    Abstract: This open access book studies how foreign models of economic development can be effectively learned by and applied to today’s latecomer countries. Policy capacity and societal learning are increasingly stressed as pre-conditions for successful catch-up. However, how such learning should be initiated by individual societies with different features needs to be explained. The book answers this pragmatic question from the perspective of Japan’s past experience and its extensive development cooperation in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Since the late nineteenth century, Japan has developed a unique philosophy and method for adopting advanced technologies and systems from the West; the same philosophy and method govern its current cooperation with the developing world. The key concepts are local learning and translative adaptation. Local learning says that development requires the learner to adopt a proactive mindset and the goal of graduating from receiving aid. Meanwhile, translative adaptation requires foreign models be modified to fit local realities given the different structures of the home and foreign society. The development process must be wholly owned by the domestic society in rejection of copy-and-paste acceptance. These ideas not only informed Japan but are key to successful development for all. The book also asks how this learning method should—or should not—be revised in the age of SDGs and digitalization. Following the overview section that lays out the general principles, the book offers many real cases from Japan and other countries. The concrete actions outlined in these cases, with close attention to individual growth “ingredients” as opposed to general theories, are crucial to successful policy making. The book contains materials that are highly useful for national leaders and practitioners within developing countries as well as students of development studies

    Abstract: This open access volume of LIDC contributions focuses on how competition and intellectual property laws incorporate sustainability objectives. Businesses are increasingly embracing sustainability objectives, driven by the international community. Although competition and intellectual property law are certainly not the only tools for addressing sustainability issues, they can play a role in moving toward a more sustainable society. Sustainability has gained prominence in competition law in all jurisdictions covered in this volume. The contributions focus on classic questions such as whether sustainability agreements restrict competition and, if so, to what extent businesses can be exempted on efficiency grounds. The papers also raise a number of questions, in particular concerning the treatment of non-market efficiencies. The soft law and case law produced by competition authorities are examined, and the leadership role of some competition authorities in the field – from advocacy to policy papers and sustainability guidelines – is highlighted. The authors call for more individual guidance to provide enhanced transparency and clarity to industry, advisors and society at large on sustainability issues, with guidelines or sustainability-related block exemptions providing even greater legal certainty. With regard to intellectual property, the contributions examine various important issues, such as the need for intellectual property rights to remain technology-neutral, ways to promote the use of sustainable technologies and incentives for licensing, and ways to promote the dissemination of sustainable technologies, including compulsory licensing, cross-licensing, open source or FRAND licensing, and replacing the destruction of counterfeit goods with recycling. The papers also discuss greenwashing and how it can be addressed through revisions to trademarks and related rights

