Abstract: "Transcending Capitalism: Visions of a New Society in Modern American Thought explains why many influential midcentury American social theorists came to believe it was no longer meaningful to describe modern Western society as "capitalist," but instead preferred alternative terms such as "postcapitalist," "postindustrial," or "technological." Considering the discussion today of capitalism and its global triumph, it is important to understand why a prior generation of social theorists imagined the future of advanced societies not in a fixed capitalist form but in some course of development leading beyond capitalism."--Jacket

Abstract: The question of women and their rights was a prominent and ongoing topic of debate in the popular press of Turkey in the 1920s. This work presents an insightful analysis of those debates and follows its traces in obscene literature of the period, as a marginal, but influential branch of popular literature. Popular literature of the time carefully scrutinizes urban Istanbul women in particular, from their biological responsibilities to their behavior in the public arena, down to their clothe

Abstract: This briefs integrates and synthesizes an array of research about who helps others and under what conditions and discusses the implications of this research for a bystander intervention focused prevention agenda to reduce sexual and relationship violence in schools and communities. It combines an examination of bystander helping behavior in the specific context of sexual and relationship violence with social psychological research on bystander behavior outside that context in order to inform prevention efforts. This briefs is designed for researchers, practitioners, and students concerned about violence prevention and who are interesting in bystander intervention as a promising prevention strategy. Connections between research and practice are the foundation of this briefs. The briefs addresses the following questions: What is the promise of a bystander approach to violence prevention? Where does it fit within the spectrum of sexual and relationship violence prevention? How do we expand theoretical models of helping behavior to the unique context of interpersonal violence? How can we bring in research from other areas of health behavior change and developmental research on violence to inform a broader bystander action model? It provides a new synthesis and model of bystander interaction. It outlines a strategic plan for new research and next steps in prevention practices

Abstract: "I propose, in the following pages, to present a critique of contemporary social thought in the light of a scientific humanism--a humanism, i.e., which, steering clear of ethical attitudes that arise from purely personal predilections, does not pronounce a doctrine unsound unless it is either out of focus with the objectively observable human relations within which it functions, or unless these relations themselves violate our fundamental human passions. Current social criticism still selects its weapons from the armory of ethical idealization, metaphysical abstraction or biologic simplification. An Hegelian spirit, a Nietzschian stomach, or a Benthamite bible will not, however, in our critique, be permitted to determine the doom of an idea. Planting our critical standards within the solid soil of social relations, we shall allow these relations themselves to be the final touchstone of theory. Moreover, since our contemporary professoriat--those official assassins of social truth--are concealing their theoretical impotence behind the elusive mask of humanism, it will be our aim to demonstrate the essential inhumanity of their humanism, and having driven them from their moral moorings, challenge them to defend their doctrines on purely objective grounds. Social theory, broadly speaking, includes within its scope all those phenomena that derive from the realm of human society. Our critical excursions will therefore take us into such widely divergent fields as Anthropology and Ethics, Art and Economics, Law, Language, Sex, and War. These and a variety of other human themes we shall survey from our one theoretic standpoint, convinced that such a procedure alone can concentrate within our analytic searchlight the maximum of critical illumination. But criticism is not enough. Therefore, although we are fully aware that a new structure of positive social theory cannot well be reared unless upon a foundation of a new social world, we, nevertheless, believe that the broad outlines of such a theoretic structure can, in a number of instances, even now be briefly indicated and suggested. We therefore humbly offer what, so far as we know, is a new orientation in the psychology of instinct, a new approach to the problem of the soul, a new concept of culture, and a new philosophy of Art"--Foreword. Abstract: Why did it take so long to end slavery in the United States, and what did it mean that the nation existed eighty-eight years as a "house divided against itself," as Abraham Lincoln put it? The decline of slavery throughout the Atlantic world was a protracted affair, says Patrick Rael, but no other nation endured anything like the United States. Here the process took from 1777, when Vermont wrote slavery out of its state constitution, to 1865, when the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery nationwide. Rael immerses readers in the mix of social, geographic, economic, and political factors that

Abstract: This book explores the meaning of home for Cypriot refugees living in London since their island was torn apart by war. Taking an innovative approach, it looks at how spaces, time, social networks and sensory experiences come together as home is constructed. It places refugee narratives at its centre to reveal the agency of those forced to migrate.

Abstract: "How do UN Security Council and International Criminal Court interventions, both part of the Justice Cascade, color representations of mass violence? What images of suffering and of responsible actors arise instead from the humanitarianism and diplomacy fields? How are these competing perspectives communicated to the public via mass media? Zooming in on the case of Darfur, Joachim J. Savelsberg analyzes over three thousand news reports and opinion pieces and interviews leading newspaper correspondents, NGO experts, and foreign ministry officials from eight countries to show the dramatic differences in the framing of mass violence around the world and across social fields. Representing Mass Violence contributes to our understanding of how the world acknowledges and responds to violence in the Global South"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract: This scientific reader follows the tracks of transnational living environments. In a fresh way, the authors connect classical and literary modes of scientific description: Through the example of migrants in Germany, who have to get by on tight financial resources, this volume looks at different facets of their everyday life as well as challenges and practices that transcend national borders. The suspenseful and informative topics lie at the intersections of (social) pedagogy, sociology, cultural anthropology, ethnology, and psychology.

