Abstract: Aspirations, desires, opportunism and exploitation are seldom considered as fundamental elements of donor-driven development as it impacts on the lives of people in poor countries. Yet, alongside structural interventions, emotional or affective engagements are central to processes of social change and the making of selves for those caught up in development's slipstream. Intimate Economies of Development lays bare the ways that culture, sexuality and health are inevitably and inseparably linked to material economies within trajectories of modernization in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. Abstract: The core idea shared by all cosmopolitan views is that all human beings belong to a single community and the ultimate units of moral concern are individual human beings, not states or particular forms of human associations. Nevertheless, the attempts to ground a political theory on overarching universal principles is in contradiction with the plurality of social, cultural, political, religious interpretative standpoints in the contemporary world. Abstract: Do political leaders determine whether a polity will receive a democratic future or not? Research and advocates of democracy agree on the significance of political elites for democratization, yet there is a need for a more specific understanding of their role. This book develops a theory of political leadership at the point of nascent statehood to explain the emergence of resilient democracies. It employs four diverse case studies to examine the role of leadership and democratic consolidation. In doing so, the book identifies certain capacities of political leaders at the critical moment of nas

The Indonesia-Malaysia relationship is one of the most important bilateral relationships in Southeast Asia, especially because Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country and third largest democracy, is the most populous and powerful nation in the region. Both states are committed to the relationship, especially at the highest levels of government, and much has been made of their 'sibling' identity. The relationship is built

Religious language has always been at the forefront of American politics but this has increased since the events of 9/11. 'Myth and the Christian Nation' presents a startling analysis of how and why Christianity and national identity have been woven together in recent American political discourse. Drawing on examples of religious myth-making across the ancient world 'Myth and the Christian Nation' brings the weight of history to bear on America today, a place where myth, monotheism, sovereignty and power can be harnessed together

Abstract: Though there has been much research on the incomplete emancipation project of state socialism in East and Central Europe, very little has been published on how the state and its institutions conceived of gender as a concept. This book seeks to understand if and how this conceptualization developed in the second half of the twentieth century, and what impact it had on everyday life and on culture. This study moves beyond the dichotomous gender perspectives and towards a nuanced understanding of the diverse discursive negotiations, agendas, actors and agency involved in state-socialist gender pr

Abstract: What is the nature of the 'self', how do everyday experiences shape it, and how does it influence our thinking, judgements and behaviors? Such questions constitute enduring puzzles in psychology, and are also of critical practical importance for applied domains such as clinical, counseling, educational and organizational psychology. In this book a select group of eminent international researchers survey the most recent advances in research of the self. In particular, they discuss the influence of cognitive and intra-psychic processes (Part 1), interpersonal and relational variables (Part 2)

Abstract: The methods and thinking of economics permeate a large part of the IS discipline. Reciprocally, newly emerging research methods relying on the IT-enabled treatment of massive data aggregates feed economic research. As new and radical forms of IT innovation continue to energize electronic commerce, IS researchers face a daunting task in using existing empirical methods and tools to understand the threats, opportunities, risks, and rewards of these new techniques. This groundbreaking volume leads the way. It introduces new methodological approaches to data analysis as well as new techniques for collecting and cataloging transactional data. The ideas it presents have broad appeal and demonstrate what is possible when new techniques and new ways of thinking are brought to bear on complex research problems.

Abstract: As Tony Blair has said, ""Technology has revolutionised the way we work and is now set to transform education. Children cannot be effective in tomorrow's world if they are trained in yesterday's skills.""Cyberkids draws together research in the sociology of childhood and social studies of technology to explore children's experiences in the Information Age. The book addresses key policy debates about social inclusion and exclusion, children's identities and friendships in on-line and off-line worlds and their relationships with families and teachers. It counters contemporary moral panics about

Abstract: Making Population Geography is a lively account of the intellectual history of population geography, arguing that, while population geography may drift in and out of fashion, it must continue to supplement its demographic approach with a renewed emphasis on cultural and political accounts of compelling population topics, such as HIV-AIDS, sex trafficking, teen pregnancy, citizenship and global ageing, in order for it to shed light on contemporary society. Making Population Geography draws both on the writings of those like Wilbur Zelinsky and Pat Gober who were at the very epicentre of sp

