    Abstract: In The Black Republic, Brandon R. Byrd explores the ambivalent attitudes that African American leaders in the post-Civil War era held toward Haiti, the first and only black republic in the Western Hemisphere. Following emancipation, African American leaders of all kinds-politicians, journalists, ministers, writers, educators, artists, and diplomats-identified new and urgent connections with Haiti, a nation long understood as an example of black self-determination. They celebrated not only its diplomatic recognition by the United States but also the renewed relevance of the Haitian Revolution.While a number of African American leaders defended the sovereignty of a black republic whose fate they saw as intertwined with their own, others expressed concern over Haiti's fitness as a model black republic, scrutinizing whether the nation truly reflected the "civilized" progress of the black race. Influenced by the imperialist rhetoric of their day, many African Americans across the political spectrum espoused a politics of racial uplift, taking responsibility for the "improvement" of Haitian education, politics, culture, and society. They considered Haiti an uncertain experiment in black self-governance: it might succeed and vindicate the capabilities of African Americans demanding their own right to self-determination or it might fail and condemn the black diasporic population to second-class status for the foreseeable future.When the United States military occupied Haiti in 1915, it created a crisis for W. E. B. Du Bois and other black activists and intellectuals who had long grappled with the meaning of Haitian independence. The resulting demand for and idea of a liberated Haiti became a cornerstone of the anticapitalist, anticolonial, and antiracist radical black internationalism that flourished between World War I and World War II.     Abstract: La question des rapports entre les sexes et de la définition des rôles sexués est assez familière aux spécialistes de l'Antiquité. Néanmoins le renouvellement théorique apporté par la notion de genre incite l'équipe Phéacie, qui réunit des chercheurs et des enseignants-chercheurs spécialistes de l'Antiquité grecque et romaine, à proposer un premier bilan des problèmes que leur pose l'usage de cette catégorie. La variété des sources étudiées, épigraphiques, papyrologiques, archéologiques, littéraires, témoigne de l'ampleur que peut prendre un tel questionnement historique susceptible de renouveler radicalement la lecture de tel ou tel document supposé bien connu. Par ailleurs, les cadres normatifs observables dans les sociétés antiques, une fois mis au jour, paraissent sujets à bien des gauchissements, voire des transgressions. Ceux-ci rendent compte, à leur tour, de la dynamique des identités de genre qu'on ne saurait réduire à deux contenus, le masculin et le féminin. Néanmoins cette polarité reste un ordonnancement politiquement utile, permettant de hiérarchiser les individus et les comportements, et, exceptionnellement, de valoriser des caractéristiques socialement associées à un sexe ou un autre, tels l'obéissance pour les filles de leurs pères et le courage physique pour les fils de la cité.

Sous des attributs prestigieux, durablement définis et reconnus, un incessant mouvement de renouvellement se déroule. L'anoblissement qui fait d'un homme noble, selon l'article du dictionnaire de l'Académie française en 1694, est le principe même qui entretient un corps dont la place est éminente dans la hiérarchie sociale. Il était intéressant d'étudier ce processus à travers les traités théoriques et à travers des ensembles régionaux ou simplement des cas familiaux.

    Abstract: Les funérailles sont à la fin du Moyen Âge l'une des grandes cérémonies mettant en scène le pouvoir souverain. A l'image du Christ, qui triomphe de la mort par la résurrection, le prince défunt, plus humblement, triomphe de l'oubli par un faste funèbre impressionnant qui marque durablement les mémoires. La présente étude entreprend de le suivre depuis son décès jusqu'à sa dernière demeure, à travers des cérémonies religieuses, chevaleresques et politiques complexes, qui offrent de nombreuses similitudes avec le rituel royal. De multiples questions, objets de débats historiographiques, sont envisagées, comme la signification de l'effigie, simple ou double corps du prince, la place des funérailles dans les cérémonies d'inauguration ou l'intérêt porté au cœur du défunt. En restituant le prince dans sa majesté, les funérailles sont non seulement un rituel essentiel pour comprendre la spiritualité et les mentalités médiévales, mais également l'indice d'une histoire politique subtile, à l'ombre du trône royal.