The current pandemic has imposed several effects on work and spaces for work.     Abstract: Seit dem Mord an George Floyd durch den Polizeieingriff in den Vereinigten Staaten im Mai 2020 und der daraus erwachsenen (Social Media-)Bewegung #blacklivesmatter hat auch die Beschäftigung mit den verschiedenen Formen von Rassismus in Deutschland zugenommen. Konnte der Begriff vor wenigen Jahren in wissenschaftlichen wie öffentlichen Diskursen weitgehend nur schwierig oder selten genutzt werden, hat er sich inzwischen hierzulande auch als Gegenbegriff zur globalen Wirkmächtigkeit rechter Ideologien, die besonders Identitätskategorien zur Legitimation mörderischer Gewalt heranziehen, sowie im Kontext globaler Diversifizierungsmaßnahmen im Diskursmainstream durchgesetzt. Dieser Erfolg des Begriffs lässt auch die filmischen Produktionen zu Themen von Menschenfeindlichkeit, die auf Repräsentationskategorien basieren, in einem neuen Licht erscheinen. Filme zu Themen des Rassismus versuchen, Aufklärungsarbeit im Sinne anti-rassistischer Praxis zu leisten, während beispielsweise propagandistische Videos rechter und dschihadistischer Kreise zur (re-)produktiven Verhandlung von Rassismus beitragen. Andererseits lassen sich Filme, die scheinbar nichts mit Rassismus zu tun haben, bei einem genaueren analytischen Blick sehr wohl als Verstärkungs-, Reproduktions- oder Verschleierungsakteure von Rassismen verstehen. So sind Filme immer schon im Sinne von (Un-)Sichtbarkeitsmaschinen dazu geeignet, soziale Verhältnisse zu veräußerlichen und so ungedachte Zusammenhänge zu denken. In dieser argumentativen Bi-Perspektivität – Sichtbarwerden der Rassismusdiskurse und Filme als Sichtbarkeitsmedien sozialer Verhältnisse – geht der vorliegende Sammelband Diskursformen des Rassismus, seiner Filmkulturen und Möglichkeiten des (anti-rassistischen) Widerstands besonders/aber nicht nur im deutschsprachigen Kontext nach. Daran schließen sich folgende Fragen an: Wie sieht der Zusammenhang von (fiktionalen) Filmen und Formen des Rassismus in Film-kulturen aus? Wie gehen fiktionale Formate mit Antisemitismus, Rechtsradikalismus, antimuslimischem Rassismus, Antiziganismus und whiteness um? Und wie versuchen aktuelle (auch experimentelle) filmische Formate, Rassismus entgegenzutreten? Im Zentrum des Sammelbandes stehen die Filme und ihre Geschichten selbst. Ziel ist es, das Erkenntnispotential von Filmen in der Auseinandersetzung mit Rassismus zu befragen: Was genau am Rassismus machen die Filme sichtbar? Wie lassen sich mögliche historische Entwicklungen narrativer audiovisueller Diskursformen (für den deutschsprachigen Kontext) darstellen? Wie verändern sich in diesen Entwicklungen die Auseinandersetzungen mit jenen rassistischen Formen? Und grundsätzlich: Wie stehen Film und Rassismus zueinander?     Abstract: This open access book presents the exciting research results of the BMBF funded project iCity carried out at University of Applied Science Stuttgart to help cities to become more liveable, intelligent and sustainable, to become a LIScity. The research has been pursued with industry partners and NGOs from 2017 to 2020. A LIScity is increasingly digitally networked, uses resources efficiently, and implements intelligent mobility concepts. It guarantees the supply of its grid-bound infrastructure with a high proportion of renewable energy. Intelligent cities are increasingly human-centered, integrative, and flexible, thus placing the well-being of the citizens at the center of developments to increase the quality of life. The articles in this book cover research aimed to meet these criteria.     Abstract: El libro presenta once trabajos sobre un debate historiográfico, el estudio de cómo se construyeron y asimilaron las diferencias humanas y culturales. Aunque concede una atención especial a América hasta el siglo XIX, integra otros espacios relacionados con la España colonial como Filipinas o Marruecos. La percepción del otro, comenzando por quién designa y es designado como otro, no es un tema nuevo en la historiografía, pero sigue vigente por su capacidad de integrar las visiones de dominadores y dominados, por su metodología interdisciplinar (representada en el libro por la colaboración de historiadores, historiadores del arte o antropólogos) y por la naturaleza universal de algunas de sus conclusiones, las cuales permiten relacionarlo con el presente. En resumen, una propuesta amplia e integradora que interroga al pasado sobre un tema definitorio del ser humano y que, por eso, nunca deja de ser actual. Quizás, si comprendemos los fenómenos de identidad y alteridad como construcciones culturales, podamos favorecer la formación de sociedades más respetuosas y pacíficas

    Abstract: Katarina Šrimpf Vendramin v monografiji Zgodbe in prostor raziskuje in predstavlja ustno izročilo zgornjega Obsotelja, ki leži ob slovensko-hrvaški meji. V prvem delu prikaže historiat zbiranja in objavljanja pripovednega izročila, v drugem pa predstavi sodobno terensko gradivo in analizo besedil, teksture in konteksta. Raziskava izpostavlja vlogo in pomen slovstvene folklore v družbenem in kulturnem življenju obravnavanega območja. Skozi etiološke povedke, zgodovinske zgodbe ter povedke o bajnih bitjih sta predstavljena koncepta liminalnega prostora-časa (kronotopa) in povezava ustnega izročila z ustvarjanjem kolektivnih identitet in kolektivnega spomina. Na obmejnem območju je pripovedno izročilo še posebej pomembno pri vzpostavljanju identitet, na eni strani s pripovedjo o »drugem«, tj. različnem, na drugi pa z zgodbami, ki pripovedovalcu in publiki vzbujajo občutek lokalne pripadnosti in vzpostavljanja lokalne identitete

