    Abstract: This book explores the interaction between three key aspects of everyday life-language, writing, and mobility -with particular focus on their effects on language contact. While the book adopts an established view of language and society that is in keeping with the sociolinguistic paradigm developed in recent decades, it differs from earlier studies in that it assigns writing a central position. Sociolinguistics has long concentrated primarily on speech,but Florian Coulmas shows in this volume that the social importance of writing should not be disregarded: it is the most consequential technology ever invented; it suggests stability; and it defines borders. Linguistic studies have often emphasized that writing is external to language, but thediscipline nevertheless owes its analytic categories to writing. Finally, the digital revolution has fundamentally changed communication patterns, transforming the social functions of writing and consequently also of language

It is a book that deals with translation and nomadic identities, and with the many ways in which the increasing relevance of forced migrations has affected the practice of languages and the understanding of cultures in our times. Simona Bertacco and Nicoletta Vallorani examine the theoretical and practical nexus of translation and migration, two of the most visible and anxiety-producing keywords of our age, and use translation as the method for a global cultural theory firmly based in the humanities, both as creative output and interdisciplinary scholarship. Positioning their work within the field of translation studies with important borrowings from literary and cultural studies, visual and migration studies, the authors suggest a theory of translation that makes space for complexity, considers different "languages" (words, images, sounds, bodies), and takes into account both our emotional, pre-linguistic and instinctual reaction to the other as an invader and an enemy and the responsibility for the other that lies at the heart of translation.     Abstract: "Since 1970 the Law in Context series has been at the forefront of the movement to broaden the study of law. It has been a vehicle for the publication of innovative scholarly books that treat law and legal phenomena critically in their social, political and economic contexts from a variety of perspectives.     Abstract: "Principally, this book comprises a conceptual analysis of the illegality of a third-country national's stay by examining the boundaries of the overarching concept of illegality at the EU level. Having found that the holistic conceptualisation of illegality, constructed through a combination of sources (both EU and national law) falls short of adequacy, the book moves on to consider situations that fall outside the traditional binary of legal and illegal under EU law. The cases of unlawfully staying EU citizens and of non-removable illegally staying third-country nationals are examples of groups of migrants who are categorised as atypical. By looking at these two examples the book reveals not only the fragmentation of legal statuses in EU migration law but also the more general ill-fitting and unsatisfactory categorisation of migrants. The potential conflation of illegality with criminality as a result of the way EU databases regulate the legal regime of illegality of a migrant's stay is the first trend identified by the book. Subsequently, the book considers the functions of accessing legality (both instrumental and corrective). In doing so it draws out another trend evident in the EU illegality regime: a two-tier regime which discriminates on the basis of wealth and the instrumentalisation of access to legality by Member States for mostly their own purposes. Finally, the book proposes a corrective rationale for the regulation of illegality through access to legality and provides a number of normative suggestions as a way of remedying current deficiencies that arise out of the present supranational framing of illegality."--Bloomsbury Publishing

    Abstract: Since the turn of the century, South American governments and regional organisations have adopted the world's most open discourse on migration and citizenship. At a time when restrictive choices were becoming increasingly predominant around the world, South American policymakers presented their discourse as being both an innovative and exceptional 'new paradigm' and part of a morally superior, avant-garde path in policymaking. This book provides a critical examination of the South American legal framework through a historical and comparative analysis. Diego Acosta uses this analysis to assess whether the laws are truly innovative and exceptional, as well as evaluating their feasibility, strengths and weaknesses. By analysing the legal construction of the national and the foreigner in ten South American countries during the last two centuries, he demonstrates how different citizenship and migration laws have functioned, as well as showing why states have opted for certain regulation choices, and the consequence of these choices for state- and nation-building in the continent.     Abstract: Ethnische Identität erlangt man nicht durch Geburt oder Nationalität, man sucht sie sich aus oder sie wird einem zugeschrieben. Sie ist eine Form von Zugehörigkeit, auf die viele Faktoren Einfluss haben: Geburtsort, Wohnort, Schule, Umgebung, Sprache: Welcher Faktor den Ausschlag für eine Selbst- oder Fremdzuschreibung gibt, ist individuell unterschiedlich. Philip Bracker zeigt, wie ethnische Identität in den Erfahrungen der InformantInnen auftaucht und in welchen Konstellationen sie in der Interaktion zwischen Individuum und sozialer Umgebung hervortritt. Dabei wird besonders die ausgrenzende Wirkung alltagsüblicher Begriffe erkennbar. Es stellt sich heraus, dass ethnisierende Begriffe in vielen Situationen nicht die Realität der InformantInnen widerspiegeln und Zuschreibungen als diskriminierend empfunden werden. Mit den Lebensgeschichten der InformantInnen und ihren Erfahrungen im Rücken argumentiert der Autor dafür, ethnische Identität als wandelbar zu verstehen und Hybriditäten, Teilidentitäten und situations- und altersabhängige Umgestaltungen anzuerkennen. Philip Bracker hat am Institut für Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache der Universität Potsdam promoviert und war während dieser Zeit Koordinator des Zentrums 'Sprache, Variation und Migration'. Seit September 2017 arbeitet er als DAAD-Lektor an der Universität Porto.

    Abstract: Polizeiliche Unsensibilität im Umgang mit Migranten(opfern) ist kein singuläres sondern ein systemisches Phänomen, dessen Ursachen, Reproduktionsmechanismen und Rechtfertigungen im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Untersuchung stehen. Die Vorschläge für eine Anreicherung der kulturellen Kompetenz der Polizeibeamtinnen und -beamten aller Hierarchieebenen beruht auf diesen Erkenntnissen. Als „Verfassungsarbeiterin“ ist die Polizei verpflichtet, in ihrem Handeln die Grundrechte zu wahren. Soweit ihr normativer Anspruch, ihre normative Bindung und die Erwartungen des Bürgers. Ihre Einsatzpraxis gegenüber den verschiedenen kulturellen Gruppen wird jedoch – durch verschiedene Ereignisse hervorgerufen – immer wieder in der medialen Öffentlichkeit und Politik kritisiert.     Abstract: Über Kopftuch und Burka werden in Deutschland wie in Frankreich seit Jahren heftige Debatten geführt. Auslöser waren hierfür in Deutschland Entscheidungen des Bundesverfassungsgerichts aus den Jahren 2003 und 2015. In Frankreich erregen zwei Gesetze die Gemüter: das Kopftuchverbot für Schülerinnen 2004; ein generelles Verbot, mit einem Gesichtsschleier in der Öffentlichkeit aufzutreten, 2010. Nachdem der Europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte dieses Verbot nicht beanstandet hatte, wurde auch in Deutschland ein Burka-Verbot gefordert. Die Kontroverse um Kopftuch und Burka stellt aber nur ein Symptom dahinter liegender Probleme dar: Wieviel Homogenität ist für ein friedliches Zusammenleben in einer multireligiösen Gesellschaft erforderlich? Auf wieviel Toleranz ist sie angewiesen? Aber auch, wo sind deren Grenzen? Die Antworten werden auch bestimmt durch das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von Staat und Religion, das Ausmaß an Laizität. Deren Konzepte in Frankreich und Deutschland nähern sich gerade angesichts der Verbreitung des Islam in beiden Ländern ungeachtet unterschiedlicher historischer Ausgangspunkte an.