Abstract: The concept of social power, who holds it and how they use it is a widely debated subject particularly in the field of discourse analysis, and the wider arena of sociolinguistics. In her new book,Joanna Thornborrow challenges the received notion that power is necessarily held by some speakers and not by others. Through the detailed analysis of communication and interaction within a range of institutional settings, she examines power as an emerging, negotiated phenomenon between participants with different status and goals. Written in a clear style which combines attention to technical detail wi

Abstract: The Naqab Bedouin and Colonialism brings together new scholarship to challenge perceived paradigms, often dominated by orientalist, modernist or developmentalist assumptions on the Naqab Bedouin. The past decade has witnessed a change in both the wider knowledge production on, and political profile of, the Naqab Bedouin. This book addresses this change by firstly, endeavouring to overcome the historic isolation of Naqab Bedouin studies from the rest of Palestine studies by situating, studying and analyzing their predicaments firmly within the contemporary context of Israeli settler-c

Abstract: This case discusses the use of ethnography in a study with young children. The study uncovers how one multi-ethnic reception class in the North of England (4-5 year-olds) explored identity, diversity and (in)equality within their school peer interactions; and argues that ethnography was the most appropriate methodology to use, as it allowed the researcher to build up relationships of trust with children and gave them the time to learn how to listen to young children's 'voice'

Abstract: This study provides an understanding of bottom-up community empowerment in Australia. Bottom-up empowerment refers to the social change process that people initiate to gain control over resources including decisions that shape their lives. Thus, the study involved an examination of how disadvantaged community groups use collective action to change their situation. These included an examination of their organisation, function, activities and also an understanding of the context under which these community groups function from their own perspectives. The questions asked were concerned with both social structure and collective action, and the research approach was qualitative

Abstract: The detailed interview is a classic method of qualitative data collection. To be conducted effectively, interviews demand considerable skill and judgment. Nowhere is this more critical than when working with participants from disadvantaged and marginalised populations and when the research examines stigmatised conditions and taboo issues. To explore the techniques involved in researching these issues, this case study unpacks the approach taken for the Caribbean Masculinities Project, which used in-depth interviewing to explore 'coming of age' and 'becoming a man' among 138 diverse young Caribbean men from eight countries. The practical experiences and the lessons learned are outlined

Abstract: This case study addresses how participant observation sessions and semi-structured interviews were combined in a PhD study concluded in 2011. Its principles can be applied to other mixed-qualitative methods research projects. It considers the advantages of the methods used as well as how the methodological, theoretical and practical challenges that the methods presented were managed during the research. Specifically, the case illuminates the advantages and challenges of using these qualitative methods to produce accounts of everyday thought and practice that are both plausible (rather than valid/accurate), that is, credible to gay men and the academic community, and transferable (rather than replicable), that is, could be heard in similar post-industrial cities with growing gay cultures or 'scenes'

Abstract: While target market segmentation is one of the most fundamental and celebrated concepts in marketing, targeting at-risk ethnic minorities with products considered harmful is simultaneously viewed as unethical, bordering on criminal. At the same time, it appears that minority wine consumers may feel ignored by wine marketers, distributors, and producers, despite the fact that ethnic minorities (African Americans, along with Asians and Hispanics) are the fastest-growing market segment in the United States. This study characterises this phenomenon as a case of the market segment 'peering through the looking glass' (a reference to Alice in the classic tale 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', and her desire to be on the other side of a mirror or looking glass)

She chose this method to explore practice in the organisation holistically, because it fitted with my research aim which was to look at how the group developed over time. The analysis was influenced by the work of Pierre Bourdieu on personal orientation to social situations (habitus) and the resources that people use in interaction (capitals)

Abstract: Care is one of the most deeply shared feelings on earth. It is a universal need that everyone benefits from at some point in their life whether in public or private. Well care for individuals, especially aging and disabled individuals, is fundamental to creating a developed, ethical, and engaged society. In this case study, the authors turn to their experiences as qualitative researchers to consider the methodological tensions and challenges involved when conducting ethnographic fieldwork where the bodies of participants regularly experience injury, illness, and pain

