    Abstract: Fleischproduktion und Fleischkonsum stehen seit Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts zunehmend in der Kritik. Gesundheit, Tierethik und Klimawandel sind wesentliche Gründe.     Abstract: This book provides new and established researchers with innovative methodologies and research strategies to explore European security integration from a different perspective, challenging traditional theoretical interpretations. It takes a step back from well-established theoretical approaches to the European Union’s (EU) Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) to ask more fundamental questions about the core assumptions underpinning research on European security integration. It supports methodological innovations with an analysis of the most significant empirical problems of European security governance, including the war in Ukraine or the role of Russia in European security. In the last chapter, the author offers ideas for new pedagogical approaches to teaching European Studies. Kamil Zwolski is Associate Professor in International Politics at the University of Southampton, UK, and Jean Monnet Chair of European Security Governance. His research interests include the theory and practice of European security and its governance, Europe-Russia relations and the role of the EU/NATO in European security. His previous book, European Security in Integration Theory (2018), examines federalism and functionalism – two fundamentals, yet largely forgotten, theories of international integration, in the context of the war in Ukraine and contemporary European security order.

    Abstract: This volume examines some of the major challenges and opportunities for Europe in the light of the intensifying US-China global strategic rivalry. In doing so, the book investigates European roles and behavior in the contemporary US-China-Europe triangular relationship. While the book's focus is on Europe, the contributors originate from, or are based in, the US and China, thus presenting a unique outside-in perspective to the analysis of European conduct in the areas of security, geo-politics, geo-economics, global governance, development, and climate change. Each area is investigated by one American and one Chinese scholar, respectively, presenting the different views held on Europe’s behavior and positioning in the US and China.     Abstract: 1959 entstanden mit Dave Brubecks "Time Out", John Coltranes "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" und Ornette Colemans "The Shape of Jazz to Come" stilprägende Alben, die für die weitere Entwicklung des Jazz wegweisend waren. In ihnen finden sich metrische und harmonisch-melodische Konzepte sowie grundlegende Neuerungen in der Organisation des Zusammenspiels und im Umgang mit improvisierter Musik, die heute fester Bestandteil des Jazz sind. Der Autor geht den Ursprüngen und Vorläufern dieser Konzepte nach, untersucht die biografischen Bezüge der Protagonisten zu den Konzepten und zum Zeitgeist und betrachtet die Rezeptionsgeschichte der Alben.
    Abstract: The year 1959 saw the release of Dave Brubeck's "Time Out", John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" and Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come", all style-defining albums that were groundbreaking in the development of jazz. They contain metrical and harmonic-melodic concepts as well as fundamental innovations in the organisation of ensemble playing and the handling of improvised music, which are an integral part of jazz today. The author traces the origins and antecedents of these concepts, examines the protagonists' biographical references to the concepts and the zeitgeist, and looks at the reception history of the albums.

Weithin unbekannt ist aber die sozialrassistische Verfolgung derer, die die Nationalsozialisten für genetisch verdorbene und deshalb "auszumerzende" Menschen, für "Asoziale" und "Berufsverbrecher" hielten und sie deshalb als Häftlinge mit dem grünen oder schwarzen Winkel, einem Stoffdreieck auf der linken Brustseite der gestreiften Häftlingskleidung, in die Konzentrationslager sperrten. Dieses Buch beschreibt nicht nur eindringlich die historischen und politischen Hintergründe sowie die Verfolgung dieser Menschen im Nationalsozialismus, sondern stellt auch dar, warum sie in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland jahrzehntelang von jeder moralischen und rechtlichen Anerkennung ausgeschlossen wurden - bis der Deutsche Bundestag sie 2020 mit 70jähriger Verspätung als Verfolgte des Nationalsozialismus anerkannte. In bewegenden Darstellungen von mehr als zwanzig Nachkommen, die die Geschichte ihres jeweiligen Vorfahren erzählen, werden erstmals in der erinnerungskulturellen Publikationsgeschichte die Biografien einzelner Verfolgter vorgestellt - es zeigt sich, wie das Trauma der verleugneten Opfer bis heute in den Familien wirkt.