    Abstract: Deutsch-Ostafrika blieb als eine der jüngsten und größten Kolonien des deutschen Kaiserreichs bis zu seiner Auflösung in Folge des Versailler Vertrags ein begrenzt erschlossenes und durchherrschtes Gebiet. Die europäische Präsenz konzentrierte sich auf vereinzelte Siedlungsinseln an der Küste und im Landesinneren. An diesen Orten trafen die Kolonisatoren auf indigene und zugewanderte Bevölkerungsgruppen mit unterschiedlicher soziokultureller Prägung. Der Band erforscht die dabei induzierten Kulturkontakte, die in der Regel von asymmetrischen Machtverhältnissen, Zwang und Gewalt geprägt waren, in der zunehmend hybriden Lebenswelt des kolonialen Raums aber auch neue Erfahrungshorizonte eröffneten, die bestehende Grenzziehungen auf den Prüfstand stellten.

Martino places borderlands women in a broad context of empire, cultural exchange, violence, and nation building, demonstrating how women's war making was embedded in national and imperial strategies of expansion and resistance.

    Abstract: Although "entanglement" has become a keyword in recent German history scholarship, entangled studies of the postwar era have largely limited their scope to politics and economics across the two Germanys while giving short shrift to social and cultural phenomena like gender. At the same time, historians of gender in Germany have tended to treat East and West Germany in isolation, with little attention paid to intersections and interrelationships between the two countries. This groundbreaking collection synthesizes the perspectives of entangled history and gender studies, bringing together established as well as upcoming scholars to investigate the ways in which East and West German gender relations were culturally, socially, and politically intertwined.

    Abstract: Auch wenn sich die Überlegungen und Vorschläge vorrangig auf die österreichischen Bildungslandschaft beziehen, so lassen sie sich ohne Anstrengung und ohne Abstriche auch auf die deutschen Bildungsinstitutionen und auf die deutsche Integrationsdebatte eröffnen, gibt es doch auch hier ähnliche bildungspolitische Vorbehalte.     Abstract: Der Tagungsband setzt an zwei Desiderata an: Zum einen mangelt es interaktionsanalytischen Studien an einer systematischen Betrachtung medialer Realisierungsbedingungen. Dies gilt insbesondere für die Erforschung von Alltagsinteraktionen, deren spezifische Medialität kaum berücksichtigt wird. Zum anderen trägt das Gros der Forschung zu Massenmedien selten der interaktiven Konstitution massenmedialer Kommunikation Rechnung. Häufig wird das mediale Produkt fokussiert, ohne dessen Einbettung in Interaktionsstrukturen (z. B. in der Produktion) zu berücksichtigen. Folge ist eine Medienforschung, die sich auf übermittelte Inhalte beschränkt, darüber aber das soziale Zustandekommen in der Produktion sowie die soziale Verarbeitung in der Rezeption vernachlässigt. Beides geschieht wesentlich über Prozesse sozialer Interaktion. Im Buch finden sich daher Beiträge, die der systematischen Veränderung von Interaktion durch Mediengebrauch nachgehen und auf der Basis bestehender Konzepte der Interaktionsforschung nach angemessenen und gegebenenfalls reformulierungsbedürftigen Beschreibungs- und Analysekonzepten fragen.

On considère souvent que l'Europe centrale, prisonnière de structures archaïques héritées de son passé magyaro-slave et entretenues par une noblesse toute-puissante, solidaire et viscéralement hostile à toute innovation, a manqué le virage de la modernité. Les quatorze contributions réunies dans ce livre démontrent chacune à leur manière l'ineptie de ce raisonnement. Elles ne se contentent pas d'identifier les ferments de renouveau qui, de Hus à Copernic, ont éclos au centre du vieux continent. Revenant sur les présupposés qui entourent les notions de « première modernité » ou de « modèle occidental », elles apportent un éclairage inédit sur les rapports centre-périphérie comme sur les liens entre idéologie, société et culture.     Abstract: In The Afterlife of Reproductive Slavery Alys Eve Weinbaum investigates the continuing resonances of Atlantic slavery in the cultures and politics of human reproduction that characterize contemporary biocapitalism. As a form of racial capitalism that relies on the commodification of the human reproductive body, biocapitalism is dependent upon what Weinbaum calls the slave episteme-the racial logic that drove four centuries of slave breeding in the Americas and Caribbean. Weinbaum outlines how the slave episteme shapes the practice of reproduction today, especially through use of biotechnology and surrogacy. Engaging with a broad set of texts, from Toni Morrison's Beloved and Octavia Butler's dystopian speculative fiction to black Marxism, histories of slavery, and legal cases involving surrogacy, Weinbaum shows how black feminist contributions from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s constitute a powerful philosophy of history-one that provides the means through which to understand how reproductive slavery haunts the present

