    Abstract: "When used in India, the term Kala Pani refers to the cellular jail in Port Blair where the British colonizers sent a select category of freedom fighters. In the diaspora it refers to the transoceanic migration of indentured labour from India to plantation colonies across the globe from the mid-19th century onwards. This volume discusses the legacies of indenture in the Caribbean, Reunion, Mauritius, and Fiji, and how they still imbue our present. More importantly, it draws attention to India and raises new questions: doesn't one need, at some stage, to wonder why this forgotten chapter of Indian history needs to be retrieved? How is it that this history is better known outside India than in India itself? What are the advantages of shining a torch onto a history that was made invisible? Why have the tribulations of the old diaspora been swept under the carpet at a time when the successes of the new diaspora have been foregrounded? What do we stand to gain from resurrecting these histories in the early 21st century and from shifting our perspectives? A key volume on Indian diaspora, modern history, indentured labour, and the legacy of indentureship, this volume examines these questions largely through the frame of important works of literature and cinema, folk songs and oral tales, making it an artistic enquiry of the past and of the present. Despite a plethora of provisions for affirmative action in the Indian Constitution, Dalits are largely excluded from the mainstream. The book traces the multifarious changes that befell them during the colonial period and their development thereafter under the leadership of Babasaheb Ambedkar. It looks at hitherto unexplored aspects of the degeneration of the Dalit movement during the post-Ambedkar period, as well as most contemporary issues around it such as the rise of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Dalit capitalism, NGOization of the Dalit discourse, and the various implicit or explicit emancipation schemas thrown up by them. The work also discusses ideology, strategy and tactics of the Dalit movement; touches upon one of the most contentious issues of increasing divergence between the Dalit and Marxist movements; and delineates the role of the state, both colonial and post-colonial, in shaping Dalit politics in particular ways. This new edition includes a new chapter explicating the rise of hindutva to assume complete control of the state and the dynamics it unleashed around Dalits. It traces its genesis to the construction of the post-colonial state which inter alia consecrated castes and avoided to adopt secularism.     Abstract: "Festivals have always been part of city life, but their relationship with their host cities has continually changed. With the rise of industrialization, they were largely considered peripheral to the course of urban affairs. Now they have become central to new ways of thinking about the challenges of economic and social change, as well as repositioning cities within competitive global networks. In this timely and thought-provoking book, John and Margaret Gold provide a reflective and evidence-based historical survey of the processes and actors involved, charting the ways that regular festivals have now become embedded in urban life and city planning. Beginning with David Garrick's rain-drenched Shakespearean Jubilee and ending with Sydney's flamboyant Mardi Gras celebrations, it encompasses the emergence and consolidation of city festivals.     Abstract: Spätestens in den 1980er-Jahren führte die Globalisierung der Märkte zu ökonomischen Interdependenzen und einer verstärkt transnationalen Ausrichtung der Handelspolitik weltweit. Seither befinden sich Nationalstaaten im Spannungsfeld zwischen der Integration in eine globalisierte Welt und dem Erhalt einer nationalen Kultur sowie kulturellen Identität. Welchen Einfluss hat ein stark marktorientierter globaler Austausch an Produkten, Menschen und Gütern auf die nationale Kulturpolitik und kulturelle Produktion eines Landes? Es geht hier um die Transformation der australischen Kulturlandschaft der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte von 1994 bis heute. Bei der 1994 entwickelten nationalen kulturpolitischen Strategie "Creative Nation" stand das Ziel der Schaffung einer nationalen Kultur im Vordergrund. Diesem lag die Auffassung zugrunde, Kultur schaffe Wohlstand und solle die nationale Wirtschaftsleistung steigern und schützen. Somit kann die Kulturpolitik Australiens nur im Kontext der Wirtschafts- und Entwicklungspolitik verstanden werden. Anhand von Fallbeispielen in ausgewählten Bereichen wird besonders im vergangenen Jahrzehnt eine verstärkte Kommerzialisierung des Kultursektors festgestellt.     Abstract: In her pioneering book The Global City, Saskia Sassen argued that certain cities in the post-industrial world have become central nodes in the new service economy, strategic sites for the acceleration of capital and information flows as well as spaces of increasing socio-economic polarization. One effect has been that such cities have gained in importance and power relative to nation-states. In this new collection of essays, Sassen and a distinguished group of contributors expand on the author's earlier work in a number of important ways, focusing on two key issues. First, they look at how information flows have bound global cities together in networks, creating a global city web whose constituent cities become "global" through the networks they participate in. Second, they investigate emerging global cities in the developing world - Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Beirut, the Dubai - Iran corridor, and Buenos Aires. They show how these globalizing zones are not only replicating many features of the top tier of global cities, but are also generating new socio-economic patterns as well

    Abstract: "India's partition in 1947 and the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 saw the displacement and resettling of millions of Muslims and Hindus, resulting in profound transformations across the region. A third of the region's population sought shelter across new borders, almost all of them resettling in the Bengal delta itself. A similar number were internally displaced, while others moved to the Middle East, North America and Europe. Using a creative interdisciplinary approach combining historical, sociological and anthropological approaches to migration and diaspora this book explores the experiences of Bengali Muslim migrants through this period of upheaval and transformation. It draws on over 200 interviews conducted in Britain, India, and Bangladesh, tracing migration and settlement within, and from, the Bengal delta region in the period after 1947. Focussing on migration and diaspora 'from below', it teases out fascinating 'hidden' migrant stories, including those of women, refugees, and displaced people. It reveals surprising similarities, and important differences, in the experience of Muslim migrants in widely different contexts and places, whether in the towns and hamlets of Bengal delta, or in the cities of Britain. Counter-posing accounts of the structures that frame migration with the textures of how migrants shape their own movement, it examines what it means to make new homes in a context of diaspora. The book is also unique in its focus on the experiences of those who stayed behind, and in its analysis of ruptures in the migration process. Importantly, the book seeks to challenge crude attitudes to 'Muslim' migrants, which assume their cultural and religious homogeneity, and to humanize contemporary discourses around global migration"--Provided by publisher

The authors critically examine a range of 'border domains' including law, citizenship, governance, morality, security, economy, culture and civil society, which provide the means and justification for contemporary border controls, and identify early signs that the dynamics of sovereignty and borders are being fundamentally transformed under conditions of neo-liberal globalization. The goal is to locate potential pathways towards the preferred future of relaxed border controls, and provide a foundation for a progressive politics dedicated to moving beyond mere critique of the harm and inequity of border controls and capable of envisaging a differently bordered world. This book will be of considerable interest to students of border studies, migration, criminology, peacemaking, critical security studies and IR in general"--