    Abstract: This volume brings together a series of discussions by scholars from a range of disciplinary, (trans)regional and epistemic perspectives that came out of the Berlin-based "co2libri" networking initiative, with longstanding collaborative partners based in the global South. "Co2libri" stands for "conceptual collaboration: living borderless research interaction". As an interdisciplinary and transregional oriented initiative, co2libri envisages a multicentric perspective that integrates neglected positions of Southern theory and praxis into the heart of academic conversations. Co2libri’s collaborative endeavor builds on long-standing active connections with partners in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Instead of setting an agenda from the North, it proposes to figure out ways forward through collaborative engagement, building on relationships of mutual trust. Using formats that facilitate substantial and open-ended discussion, we are re-thinking theory and method, academic practices, and research ethics, while keeping material inequalities in view.

    Abstract: Over a million Kurdish-Yezidi refugees are dispersed across European cities and towns. However, they are neither recognized as a distinct community of stateless immigrants nor as a distinct European ethnic or religious minority. They are frequently utilized as data sources without having a voice to address their challenges. This oral testimony project, moving beyond, but contributing to, conventional academic research, provides these communities with a space to tackle multiple questions in their own languages and with their own voices. The book seeks to answer what drives their departures from their home countries, how they escape, what shapes their lives in receiving cities, and finally, how homeland affairs influence their lives in new environments. By addressing all these themes, this book presents refugee-centric knowledge by and with refugees as objects and subjects of their narratives and transcends neoliberal humanitarian, state-centric, and colonial hegemonic epistemes that limit refugees' epistemic capabilities and viewpoints. Veysi Dag is a research fellow of the Minerva Foundation at the Department of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also a research associate at SOAS, University of London. His research interests focus on studies of migration and diaspora, governance, social movements and transnationalism, comparative politics with a focus on refugee and migration policies in Europe, peacebuilding and conflict transformation, and regional policy analysis with a focus on Middle Eastern politics and the Kurdish-Turkish conflict.

It draws on an EU COST Action research network on Police Stops which engaged academics and practitioners from 29 countries to better understand the practice of police stops. The chapters are arranged by theme to focus on a core aspect of the governance of police stops. Each compares the distinct approaches evident across Europe, often employing case studies. The book adopts a critical approach, acknowledging governance as contested and involving diverse (state, non-state and supranational) actors. Transformations des rites funéraires, notamment sous l’effet de la déchristianisation de l’Occident, diffusion d’un pluralisme religieux, pratiques individuelles en sont les traits les plus marquants. Mais c’est davantage l’acte de mourir, voire la définition même de la mort, qui semblent aujourd’hui changer radicalement. Cette mutation, profonde, n’est pourtant pas un fait nouveau. Elle n’est que le prolongement d’une autre transformation, plus ancienne, qui a touché l’ensemble du monde occidental dès le XVIIIe siècle, où l’on a commencé à déplacer et éloigner les sépultures à la périphérie des villes. La « transition » – si ce n’est la rupture – qui s’est alors produite en seulement quelques générations est venue bouleverser un régime funéraire qui s’était imposé depuis la fin de l’Antiquité, articulant des espaces destinés aux morts aux lieux sacrés, et faisant cohabiter les vivants et les défunts. Cet ouvrage vient analyser la manière dont s’est mis en place cet effacement progressif à travers les siècles, en tentant de dresser une histoire longue des rapports entre les vivants et les morts.

Das Buch schließt diese Lücke, indem es kollektive Lebensläufe vor dem Hintergrund der Zeitgeschichte beschreibt. Charakteristisch für das Altern der zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts Geborenen ist, dass sie in ihrer Kindheit, in der Jugend und im mittleren Erwachsenenalter schwierige Lebensumstände – Krieg, Geldentwertung und politische Umbrüche – zu bewältigen hatten. Das Altern der Überlebenden fällt hingegen in eine anhaltende Friedenszeit zunehmenden Wohlstands. Dies unterscheidet sie von heutigen Generationen. Aus dem Zusammenspiel verschiedener Faktoren werden im Anschluss Determinanten des langen Lebens herausgearbeitet.