    Abstract: This book is about the production and consumption of history, themes that have gained in importance since the discipline's attempts to disavow its own authority with the ascendancy of postmodern and postcolonial perspectives. Several parallel themes crosscut the book's central focus on the discipline of history: its intellectual history, its historiography, and its connection to memory, particularly in relation to the need to establish the collective identity of 'nation', 'community' or state through a memorialisation process that has much to do with history, or at least with claiming a historicity for collective memory. None of this can be undertaken without an understanding of the roles that history-writing and history-reading have been made to perform in public debates, or perhaps more accurately in public disputes. The book addresses a discomfort with postcolonial theories in and as history.     Abstract: Although the Japanese empire rapidly dissolved following the end of World War II, the memories, mourning, and trauma of the nation's imperial exploits continue to haunt Korea, China, and Taiwan. In 'Anti-Japan' Leo T. S. Ching traces the complex dynamics that shape persisting negative attitudes toward Japan throughout East Asia. Drawing on a mix of literature, film, testimonies, and popular culture, Ching shows how anti-Japanism stems from the failed efforts at decolonization and reconciliation, the Cold War and the ongoing U.S. military presence, and shifting geopolitical and economic conditions in the region. At the same time, pro-Japan sentiments in Taiwan reveal a Taiwanese desire to recoup that which was lost after the Japanese empire fell. Anti-Japanism, Ching contends, is less about Japan itself than it is about the real and imagined relationships between it and China, Korea, and Taiwan. Advocating for forms of healing that do not depend on state-based diplomacy, Ching suggests that reconciliation requires that Japan acknowledge and take responsibility for its imperial history

    Abstract: The transition from Qajar rule in Iran (c.1789-1925) to that of rule by the Pahlavi dynasty (1925-1979) set in motion a number of shifts in the political, social, and cultural realms. Focusing on masculinity in Iran, this book interweaves ideas and perceptions, laws, political movements, and men's practices to spotlight the role men as gendered subjects played in Iranian history. It shows how men under the reign of Reza Shah dressed, acted, spoke, and thought differently from their late Qajar period counterparts. Furthermore, it highlights how the notion of being a "proper Iranian man" changed over these decades. Demonstrating how an emerging elite of western-educated men constructed and promoted a new model of masculinity as part of their struggle for political, social, and cultural hegemony, Balslev shows how this new model reflects wider developments in Iranian society at the time including the rise of Iranian nationalism and the country's modernisation process

    Abstract: "This book focuses on those peoples of the Caucasus and Central Asia, who were making the streets of the Soviet Union's "two capitals" their own. Hundreds of thousands of Uzbeks, Tajiks, Georgians, Azerbaijanis and others arrived in the last Soviet era, seeking opportunity at the privileged heart of the USSR. Using extensive oral histories as well as published and archival sources, this book shows how their energy transformed their own and their family's life chances and created inter-republican networks, altering life in the center and periphery alike. Citizens of the Soviet Union but often lacking residence papers required for their stay; denigrated as "Blacks" by some in the local population but accepted by others for their knowledge and goods; excited by their status as residents of the capital, but torn over attachments to an ethnic identity and home: these newcomers exemplify the ambiguities of the Soviet modernization and multinational project. This book connects Leningrad and Moscow to transnational trends of core-periphery movement and marks them as global cities. It examines Soviet concepts, such as the "friendship of peoples," alongside ethnic and national difference, which became racialized. It reveals the Brezhnev era as a time of dynamism and opportunity, and Leningrad and Moscow not as isolated outposts of privilege, but at the heart of any number of systems that linked the Soviet Union. In the 1980s, the Soviet Union crumbled from the outside in, and increased migration presaged perestroika-era tensions and shortages and, eventually, the USSR's collapse. These migrants were the forbears of the million-plus Muslims from the former Soviet spaces now in Leningrad and Moscow, who have confronted rampant racism in the 2000s"--

