a small child's body and mind that girls differed from boys, thus reproducing gender hierarchy. What is not obvious is why Chinese society should have evolved such a radical method of gender-marking. Gendering is not simply preparation for reproduction, rather its primary significance lies in preparing children for their places in the division of labor of a particular political economy. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and interviews with almost 5,000 women, this book examines footbinding as Sichuan women remember it from the final years of the empire and the troubled times before the 1949 revolution. It focuses on two key questions: what motivated parents to maintain this custom, and how significant was girls' work in China's final pre-industrial century?     Abstract: "When Chinese women bound their daughters' feet, many consequences ensued, some beyond the imagination of the binders and the bound. The most obvious of these consequences was to impress upon a small child's body and mind that girls differed from boys, thus reproducing gender hierarchy. What is not obvious is why Chinese society should have evolved such a radical method of gender-marking. Gendering is not simply preparation for reproduction, rather its primary significance lies in preparing children for their places in the division of labor of a particular political economy.     Abstract: "This highly original work demonstrates the role and importance of customary law as the primary source of law for indigenous peoples all over the world. The book reviews the relationship between customary, positive and natural law from the time of Plato up to the present day. It examines its recognition in constitutional law and in international human rights and environmental instruments. The author analyses the role of customary law in tribal, national and international governance of indigenous peoples' lands, resources and cultural heritage. He explores the challenges and opportunities for its recognition by courts and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, including issues of proof of law and conflicts between customary practices and human rights. It concludes that indigenous peoples' rights to their customary legal regimes and states' obligations to respect and recognise customary law, in order to secure their human rights, are principles of international customary law, and as such binding on all states. At a time when the land and resources of indigenous peoples are increasingly under threat, the book provides an accessible overview of the key issues for both legal and non-legal scholars, students of human rights and environmental justice, and indigenous peoples themselves"--
