Abstract: Eine Besonderheit der spanischen Kolonialherrschaft ist das explizite Verbot für »Ausländer«, nach Amerika zu reisen oder sich dort anzusiedeln. Dennoch lebten viele Immigranten englischer, portugiesischer, italienischer oder französischer Herkunft in den hispano-amerikanischen Kolonien. Diese »extranjeros«, deren Ausweisung zwar oft angeordnet, aber selten praktiziert wurde, stehen im Zentrum der Studie. Martin Biersack geht dem widersprüchlichen und oft spannungsreichen Verhältnis von »Spaniern« und »Ausländern«, Norm und Praxis, Duldung und Ausweisung nach und kann so erklären, wie und warum die Integration nichtspanischer Immigranten in die vormoderne koloniale Gesellschaft gelang, obwohl sie formal von dieser ausgeschlossen waren.

Abstract: Cities of Strangers illuminates life in European towns and cities as it was for the settled, and for the 'strangers' or newcomers who joined them between 1000 and 1500. Some city-states enjoyed considerable autonomy which allowed them to legislate on how newcomers might settle and become citizens in support of a common good. Such communities invited bankers, merchants, physicians, notaries and judges to settle and help produce good urban living. Dynastic rulers also shaped immigration, often inviting groups from afar to settle and help their cities flourish. All cities accommodated a great deal of difference - of language, religion, occupation - in shared spaces, regulated by law. But when, from around 1350, plague began regularly to occur within European cities, this benign cycle began to break down. High mortality rates led eventually to demographic crises and, as a result, less tolerant and more authoritarian attitudes emerged, resulting in violent expulsions of even long-settled groups. Tracing the development of urban institutions and using a wide range of sources from across Europe, Miri Rubin recreates a complex picture of urban life for settled and migrant communities over

Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, the United States mounted expansive public diplomacy programs in the Global South, including initiatives with the recently partitioned states of India and Pakistan. U.S. operations in these two countries became the second- and fourth-largest in the world, creating migration links that resulted in the emergence of American universities, such as the University of Houston, as immigration hubs for the highly selective, student-led South Asian migration stream starting in the 1950s. By the late twentieth century, Houston's South Asian community had become one of the most prosperous in the metropolitan area and one of the largest in the country. Mining archives and using new oral histories, Uzma Quraishi traces this pioneering community from its midcentury roots to the early twenty-first century, arguing that South Asian immigrants appealed to class conformity and endorsed the model minority myth to navigate the complexities of a shifting Sunbelt South.

Abstract: "Why do some governments try to limit immigrants' access to social benefits and entitlements while others do not? Through an in-depth study of Sweden, Canada, and the Netherlands, Immigration and the Politics of Welfare Exclusion maps the politics of immigrants' social rights in Western democracies. To achieve this goal, Edward A. Koning analyzes policy documents, public opinion surveys, data on welfare use, parliamentary debates, and interviews with politicians and key players in the three countries. Koning's findings are three-fold. First, the politics of immigrant welfare exclusion have little to do with economic factors and are more about general opposition to immigration and multiculturalism. Second, proposals for exclusion are particularly likely to arise in a political climate that incentivizes politicians to appear "tough" on immigration. Finally, the success of anti-immigrant politicians in bringing about exclusionary reforms depends on the response of the political mainstream, and the extent to which immigrants' rights are protected in national and international legal frameworks. Abstract: Deutsche Migranten in Argentinien: Ein historischer Beitrag zur Migrationsdebatte. Deutsche, österreichische und schweizer Einwanderer bildeten eine heterogene Gemeinde im Herzen der Metropole Buenos Aires. Sie entwickelten eine gemeinsame Erinnerungskultur, die ihnen Orientierung und Identität gab. Welche Charakteristika hatte diese Erinnerungskultur? Welche geschichtswissenschaftlichen Erklärungen gibt es für deren Herausbildung? Welche Erkenntnisse bringt uns dieser historische Fall für das Verständnis von Migration und Erinnerung in multiethnischen Gesellschaften in einer globalisierten Welt? Die Autorin zeigt, wie Aneignung und Abgrenzung von Geschichtsbildern in der Migrantengemeinde abliefen, die Entwicklung einer Meistererzählung und das Scheitern von geschichtspolitischen Projekten. Trotz vieler Bezüge zu den Herkunftsländern der Einwanderer war ihre Erinnerungskultur sehr stark von den Gegebenheiten in Argentinien, den Bedingungen vor Ort und der Zusammensetzung ihrer heterogenen Gemeinde abhängig.