    Abstract: Seit einiger Zeit rückt die materielle Kultur in den Fokus der wissenschaftlichen Aufmerksamkeit, denn es sind oft die belanglos erscheinenden Alltagsdinge, deren genaue Analyse Hinweise auf ihre sozialen, gesellschaftlichen und historischen Bedeutungen offenlegt. Sie werden damit allererst zu historischen Zeugnissen und gewinnen neue Aussagekraft. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge machen die Alltagskultur und ihre Bedeutungsvielfalt als »Dingausstattungen« von Gesellschaft zum Thema. Damit wird die aktuelle Debatte um einen »material turn« in den Kulturwissenschaften hier erstmals für die Zeitgeschichte erkundet. Der Band versammelt dazu Beiträge mit unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlichen Perspektiven. Er thematisiert soziale Arrangements wie die Wohnung, das Büro und die Stadt in ihrer dinglichen Dimension, betrachtet die Fotografie als materielle Quelle und untersucht biographische Dinge sowie das Kriterium der Schönheit. In einem zweiten Teil fokussiert er Alltagsobjekte mittels detaillierter Spurensuchen und erkundet abschließend die politische und soziale Dimension der musealisierten Objektkultur.

Historiker, arbeitet zu Themen der Alltagskultur und der Stadtgeschichte in der Moderne. Er war Leiter des Eisenhüttenstädter Dokumentationszentrum Alltagskultur der DDR. Derzeit ist er Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung Potsdam.

Aus der Vielzahl an Ratschlägen, Hinweisen, Warnungen, Empfehlungen und Aufforderungen werden die vielfältigen Diskussionen rekonstruiert, die immer wieder um die Frage nach einem adäquaten Umgang mit antisemitischen Erfahrungen in Deutschland kreisten. So ermöglicht die Studie eine differenzierte Betrachtung der vereinsinternen Aushandlungsprozesse und gibt neue Einblicke in das Verhältnis von jüdischen und nichtjüdischen Deutschen im Untersuchungszeitraum.

    Abstract: Is there a moral economy of capitalism? The term "moral economy" was coined in pre-capitalist times and does not refer to economy as we know it today. It was only in the nineteenth century that economy came to mean the production and circulation of goods and services. At the same time, the term started to be used in an explicitly critical tone: references to moral economy were normally critical of modern forms of economy, which were purportedly lacking in morals. In our times, too, the morality of capitalism is often the topic of debate and controversy. "Moral Economies" engages in these debates. Using historical case studies from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries the book discusses the degree to which economic actions and decisions were permeated with moral, good-vs-bad classifications. Moreover it shows how strongly antiquity's concept of "embedded" economy is still powerful in modernity. The model for this was often the private household, in which moral, social, and economic behavior patterns were intertwined. The do-it-yourself movement of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries was still oriented towards this model, thereby criticizing capitalism on moral grounds

Mais ailleurs, de I'Empire germanique à la péninsule ibérique, des principautés françaises au Milanais, surgissent des questions autour du thème fondamental du pouvoir, de ses fins et de ses moyens. Idéologie, hommes et finances, lignage, pays et peuple, image que veut donner le prince par ses tenues et ses résidences, rapports avec ses sujets, ses villes, sa noblesse et ses clercs, tels sont quelques-uns des points de vue que l'on trouvera présentés dans cet ouvrage. S'il n'est d'histoire que d'histoire de l'homme, dans sa chair comme dans ses comportements, le thème du prince et de son pouvoir dépasse de loin la sécheresse toute descriptive d'une histoire institutionnelle, pour devenir celle d'un homme mû tout entier par une ambition qu'il se doit de satisfaire au sein d'un « pays » et d'un peuple, qui lui en accordent ou non les moyens. Dépourvu de tout signe sacré et de tout attribut de souveraineté, le prince médiéval est le plus souvent étranger à la genèse monarchique de l'État moderne.