Through in-depth ethnographic research into the Turkish fashion market and the work of a category of new comers, namely headscarf-wearing fashion professionals, Islam, Faith, and Fashion examines entrepreneurship in this market and the aesthetic desirability, religious suitability, and ethical credibility of fashionable Islamic dress. What makes a fashionable outfit Islamically appropriate? What makes an Islamically appropriate outfit fashionable? What are the conditions, challenges and constraints an entrepreneur faces in this market, and how do they market their products? Is the presumed oxymoronic nature of Islamic fashion a challenge or a burden?     Abstract: Thirty years after the collapse of Communism, and at a time of increasing anti-migrant and anti-Roma sentiment, this book analyses how Roma identity is expressed in contemporary Europe.     Abstract: Trans-afrohispanismos: puentes culturales críticos entre África, Latinoamérica y España is an innovative approach to Afro-Hispanic Studies. It focuses on the connections between peoples, territories, and media of expression at the confluence of Africa and the Hispanic world. The volume’s contributors apply perspectives from their respective areas of specialization to their examination of transcultural interactions in a diverse range of contexts. These include Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara, Spain, Morocco, Afro-descendant communities in Latin America and transnational spaces generated by digital technologies and contemporary migration. The volume offers an expanded understanding of Afro-Hispanic Studies and serves as a model of inquiry in a field whose hallmark is the mobility of people and knowledge. Trans-afrohispanismos: puentes culturales críticos entre África, Latinoamérica y España es una aproximación innovadora a los Estudios Afrohispánicos. Destaca las conexiones entre gentes, territorios y medios de expresión en la confluencia de África y el mundo hispánico. Estos incluyen Guinea Ecuatorial, el Sáhara Occidental, España, Marruecos, comunidades de afrodescendientes en América Latina y los espacios transnacionales originados por las tecnologías digitales y la migración. Este libro ofrece una visión más amplia de los Estudios Afrohispánicos. Adicionalmente, sirve de modelo de investigación en un campo cuya seña de identidad es la movilidad de gentes y conocimientos.     Abstract: El libro recupera un gran desconocido de la España contemporánea: el exilio republicano en Argelia. Para dar a conocer la odisea de estos 15.000 exiliados, este estudio propone un viaje a través de las escrituras del yo de los que la vivieron en primera persona. En este recorrido, que abarca desde 1939, con el análisis de los diarios redactados en los campos de concentración en los que se vieron internados, hasta 2016, haciendo lo propio con las memorias de los –entonces– niños del exilio, se examinan las articulaciones identitarias de los autores en su llamamiento a que (les) recordemos (y) que “escriben, luego son”

    Abstract: "El intelectual y la cultura de masas, by Javier García Liendo, studies the responses of Ángel Rama (Uruguay) and Jose María Arguedas (Peru) to the effects of mass culture on Andean indigenous cultures and Latin American print culture during the second half of the twentieth century. It explores the part that Rama and Arguedas played in the conceptualization and promotion of new cultural spaces made possible by commodification and industrialization, as capitalism transformed the imaginaries and materialities that had shaped their cultural projects for Andean and Latin American cultures. Through a material analysis of print culture objects, in particular those resulting from Rama's editorial ventures--such as pocket paperbacks and a popular encyclopedia--this work examines the transformations occurring at the time in Latin America at the level of production and circulation of culture, and thus sheds light on the emergence of new networks of communication between intellectuals and national and regional publics. Similarly, it explores the role of emergent communication technologies (sound recording and radio) in the reshaping of rural indigenous cultures into a mass-oriented popular culture in Peru. In this context, Arguedas's work with folklore and his later involvement in the Andean popular music scene in Lima are studied as responses to a violent process of commercialization of traditional Andean musical culture, a result of mass migration from rural areas to cities and urbanization"--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: If piety, faith, and conviction constitute one side of the religious coin, then imperfection, uncertainty, and ambivalence constitute the other. Yet, scholars tend to separate these two domains and place experiences of inadequacy in everyday religious life – such as a wavering commitment, religious negligence or weakness in faith – outside the domain of religion ‘proper.’ Straying from the Straight Path breaks with this tendency by examining how self-perceived failure is, in many cases, part and parcel of religious practice and experience.     Abstract: One of the most salient issues in Caribbean studies is the region's linguistic and cultural fragmentation as a result of European colonization. More than five centuries later, the islands and American countries whose shores touch the Caribbean Sea still echo such maladies. The title of this book is a call towards unity, a unity that, in the words of Barbadian poet, historian and critic Kamau Brathwaite, "is submarine." In the past, nations' borders were established based on the distance a cannon ball was able to cover when fired from land out to sea. It is time to go beyond the cannon ball distances out into uncharted territories, beyond the canon, and, thus, beyond the cannon's range. This book features a selection of essays presented at the fifth annual Caribbean Without Borders conference at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. It critically delves into the fields of linguistics, history, literature, philosophy, politics, feminism, cultural studies, music, film, and art, among many others, as a means to re-visit, re-view, re-envision, re-read, re-interpret, and thus re-create a Caribbean aesthetics that looks to submarine unity, a unity that defies spatial, temporal, and social borders.