    Abstract: Barry Buzan proposes a new approach to making International Relations a truly global discipline that transcends both Eurocentrism and comparative civilisations. He narrates the story of humankind as a whole across three eras, using its material conditions and social structures to show how global society has evolved. Deploying the English School's idea of primary institutions and setting their story across three domains - interpolity, transnational and interhuman - this book conveys a living historical sense of the human story whilst avoiding the overabstraction of many social science grand theories. Buzan sharpens the familiar story of three main eras in human history with the novel idea that these eras are separated by turbulent periods of transition. This device enables a radical retelling of how modernity emerged from the late 18th century. He shows how the concept of 'global society' can build bridges connecting International Relations, Global Historical Sociology and Global/World History.

    Abstract: As we face new global challenges - from climate change to the international political order - the need to re-examine the historical roots of cosmopolitanism and liberal principles on a global scale has become increasingly central to the political conversation. Cosmopolitanism and the Enlightenment brings together leading scholars in cultural history, the history of ideas and global politics in order to reassess the complexity of cosmopolitanism during the Enlightenment and its various interpretations over time. Through a fresh and revisionist perspective, the volume explores issues of universalism and cultural diversity, the idea of civilization, race, gender, empire, colonialism, global inequality, national patriotism, international and civil conflict, and other forms of political discourse, challenging the simple negative stereotype that the Enlightenment was inevitably hierarchical and Eurocentric. Diego Palacios Cerezales is a Senior Researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain. Diego’s research focuses on the transnational history of petitioning from the Age of Revolution to the third wave of democratisation (1789–1989), as well as on the history of policing in Spain and Portugal. He has written and edited several books, and published sixteen journal articles. Oriol Luján holds a lectureship at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, in Spain. Prior to this, he held a postdoctoral position at the Complutense University of Madrid, as well as visiting positions at the European University Institute in Florence, and the Sorbonne in Paris. Oriol specialises in the cultural history of politics and parliamentary representation in nineteenth-century Spain. He has written several books, book chapters and journal articles. .

    Abstract: Mit der Geschichte des Rechts der Sharī῾a von Fikret Karčić liegt eine erste innerislamische Gesamtdarstellung der islamischen Rechtsgeschichte in deutscher Sprache vor. Nach einer methodologischen Einführung und einem Überblick über das Recht der vorislamischen Araber schließt sich eine Geschichte des Rechts der Sharī῾a an, die durch einen Abriss der islamischen Rechtsgeschichte auf dem Westbalkan ergänzt wird. In jedem Kapitel wird zunächst der geschichtliche und gesellschaftliche Rahmen umrissen, an dessen Darstellung sich Abschnitte zu den Rechtsquellen sowie zu Rechtswissenschaft und Rechtspraxis anschließen. Der Autor Prof. Dr. Fikret Karčić (1955-2022) lehrte Rechtsgeschichte an der Universität Sarajevo. Er war Mitglied des Präsidiums der islamischen Gemeinschaft von Bosnien und Herzegowina sowie von 2002 bis 2008 Präsident ihres Gerichtshofes. Darüber hinaus hatte er Gastprofessuren u. a. in lstanbul, Kuala Lumpur und Oslo inne. Der Herausgeber Dr. Jörg Imran Schröter leitete als Juniorprofessor 2015-2022 das Institut für Islamische Theologie/Religionspädagogik der Pädagogischen Hochschule Karlsruhe und ist im Schuldienst des Landes Baden-Württemberg tätig. Er forscht im Rahmen einer interreligiösen Friedensbildung u.a. zur Religiosität muslimischer Jugendlicher in der pluralen Gesellschaft. Der Übersetzer Andreas Maase ist Rechtsanwalt und Fachanwalt für Bau- und Architektenrecht in Ellwangen (Jagst). Er hat mehrere Schriften zur islamischen Rechtstheorie und Rechtsgeschichte aus dem Bosnischen ins Deutsche übersetzt.

    Abstract: This book adopts the rationalist research path to bring forward an innovative theory of foreign policy, and the central question is: How can we define the overall national interests of great powers appropriately and thus help states make consistent and rational grand strategies? The answer can't be found among existing Foreign Policy Analysis and other theoretical research. In this book, Positional Realism is proposed as a new theory to define the overall national interests from the power position and order position perspectives and specify the four kinds of positional interests of hegemonic states, contending states, potential contending states, and non-contending states. Different great powers have different positional power and order objectives. Based on these positional interests, Positional Realism brings different foreign policy hypotheses and suggestions. The book also examines the six great powers in the nineteenth century to verify these hypotheses and finds that Positional Realism can not only convincingly explain the success or failure of their acts, but also give useful and important directions for strategy making of great powers.