Abstract: Increasing disparities within cities, the privatization of the public sector, the growing cost of housing - Processes like these manifest in single urban districts and create conditions for citizens' initiatives. At the same time, places change in meaning due to people's actions on the one hand and government strategies on the other. Manuela Wade follows these processes and shows how the inhabitants of three selected urban districts in different parts of the world deal with it, what the role of housing is in this context, and why space as a category is relevant for participation research.

Abstract: Artivism, the combination of art and social action in public space, is often mentioned in the same breath as the great revolts and occupations of recent years. Artivism however also takes place - less spectacularly - in everyday urban settings. This books presents projects and people from the Rhineland Berlin and Istanbul, who through actionistic research and artistic action are changing, challenging and improving the daily living environments in their cities. The question: »Who does the city belong to?« can be answered through creative, good-homoured and combative appropriation. The articles here offer a great deal of motivation for researchers, artists and activists alike.

Abstract: Welche Bedeutung hat Tourismus für die Gesellschaft heute?
Abstract: What meaning does tourism have for society today? Departing from the thesis of »staged authenticity« (MacCannell), and by way of touristic case studies, Robert Schäfer sounds out the role that tourism plays in contemporary society, and the meaning of authenticity in this context.Through the entanglement of empirical research and theoretical construction of concepts, the study is of interest for anybody who is interested in a cultural-sociological explanation of tourism and an empirically satisfying theory of the authentic

Abstract: How do second and third wave migrants deal with precarity and unemployment? Which strategies of risk management and recognition are carried out?

Abstract: For many years, Muslims have been involved in philanthropic activities focused on helping the poor and needy through varied types of ‘third sector’ organizations (TSOs). Nevertheless, many people in Muslim majority countries (MMCs) face human security crises and not much is known about the TSOs in these countries or their human security provisions. To fill this knowledge gap, this volume documents and analyses philanthropic and other types of third sector organizations including the awqaf (Muslim endowments) vis-à-vis human security in MMCs. The study is comprehensive in treating the subject matter - examining the legal environment, characteristics, extent, and functioning of all forms of the third sector and their human security performances - and in geographic coverage, covering all forty-seven Muslim majority countries in Africa and Asia. It is also innovative as it expounds on TSO density analysis, state support score (SSS), and a third-sector capability measure (TCM) to study their interrelationships. This volume is an essential unique reference book for students and scholars of the third sector and human security, international organizations, development agencies, donor governments, security experts, and in particular anybody with interests in Islam and MMCs.

Abstract: This collection analyzes shifting relationships between gender and labour in post-Fordist times. Contingency creates a sexual contract in which attachments to work, mothering, entrepreneurship and investor subjectivity are the new regulatory ideals for women over a range of working arrangements, and across classed and raced dimensions.

    Abstract: Annotation
Abstract: This collection of fifteen methodological texts by a group of thirty international youth and social researchers is a polyphony of scholarly voices advancing the field of qualitative inquiry in youth studies. The book homes in on ways of adapting, remixing and reconsidering qualitative methods in order to better serve youth researchers in the twenty-first century. The texts included in this collection offer honest and open accounts of searching for, assembling, testing, and rejecting creative, well-known, or unconventional techniques from various methodical homes. As is emphasized in the title, this is not so much an overview as an inquiry into conducting youth research in an environment that is constantly transforming. Researchers are always seeking out the best ways to capture and (co)-produce meaning that can be used for the greater good. This book offers fresh interpretations of, and feedback on, inventive combinations of methods, research questions and theoretical frameworks. It will be of interest to all who work in youth studies and sociology, and particularly useful to postgraduate students, junior scholars, and established researchers seeking to branch out into new terrain

Abstract: "Opportunities to "have your say," "get involved," and "join the conversation" are everywhere in public life. From crowdsourcing and town hall meetings to government experiments with social media, participatory politics increasingly seem like a revolutionary antidote to the decline of civic engagement and the thinning of the contemporary public sphere. Many argue that, with new technologies, flexible organizational cultures, and a supportive policymaking context, we now hold the keys to large-scale democratic revitalization. Democratizing Inequalities shows that the equation may not be so simple. Modern societies face a variety of structural problems that limit potentials for true democratization, as well as vast inequalities in political action and voice that are not easily resolved by participatory solutions. Popular participation may even reinforce elite power in unexpected ways. Resisting an oversimplified account of participation as empowerment, this collection of essays brings together a diverse range of leading scholars to reveal surprising insights into how dilemmas of the new public participation play out in politics and organizations. Through investigations including fights over the authenticity of business-sponsored public participation, the surge of the Tea Party, the role of corporations in electoral campaigns, and participatory budgeting practices in Brazil, Democratizing Inequalities seeks to refresh our understanding of public participation and trace the reshaping of authority in today's political environment"--

Abstract: Amongst Digital Humanists brings an ethnographic account of the changing landscape of humanities scholarship as it affects individual scholars, academic fields and institutions, and argues for a pluralistic vision of digital knowledge production in the humanities. Based on fieldwork conducted at twenty-three academic and funding institutions in the US and Europe and on interviews with researchers, students, librarians, web developers, policy makers, and funders, this study shows how digital technologies transform the ways humanists envision, carry out, communicate, and organize their work and approach their objects of inquiry.