Die Flucht aus der Heimat, der lange Weg mit Schlepperbanden, lebensgefährliche Bootspassagen und das Misstrauen im Ankunftsland - was ein Deutscher im 18. Jahrhundert auf der Flucht nach Amerika erlebte ... Das Risiko ist hoch - allein der lange Weg zur Küste verzehrt den Grossteil des für die Flucht aufgesparten Geldes. Immer neue Gebühren und Bestechungsgelder für Schlepper fallen an, mancher Reisende ist völlig mittellos, wenn er es endlich zum Hafen geschafft hat. Dort lagern Massen an Ausreisewilligen aus vielen Regionen Deutschlands in überteuerten und provisorischen Camps. Im Hafen herrschen fürchterliche Verhältnisse: alle wollen auf die Schiffe, Kinder ertrinken beim Versuch, auf eins zu gelangen. Die Schiffspassage ist gefürchtet. Zurecht - alle Schiffe sind überfüllt und viele in schrecklichem Zustand. Mancher Kahn sinkt bei der Überfahrt, auf allen ist der Proviant mager und schlecht, zuweilen sterben die Reisenden auf der Überfahrt wie die Fliegen. Manche ertrinken, manche sterben an Auszehrung, Hunger oder durch Krankheiten - die schwachen Kinder und Frauen meist zuerst. (Verlagstext)

Abstract: The dissertation deals with the question of whether the counselling and guidance tools available at job centres match the requirements of people with a migration background. The author presents a qualitative study on the subject, which demonstrates across all hierarchical levels whether and how job centre employees utilise their decision-making and action allowances for presenting this special clientèle to the job market. The result shows that job centres as social service providers do not as yet utilise their potential for integrating immigrants into the job market. Die Dissertation stellt die Frage, ob die Beratungs- und Förderinstrumente der Jobcenter zur Zielgruppe der Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund passen. Die Autorin legt dazu eine qualitative Studie vor, die über alle Hierarchieebenen hinweg zeigt, ob und wie Mitarbeiter der Jobcenter Entscheidungs- und Handlungsspielräume bei der Arbeitsmarktvermittlung dieser besonderen Klientel nutzen. Im Ergebnis wird deutlich, dass die Jobcenter als soziale Dienstleister ihre Potenziale bei der Arbeitsmarktintegration von Zuwanderern noch nicht ausschöpfen.

Abstract: In an engaging and original contribution to the field of memory studies, Joy Damousi considers the enduring impact of war on family memory in the Greek diaspora. Focusing on Australia's Greek immigrants in the aftermath of the Second World War and the Greek Civil War, the book explores the concept of remembrance within the larger context of migration to show how intergenerational experience of war and trauma transcend both place and nation. Abstract: This book is the first to present a detailed analysis of economic integration of immigrants in smaller areas of their host nations. It uses Atlantic Canada as a case in point and uses unpublished data based on several databases of Statistics Canada and Citizenship and Immigration, Canada. It identifies best policy practices that can also be used in other countries to address demographic challenges similar to those facing Canada, for example population ageing and youth out-migration from smaller regions to larger regions, through immigration. Economic integration of immigrants in Atlantic Canada is faster and better than it is nationally. An overarching result is that an analysis of regional data can lead to very different policy conclusions than the analysis of national data, which means that it can be risky to devise immigration policy based only on national data. A clear message is that economic benefits from immigration can be enhanced by facilitating a broader geographic distribution of immigrants, rather than maintaining their concentration in a few larger urban regions. A must read for immigration and population policy makers, immigrant settlement agencies and academic researchers

Abstract: "This book is an ethnographic witness to the everyday lives and suffering of Mexican migrants. Based on 5 years of research in the field (including berry-picking and traveling with migrants back and forth from Oaxaca up the West Coast), Holmes, an anthropologist and MD in the mold of Paul Farmer and Didier Fassin, uncovers how market forces, anti-immigrant sentiment, and racism undermine health and health care. Holmes' material is visceral and powerful-for instance, he trekked with his informants illegally through the desert border into Arizona, where they were apprehended and jailed by the Border Patrol. After he was released from jail (and his companions were deported back to Mexico), Holmes interviewed Border Patrol agents, local residents, and armed vigilantes in the borderlands. He lived with indigenous Mexican families in the mountains of Oaxaca and in farm labor camps in the United States, planted and harvested corn, picked strawberries, accompanied sick workers to clinics and hospitals, participated in healing rituals, and mourned at funerals for friends. The result is a "thick description" that conveys the full measure of struggle, suffering, and resilience of these farmworkers. Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies weds the theoretical analysis of the anthropologist with the intimacy of the journalist to provide a compelling examination of structural and symbolic violence, medicalization, and the clinical gaze as they affect the experiences and perceptions of a vertical slice of indigenous Mexican migrant farmworkers, farm owners, doctors, and nurses. This reflexive, embodied anthropology deepens our theoretical understanding of the ways in which socially structured suffering comes to be perceived as normal and natural in society and in health care, especially through imputations of ethnic body difference. In the vehement debates on immigration reform and health reform, this book provides the necessary stories of real people and insights into our food system and health care system for us to move forward to fair policies and solutions."--Publisher information

Abstract: Die Autorin unserer Studie, die Sozialwissenschaftlerin Sandra Siebenhüter, leuchtet in das Blackbox-System Leiharbeit hinein. Sie hat qualitative Daten recherchiert, die es so bisher noch nicht gab und die so manche politische und ökonomische Erfolgsmeldungen in einem zweifelhaften Licht erscheinen lassen. Durch 116 Interviews mit einer Vielzahl von Akteuren aller relevanten Bereiche der Leiharbeit hat sie tiefe Einblicke in den (Leih-)Arbeitsalltag von Menschen in Deutschland erhalten. Durch den starken Bezug zur Rolle von Leiharbeitern mit Migrationshintergrund, hat sie sich in der Studie den alltäglichen Problemen einer Gruppe genähert, die in den Statistiken der Bundesagentur gar nicht explizit erscheint, obwohl sie in der Leiharbeit überproportional häufig vertreten ist.