    Abstract: This book explores continuity and ruptures in the historical use of visual representations in science and related disciplines such as art history and anthropology. The book also considers more recent developments that attest to the unprecedented importance of scientific visualizations, such as video recordings, animations, simulations, graphs, and enhanced realities. The volume collects historical reflections concerned with the use of visual material, visualization, and vision in science from a historical perspective, ranging across multiple cultures from antiquity until present day. The focus is on visual representations such as drawings, prints, tables, mathematical symbols, photos, data visualizations, mapping processes, and (on a meta-level) visualizations of data extracted from historical sources to visually support the historical research itself. Continuity and ruptures between the past and present use of visual material are presented against the backdrop of the epistemic functions of visual material in science. The function of visual material is defined according to three major epistemic categories: exploration, transformation, and transmission of knowledge.

    Abstract: This open access handbook takes a comparative and global approach to analyse the practice of slavery throughout history. In order to understand slavery - why it developed, and how it functioned in various societies – is to understand an important and widespread practice in world civilisations. With research traditionally being dominated by the Atlantic world, this collection aims to illuminate slavery that existed in not only the Americas but also ancient, medieval, North and sub-Saharan African, Near Eastern, and Asian societies. Connecting civilisations through migration, warfare, trade routes and economic expansion, the practice of slavery integrated countries and regions through power-based relationships, whilst simultaneously dividing societies by class, race, ethnicity and cultural group.     Abstract: This book discusses the emerging threats to European stability in different borderland regions, from the Greater Middle East to the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans and the Black Sea. It highlights the specific geopolitical risks that could, left unchecked, have global repercussions. The book shows how recent events have exasperated underlying problems that have been slowly destabilizing each of these regions for years. It also looks at the geopolitical constraints and objectives of the countries within these regions to build a basis for understanding their current and future security challenges. While doing so, the book discusses the European borderlands in a non-traditional way, proposing a specific framework to study them, going beyond historical analysis and employing a heuristic process and in-depth socio-economic analysis to understand regional power relations and trends. It develops the key concepts of "core borderland" and "geopolitical node" to understand the future challenges that Europe in particular and Eurasia, in general, will face, discussing specific features shaping current affairs and identifying the main drivers - countries and specific regional elements - for the future stability of the borderlands. This book will appeal to students and scholars of international relations, as well as policy-makers, practitioners, and international organizations interested in a better understanding of current and future challenges at Europe's borderlands and the security risks the European continent faces.