Abstract: Not until the eighteenth century was the image of the tender, full-time mother invented. This image retains its power today. Inventing Maternity demonstrates that, despite its association with an increasingly standardized set of values, motherhood remained contested terrain. Drawing on feminist, cultural, and postcolonial theory, Inventing Maternity surveys a wide range of sources--medical texts, political tracts, religious doctrine, poems, novels, slave narratives, conduct books, and cookbooks. The first half of the volume, covering the mid-seventeenth to the late eighteenth centuries, consid

Abstract: The rise of scientific sociology in America -- Du Bois, scientific sociology, and race -- Du Bois's Atlanta School of Scientific Sociology -- Robert E. Park and Booker T. Washington vs. Du Bois -- Sociology of black America : Park vs. Du Bois -- Max Weber meets W.E.B. Du Bois -- Intellectual schools and the Atlanta School -- Legacies and conclusions
Abstract: "In this groundbreaking book, Aldon D. Morris's ambition is truly monumental: to help rewrite the history of sociology and to acknowledge the primacy of W. E. B. Du Bois's work in the founding of the discipline. Taking on the prevailing narrative of how sociology developed, Morris, a major scholar of African American social movements, probes the way in which the history of the discipline has been written, giving credit to Robert E. Park at the University of Chicago, who worked with the conservative black leader Booker T. Washington to render Du Bois invisible. Uncovering the seminal theoretical work of Du Bois in developing a "scientific" sociology through a variety of methodologies, Morris examines how the leading scholars of the day disparaged and ignored Du Bois's work. The Scholar Denied is based on extensive, rigorous primary source research; the book is the result of a decade of research, writing, and revision. In uncovering the economic and political factors that marginalized the contributions of Du Bois, enabling Park to be recognized as the "father" of the discipline, Morris delivers a wholly new narrative of American intellectual and social history that places one of America's key intellectuals, W. E. B. Du Bois, at its center. The Scholar Denied is a must-read for everyone interested in American history, racial inequality, and the academy. In challenging our understanding of the past, the book promises to engender debate and discussion"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: This book is open access under a CC BY license and explores the under-researched history of male mental illness from the mid-twentieth century. It argues that statistics suggesting women have been more vulnerable to depression and anxiety are misleading since they underplay a host of alternative presentations of 'distress' more common in men.

Abstract: Interest in relations between knowledge, power, and space has a long tradition in a range of disciplines, but it was reinvigorated in the last two decades through critical engagement with Foucault and Gramsci. This volume focuses on relations between knowledge and power. It shows why space is fundamental in any exercise of power and explains which roles various types of knowledge play in the acquisition, support, and legitimization of power. Topics include the control and manipulation of knowledge through centers of power in historical contexts, the geopolitics of knowledge about world politics, media control in twentieth century, cartography in modern war, the power of words, the changing face of Islamic authority, and the role of Millennialism in the United States. This book offers insights from disciplines such as geography, anthropology, scientific theology, Assyriology, and communication science

Abstract: This book analyzes systemic problems affecting women's mental health--social inequities, marginalization, racism, and displacement among them--and proposes holistic real-world approaches to practice and policy. Women’s experiences from around the globe are examined including Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, India, Iran, Italy, Ivory Coast, Nepal, Pakistan, Portugal, Rwanda, Senegal, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United States. Together, the chapters in this book deepen our understanding of the intersections of gender, race, culture, age, class, immigration status, and motherhood. Ongoing issues such as violence against women, maternal depression, eating disorders, and the stressors affecting female health care workers are discussed in familial and societal contexts. Contributors from a range of disciplines also identify relevant mental health assets including resilience, social support, and culturally-based healing, and suggest changes that sectors and systems must make to recognize women’s diversity and develop and implement appropriate policies and services. Included in the international and interdisciplinary coverage: Structural Determinants of Women’s Mental Health Community, Social Support, and Women’s Mental Health Health and Social Services, Resistance, and Women’s Mental Health Displacement, Migration, Resettlement, and Women’s Mental Health Poverty, Marginalization, and Women’s Mental Health Motherhood, Resilience, and Women’s Mental Health At a time when barriers to women's well-being are recognized as a global health crisis, Women's Mental Health is a profound source of information for researchers in psychology, public health, and educational policy