Focused on 'the problem' of adapting to climate change in policy subsystems, this case draws from a PhD study (Bosomworth, 2012) that was funded by the Bushfire Co-operative Research Centre (CRC) of Australia - a research collaboration between research institutions and end users such as industries, communities and governments

Abstract: This case explores the application of a combined approach to discourse analysis to the topic of 'older motherhood'. In it, we discuss the forms of discourse analysis that are generally applied within psychology, namely, Foucauldian discourse analysis and discursive psychology, and the strengths and limitations of these approaches. Furthermore, we discuss how these two approaches might be combined for the purpose of qualitative psychological research. We demonstrate how such a combined approach was developed and applied to the topic of 'older motherhood', and finally, we offer some guidance on how others might appropriate a similar approach in their research projects

Abstract: Recent research efforts have taken advantage of functionality provided by Twitter's Application Programming Interface to develop methodologies to extract information that allows us to understand the growth of Twitter, its geographic spread and the processes by which particular Twitter users have attracted followers. From politicians to sporting teams, and from YouTube personalities to reality television stars, this technique enables us to gain an understanding of what prompts users to follow others on Twitter. This article outlines how we came upon this approach, describes the method we adopted to produce accession graphs and discusses their use in Twitter research. It also addresses the wider ethical implications of social network analytics, particularly in the context of a detailed study of the Twitter user base

Abstract: This case study reflects on methodological choices and their implications when planning research on and seeking access to a workplace setting. The choice of a mixed-methods approach is explained in its connection to the research problem, and a detailed illustration of the research design and its implications is provided. In particular, the importance of negotiation and methodological flexibility is highlighted here in the process of gaining access to the research field. In a workplace setting, the highly unequal distribution of power between researchers and gatekeepers can transform the process of access in a complex bargaining stage which presents risks that may severely affect the researchers' ability to address their research questions

The research process is compared to an everyday activity (cooking), to elucidate the ways in which a potentially unfamiliar scholarly approach is similar to aspects of life with which readers may have more experience. There is also a behind-the-scenes look at one particular research program, which combined social and developmental psychology

The chosen methodology - conversations, observations, journaling, photography and art - reflects the challenges the participants and I faced as we negotiated different worlds: the Somali world and the Australian world. This case study reveals my emotions as I was challenged by the dominant culture's judgement of where a White woman should be positioned in relation to the 'Other', and as I experienced a lack of trust in my capabilities and an unsettling of my own identity

Abstract: The UK national media framed the riot in the Stokes Croft area of Bristol on 21 April 2011 as a manifestation of the local campaign against the opening of a Tesco supermarket in Cheltenham Road, an arterial route through the area. New media technologies enabled alternative perspectives on these events to emerge that not only rejected this link but also criticised the 'heavy-handed' policing operation in the Telepathic Heights squat to remove petrol bombs that were allegedly being prepared for use against the supermarket. This project set out to examine whether the use of YouTube to share acts of 'inverse surveillance' elicited support for the viewpoints of local residents that had been largely absent from the media coverage of the disturbances

Abstract: Since 2001, the European Social Survey has been mapping attitudinal and behavioural changes in Europe's social, political and moral climate. Recognised for its rigorous standards and high-quality data, the European Social Survey is used to inform academic and political debate, allowing scholars, policymakers and think tanks to measure and interpret change over time. This case study outlines the European Social Survey lifecycle, from initial research design through to analysis and dissemination activities, providing a detailed description of the research methods employed and the challenges associated with delivering a high-quality cross-national social research project

Abstract: In 2002, John Fulton commenced a study which explored the ways in which participation in boxing could lead to the development of capital. This case study provides an account of one aspect of that larger study and, as such, focuses on the involvement of young men in amateur boxing, rather than professional boxing. The methods used to collect data were interviews and observation. This account examines the thinking behind the design of the study, and the ways in which theoretical issues are related to the findings

Abstract: The methodology to access the pre-conscious discussed in this case study originates in research which was concerned with highlighting the neglect of the pre-conscious as a characteristic of agency or people. This case study outlines a methodology based on life-history interviews for accessing the pre-conscious and examines the particular challenges involved in documenting this elusive aspect of agency. This methodology is explored in the context of research on unconscious bias which is argued to be a key factor which perpetuates gender inequality in the workplace