    Abstract: Seit mehr als 100 Jahren begleiten Soziolog*innen gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen mit ihren Überlegungen, beobachten und beschreiben gesellschaftliche Spannungen entlang unterschiedlicher Bruchlinien und Konjunkturen. Dieser Band geht der Frage nach, wie sich die Soziologie in unterschiedlichen Phasen ihrer Fachgeschichte mit wirtschaftlichen, politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Spannungen, mit Macht- und Ungleichheitsstrukturen und mit daraus resultierenden Krisen auseinandergesetzt hat. Eng damit verbunden ist die Frage, wie gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen die Entwicklung der Soziologie beeinflusst haben, vielleicht sogar zu Motoren für das Fach geworden sind.     Abstract: In diesem Buch wird untersucht, wie die Europäische Union auf die Herausforderung der Vielfalt reagiert hat. Dabei wird die EU als ein komplexes Gemeinwesen betrachtet, das neue Wege gefunden hat, um der Vielfalt gerecht zu werden. Ein Großteil der Literatur über die EU versucht, sie als einen einzigartigen Fall von Zusammenarbeit zwischen Staaten zu identifizieren, der über die klassische internationale Zusammenarbeit hinausgeht. In diesem Band wird argumentiert, dass es für das Verständnis der Bemühungen der EU um den Umgang mit der Vielfalt unter ihren Mitgliedern und Bürgern effektiver ist, die EU als Staat zu betrachten. Die Autoren räumen zwar ein, dass der EU wichtige Aspekte der Staatlichkeit fehlen, zeigen aber, dass die Betrachtung der Bemühungen der EU um ein Gleichgewicht zwischen Vielfalt und Einheit durch die Brille der Staatspolitik ein fruchtbarer Weg ist, um die Union zu verstehen.     Abstract: This book investigates the phenomenon of overbalancing through an analysis of Japan’s foreign policy during the interbellum. In the mid-1930s, Japan withdrew from a naval arms control framework that had restrained military buildup on both sides of the Pacific Ocean since the early 1920s. By doing so, Japan not only triggered a naval arms race with the United States that exhausted its economy, it also destroyed the last institutionalized structure regulating the relationship between the two Pacific powers. Japan and the United States became caught in a spiral of tensions that culminated with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Puzzling is the fact that the international environment in the Asia-Pacific was relatively stable in the mid-1930s, while Washington was pursuing a policy of accommodation toward Tokyo. By rejecting arms control and engaging in unfettered naval expansion, Japan overbalanced against the United States and began its rush to the Pacific War. The book explains Japan’s overbalancing with a neoclassical realist model that combines the literatures on threat perception and civil-military relations. Amid the Manchurian crisis of 1931-1933, as the Japanese government collaborated with the military institution to address the situation in China, military influence on the formulation of foreign policy surged. The perceptual and policy biases of the military, which include the tendency to distrust other countries’ intentions, to adopt worst-case analyses of international dynamics and to strive to maximize military power, gradually penetrated the decision-making process. Dysfunctions in the preexisting structure of Japanese civil-military relations, engendered by an over-depoliticization of the military institution, allowed the navy to convince policymakers that the United States was inherently hostile to Japan, hence the necessity to prepare for war. The government was brainstormed, adopting the biased military perspective on international affairs. Japan overbalanced in a myopic but conscious way. Lionel P.     Abstract: This book analyses the historical sociology of state formation in the Horn of Africa. It examines the genesis, trajectories, processes, routes and consequences of the evolution of state formation. Three analytical and explanatory models explain the process of state formation in the HOA: proto-state, colonial and national liberation. The models, heuristically and innovatively, provide understanding, interpretation and analysis of state formation. While the proto-state model explicates an indigenous historical process of state formation, the colonial model refers to an externally designed and imposed process of state formation. The national liberation model concern state formation conducted under liberation movement and ideology. The distinct significance of these models is that collectively they generate sufficient analysis of state formation. They are also unique in that they have never been employed as aggregate analytical and explicative instruments to address the predicament of state formation in the Horn of Africa. Redie Bereketeab is Associate Professor of Sociology and Senior Researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute at Uppsala University, Sweden. His latest publications include: National Liberation Movements as Government in Africa (2019), and Alternatives to Neoliberal Peacebuilding and Statebuilding in Africa (2021). His research interest include political sociology, development sociology, African studies, conflict, peacebuilding, regional integration.

    Abstract: Why does an entire society believe that there are witches who must be burned? What roles did the emerging 'state', the professions of clerics and jurists, and the public involved play in each case? And how could this project be finished? From a sociological point of view, the findings of recent international research on witches provide a model of a more general, highly ambivalent, 'pastoral' attitude, according to which a shepherd has to care for the welfare of his flock as well as for its erring sheep. The first main part describes the clerical initial situation, which developed the 'Dominican' demonological model of witchcraft on the basis of the still dominant magico-religious mentality in the 15th century. A model, according to the second part of the book, which then in the course of the 16th century in Western Europe increasingly fell into the hands of the not so innocent jurists. From there it developed into a legal witch persecution that realized the early European witch model from the village witch to the mass persecutions to the late child witches. The third part describes how witch persecutions slowly became less important towards the end of the 17th century as a general witchcraft 'politics' game in the transition from a confessional state to a (court) 'civil service' state. The author Prof. Dr. Stephan Quensel is a lawyer and criminologist. Until his retirement in 2002, he was a professor in the Department of Resocialization and Rehabilitation in the Sociology program at the University of Bremen. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.