Abstract: During summer 2011, women politicians and bureaucrats were asked about the role of women as leaders addressing terrorist violence. The women were involved in political institutions and in social movement organizations aimed at peace, prisoners' rights, and/or victims' rights. This case discusses the use of fieldwork and interviews in the context of terrorism. We explore several important themes of concern to field researchers: 'going native', using human subjects protocols, the shifting research contexts of violence and peace, and reflexivity

Abstract: Hermeneutic phenomenology informed two qualitative methodologies used in Shelley Hannigan's doctoral research: narrative case studies and auto-ethnography. Through these methodologies, she investigated the phenomenon of place and identity in visual artistic practice. Four narrative case studies of four artists were developed using experience-focused narrative inquiry and thematic analysis. Auto-ethnography was used to investigate the phenomenon of place and identity within her own practice as visual artist

Abstract: In 2007 and 2008, Rachel Kulick worked with a team of adult and youth researchers from Youth Media Action, an independent media outlet, on a participatory action research project to better understand the media needs and interests of urban youth. This study centres on training and working with a group of youth researchers to conduct a community needs assessment with urban youth, media educators, and parents that included focus groups, interviews, and an online survey. It brings into relief the author's experiences doing this work with specific attention to some of the possibilities and challenges of expanding the boundaries of research to include youth from marginalised communities that are rarely included in these circles

Abstract: As part of a larger project addressing (the future of) identity management technologies, the author's wanted to survey public perceptions and use of such technologies. Keen to avoid or at least mitigate the effects of survey fatigue among our respondents, they decided to create a research game. In doing so, they would create for respondents a character and a mission and transform their research questions into game scenarios and challenges. This case study discusses the process involved and the ways that the principles of gamification can be adopted in relatively low-cost ways by researchers working with limited resources. Several matters for consideration and potential drawbacks are also identified and considered; as with any innovative approach, researchers must be reflexive, but they can be rewarded with rich data - and happy respondents

Abstract: In 2012, Maissa Khatib embarked on a PhD study to examine what happens to Arab Muslim women when they arrive in the United States. Little is known about these women in the growing and diverse Arab Muslim population, and there is limited information available regarding their experiences of living in the United States. Previous studies had relied largely on quantitative methods to examine the health risks and prevalence of illnesses within the Arab/Muslim American population; only a few qualitative studies shed light on the health needs of this population. This case study provides an account of one practical aspect of a 2-year-long PhD project, taking the reader to the heart of some specific situational and methodological problems that arose in the course of the research

Abstract: Although some longitudinal studies of lifecourse transitions have been undertaken, these tend not to focus on how everyday life changes, and the concomitant environmental impacts. The Exploring Lifestyle Changes in Transition study undertook an in-depth exploration into the way people's practices and lifestyles changed during two major lifecourse transitions, and the extent to which these changes may be considered more or less sustainable. The study used a mixed-methods, longitudinal approach by following 80 participants in four different locations in England and Scotland as they either became first-time parents or retired

There is also evidence that group or network membership has positive benefits and may serve to reduce isolation and depression. Jill Wilkens' research explored the issue of loneliness and isolation in older lesbians, using a preliminary focus group followed by in-depth interviews to elicit the subjective experience of loneliness and isolation of 10 older lesbians attending an over-55s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) social group at a centre located in an industrial city in West Yorkshire

It focuses on the 65 semi-structured interviews that the author conducted with political elites in Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia and the challenges of nesting them into the statistical analysis. In particular, it addresses problems of how to prepare interviews based on quantitative findings and sampling strategies to counter bias through non-response

Abstract: In 2007, Elaine Weiner embarked on a 3-year research project to explore how the Czech state and its citizens accommodated legislation-mandated as a prerequisite of European Union accession - on equal opportunity/equal treatment of women and men. To date, much of the scholarship on the European Union's enlargement eastward has focused on East European states' compliance and most especially their noncompliance with European Union stipulates. Comparatively little attention has been paid to how citizens - that is, ordinary women and men - construe these reforms. This case study takes up this question from the vantage point of Czech citizens using vignettes as an ideal means of tapping into apprehension and awareness about the inequalities that underlie equal opportunity/equal treatment laws, and recourse(s) available - legal and/or otherwise
